Can't check Gmail using IMAP in Thunderbird

Q: Can't check Gmail using IMAP in Thunderbird

I cannot check my e-mail using IMAP in Thunderbird.

I was able to a few weeks ago without problem. Suddenly, I get the whole "Login to imap.googlemail.com failed" error. I am asked to enter my password, which I do, however Thunderbird thinks the password is incorrect for some reason.

I have attempted to google this error, but nearly every instance involves the @gmail.com domain. However, that's not my domain I'm trying to connect with. I'm trying to connect through [email protected], which is associated with Gmail. I have also checked VT's site on resolving these issues, which tells me to use the proper ports and the proper imap site. However, this still doesn't work.

Neither imap.googlemail.com or imap.gmail.com is working. Every one gets the same "login to server imap.gmail.com / imap.googlemail.com (depending on the IMAP server I am trying to connect with) failed".

I've done everything I can think of to force this client to comply. I've enabled IMAP in VT Gmail. I've also set SSL on.

I'm pretty much stumped. I have been able to connect to Gmail without problem previously, and then all of a sudden one day this doesn't work. It's very frustrating. If anyone has any potential solutions, please let me know.

Edit: I found out I can forward my email, and then receive it on another account. It'll have to do.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Thunderbird will not retrieve new mail from IMAP. Only time it will update is when I actually click on one of the many folders I have. I have checked all sync settings and reset the sync duration and nothing changes.

Ubuntu 14.04 as guest os on VirtualBox 4.3
Thunderbird 31.2

A:Thunderbird not pulling new email from IMAP

an additional note.

I've tried on 2 different computers both running Ubuntu. one is version 12.04, the other is 14.x (the latest version) as guest on Virtual Box
Thunderbird 31.1.2 on both systems.

I now notice that sometimes it does bring in new mail but to which folders show new mail and when, is anyones guess. There's no pattern, completely intermittent and random. 95% of time I need to click on the inbox or folders to get it to pull the new messages.

I am a new member and this is my first post about Thunderbird email. Please excuse me if I posted in the wrong place.

I am using Thunderbird 7.0.1 with IMAP on a Windows 7 Professional 32 bit machine. I have Thunderbird setup for IMAP.

When I delete a message on my Android Cell phone using IMAP the messages delete immediately.

Periodically like today, when I want to delete an email from my Thunderbird Inbox or from the Junk folder I repeated hit the delete key on the keyboard or from the toolbar and the messages do not delete - the email stays in the folder.

Sometimes the messages delete OK but many times like today they don't delete.

Since I do not have this issue with my Android phone I am thinking Thunderbird is not communicating with the server. My incoming and outgoing mail is always OK.

Does anyone have an idea what the problem may be and how to fix it?

T'bird version running under Windows

After months of working perfectly, T'bird suddenly corrupted the e-mail folder/sub-folder structure - while I was using Thunderbird to use e-mail. I saw a "flash" or "blink" and then saw that my e-mail structure was messed up.

No messages were lost. The structure simply flattened and all messages stayed in the parent folders.

Because I use an IMAP server, the structure was corrupted on the server as well. Note: the server may have gone bad first, but I doubt it.

On the server I re-created the "tree" - the folder/subfolder structure. It now displays the correct folders/subfolders and their contents.

Thunderbird should - on the next synch - follow suit and recapture the same tree. It doesn't. It correctly displays the parent folders and the messages that are in that level. It does not display the child folders and their contents.

I have 2 computers that run Thunderbird. The same thing happened on each. In the case of the second computer, I didn't start Thunderbird until after I fixed the structure on the IMAP server, but when I started Thunderbird on the 2nd computer, it synched to the "flat", incomplete, structure instead of the structure that exists on the server.

The only change I made recently was to

uninstall and re-install the "SMTP Switch" extension
add an SMTP server
on the 1st PC that went bad.

What happened?

I am having a problem here. I view my email via outlook through gmail. I recently got a blackberry phone and I was told that the only way the email would delete from my phone when I erase on my computer is to receive my email via imap instead of a POP. I have nothing but problems since I did this. My imap server keeps closing my connection on me to my email and I need to re start my computer to open the connection back up. Hope I'm in the right forum. Have two Gmail IMAP email accounts and 4 pop email accounts in one pst file. Has been working fine.

Now pop account emails show up in sent folder as properly sent with time and date sent...they aren't going anywhere. Have sent tests to myself to no avail.

Also emails sent thru Gmail IMAP never make it to any sent folder in Outlook and I get an error message stating that the server will not allow sent emails to be placed in the Outlook sent folder.

If I go on Google and open Gmail, sent emails are in the sent folder.

A:Windows 7 - OUTLOOK 2010 - Gmail IMAP

You'll need to provide exact configuration for each account, just the server stuff, not login or password.

As I understand it, you have two Gmail accounts set up to receive using the IMAP protocol. And you have four accounts using the POP3 protocol. Unfortunately you didn't specify the mail server (Yahoo, AOL, Gmail....) for those accounts.

IMAP does that - you should see the sent mail on Google. I'll check to see if there's and option to also store the sent mail locally (in Outlook). You could help by providing the exact msg that you get and any error codes.

Please also fill in your System Specs (there are lots of HP machines) - see the Easy System Specs in my sig?

I've seen the imap setup directions for gmail also, but it seems as though gmail doesn't actually have the site set up to run for imap. How are you accessing the setup wizard? Do you already have Outlook set up for another email account, or is this the first email account you are trying to create?
If it's the first account being set up in Outlook, go to Control Panel>Mail, then configure a new profile and try setting it up that way. If you are already using Outlook for another email account and want to add Gmail, in Outlook go to Tools>Account Settings.

Hi, I did a test to see if I could restore emails to a gmail account via IMAP if they were backed up in outlook and the gmail account was empty. When I backed up the emails in outlook, I did so by syncing my gmail account with the '[Gmail]/All mail folder' in outlook (including email bodies and attachments). I next deleted all the emails in my gmail account. This subsequently led to the deletion of emails in outlook as you would expect. Finally I copied backups of all emails I made from the Outlook [Gmail]/All mail folder back to that folder

What happens next is that the emails sync back to gmail from outlook but they go back to the 'all mail' folder in gmail. Inbox and sent items remain empty. Is there any way to fix it so that inbox and sent items are repopulated in gmail? Thanks

I am having trouble instructing Outlook 2003 to work with Gmail using IMAP folders/labels, or perhaps I do not understand the workings of IMAP well enough (having previously used POP).

The default IMAP folder presentation is confusing in that it includes "BIN, Deleted Items, Deleted Messages and Trash" folders and "Spam, Junk and Junk Email" folders - which all sound respectively the same. I cannot find an indication of what will be sent where, and how to set up Outlook to send Drafts, Deleted, or Spam/Junk messages to the IMAP folders (rather than the Personal folders) so that I can pick these up on other computers (my laptop when away from home).

I've been running an Outlook 2003 client to my AOL mail using IMAP for quite a while.
I just tried to create a 2nd connection to my gmail account and I have been unable to establish the connection.
I was pretty careful following the gmail instructions - enabling IMAP there; and, I was also pretty careful to follow the instructions on the outlook side. But, I've gone over it and over it and can't find the problem.....

It's caused me to wonder if Outlook 2003 can manage 2 IMAP connections at the same time?

I also noticed that the AOL connection in Outlook requires specific ports for each connection (send/receive) but there was nothing about that in the gmail instructions.

I also know that I've entered smtp.aol.com incorrectly several times. But, unless I'm going blind, I entered smtp.gmail.com correctly for the address of the outgoing mail server.

As everybody I also jumped into gmails imap protocol. Excellant decision, but as everybody knows it turns very slow. The problem is that because imap keeps on syncronizing the folders, the bigger your inbox, outbox, sent, etc. gets, the slower your gmail client is going to respond. Ontop of that for all of you who didn't yet unsubscribe from your all mail label, you are just wasting your time waiting for that inbox to load. hence the first thing is to unsubscribe from the all mail label ( after all those are only duplicates). second you have to keep it as empty as possible.

Here comes my problem.
I get plenty of email from my business associates friends etc, and my inbox always turns full. (slowing everything in gmail) I don't want to delete any of them, just would like it if there were an option to AUTO move all my email older than a specific date to another folder, (local or another gmail account.) in outlook there is the option called archive or rather auto archive. however it won't work with my gmail setup using imap. I have a Gmail account. I keep failing for a month now (except for a fleeting few days) to connect Outlook 2016 via IMAP to Gmail.

I upgraded to Windows 10 from Windows 2 two months ago. I had Office 2007. POP email kept working fine. However, a month ago, the perplexing ?enter your username and password? credentials popup started to be stuck with my Outlook POP account. I can access my Gmail mail in my browser(s), and still do. I uninstalled Office 2007 (assumed that Google stopped supporting it anymore) and installed Office 2016.

I stopped POP.
Over two weeks, I tried to create (about two dozen times) an IMAP Outlook account (incoming mail server imap.gmail.com, SLL 993, Outgoing mail server smtp.gmail.com, TLS 587. I did not choose ?Require logon using SPA?).
In my Gmail's account ?Allow less secure apps? setting is set to ON. However, I persistently failed to get rid of the pesky pop up.

However, one morning two weeks ago (and after two weeks of failure), Outlook suddenly communicated with Gmail with the IMAP account that was created the night before (and wasn?t working), and I saw my Gmail mail in my Outlook.
Three days later, and without any changes on my part, the pesky popup notification again stopped Outlook to connect with Gmail.

I thought that there might be a problem with Outlook 2016. Hence, I did a ?repair? of it. All that did was to delete all of my nearly two dozen filters which I had to manually recreate. Once I tried to yet create a new Outlook IMAP... Read more

I have downloaded Office 2010 Pro Plus from MSDN, got my key after the 1st of May.

In Outlook 2007 SP2 receiving via IMAP from GMAIL worked okay.

Using exactly the same settings in Outlook 2010 I am not able to make a connection to imap.gmail.com, Port 993 using SSL. IMAP is enabled in GMAIL-Control panel, the Account/Password information is correct, sending the test mail via smtp.gmail.com, Port 587 via TLS works fine.

In the Outlook 2010 Beta that connection works as it does in Outlook 2007 SP2.

In Outlook 2010 Final from MSDN there is no chance to connect to the IMAP server - I just got a timeout all the time and had to use POP instead.

This disappoints me, I anticipate more quality coming from Redmont.

I am baffled by this one, and hope someone can help. I've installed literally dozens of gmail accounts into Outlook for clients, but this one is giving me fits. Every time I try to enter the account into a new Outlook 2016, the program hangs and then gives me an error message about an IMAP error, saying "Your IMAP server wants to alert you to the following:" with an error number and a link to "answers" from Google. Now, I know Outlook and Google very well. The suggestions they give are the ones I have already done:

enabled less secure apps access to the account
double-checked that the password is correct and logged into the account online
enabled IMAP connection in Gmail settings
logged in through the CAPTCHA site suggested, though no CAPTCHA appeared
checked to be sure that two-step verification is NOT turned on
created a brand new profile through the Mail section of Control Panel
entered suggested Gmail server and port settings manually
My method is to create a profile without an email account so that I'll have a pst file to contain contacts and calendar. Then, I add the email account. This is just crazy, I've never seen anything like it. Ideas would be most welcome!

It logs in with the password if I paste it into the Gmail page in Safari, but not if I enter it into the box on Windows Mail. If I press cancel while entering the password on Windows Mail, it has an error message like the one that is shown in Thunderbird. It says:

I have a Gmail IMAP/MS Outlook 2007 issue here that I have been trying to figure out for months now.

Here's the issue: Ever Other message I delete from Outlook 2007 that is using Gmail IMAP service show the following error message attached below

"The item cannot be deleted. It was either moved or already deleted, or access was denied."

After doing some tweaking and research on my own I have seem to locate one odd walk around with this error. Whenever I disable email protection within NOD32 AV the error messages stop. So that told me that it may be a issue within Eset NOD32 AV. However, after disabling every single scanner the email protection I am unable to figure out a solution, other then using a different AV product. Which I do not want to do, as I prefer using NOD32.

Has anyone else had a issue like this one and figure out a fix yet?

FYI: I have also tweaked with GMail IMAP settings within Gmail Settings.

I installed Thunderbird email client for my gmail account.

When I started to add account I found one options specially for Gmail. Wow! Nice, I thought I proceeded. It was simple and it started to work. Thunderbird was using POP this way.

Next when I checked Google's directions for adding account to Thunderbird, they tell to use IMAP. Completely different procedure.

Should I use IMAP or POP? Why does Google gives directions to use IMAP for Thunderbird but POP for rest like Outlook, Outlook Express and Eudora?

Please someone explain. Thanks in advance

Hello Romeo29,

You can use POP or IMAP for either one. Here is the difference. With IMAP mail, when messages are downloaded to your e-mail client's Inbox, they also remain on the server. In other words, if you shut off your computer, went to the library, and opened your g-mail account in webmail, you would see all your messages that were previously downloaded to your inbox at home.

Now, let's say that you decided, while on web-mail, to delete some of those messages in the inbox. When you go back home, open your e-mail client, the client will reload the messages from the inbox, but the ones you deleted from the inbox while on the webmail interface will now be gone from the inbox in Thunderbird as well.

Now, if you are using POP, the messages downloaded to your Inbox will no longer be in the Inbox on the webmail interface. Now here is what is rather interesting with g-mail in contrast to some other e-mail providers. All messages that were downloaded to your computer you can still find in the trash box on g-mail's webmail interface. With other e-mail providers, those messages would no longer be on the server at all.

Going back to I-MAP. If you are using an e-mail client, if you move messages from your inbox to local folders, with most e-mail providers, those messages would now be gone from the provider's servers. With g-mail, those messages will appear in Trash. If you move messages to folders you create under the e-mail account, those messages will then appear in ... Read more

I am running Windows XP, and have Thunderbird running. I was using it to send/receive Gmail.

When I turned my computer on today, I found that Thunderbird had lost the details of the Gmail account. So I set up a new account using my old account details, and it managed to find the file folders for my emails stored on my computer.

Although I can send emalis, I cannot receive them, it keeps returning a 'timeout' error when I try to access Gmail.

Accessing Gmail is no problem however through the web interface.

I have set up the incoming server as pop.gmail.com

I dont have ssl but I was told to set it up as TLS Port 110.

Any thoughts on whats going on?

Check your settings. Look at them carefully. Sometimes a simple spelling mistake or a , instead of a . or even the spacing will throw everything off kilter. I once spent an hour on Outlook Express trying to figure out why it wasn't working. Problem turned out to be .ocm instead of .comHere is a link to setting up gmail on Thunderbird:http://email.about.com/od/mozillathunderbi...qt/et121604.htm

Hi - First, I would like to send you a tiny donation - tiny only because of bank account - tiny is OK?

Husband's computer: a new one is about to be unpacked. Right now: I gave him gmail, and he is getting messages there, and can send from there. He also is getting messages in thunderbird, but not the same ones that are coming to gmail. And he cannot send from Thunderbird. He seems to get 3 or 4 messages in Thunderbird, and then the bulk of his email in gmail. What I want: for him to get all his messages in gmail, and for him to temporarily be able to send from Thunderbird. As soon as the new computer goes on line (little pun there) Thunderbird will be a thing of the past. But right now, can you help?

Thanks so much.

I'm posting this here because I think this is a security issue.

I decided to archive all my Gmail messages by downloading them to my computer via Thunderbird. However, after I installed the program and entered in my account information (it even seemed to auto configure properly), the message I get is ?Configuration could not be verified ? in the username or password wrong?? I found some information that, with changes to Gmail, only a specific version of Thunderbird going forward would work. I downloaded the latest one. When looking into Google security, there is a new permission page setup that you have to give permission to Android apps so that they can be allowed to access your account information. However, I don?t know how to give Thunderbird permission.

Is there a way to give Thunderbird permission to access your Gmail?
