Q: How do I continue to use old versions of Skype?


I have two computers, one desktop and one laptop. I've been using Skype for several years, but as of today it won't let me sign in anymore, it says I am using an old version and MUST update, which I refuse. I absolutely hate the new generation versions of Skype that looks like an iPhone chat and I rather not use it at all. But surely there must be a way around this? Any suggestions? I read a guide from 2014 that said it's possible to bypass by backing up the old version of Skype.exe and then installing the latest version, but Skype's website won't even let me download the latest version, so I can't try to see if even that works.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

Trying to get to grips with new 8.1 laptop.

It has Skype 7.26 pre-installed, i.e full program >80MB.

But it also has "Apps" - Skype and Skype WiFi.

Why do I need all these? Can I delete the Apps? (I'd probably only use the desktop program which I am used to.)

I am using Windows 7 Pro 64-bit and recently I was forced to download latest Skype version, which I believe is ok for Win 10.
I want to use the Split window chat but am unable to do since that is only designed for Win10.
Please advise if I can download/use previous versions to my comfort.

Am having major performance problems with Skype running on a Packard Bell PC with one of the on-board Realtek sound cards.

The computer runs fine, no malware detected, no viruses detected, etc. Everything generally in good working order.

As soon as you launch Skype and it trys to sign on, it becomes massively 'laggy'. When it does respond and you verify the audio settings as required you can just about make a call to someone on skype, or the test call and it disconnects you almost immediately and you get a loop of the disconnect sound about 10-15 times.

Tis a P4 2.8HT, 512MB RAM, 1024 Virtual Memory - 100GB+ Free HDD space. XP HE SP3.

My money's on it being poorly written sound drivers, but have tried both versions on Packard Bells site and the generic ones available on Realtek's site to no avail.

Also tried version 3.0 and 3.1 of Skype from Oldversion.com with no change.

Any ideas?

Wireless or wired network ?

If wired and if you believe it's a driver issue there's not much you can do. Try deactivating HD audio in the BIOS and reverting to AC97.

512MB of RAM is considered the bare minimum if you want XP to be responsive, see if adding another 512MB helps.

Previously worked on http://forums.techguy.org/virus-other-malware-removal/1074941-what-going-here.html#post8513347 was looking good it was running faster almost back to normal. next day it's all back again I do not know what I did wrong. going to take it much slower this time not that i didn't do it wright the first time.

#1 Firefox loads web pages non stop. I use Noscript and grease monkey to assist my we-todd-nest from doing something stupid.

#2 All programs take forever to open. Steam, Yahoo messenger, and Skype do not always connect to internet if at all.

#3 SUPERantiSpyware remover currently not detecting errors but will post current result after it finishes scanning. This step took over 3 hours last time and it's been running for 1hr 20 min as of 8:19 NYC time.

#4 Downloads are slugish sometimes i have to pause and restart because the load rate goes to zero and stays that way till i mess with it.

#5 I'm a user of avg comp skills. I understand computers and basic programing like VB and Excel. I'm good at following directions just bad at English.

#6 I cannot thank you all enuf for your help.

Hello all, I just got a new machine. Acer-5542-5462 with windows 7.

Of course it comes with the McAfee and Norton trials. Is either one worth purchasing when the trial runs out? If not, is there another AV that I can buy thats worth a darn?

I'd also like to get one or two free AVs for backup..Malwarebytes is one I'll probably get right away, any other good free ones I that you folks would recommend?

As far as purchasing one, I don't see why you should when you can get a free program that works well. I've used Kaspersky and it was good. Now I use Microsoft Security Essentials. It's free and since it's made by Microsoft, I figure they know Windows better than most companies..

I noticed that skype has send to all skype contacts a certain link, to one contact even multiply links.
this all happens on the same day: 17th december from 14:30 -14:39.
I haven't seen any spam send anymore after that.
Skype support told me to reset my password, I did, and to download safety scanner from microsoft. they proviced me with the link.
when I try to open the link, the browser cannot load the page, it is stuck in a loop:  sometimes I see a page, but just for a second or even less, then mostly white page, and browser keeps trying to load the page. and in chrome : a  little shield symbol on the right side of the address bar says that it's trying to load scripts from unauthenticated sources. this message dissappears very quickly.
I have skype installed on two laptops, and on my smartphone (iphone).
The problem I told about, is on one laptop that has no antivirus. I did not yet checked the other laptop, if the microsoft page opens or not. but I do have bitdefender internet security (paid) installed on the second laptop.
I want to be sure the laptop that has the problem, is virusfree.

A:spam send in skype account to all skype contacts - cannot load page safety scan

I downloaded the safety scanner from microsoft from my other laptop without any issue.
copied it to a usb, put it on the problem laptop, a full scan and nothing found.
I realize I did had a antivirus paid version (kaspersky internet securuity) on the laptop, as I first said that it had no antivirus.
I only disabled it because it had problems running.
Now I enabled it, updated it and run a full scan. nothing found.
I don't know if skype is the cause and not a virus?  the skype workers told me that the cause could be anything (email, virus on computer).
I mostly use skype on iphone, and here I'm confused with what the skype workers said: one said that iphone can not be infected, so no need to check the iphone.
an other said: you can download an app from app store to scan for viruses, because it is possible that the virus is on the iphone.
This is really not clear anymore.

You might see if creating a new shortcut for it directly from the .exe file of Skype may work instead.

I've experienced some problems and discomfort with skype for win8:
- not able to show screen,
- terrible design,
- very slow response (i.e. when I click RMB, the menu shows up in several seconds, and I expect to see it immideately),
- doesn't understand links to skype chat like skype:?chat&blob=blahblahblah, when I click it nothing happens.

I've also tried skype for desktop, it was even worse:
- when I changed online status to invisible (i've also tried with N/A), skype stopped to receive and send messages,
- when this or another error occurs, I try to kill skype process via task manager, TM then firstly says that skype is not responding (so i am trying to kill process), after that TM stops responding as well.
So when i've tried skype for desktop i had to reboot my laptop about 5 times in a day.

Now I've installed skype from Store back, but I still need to go to skype chat.

Could anyone please help me either make skype 5.x/6.x work on win8, or enter the chat which i need?

I have always used Skype for Desktop and only recently found that there is a Skype Modern App on my system.
From what I have read it would seem the best plan would be to ditch the App and just continue with the desktop version.
Have there been any recent changes that would make the the Modern App a better solution than the Desktop version?

They have updated it recently so it doesn't continue to ring even when you have answered the desktop version which is why I uninstalled it in the first place. This means in theory you could install both and answer whichever you felt like at the time.

I prefer the look of the desktop version personally so I never re-installed the Modern App version.

Not so much a software support question, but this is the best I could figure it'd go into... but if I have an Office 365 subscription that includes 60 minutes of Skype calling a month, do I still need to purchase a Skype number so people can call me and for people to know who's calling them?

I tested it out as it is right now and when I call my dad's phone, says "Unknown caller."

I have tried everything imaginable to get rid of these two.  I can delete Skype via 
control panel, but it comes back and re-installs itself.  
Click to call will not go away.  When I try to use the control panel I get a message that 
says, "close Chrome browsers to uninstall".   I've tried doing that and still get that same message.
I've even uninstalled Chrome and re-installed it with the same result.
These two are like a bad dream.   
Any help with completely deleting both would be appreciated.

Whenever I try to restore a file (right click > "Restore previous versions") that I know has recently changed, I see:
"There are no previous versions available" on the file's "Previous Versions" tab.

I've been running Windows 7 x64 Business for a long time now, and I have never seen it available for any of my files.

On "System Properties" > "System Protection", it says "On" under "Protection" for my only drive - C:. I have been able to manually create a system restore point.

I have "Restore system settings and previous versions of files" checked upon clicking the "Configure" button. 10% (93.14GB) is dedicated to "Disk Space Usage" on that same dialogue box.

Some threads have suggested that not having administrative shares enabled can prevent this service and suggest enabling it by adding a reg key, which I have done.:

TCP/IP netbios helper service is automatically starting successfully.

Any ideas how I can get this working?

You might want to take a look at this tutorial for restoring Previous Versions in Vista. The process might be the same (or very similar) in Windows 7. How to Restore Previous Versions of a File and Folder in Vista

I can't help you with any other suggestions to get your Previous Versions working, but as a workaround in the mean time, if you need to repair or restore previous versions of any files, you can download the free app ShadowExplorer http://www.shadowexplorer.com/ which is an alternative program for Vista and Windows 7 for the Previous Versions feature that is not available for all editions.

I have been using Skype paid calls for business usage and have huge problems with the Other side not hearing me well or at all. It used to work OK but now I have to restart hub or reconnect or just wait . This is for calls to International. If I call skype to skype it is OK most of time. My provider BT has checked all hub settings and network seems fine. I am about to give up on skype to non skype as a business option and the fact I am spending good money and cant get instant support really doesnt help. I am out of ideas

I (stupidly and accidentally) deleted all files in my "Downloads" folder. As in, hard deleted them - not to the recycle bin.

I right-clicked the folder and picked "Properties", "Previous versions". Lo and behold, there were several previous versions. I opened the one from today, browsed through it, and it looked good - all 300+ GB of my files were there. So I went back to "Previous versions" and clicked "Restore". It managed to restore a few files, but most files it said were "missing", or that it needed "administrator access" for them. (I am obviously admin on this computer.) So I clicked "Skip" for those, and let it carry on.

After the restore process was done, it had only successfully restored about ten files. When I now click "Previous versions" for my "Downloads" folder, to at least get a list of the files that are missing, it suddenly says there are no files available! But before I did the restore, there were several restore points there. What happened?

A:Problem with previous versions: "No previous versions available"

Next time you want to recover a folder - rename the currently existing folder before restoring the old version as it will otherwise get overwritten.

Also suggest mounting system restore points and manually copying the required files. See the following software:

I've set up a scheduled daily backup of particular data folders on my C drive. The backups are taking place as scheduled, and the latest versions of the files are appearing in the backup. But when I use Win. Explorer and right-click>Restore Previous Versions, no previous versions show up. Daily Windows restore points are also being created at startup. I am running a standalone laptop and backing up to an external 2TB drive with plenty of available space.

I have checked the following and all are correct.

Previous Versions Requirements
System Protection for the C drive in ON
Files that are not system files are included in Windows Backups.
Volume Shadow Copy - Service set to Manual (appears as 'stopped' when checked with Task Manager)
Server - Service set to Started and Automatic.
TCP/IP NetBios Helper - Service set to Started and Automatic.
Workstation - Service set to Started and Automatic.

What am I missing?

i decide to format my compaq laptop,while formatting setup cannot continue as blue screen appears saying setup cannot continue coz it might b hard disk drives are not powered on. i quit setup by pressing f3.

Hello Guys

I am using W10 on a Acer Laptop.

I have uninstalled Google Chrome, but when I enter a search term and press Enter a window pops up from Google 'Before you continue', so the page cannot load.

So I think there must be a hidden Google link on the computer.

I just spent over 1/2 hour setting up my information and went to preview it to post and was THEN told I was not logged in and my whole post disappeared. I tried going back to that page so I could save it to a clipboard but nothing on your site took me back.

I have a major problem with 2 computers and some really bad bug ...or worm or virus or bot or whatever and right now I don't have the energy to start over. Was too excited about actually finding help by joining a forum but no warning on my posting beforehand. Good luck to other new members. Maybe they will have better luck than what happened to my post. After fighting this problem since March, I cannot start over with a post.

I'm not previewing this one so maybe it will post, although I wish I could go back to my original new posting that I was done with but it vanished cause even though I activated and was welcomed..apparently I was not "logged in" and my post was sent to neverneverland and it is too involved and complicated to start from scratch at this time. You do need a warning or a way to save it to the clipboard before erasing it.

Sorry to be upset but this bug has consumed too much of my life and is ruining my computer accesses.

You cannot even start a post if you're not logged in. As soon as you click on the "New" button you will get a prompt to either register if you're not a member or log in if you have already registered so I don't know what happened. There is nothing on the site that takes you back to a previous screen, you are right, that is done by your own browser. It's possible the cookie was blocked or something related to one of your security programs, that's all I can think of.

But if you've run the scans that are require then you should still have the logs so you just need to post them along with a very brief description of the problem.

Hi. My computer has been infected. I ran several malware and adware cleaning programs (malware bytes, kaspersky, adware cleaner, zemana, windows defender ( i managed to get in back on) and hitman pro. ) as per your website instructions. It has detected the malwares and adwares and cleaned them . However , when i tried using it again, i still get ads popping out from website like toronto.public.library.com and some other random website. Also , it seems that when i try to play games (steam games) - blade and soul , it seems that ads ( or something )are popping out whenever i right click on my mouse ,but gets blocked immediately. It doesnt affect my gaming , but it bothers me quite a bit to have " that weird thing (maybe ads) that pops and gets blocked immediately ( there is no indication that its an ad that got blocked since there isnt any warning , just my guess) . Any way that you could help me?

Yes there is a way,

Go to control panel>classic view>user accounts

Click on change user account control settings, and turn it off. It will ask for a restart, restart your computer.

But turning off uac is not recommended by vista forum

* Copy the contents of \Windows\Minidump to another (temporary) location somewhere on your machine.
* Zip up the copy.
* Attach the ZIP archive to your post using the "paperclip" (file attachments) button.
*If the files are too large please upload them to a file sharing service like "Rapidshare" and put a link to them in your reply.

I have a Very old Photo Program I have been using for years with no problems, even though I have upgraded my Windows Program several times. Now, I recently got a new computer that is using Windows 7 and my program will not install! :-( I keep getting an error and do not know anything else to do to get it to install to my computer.

I have done several tries of other avenues to install but to no avail. Can anyone help me? Here is the Error Message I get when I am trying to install my program "The Print Shop Photo Pro":

I have a small annoying problem. Everytime I boot up my computer I get the splash screen then it tells me to press F1 to continue. This is a recent occurence I have not made any changes to my computer and I have checked the BIOS and it is set to boot from the HDD first. Whilst it does not in any way affect the running of the computer it is annoying. Can anyone help?

Usually when I see this, it's the BIOS with some minor error, like it can't see a hard drive when the setting says there's supposed to be one. I'm surprised it doesn't spell it out.

You might have lost some hardware, like your optical drive. Start pulling stuff off the motherboard and see if the error goes away. Also disable everything you don't need in BIOS. It's a good idea to do that anyways.

Good Day Sir! I have a problem regarding XP installation, when i finished installing xp in my pc, possibly it will restart, then when it boot, nothing happens to my installation, and when I see my drive c it display new partition again and what happen to my installation? I would like some help.

I tried to install MP3 Butcher on my Dell Dimension XPS T600. It crashed and will not reboot. The following error message occurs.

I tried to repair the installation using the CD and the 3 floppies. I even tried a parallel installation. Each time I get the following error:

Make sure any hard disk drives are powered on and properly connected to your computer, and that any disk-related hardware configuration is correct. This may involve running a manufacturer-supplied diagnostic or setup program.

I tried the atapi.sys floppy to setup my 20 GB hard drive, but to no avail.

Any other suggestions? Does this mean I can't even re-install if I had to?

Something to try:
Need a DOS or a win95 or win98 boot disk with FDISK on it.

If fdisk sees a drive Esc out of it and run the following:

fdisk /mbr

This will rebuild the masterboot record and may allow you to reinstall.
If fdisk does not see the drive go into your bios and make sure it sees the drive.

I've just go myself a PC with Vista. I'm trying to do two things.
First, Does anyone know how to switch off that annoying 'Continue' box I get every time I try to run a program?
Second, Can I run regedit in Vista? There doesn't seem to be a run option anywhere.

I have d/l an installed Ad-aware SE on a windows ME machine, it found over 1000 entries and removed them, but the computer continues to get popups constantly. I tried installing spybot search and destroy but it fails to install. I've run 2 online virus scans. One with housecall came back clean, one with panda soft. showed files in the _restore, so I deleted them and tried again, but now it locks up in the middle of the scan.

Now find and delete (use windows search tool)


navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Go to Start > Run and type %temp% in the Run box. The Temp folder will open. Click Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Finally go to Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.

I have Windows XP SP3. I am trying to carry out a repair, but each time I get the message "Setup cannot continue because the version of Windows on your computer is newer than the version on the CD". I have set the bios so that CD-Rom is the first boot and re-started, but Windows loads as normal. I can only access the CD by right-clicking on 'My computer'.

I have read about 'slipping?', but, as a novice, didn't understand.

Can someone please explain in simple terms?

Event Viewer event 2511, the server was unable to recreate the share DAW because the directory C:/Network Drive/DAW no longer exists.  I tried to net share DAW/delete.  That did not work.  What should I do to get rid of this warning?

Hmm I think I posted this in the wrong section before, cause I posted here about 3 months ago, with the problem I have now, and when I posted it, it was in this forum. So I guess I'll re-iterate my problem again here. Whenever I'm doing something on this computer a random popup, just well, pops up. On Internet Explorer which I might use, once every four months. I'm a firefox kid now. Sometimes I'm not even on the internet and it pops up. Now I did a AVG scan, and an Ad-Aware scan AND a new SUPERAntispyware scan and STILL I have a problem... any suggestions for me?

Good evening. Download TDSSKiller.zip from Kaspersky from here and save it to your Desktop. You will then need to extract the file(s) from the zipped folder.
To do this: Right-click on the zipped folder and from the menu that appears, click on Extract All...
In the Extraction Wizard window that opens, click on Next> and in the next window that appears, click on Next> again.
In the final window, click on Finish
Please close all open programs as this may result in a reboot being necessary.
Double click TDSSKiller.exe to begin. Click Start scan and allow the tool to do just that. One the scan has completed, if the tool has identified anything allow it to carry out it's default action(s) - you'll need to click Continue where appropriate. Finally, if it prompts you to reboot your machine, please click Reboot Now and ensure that your machine does so.
If the scan finds nothing, please click the Report button and let me have a copy of the text file that opens. If you reboot your machine, the log, which i'd like to see, will be located at the root of you hard drive as C:\TDSSKiller.Version_Date_Time_log.txt.
Please check that you get the one with the right date and time.

Thank you so much for the help. I ran the TDSSKiller program and there was a hit. The program removed it.

I had to download it to another computer and run it from a cd. The infected computer would not open IE or Firefox. There was a fake antivirus program running on it claiming the programs were infected.

I rebooted into save mode and ran malwarebytes. It found 27 infected items. I removed all of them and let it come up in normal mode. It is still having issues. AVG is still stopping threats. Can you give some advice as to next steps?

My computer won't continue booting. It always say "Searching for boot rEcord from IDE-0..OK" then it stops. I tried using a bootable disk but it does the same way. I just installed a new CDROM drive. Do you think that affected it. I think I changed something in the setup(the setup that appears when you press "del") but I can't remember what. Can anyone help me? ANy suggestions? Thanks

A:Won't continue Booting

Go into setup, search and execute autodetect IDE drives; also in Advanced Setup check that the first boot option is set to A: (this just in case we need it), save and restart ur pc. The fact that it didn't boot up from a floppy could be the floppy itself (bad boot sector). Now try again from ur HD, if it stops at the same point, try from a good boot disk. Then just execute "sys c:" (without quotation marks) and it should be done.
