Win 10 file options setting.

Q: Win 10 file options setting.

Where is the option setting for Win 10 to NOT display a file as anything but it's name?
Running around this AM with Hurricane Irma in the offing taking pics of house and grounds. My camera records a JPEG and a Raw file. When I download (to backup) the images on to my Desktop it takes Win 10 f-ing forever to stop trying to display the Raw files. Obviously I've got something set so Win 10 can't ignore the files. What? I set the view option to detail only but it still takes an inordinate amount of time. Arg! Advice please.

Preferred Solution: Win 10 file options setting.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

my laptops display shows everything elongated/squashed and as for display setthings I only have:1152x864 ,1024x678 and 600x800
my laptop has an 17.3 inch pnp monitor, win7 os, 64 bit i5 core, vga adapter

at the color settings 32/16 I saw that I had more display settings: advanced settings->adapter>list all modes and none of the listed modes had 1280x800 you posted for the 17-18 inch monitors, every option still had a squashed look and it looked even poorly when I choose a lower resolution.

what should I do?
ps sorry for my english spelling

A:why don't I have the same setting options as you?

This is more than likely a display driver issue, please complete your systems specs a bit more thoroughly, i.e. ATi HD5770, ASUS MRP45678ie, etc w/o knowing your hardware it's very hard to really help you.

I am having difficulty setting power options. If I enter and then save my settings, I get a popup saying 'revisions don't match'. No explanation, no help in getting them to match. Are there default settings, or can someone give me an example of some working settings. I'd like the monitor to go off, machine go to standby, then hibernate. But when to have discs spin down? I hope this is clear, and I'm sure it's a stupid question, but what can you do? Thanks. excentric

A:Setting Power Options

Hi excentric and Welcome to Bleeping Computer,Possibly because Standby and Hibernate are more or less the same thing. This option quickly saves your work and puts your computer in a virtual sleep.....a delicate mode between on and off.If you want to, Turn Off the computer when you are done for the day.You will have to power off the monitor manually.

Hi. I have been Googling this, but haven't been able to find the information I need. Maybe someone can help here?

I want the option to open a DVD/CD in Windows Explorer to show on the Autoplay option window that appears when I insert a disc into the drive. I am asked every time I put in a disc, which is what I want; the option is there in the configuration settings, but it doesn't appear in the autoplay window.. See screenshots.

I can remove the Open in Windows Media Player option if only four items will show (but how??)

A:Setting Autoplay options

I just discovered that if I insert a DVD-RW with video files on it, I get the above 'annoyance'. If the same DVD-RW has jpegs on it, I get a different autoplay window open, with different options (including 'Open with Windows Explorer)> I'd thought (clearly wrongly) the action was media dependent, not as to what was on the disc.

So how do I get the Windows Explorer option for a disc with .VOB files on it?

Thanks again.

Hi All,

I have had many problems since I installed Vista Ultimate, both major and minor. I have solved some and am still working on others. I won't try to adress them all now. The problem with folder view settings is one of the most aggravating, though not operationally significant. Still, it does CONSTANTLY Piss Me Off. Pardon my language, but it IS appropriately descriptive. Regardless of whatever settings I choose, the next time I go to that folder or any other, they have reverted to some set of system defaults, which I CAN'T CHANGE. Several I don't use and some I don't want or actually get in the way of what I want to do, such as "AutoArrange". (If I ever meet the person who invented "AutoArrange" I will probably be arrested for assault.)

Does ANYONE know what I can do to set my folders the way I want them and retain the settings?

I recently picked up a old HP psc 2510 photosmart all-in-one printer at a yard sale for 10 bucks in great condition. Problem is, it was missing all documentation and driver CD. Fortunately, HP included "in-OS" drivers for Win 7, so I was able to set it up over USB very easily. But now I'm trying to get it up and running with wireless printing, which it supports on XP, but isn't perfectly ported to 7.

Following the advice from the 4th comment on Re: HP PSC 2510 Photostmart drivers for WIndows 7 - Page 4 - HP Support Forum, I was able to connect to it via my wifi network when I plug an Ethernet cable into the printer.

Now, this works, but being a huge nerd, I think it'd be even better if I could set the printer up to be completely wireless. I'm not much of an expert on the finer workings of wireless connections, but I think it's possible to do this with an ad hoc netwrok. But I can't find any instructions for doing this on 7. Closest thing I found was this page with instructionsfor XP, which I was unable to follow on 7.

Since the printer has an on-screen option to enable or disable the "wireless radio" which can only be turned on when the ethernet cable is unplugged, I assume this functionality is to broadcast the "hpsetup" ad hoc network from the printer without it being connected to a router (since I don't think it can connect to an actual wifi network wirelessly; but if it can, it'd be great to know how to do that too!). But even when I do... Read more

A:Options for setting up a wireless printer

Instructions for creating an ad hoc network in Windows 7 can be found here:
Windows 7: How to Create an Ad Hoc Network | kombitz.com

I also wonder if maybe it has anything to do with encryption?
It seems that with the linkout you have provided with instructions
for setting this up in XP describes setting up WEP encryption connection
through the HP setup page. Wondering if the device you are making the
ethernet connection to is handing the printer an IP by checking that option in
the setup through Win7 (Automatically obtain IP address therefore it should) but check if the router is also using
WEP encyption which whilst reading the documentation seemed to be required for the printer.

Is that making sense! I'd start with that first

As I bought my laptop when I was living abroad, it has an American (I suppose) style keyboard, where (for example) the number keys 1 to 5 in Caps are marked (and produce the symbols) ! @ # $ %. Given that the laptop sits on the desk mostly, I find it a lot easier when doing emails or whatever to use a USB keyboard on my lap, but this has a UK layout, where the same keys in Caps are marked ! " ? $ % ... but produce the same symbols as the first example (laptop's own keyboard).

I don't suppose there is any way to get Windows to recognise the two different keyboard layouts, so that the USB one produces the symbols depicted on the keys? Can I remap it without affecting the laptop one? Can't work out how, if so.

After using the RTM build for about a week with no issues, the option to open a folder in the same window when clicked, is no longer working properly.

Now, when clicked, all folders are opening up in a new window and this is very annoying! I havent changed any settings and the folder options are still set correctly. I have tried changing the folder options to see if it would change this behaviour but it did not. What is really strange is that this also happened on my first install of Vista RTM before reinstalling this copy, after about the same time of usage-about 1 week.

Has anybody ran into this or know what is happening? I havent installed any new hardware or software and I havent tried any repairs or recovery yet. I wanted to ask before I started poking around and making any changes in the OS.

Here's my problem with Vista.

When I go into any folder for the first time, it comes up with a set of random things to sort the folders by, and random view settings.

I want every folder to have the "details" view by default. Also, I want the tabs "Type", "Size", and "Date Modified" that I can click on to sort these, with "Type" being the default selected one.

This is how I had things in WinXP. All I had to do was click "Apply to folders" in the folder options. I do this in Vista, also, I do have "Remember each folder's view settings" checked. Yet it makes up a random set of view settings for any folder I haven't manually set myself.

So, how do I make Windows Vista stop coming up with random view settings for folders? When I click on a folder of pictures I still want it in "Details" view, with "Type", "Size", and "Date Modified" tabs. With "Type" selected as the default to sort by.

Yet, it appears in "Large Icons" view, with "Date Taken", "Tags", "Size", and "Rating" as the only sort by options.

How do I stop this madness?

I have strange issue with Windows 8.1 x64 Pro with Media Center. Since it was upgraded from 8, there have been issues with Software Store. Despite internet connection working fine with Firefox and other applications, Store would not connect to the internet. After long investigation I found out that Proxy server setting in Control Panel -> Internet Options -> Connections -> LAN Settings must be disabled in order to get Store working again. For some reason proxy server only stays disabled for the current session, which means when the windows is rebooted it comes back enabled again. My question is how to make it stay permanently disabled, as I don't use any proxy. Thanks.

Hi, I have xp home eddition with 4 user accounts. 2 accounts work fine the other 2 are having problems.

The desktop settings will not change. You can click what you want and hit apply but changes will not be made and when you open them up again they are back to where they were (which is different to what they should be).

Same for internet options. They have gone to 'never dial a connection' also cannot change home page etc. In the two problem accounts the internet is inaccessable.

Also when you click 'start' button the whole left hand column is blank.

The whole appearance of the accounts is like half xp style and half classic windows style.

I have done a sytem restore (that wont work) says no changes have been made, run adaware and spybot plus avg virus scan (all were updated).

The 2 working accounts are working perfectly!!

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Unfortunately I wont be able to try out all the helpful information you are going to give me until tomorrow night.

I hope someone can help.

I have a lot of music files. I have ended up with many duplicates, perhaps because when I was learning Windows I didn't quite understand the filing system. To date, I am not sure I do! The column # which states the 'Track Number' which to me is undesirable (I have no use for it), seems to be my problem! When there is a track number - it seems to put it first before all else in the 'Title', namely before the title of the song or the name of the Band.... thereby sorting instead of the title of the song, it sorts by the Track number. Even if I change the defaults and take out the Track # column, it doesn't seem to make a difference when sorting - it still insists on sorting by Track number. The only way I can change this, it seems, is by going into each and every individual file property and physically changing this! I hasve already put many hours into this, and it still seems to be an overwhelming job! Is this not what computers are for, to make life easier.

The Control Panel / Folder Options / File Types menu has some serious problems, I'm hoping somebody can help me out. The "Advanced" button has a lot of options I'd like to use, like changing file icons.

The problem is, when I use the File Types window to change which program to associate with a file type, the "Advanced button" is replaced with a "Restore" button. It says I customized my settings, and I can use this button to restore the default. But removing the "Advanced" button from any file type you actually customize in this window, it pretty much ruins the functionality of that window.

Anyone know how to get the "Advanced" options when you've customized a file type?

Also, another small annoyance, AVI and other video files are listed as "ATI File Player" files when I highlight them. Of course, I've customized them to be Media Player Classic files in the File Types window. They do open in Media Player Classic, but it still calls them ATI File Player files. Also, it uses no icon, which is a problem since I can't access the Advanced menu to select the proper icon. This is the thing I customized, and it seems it won't let me change it 100%, still keeping a few references to the "default" setting. Is there a way to make my setting the default in there?

A:File Types, problems with options...

I don't believe you can do this with respect to customized associations. The icon will be defined by the application itself and is a part of its internal coding.

You can see an example in how Irfanview loads its "custom" icon in the registry.

First, I turned on File History the first of the month, set the 'Back up my files' to daily and it now reports that the last backup was on 5/9/2016, about a week after I set it up, and viewing the data seems to support that, nothing dated past May 9. Is there something else I need to do or do I have a problem?

Second, if I select 'Keep my backups' 1 month, does it delete them all after 1 month, or does it just get rid of the older versions of the backups?

I do not want to open another instance of a program that is already open.

When I click on a file in explorer (and the program for that file is already open) the file is opened in another copy of the program.

 Hello Moderators,Members and Guests
When opening a file, I used to have the open check box, and the save check box options. I must have clicked on something, because now i am presented with only the save or cancel option. I have tried to find out how to gain the open option again, but so far no luck. I am running Windows 7, and I use Foxit PDF reader. I will be eternally grateful for any help from the good people of Bleeping Computer.Thank you for your time

When I click on "send error report" and the next window pops up and has the link to click "for more information"..... It always tells me that there is no extension associated for it to open and for me to got to controlpanel/folder options and create one. PLEASE tell me how to do this! I tried to enter .rtf but it says that it is already being used (or something similiar to that). I checked my desktop, hoping that it would show the ext. but it has the same issue. Thanks!!

Why would you like to send error report? A word of advice from experience: it won't help you.

Why does that "send error report" window show up?

I have a laptop and dektop both running Win 7 64bit that are on a Wireless G network. I also have a 1tb external HD with a usb2 connection. I would like to be able to access my pictures, movies and music on both computers. I would also like to back up those files for safety on the external drive. I would like to be able to add files to either computer and sync them somehow to the other (I have "Good Sync")I'm wondering what the pros and cons of the following setups would be:
1. Store the files on the desktop and access them with the laptop sing the "homegroup" setup in windows 7 and backup to the ext. drive plugged into the desktop
2. I'm considering upgrading the network to "n" and have seen routers with usb ports which I could plug the external drive in to and backup and access the files wirelesly from with either computer.

Which of these setups makes the most sense or maybe a combination of the both or something I haven't heard of. I would like to know before I decide to spend the extra money for the router with the usb port.

Thanks for your help,

I did an upgrade from WinME to XP recently. Everything was fine until I installed an upgrade for my ATI video card software a few hours later. For whatever strange reason it caused XP to render my D drive mostly unreadable (i.e., the file stucture had pretty much disappeared). I tried to do a system restore to a point before the ATI updates, but it didn't work. Whatever XP did to the D drive was permanent and irreversible. FWIW, both drives are formatted FAT32.

All I want from this drive is my mp3 collection which is entirely on that drive. After recovery, I'll simply reformat it and move on. Problem is, I can't seem to find a program capable of getting back my files. VirtualLab for Windows did find my files without problem, but I can't get them back because they charge a ridiculous fee for recovery ($99 for minimum 1 GB). All other free/shareware programs can't seem to identify my files in a format I'm familiar with, so I'm stuck at this point.

Any good free/cheap software options for getting my mp3 files back?

Everything was fine till I tried to upgrade to IE8 from IE7. After loading I could not access the web via IE and my Outlook Express would not connect. I did a system restore back to IE7 but appeared to have lost the IE toolbar and could not find the Internet Options icon in the control panel. On restarting yesterday IE will not load at all. It flashes up for 2 seconds then disappears!
I tried reloading IE7 from Microsoft using my Safari browser but it still wont work
I have also found that I cannot print from the Internet nor from Outlook Express. The printer is active and works ok with all the office programs.
I can connect and print from the internet ok if I use my Safari browser so it is IE related - not sure why the problems with Outlook Express though.

I am running XP Pro as the operating system and Trend PCcillin as security. Turning the firewall and virus guard off made no difference.

Any help would be appreciated.
