Battery life conservation practice

Q: Battery life conservation practice

Just bought a 920 yoga and have a more general question on battery conservation practice:Do I "bypass" my battery when it is 100% charged and keep my PC pluged ? Is this practice of keeping the device pluged while the battery is fully charged "bad", "good" or "neutral" for battery life? Thank you.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Greetings, I have my Thinkpad P50 for a couple of months now. Earlier, I used to go to Lenovo battery settings and notice the conservation mode which charges the battery to a certain capicity in order to conserve it. Now I can not see that option anymore, I don't know what happened but it is not there anymore. I access the settings from the start menu or the battery strip in the taskbar. Any help is appreciated.

Hi Lenovo Family,I am Emre from Turkey. I have a question. I just bougth a V33015IKB and installed necessary softwares like Vantage and finished all the updates. But I realized that there is no Battery Conservation option in Vantage which is present in my another Lenovo Notebook V310. I made some research but couldn't be sure if it is not an option for V330 or it is just kind of a bug. So is there a way to limit max charge level of my V330 and save its battery or do I have to charge it %100 everytime and kill it quickly?Thank you,Emre

So I got my T460s a week ago. It was preloaded with Windows 7, where one could set the battery into conservation mode. This left the battery at a 50-60% charge when the computer is plugged in for long periods of time.In Windows 10 I can't find this option. I do have Lenovo Settings installed, but under battery there is no option to enable conservation mode. So how can I enable battery conservation mode?

I recently purchased a ideapad 700 for home use. However, when the conservation mode is turned on, i noticed the notebook sometimes charged to 100% by itself without consent. Then I would have to disable the conservation mode, and then re-enable again the function so the battery would deplete its battery to 60%. This is not often happening everyday, but it did happened some often and it is annoying since it is wasting the charge cycle of the battery. Any help?

Not sure if this is really a debatable topic or not, but from what I have been seeing everywhere, there isn't a consensus, so I figured it would be a debate.

Basically for like laptop batteries, what is the best practice to maximize the life of it? From what I can see, it is best to charge the battery to 100%. Once the battery is full charged, remove the AC adapter and run on battery power until about 10%-20%. Then, plug in the ac adapter back in to charge the battery. I'm not sure if a complete discharge of the battery (to 0%) is recommended about once a month. I have seen some people say never run the battery to 0%, but then others say to do this once a month.

I also feel that it is fine to remove the battery and just have the laptop plugged in through the ac adapter if keeping the laptop plugged in for long periods of time. I'm guessing this is not recommended for areas where there is unreliable power, such as spikes, brownouts, and blackouts. I think it would be best to have the ac adapter always plugged into a surge protector to protect the laptop components when running without a battery in. I'm pretty sure a surge protector only protects against spikes, though, so then a UPS would be a better solution to protect against all of them (spikes, brownouts, and blackouts).

If the battery is out of the laptop for long periods of time, though, it is recommended to keep it in a cool area. I have seen some people say to wrap it tightly in like a bag and... Read more

To all owners of X1 Carbon 2017 (5th gen).I read all of those reviews where people are impressed by 10+ hours of battery life (15,5h advertised), but I can't really figure out how....!? First time I tested was a normal working day - Firefox (a lot of Flash it must be said), Outlook, Word, Excel, Adobe Acrobat. Nothing really heavy, no peripherals except Bluetooth mouse. Brightness dimmed 1 level below the ideal. It lasted for about 4 hours! I windows's list of apps affecting battery life, Firefox was on 1st place with 32-35% Second attempt - same set of tasks, however less Firefox (no flash) - 7 hours. Now in the middle of a 3rd attempt (using Opera this time) - battery time remaining indication goes over 10h only when I completely stop using the laptop Not many apps running in the background either (Dropbox, Skype...) So my question - do you guys get more than 10h of battery life and HOW? Do you enable "Battery Stretch"? How actively do you use it and for what?

Hello, I'm having an issue that's been bothering me since a couple of days ago. During the first month, my 1.5 month old YOGA 520 14IKB battery icon displayed 8-9 hours when fully charged. However, I had to work with the laptop plugged in for a while, so I activated the conservation mode. It charged the battery up to 60% and then stopped it. I use that configuration for about 2 weeks and then some days ago I disabled the conservation mode in order to have more juice while unplugged. However, now the estimate time for the battery to run out reduced drastically to about... 3hours!!! I tried to discharge it until 5% and the charge to 100% but that didn't fix it... I also read that could be a problem of outdated drivers but all my drivers are up to date (according to the Lenovo site). There are, however, updates for the graphics cards on Intel and NVIDIA sites, but the Intel tool says that Lenovo has a custom driver for the UHD 620 and probably that is also the case with NVIDIA. Could anyone, by chance, give me any tip on how I can restore my battery time? Thank you.

Hey, I really need help. I'm having problems with my laptop. It's a dell inspiron 7559 and was bought around January. Recently I have seen that the battery has no longer been as hot as it used to be when I first started using it. Along with the sleeve on the tip of the screen power adapter (below the part where the adapter lights up) has started to come off, exposing the wires. The battery has continually dropped down its percentage rate ever since I bought it, and it won't go back up. It is currently at 0% battery life and it says when you highlight over the battery icon ( plugged in, not charging). It also happens to show the BIO setup when I start the computer and shows that the batteries wattage and type cannot be determined. In the BIOS setup, the ac adapter type is unknown. The battery has not been through any harsh conditions along with the laptop. I have tried removing the battery, starting up the computer with the ac adapter (which is 130 watts), then adding the battery back, and ac adapter, then turning it on, but it had no effects. If I remove my ac adapter while my computer is on ,it instantly turns off. If someone can support me with this issue, it would be gladly appreciated. Thanks.

Hi there!  Since the battery life of 320S is less than stellar, I tried to find ways of enhancing it beyond the beaten paths. When examining which batteries are compatible to mine, I noticed that besides three two-cell types (7.2V),- 5B10M49825- 5B10M49823- 5B10M49822 (this is the one the laptop came with)three three-cell units (11.4V ) were offered as possible replacements. These are:- 5B10M49826- 5B10M49824- 5B10M49821 My question is:What effect does the change of the battery voltage has on the battery life? Has anybody tried this change and what were the results?I think this strongly depends on how the onboard voltage is generated: A very primitive voltage regulator would simply turn the excess voltage into heat and would have no effect on the battery life.A more sophisticated regulator would detect the incoming voltage and could (the conservation of power applies) turn additional voltage (e.g. 11.4V) into additional current at a lower voltage (e.g. 7.4V), yielding a longer battery life. Can Lenovo say how the onboard voltage regulators will react to an aleviated input voltage ? can the battery life be extended this way?Has anybody already tried this conversion and if so, what was the result? Best regards and thanks in advance,Matthias

Despite the manufacturer's claim of 7 hours battery life on my Lenovo Ideapad 320S-14IKB - 81BN (S/N: MP1CHQTJ), I only get around 3-4 hours. This is with light usage, Reddit, a little bit of youtube etc. CPU usage was mostly around 0-5% the entire time. This was with the max CPU state in power settings reduced from 100% to 85%. However, I do have the screen at 100% brightness. As a different test, I tried doing (almost) nothing (apart from keeping the screen bright), and got 6 hours out of the battery. Is there a simple solution to increase this? It's only a 30 Wh battery (2 cell). Maybe in the future, a 60 Wh (4 cell?) one will come out for this model?

Hey there,
Yes you read it correctly: I have just received mine, which I purchased because of battery life and overheating and fan noise issues on the Dell XPS 13 i7 7th gen. The 8th gen was supposed to have solved all the issues the previous version was plagued with...
Well... I unboxed it, loaded all of my softwares, installed all the WIndows updates, Dell drivers, you name it. Charged it and started using it. When I unplugged the power cord, first estimate was 4hrs on the Windows battery indicator. Then I installed BatteryBar to have a more reliable estimator. Same.
Later on, I discovered a very strong and very loud fan. Unsurprisingly, the underneath was burning hot.
Got the support team on the phone, whilst I was talking with them, the fan kicked in and I even could give them a glimpse of how loud that was over the phone.
Has any of the lucky owners of the XPS 13 i7 8th gen come across similar issues?
Sometimes, I am just baffled by the world there is between the promise and the reality....

A:XPS 13 8th gen i7 16GB RAM QHD+ Battery Issues 4hrs battery life tops

A brand new system may have an unusually high level of background tasks running simultaneously, such as Windows and other applications checking for and downloading updates, Windows monitoring your usage to optimize technologies such as PreFetch for your usage patterns, etc.  You might want to conduct a battery test after things have settled in a bit more.  The QHD+ display takes 2-3 hours off of the expected battery life, but you should still get 7-8 hours under normal use.  Then again, if you're heavy on WiFi and max out display brightness, you'll get less than that.  The fact that the fans are kicking on also suggests there's an unusually high level of background activity running, so check Task Manager to see if you can find out what's responsible for that.

Assuming that they are all designed to fit your laptop, you need to look at the ratings. Basically, you want the one with the greatest Ah (amp?re-hour) as that should last longest. Although this usually means the battery with the most cells, it doesn't always follow. Check their specifications.

My family, myself are long time Lenovo Thinkpad T users.  I currently have a T 520.  It's fine as it always has been and quite pleased,  but I would now like something much lighter and it has developed a little glitch that doesn't seem reparable.  I will still keep it as a second, back-up laptop.  I just ordered the T460s that is to my liking and right in my price range (got the basic one new from Lenovo for under $800).   But to my dismay and amazement, I keep reading and hearing about lousy battery charge times ranging from 4 to 7 hrs when it is suppose to be at least 10 hrs.  And about all kinds of efforts and ways to increase it with apparently little success.   I have searched several times in this Thinkpad T forum (and elsewhere) on the latest, up to date info and experience regarding the battery and maximizing, extending battery life for the T460s.  I have not found anything beyond around 10/16/16.    As of 2/12/17, I am wondering what battery is now going into T460s, like the one being built for me.   Is it the same as always or something diferent, new, improved? Are T460s users still having the same problems and issues with the length of the battery charge? Has anyone found something, anything that really does maximize, improve or extend T460s battery life? Thanks, Randy

Hello,
A week or two ago, I started seeing a pop-up appear on my Inspiron screen (I run Windows 8). The pop-up said that the AC adapter was not recognized, and therefore, the battery would not charge. It was the same 65W adapter that came with the laptop. I hit F2 at startup to check the BIOS, and it said the adapter wasn't recognized. I decided to order a new adapter. While I waited for it to arrive, the battery gradually drained down, but the laptop continued to work while plugged in.
The new adapter came today, an official Dell adapter. I plugged it in... Same error message. Adapter not recognized.
I ran a check on the battery; the system says the battery is fine. I pulled the battery, and the laptop still worked via the adapter. I jiggled and checked all the connections. Couldn't find an issue and couldn't make it work.
I checked the BIOS version and date, and it's from 2013. Time for an update! I downloaded the latest version, but here's the problem: It won't install without the battery sitting at at least a 10% charge. The battery, of course, won't charge with either adapter (it's reading at 1% now). So I can't update the BIOS without some battery life, but I can't make it recognize the adapter and charge the battery without the updated BIOS (assuming that's even the problem, but I'm hopeful that's all it is).
If anyone has any suggestions for how I might make this work, I would very much appreciate it! Thank you!!!

A:Catch-22: No BIOS updated without battery, no battery life without BIOS update...

Please list Dell model number and version of windows. Ex: Dell Inspiron 3543, windows 10
If you don't know, type msinfo32 onto the search box, and then look for System model.....
In the meantime, please check the USB port, where the AC adapter is plugged into system, is loose. You could also wiggle the Adapter's end while checking it in the BIOS to see if the Adapter's type appears.

A:Y40 - Battery life only last 30 min

In response to customer reports of unexpected battery gauge behavior on Y40-70 and Y40-80 laptops, Lenovo determined the battery gauge software is performing as expected. The unusual gauge results being reported are a reflection of the battery reaching end of life.

Lenovo has released a Service TIP to assist customers with obtaining battery replacements under warranty, or if out of warranty, to find a replacement battery from Lenovo-approved vendors. The Service TIP can be found here: https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/sf16-I0023

The part numbers for Y40-70/80 batteries are:
Y40 SP/A L13M4P01 7.4V48Wh 4cell bty (Y40-70/Y40-80) 121500248
Y40 LG L13L4P01 7.4V48Wh 4cell bty (Y40-70/Y40-80) 121500249 substitute part 121500251
Y40 CP/C L13C4P01 7.4V48Wh 4cell bty (Y40-70/Y40-80) 121500259 substitute part 121500251

To determine which battery came with your Y40 notebook, instructions for removing the bottom cover can be found in the Hardware Maintenance Manual pdf here. An alternative to opening your system (which does not void warranty) is to search for batteries using the model/product number located on the bottom cover.

Hi everyone!

I couldn't find a discussion on battery life in Windows 7, so I decided to create a thread.

I recently installed Windows 7 Build 6956 on my laptop to try it for some time. I'm liking it so far. Using the Balanced power option in 7 I'm getting maybe 20 minutes longer battery life compared to using the Power Saver option in Vista. I'm guessing this is a good improvement since Balanced still allows full performance when needed and Vista cuts performance. I haven't tried Power Saver in 7 yet, but I guess it might give me a little extra time.

Has anyone else timed their battery life?

PS: I also noticed a difference in wake up time from sleep when I open the laptop lid. Windows 7 takes just a second to wake up and Vista takes about 4-5 seconds. Has anyone else noticed this difference?

Hey hethoofd,

I havent got around to running 7 on battery yet, but yes I am suitably impressed by Startup, wakeup, from both sleep and hibernate and reboot times.

The power saving that I have seen so far seems also pretty impressive. I am mainly surfing the forums not the best of tests but it does allow me to see how 7 switches down during periods of inactivity.

That's pretty much what you get here..."anyone". That's me. We don't work for HP for the most part we are just fellow end users who can give advice but have no power to make any kind of financial adjustment or ship any replacement parts to you. But the advice I can give you starts with testing the battery. There is a battery health diagnostic both in the UEFI diagnostic (tap F2 as you power up) and the HP Support Assistant from within running Windows. Try those and report back what it says as far as how the cells of the battery are working. Either the battery itself is defective or you are not really shutting off the laptop and some program or process is continuing to leach power when you think it is off.

I purchased a HP Envy 15 x360 TouchSmart Laptop and the battery life is horrible.  Another way for HP to make money. I do not recommend this product and want to make sure everyone is aware of the additional cost involved with it's purchase.  I have only had this laptop since 2/13/15 and already the battery will not charge.  You either have the option of buying an extended warranty at the time of purchase (as I recently learned) to cover only the first battery replacement or if you choose not to do that then you must pay to have the battery replaced.  It has to be sent in for this to be done or you have to be a computer tech yourself in order to change out the battery as there is not access to the battery from the back of the laptop.  The entire back has to be taken off to get to it. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS LAPTOP FOR THIS REASON.  I love the touch screen and the overall function but the battery issue is not optimal.  I can't believe that for the price I paid I now am forced to spend addtional money in the amount of hundreds of dollars to have it working properly.
