I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have the same problem with my mp3 player, I plug it in to add/delete music but it the computer will not reognize that I've plugged anything in. I have tried many usb cords.

Any ideas?

After removing a Pictures Library location, and subsequently adding it back right away, I cannot arrange by anything other than folder view.

The pictures can be sorted within this arrange-by view via a right-click, but no other arrange by options work.

Hi,

About a year or 2 back, I wanted to change the preview picture for one of my albums in my music folder. By default both Bliss and Eso albums were showing Flying Colours, when one was supposed to be showing Flying Colours and the other showing Running on Air. I decided to fix this by customising the preview picture in the folder's properties. It worked, but unfortunately now some of the folders, (I think the ones that have to have a default image or don't have any content to show, because inside them is just more folders - although possibly not all to that criteria, it's a bit random) in their preview image have the Running on Air album cover on them. Today, I tried to reverse the problem by setting the Running on Air album to default, but that didn't work. There's still a bunch of random folders on my computer with that image. I also tried changing some folders to a blank image (still annoying, but preferable to an album cover) in the hopes that the same thing would happen again and the blank image would replace all the album cover images. But that didn't work either. With that situation, it would seem that I would have to go all over my computer finding album cover folder previews and changing them manually. But I'm not going to do that.

I have to say, that this has annoyed me so much. I don't know why it happened. I just blame it on Vista like everybody else does.

Hello everyone. I'm new to this forum and I registered really quickly without really reading too much about it...it looked helpful towards my problem, and I really need whatever advice you can give me about my elderly Windows XP computer. I'm sorry if this problem or something similar has been solved here before, or if I'm doing something wrong here, but I've done so much research on this and found nothing too helpful so I'd appreciate any help! Sorry in advance for the novel I'm about to write

I'd consider myself pretty computer literate, I can fix your average problems and nowadays I know my stuff about anti-virus software, Windows, etc. A few years ago I became very interested in computers and decided to really teach myself all about them. My current laptop that I am using now is top-notch in security software, and I know how to take care of it now, but this wasn't the case back before I knew anything about computers, "firewalls", or "computer viruses". My HP computer crashed for the first time about 2 years ago, resulting in the following major problems immediately and since then I've let it sit idle and unplugged. Now I know everything I COULD have done to prevent the problem, but back then I just didn't know. I have an ancient HP computer, about 8 years old, running Windows XP. I don't believe I had a Firewall or decent anti-virus software or anything like that at the time. I could be wrong, bu... Read more

So, my HP dv1000 laptop screen works intermittently right now. I pulled it apart because I thought it was going to be the data cable, but I found out it was the piece in the picture with the arrow. If i push it in I can recreate the problem (which is seen in the other picture). The inverter and data cable are both fine.

I can move my screen back and forth fine when the back cover is off the lcd, but once I put the cover on it causes the screen to go white.

So, how do I fix the piece that the arrow points at? I don't want to break it.

A:HP Laptop LCD Problem w/ Pictures

It may be time for a new screen. It looks like a row driver IC inside the LCD module has some type of intermittent connection that comes and goes when pressure is applied near it. It could be due to a bad bonding joint or a microscopic break in a microscopically thin conductor on a flex circuit inside the LCD screen.

I was transfering some pictures from my camera and then I started organizing them in folders. As I was dragging some pictures to a folder which contained more photos, suddely all my folders disappeared ( I had 5-6 folders with pictures). Now they're all gone and I can't find them anywhere. There are only two folders left in Pictures and they're both empty. I tried everything, from system restore to recovery program...and nothing! I have a Toshiba laptop with Windows Vista.
I am desperate and frustrated and I need all the help I could get! I should mention that this is not the first time this is happening with Windows Vista as I had the same problem with some videos, they disappeared while I was trying to transfer them on my external memory and I was not able to find them anymore.

Maybe someone using a Laptop could have a look for me. I`m using Windows XP Home edition(desktop) and in my attachment shows the "folders files and tasks" list. Of course when i click on a picture/s the list expands and shows in particular "email this file". On a Dell laptop is the wording of the task the same in the "folders files and tasks"?

Yes the wording here is determined on the operating system installed and not whether it is a lap or desktop.

All of the pictures on my digital camera got deleted. I have attached the SD card to a memory card reader and plugged into the USB port, because I hope to recover my pictures via a photo recovery software. However, my laptop is not detecting the memory card reader, although the blue light is on. When I click devices and printers, it shows up as a removable disk (drive E). Further, none of the recovery programs have detected my photos from the memory card reader. They either show drive E as having nothing on it, or don't even give drive E as a recoverable option.

How can i fix this these problems?

Hello
My laptop is Dell Inspiron 14 N4050.
The problem is why it stucks in BIOS and cannot go to windows after I tried installing Windows 10 last time. That time the screen showed "there is not complete drivers inside". After that when I shut down forcefully and turn it on back the screen appeared in blue color and saying please call technician.

These happened after I send my laptop to a Computer shop for reformat. Then backed home I downloaded the new Windows 10 OS and after completed the laptop cannot be used. I think maybe the shop that I send my laptop do not put all the drivers. and the result my laptop cannot be upgraded and now cannot use anymore. many files located inside and I cannot take them back. so sad. please help me.

A:WHY MY LAPTOP STUCK

First thing to do is run an extended hard drive diagnostic - the root of all the problems could be a bad drive.
F12 at powerup.
This system doesn't have official support for anything newer than Windows 8 -- though some have reported 10 will install and run (the audio is the part where the drivers usually fail).

Try bringing up the Advanced Startup Options by tapping F8 as soon as the laptop is turned on.

Then highlight "Last known good configuration" and press <Enter>

Hopefully that will get you into Windows but it won't solve the update problem.

Hi,
I formatted my drive after I saved my favorites and my pictures to CD. Formatting cleared up the problem of two dial up connections. I tried everything on that. The duplicate connection is no more. Finally! Anyway, back to why I am posting again. I want to put the pictures that I saved from the My Pictures folder back to the My Pictures folder. I have set one of them as the new desktop background. (It was before the format). I have looked in Help and Support, but I can't seem to find anything. I have typed in "Export Pictures from CD to My Pictures folder" without the quotes and I get a list of links pertaining to CD recording errors and other things like that. I did right click on a picture in Drive E (my CD-RW) just to see what would come up and I noticed that on the Send To menu that these pictures can be sent to the desktop. Is this what I should do then? Send them to the desktop and open them and send them from here to the My Pictures folder? It can't be that easy, can it? Let me hear from anybody.

Unfortunately I have a work laptop I have to use. I'm running Win7 to write this but I had a few BSODs and it's put me off. Anyway, I can't find the original install files to blank everything and start again (rosettaStone language pack discs & excel)

I've already upgraded the HDD. RAM is 2GB, CPU is dual ~2gb. Win7 experience is 2.2. I've also used TuneUp to check nothing I don't need is running on startup. I've defragged including the pagefile.

As you can imagine XP has got bogged down. I'm running TuneUpUtils and this has definitely improved things a lot but it's such a shock to go back to compared to fairly fresh install of Win7.

It turns out that this laptop isn't actually compatible with win7 and Dell offer NO drivers for it. All the drivers are from intel and microsoft. I guess I shouldn't risk it any more with this laptop on Win7.

I guess what I want to understand is why a reinstall every year or so has to be the only way with everything... just to hard to go the other way...

Try

Manually shut down (hold the power button) the computer (you might have been pushing the Sleep button. If you can't figure it out, just unplug it and let the battery run down.)

Or go to safe mode and do a system restore to before the problem started.

I would check and make sure that the lock is not enabled on the E-Dock.  If you look at the bottom of the right hand side near the rear is a switch.  If you haven't tried already make sure that the switch is not set to the locked setting and then check to see if you are able to eject the notebook.

When a laptop is starts, you usually would usually see something like the following:
1) "Windows is loading files..."
2) "Starting Windows"
3) "Screen where you log into your computer"
4) "Computer Desktop"

However, what I saw when I started the computer was the following:
1) "Windows is loading files..."
2) "Starting Windows"
3) "Light grey screen where I can see and move only the mouse cursor"
and an intermittent low volume cricket noise (for lack of better words)
4) no change from 3)

Someone gave me a free refurbished version of ASUS U50F-RBBAG05 because it gave the above problem.
So, despite being a noob (but not a noob noob) at fixing computers, I tried to make a clean install of Windows 7.
However, the laptop decided that it didn't want to install the software--(clicked on install button and waited 3 hours).
The laptop just stayed at 0% progress.

So, I was like, "Okay, so let's TRY to restore this thing back to factory settings via Recovery Partition."
Although I waited on the Light grey screen for about 30-60 minutes, I finally got to the screen that I needed.
Alas, although the laptop did "start" the recovery process, it ended up the same--0% progress and did not budge

I know that the Windows 7 installation disc was not the problem--I had 3 other installation discs (all legit).
Since the laptop decided to not move from 0%, I figured that getting the ASUS res... Read more

A "cricket noise" and Windows failing to load during startup is a good indication the hard drive may be dying.

I got someone's old laptop with Win XP on it.  It has a lot of problems which I was going to ask for help in another thread, but now I have a new problem.

I ran a CHKDSK while in Windows, and it told me it couldn't complete in read only mode.  I set it to run the next time Windows starts.  Now it's in an endless cycle of scanning.  It will scan (which takes hours), reboot and scan again.  If I hit a button to skip the scan, it hangs and won't start Windows.  If I try to boot to Safe Mode, it hangs as well.

The last thing to load before it hangs while booting to Safe Mode is:
WINDOWS\System32\Drivers\aswRvrt.sys

I'm lost, I don't know what to do at this point.  Any suggestions?

Thanks!
Drew

I'd suggest posting over in the XP forums as I haven't worked with that in many years.

I'll go ahead and mention that this might be on the wrong forum as this machine might have had another OS installed but I could find out that this had Vista from the factory (which version of Vista I couldn't find out) so I guess this is my best bet.
Machine isn't mine, we borrowed it from our uncle for my sister to use, computer illiterate as she is she can't even tell me which OS it was using (likely W8 but I never touched it either and asking my uncle about it wouldn't feel right).
After a couple weeks it stopped working out of the blue, she tells me she was using it one night and it had little battery left and it ended up running out and the machine shut down and she went to sleep, next morning it wouldn't boot.
I imagine the problem is the battery, I used Hiren's BootCD to test it a bit and everything seems fine, I ran a bunch of tests with Mini Windows XP and only thing that seems out of place is the fact that it won't detect a battery when using one of the apps it has that deals with the battery, the laptop does work without being plug in though so I don't know if that's really it.
I tried recovery mode on startup but that doesn't work either, it just goes back to bootlooping.
It's a Compaq.

Any help would be appreciated.

Try running Startup Repair: Startup Repair: frequently asked questions

Do you have a Vista install DVD you can use to attempt repairs? If not, post here and ask Peter (Ex_Brit) to send you the link to the versions of Vista you need, 32 or 64. Include your E-mail address mucked up, like abc at xyz DOT com then edit your post and remove it as soon as you receive the link.

The ISO Peter provides has both SP1 and SP2 applied.

Using that, follow the directions in the link I provided.

Hi to all. I have a Toshiba L305D. Recently i updated vista home and after the update my system would only loop. So i decided to do a clean install of vista which worked out pretty well until i updated again. It was stuck at framework update for more than two hours so smart me choose shutdown and it still didn't shutdown so i manually did it. When i hit the on switch it stuck at the Toshiba welcome screen even if i hit f12 or f2 it still wouldn't budge. So i took out the hard drive and booted it and saw something about Ethernet controller media failed. I formatted the hard drive using my desktop plugged it in and still the same so i decided to install XP on it using my desktop now it says error loading OS. That only happens if i don't hit f12 or f2, if i hit f2 or f12 it sticks at Toshiba screen any advice.

Hi -

Wipe the HDD with KillDisk --> http://jcgriff2.com/0x1/killdisk_imgburn.html

Use your Toshiba OEM Vista recovery DVDs to reinstall Vista.

If problems still occur, test HDD --> http://www.techsupportforum.com/2828431-post7.html

I bought a used HP laptop hard drive for upgrading my Lenovo G550 with CPU ugraded with Intel T9300 DUO CORE 2.50ghz (HP Hard Drive: Laptop Thin HDD 500GB SERIAL ATA DISC DRIVE S/N W627S9NL P/N 756731-001 MFG Seagate Technologies DOM 8/2015)  I was happy to see that the hatd drive had Windows 7 already installed because I had already bought a separate legitimate Windows 10 Pro License Key for the upgrade. I was able to go online and download the Windows 10 upgrade and used my purchased legitimate license key to activate my the upgrade.  While doing the installation there was some HP software that was still on the HD. I thought it would be good to have some extra security protocols, so I also installed the WinMagic Securedoc Bootloader v1.2.12 and registered the HP Drive Encryption  with password and Security Questions for secondary access. The Windows 10 was activated and all looked great. But when I restarted the laptop I put in my password for windows and then it goes to this HP Drive Encryption Screen comes up. I put in the password and it's accepted - and then the screen goes blank...not off..just blank with a flashing cursor that doesbn't react to inputs. I tried leaving it on for a day or so, and still nothing.  There's nothing I can change in BIOS Setup that works so far.I've also tried downloading Reimage on USB and re-setting the boot sequence but no good. Even tried a boot disc, but nothing there either. I will try again.... Read more

Sorry ... I missed the part about you having a Win10 license.  I thought you were trying to activate 10 using the HP OEM license and that was causing problems. I don't use the HP encryption apps -- as personally, having recently finished a career in InfoSec, I find the whole emphasis on encryption of PCs to be laughable -- but my guess is that you're basically out of luck. If it were my drive, I would WIPE the drive of all its contents and then install Win10 afresh.  A good product for doing that is DBan:  http://tiptopsecurity.com/how-to-securely-wipe-your-hard-drive-with-dban-erase-your-data-for-good/ Once your drive is clean, then just install Win10 on it. That said, with any luck, one of the HP EXPERTS will probably come along and tell you how to bypass their encryption. Good Luck
