Thinkpad T470 No power or charge

Q: Thinkpad T470 No power or charge

I bought a Lenovo T470 a couple years back with Win 10 for school and its been working great with absolutley no problems. Then last night i get home from work and go on to do school work and a message pops up saying battery not charging. It has the icon showing it recognizes that the charger is plugged in. Also the light on the lenovo logo is blinking 3 times red and repeating. When i unplug the charger it stops blinking. So I thought it was the charger, got out my multimeter and check it and it reads normal on both sides of the charger. Then I thought i needed a new battery but it wont even stay powered on with the power cord plugged in. So now it is dead and even with the charger plugged in will not turn on. Not even the power button light will illuminate. This laptop has been great to me and this happened out of the blue im hoping there is a way to fix this problem. And I also tried taking battery, unplugging it, hold power button for a reset. Nothing changed. Anybody have any ideas?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi there, I'm using a Thinkpad T470. The detachable battery of my device is not charging anymore. In the battery overview, it shows 0 % charge while the main battery is fully charged. This leads to a total charge of 60%. Also, the battery light next to where the ac cable is plugged in does not light up when the device has reached 60% charge. My OS is ubuntu 18.04. Any help is highly appreciated! Kind regards,Simon

Hello everyone,  Trying to purchase an extra charger for the Lenovo Thinkpad T470 (which was bought in the US) and would love to know which one I can order locally, from Lenovo India.  These are the chargers are available and I can either buy an USB type C charger or the slimport charger, right?  https://www.lenovo.com/in/en/accessories-and-monitors/chargers-and-batteries/chargers/Lenovo-45W-AC-...https://www.lenovo.com/in/en/accessories-and-monitors/chargers-and-batteries/chargers/Lenovo-65W-AC-...https://www.lenovo.com/in/en/accessories-and-monitors/chargers-and-batteries/chargers/PWR-ADP-BO-USB... This is the one that came with the laptop (USB type C):   Would be great if you could please suggest what would be a good buy for this laptop or if it's better to buy a charger from Lenovo USA.  Thank you for  your time.

A:Recommended power adapter/charger for Lenovo Thinkpad T470

I would buy the USB-C, thinking if or when I replace the laptop, the USB-C charger is more likely to work as a spare.  As far as wattage, the 45W will be lighter, but 65W may charge some devices faster and is more likely to be compatible with any replacement.  (I am not suggesting that you are going to replace the laptop soon, but things happen and situations change.)

Hey everyone. As the headline says, I have a ThinkPad 90W Pro Dock and a ThinkPad T470 laptop with the following specs:i5 CPU8GB of RAMWindows 10I'd like to buy three identical monitors - nothing fancy, something between 27" and 32", sub-4k resolution, intended for corporate office use exclusively - and connect them for a cohesive screen experience. Ideally, connect everything via digital connections so there are zero/minimal differences in resolution and image quality on each monitor. Is this possible? First off, can my laptop/dock even run three external monitors? There was some conflicting information online. If it can, am I limited to 1 analog (VGA) and 2 digital (DVI and DisplayPort) outputs as a result of the port options on the dock, or is there some workaround for that? Could I upgrade to the ThinkPad 90W Ultra Dock which has 1 HDMI and 2 DisplayPorts as a possible solution? Would really appreciate anyone's input. And if anyone has a recommended monitor that would fit my needs, I'd love to hear your suggestion

I contacted Lenovol support and they send me a replacement unit. The the replacement unit has the same problem. Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 docking station does not charge Thinkpad P51 battery.  I need to plug in the power adapter for both docking station and notebook.  Does anybody have similiar problem?

A:Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 docking station does not charge Thinkpad P51 battery.

Everbody's p51 would be the same.  The thunderbolt port won't work as a charging port.  The thunderbolt specs specify 100w max.  That's not enough.  Your thunderbolt port is not for charging.  To charge via the dock, you need a workstation dock, not a thunderbolt dock.  A thinderbolt dock can charge things like an x1 carbon (5th gen) or x1 yoga (2nd gen)

No, it is not possible to charge either system through the USB-C port. You must use the supplied PSU for the laptop via the slim power port.

Hi , I have been using Thinkpads for 7 years , first time I'm facing a wired issue with T470.  The TP is not getting charged untill its fully discharged.  I tried different adaptors , but no use. I'm using Win10 Enterprise version.  Once its fully discharged and plugged in to the power socket, TP starts getting charge.  while its getting charged if we turn off/on the power, its acting accordingly. But, Once the battery fully charged and disconnected from power over the night, if you try plug in the mornig --> boom , its not getting charged.  Please help me fixing the issue.  Thanks,

A:ThinkPad T470 - not getting charged

Did you initiate the battery gauge reset procedure  in Lenovo vantage  and later aborted the procedure somehow? It seems like system is stuck in the 2nd step of the battery gauge reset program.Check the  battery charge thresholds  using lenovo vantage.  Maybe try to disable thresholds for all batteries.   If this did not help, then try this solution from another thread, ( yes it's another issue, but this could address this issue too).

The trackpad is working very good with the buttons of the touchpad. I found that if i will go to device manager and i will delete/unistall the touchpad (synaptics pointing device) then the mouse is working perfectly until the next reboot, when will be automatically installed the latest driver from windows or from update manager of lenovo, so i think that is not hardware problem. I have the latest original drivers on the pc, installed from the site of lenovo. Hi there, I was wondering whether I could replace my Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 8265 on my T470 with another WIFI adapter. I have heard that there is a whitelist on the adapters that can be used. Some say newer models don't have it but I'm not sure, and I wouldn't want to buy a WIFI card just for it not to work.I was looking forward to a BCM94352Z. Would that be compatible? Sould it be an m.2 half size PCIe card? Thanks in advance for the feedback.

A:Need Advice on Upgrading RAM on Thinkpad T470

Hello and welcome,

I've moved your post to the T-series forum.

Your subject says T470 but the message body says - and implies - T470s.  I think you already know that one module is soldered and one socketed, but just checking...

Both base specs say "2400MHz DDR4".  I'd be inclined to go to a reputable vendor's site (Crucial for instance - not pushing them...)  and use their memory finder for specifics.  In the hopefully unlikely event of compatibility issues you'd have that to fall back on for a return.

Probably not necessary, but it's not a bad idea to pull the specs of the soldered module and try to match those exactly.

Z.

A:Need Advice on Upgrading RAM on Thinkpad T470

Hi Loungepuppy,Warm Greetings & welcome to Lenovo Community, happy to have you here.

It depends upon your requirement ideally you will need a same kind (like frequency, type, size) of RAM in both slots to achieve a dual channel configuration.
Therefore, you can either install an 8GB stick to the existing configuration or go ahead with even 16GB stick aswell.

Edit- This system does support 32GB max 2400MHz DDR4 (source)

I hope the above information helped you.
Please feel free to post in Lenovo Community Forums if you have any further queries!

Is it normal for a Thinkpad T470 to drain battery after it has been shut down completely? I first observed this after not using the notebook for about a week. After switching it back on, the external battery had lost more than 10% charge, while the internal battery's value hadn't changed. Curiously, while using the notebook, this behavior is reversed, i.e. the internal battery is discharged first. Things I tried so far: Disabled Wake-on-LANDisabled USB chargeDisabled Thunderbolt deviceDisabled the fingerprint readerDisabled Fast BootDisabled all wake events and timersChanged power planPerformed a full shutdown via shutdown -sUpdated BIOS and Embedded Controller to latest version availableResetting Windows to factory defaults I also ejected the external battery and disabled the internal battery before shutting down to make sure that they don't discharge by themselves. However, no drain occurred under this condition. Effectively, none of these options have helped. The external battery still loses approximately 2% charge every 24 hours.

Hi all, I work IT for a US HQ company and we have a user in our smaller London office who has a T470 and he is trying to connect 2 external displays to it.  Both displays are Dell P2210 https://noteboox.de/mediafiles/Sonstiges/Dell-Professional-P2210-Users-Guide.pdf which have 1 VGA, 1 DVI-D and one DIsplayPort. We don't have any T470's here in US that I can test to replicate his issue on. The T470 has an HDMI port and a USB-C port. He currently has one of the monitors successfully connected via a HDMI(male) to VGA(F) adapter. When he tries to connect his 2nd monitor via the USB-C the PC will not detect it. He is using a USB-C to DIsplayPort cable  USB Type C(Thunderbolt 3) to DisplayPort [email protected] UHD 6 Feet CableFrom all I have read on this machine, it should be able to use the USB-C and HDMI port at the same time for video. I don't want to just tell him to go get a different cable, as I'm not sure if there's something I'm missing here. The T470 does support video over USB-C am I correct? All the specs sheet says on the 470 is "Lenovo USB-C to VGA adapter, optional." This is not very helpful and does not specify if it will support video over other means, nor if this "Lenovo adapter" is a converter or simply an adapter.  Can someone please help me pinpoint where my issue might be? Thanks.

That depends.  Are we spending your money or mine?

Given your use case I'd probably use the extra $ to go with a 500GB 2.5" SSD.  Then again, I'm a spec snob and might not be able to resist the NVMe drive.

As you've already figured out, the 470 only uses 2 PCIe lanes so that limits the NVMe SSD to something like 1700MB/sec.  The SATA unit would be more like 500MB/sec or so.  In practice, you'd probably never notice a difference.

FWIW,
Z.
