I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hi, about 2 days ago I turned on my pc and many weird things started happening...
first it took a lot of time for the explorer.exe to load, so the desktop or taskbar didn't appear until after maybe 10-15 minutes. Then, the taskbar looked really weird, it seemed like it had been cut horizontally, so you couldn't get to see the whole lower part of the taskbar (and it wasn't the screen size config... since I tried changing that and it didn't work). I thought it might be some kind of virus, so I opened Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and I got the following message:

A:Explorer Error Report Problems

Try running System File Checker. Have your XP CD ready if you have one, because it will check and replace any corrupted files. Go to your Start button, then Run and type in

cmd

and hit enter. Then, in the DOS emulator that pops up, type

sfc /scannow

and hit enter.

The System File Checker will scan for corrupted files and replace them from the CD if necessary.

This is my first post to this forum and I hope someone can help. I routinely scan my computer with Windows Defender, PCTools Threatfire and AdAware. But with 2 teenage kids who knows what gets in under the scanning.

My present concerns show up in four main ways.

1). Almost always when I do a "Search" for a file and sometimes when I move files, I get the typical following error: "Explorer.exe has encountered a problem and must close...."

2). Often the computer on boot up will stop after loading the wallpaper and will fail to load the desktop icons, taskbar, Start button, etc.

3). Sometimes when the desktop fully loads, I cannot launch a program. I will click on an icon and I get an "hourglass". The program never loads.

4). Finally sometime the computer will stall on shutdown, usually on "Saving your settings".

I don't know if these are all related or are separate causes. I want to rule out spyware or malware as I have not been able to trace the problems to any specific program or event.

I have attached Attach.zip and Ark.zip and have provided the contents of my DDS.txt file below as requested.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Hi,

Could someone please help.

A month back I got a few viruses and this forum was very helpful in getting rid of the virus. However I think a few other problems are still occurring.

Basically the computer is not functioning.

Once logged on various message alerts appear, which stop me from accessing any programs and files. In Safe Mode I can view some things but Normal Mode nothing works.

The error messages are as follows

lefwzd has caused an error in lefwzd

WBHOOK32.DLL Helpctr will now close

WBHOOK32.DLL Explorer will now close

Explorer has caused an error in (unknown) Explorer will now close.

I have tried various solutions but to no avail. I have tried System Retore. But I don't want to lose any files on the Hard Drive, and I've been unable to complete a successful backup of my files, it stops mid way with an error message.

I have now loaded Windows XP onto the computer running separately from the corrupt Windows ME. Is this bad for the computer. XP is running fine.

Is there anyway of transferring the files across the two operating systems?

Or is my only solution to fix ME.

thanks

DrDrew.

A:Major Problems with Explorer error

Go to the Anti-Spyware Section run the programs there to make sure there is no spyware. Post the HijackThis log file here for us to review.

Is XP on a separate hard drive? If it is, you could transfer the files over. Using System Restore will not delete your data. They should all still be intact. You may try that or just post a HijackThis log file after running the other programs.

This is a weird issue that needs to get fixed. We have 2 accounts on our computer. We have Internet Explorer and Firefox installed. Internet explorer works perfectly on my account but on my moms account - when she tries to go to any website it says:

On my account when I open firefox I get this message before it opens:

Could not initialize the application's security component. The most likely cause is problems with files in your application's profile directory. Please check that this directory has no read/write restrictions and your hard disk is not full or close to full. It is recommended that you exit the application and fix the problem. If you continue to use this session, you might see incorrect application behaviour when accessing security features.

We need help! We do not wish to pay for Tech Support as I am good at fixing stuff that happens to our computer. If you could help me with this issue that would be great! I have an XP desktop that suddenly froze, and upon rebooting twice (it wouldn't get to a login screen the first time for some reason), started presenting me with the network administrator-style login box instead of the standard XP Home login that I'm used to (but no Domain option like I see on my computer at work, just username/password).  My password would not work (gave me the standard message about passwords needing to be checked), but if I entered NO password, it would appear to log on, bring up my desktop background . . . and then give me this dialog:

Explorer.EXE - Application Error
The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000006). Click on OK to terminate the application.

Clicking OK leaves me with a blank desktop.  At this point the only thing I can do is bring up Task Manager with Ctrl+Alt+Del.  I don't see anything suspicious in the running processes, but the moment I move to the File menu to try and start up a new process, the manager freezes.  (I can eventually get it to close and open a fresh one, but clearly there is no way to get explorer.exe to work--or even a terminal window.)

I'm unable to run any program inside that machine, but since it's sitting right next to this one, I can read and type in the list of running processes along with the username associated with them and the memory usage (CPU is negligible--all processes are 0% except for System Idle Process at 99%):

Hi,
This is my first post here, so I hope that I follow all of the rules. And thanks in advance for any help. My computer has been running slow for a while, and I think one of my kids might have gone to a website that allowed some malware in. My OS is Windows XP SP3. I have noticed a few things, 1. Had a problem with Adobe acrobat reader, it wouldn't update for some reason, and couldn't open PDF files for a while, after uninstalling and reinstalling several times, I think it is now working. Also noticed more recently when working in MS Word 03 every once in a while it won't let me save files. Now I am noticing that when I have Internet Explorer open for a while, IE tries to pop open a new window, to which the IP address is blocked by K9 web protection 91.212.226.6 is the IP. After googling this IP address, I found a few posts leading me to think there might be a trojan kicking around on my pc. I have run MBAM and Hijackthis in an attempt to find the culprit, but MBAM comes up clean, and I can't find it on Hijackthis. Any help woould be appreciated.
Thanks!

Hi there,

I'm using Windows 98 and the most current version of Internet Explorer. Quite frequently, it would take minutes to browse from one page to another or at other times, I would just get a "Page Cannot Be Displayed" error. Also sometimes I have troubles with the vertical scrollbar.

Is it possible to uninstall Internet Explorer? If so, how? I've already tried to "repair" it, but it doesn't work nor does reinstalling. Would it be okay to install an older version over the current version?

I've already established with my Internet service provider that it's an issue with Internet Explorer, not my actual connection. I've tried so many different things in an attempt to fix this problem and now I'm looking for new ideas. Any help would be much appreciated.

I've tried doing the steps outlined int his article: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=241344 but I'm not sure how to go about Step 9 and onwards.

You can try dial-a-fix. Its magical for this kind of problems. Dial-a-fix will put many of your registry entries to Windows default state. You need admin rights for it.

http://wiki.djlizard.net/Dial-a-fix

Read carefully first, then download and run it ONLY if you understand clearly what would it do and if you can take all the previous actions suggested.

Good luck!

Hey I've been having major problems with my Laptop.
Every ten or so minutes when my McAfee 2010 security suite disables real-time scanning it'll re-enable itself causing a lot of alarming pop-up boxes which is slowing my computer. Not sure whats causing it but it seems like malware.
Next theres this process which starts at windows start-up (DivxUpdate.exe), I don't think this is actually a part of divx. I've read somewhere that it is a form of autorun malware, it consumes 99% of my cpu majorly slowing down my computer, I think I may have similar malware on here that are problematic.
Also my firefox frequently say that there's an unresponsive script which temporarily freezes my whole computer and when I finally manage to get to task manager I have to end the process which seems to be using a regular amount of cpu and memory.

Hi, I hope you can help me, i'm having a bit of a problem and i'm too scared to fiddle around trying to do things myself, I have the feeling i'd just mess it up

I've literally just started having problems with my computer. Sporadically I have lost the ability to right-click, sometimes whenever I do so on either a folder or on an application, no little menu comes up (i'm sounding like a right expert here!).

Also, when browsing through folders, the loading starts to become very slow and sometimes the blue menu at the side of the window isn't there at all. When I click on images to preview, or folders to open, sometimes nothing happens at all and the window just remains the same.

ALSO whilst trying to open some applications I get the error pop-up sound, but no error message box comes up to tell me what the error is. It just makes the noise, and I close the half-loaded application without it crashing (This happened with Photoshop, Adaware, Outlook Express, and once with Sonic RecordNow - all started loading, the error noise was heard, and the program left half loaded or missing parts) I've tried again and it seems it's all hit and miss like the other symptoms...sometimes i'll be able to right-click normally, sometimes i'll be able to browse files normally, sometimes programs will load, but the problem still (at random moments, it seems) arises again.

When Alt Ctrl Delete -ing, either nothing comes up and an error noise is ... Read more

I've never posted on a help forum before, so please bear with me.

I have a Dell Studio 1749 laptop, running Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit.

Windows Explorer is not working. That is, Windows Explorer, not Internet Explorer. It seemed like every forum I already checked this confused people. The only way I am able to communicate with you fine folks is to manually run Firefox using the Task Manager interface. Here are the things I have tried, and the things that I am incapable of trying, and why:

1.) I tried booting in safe mode. Windows Explorer still would not work.

2.) I tried booting with only the bare necessities through System Configuration (msconfig) by selecting Diagnostic Startup, but the problem still occurred when I would boot to my desktop.

3.) I tried doing a system restore to 3 days ago, before the problem ever occurred, but it simply didn't seem to take, as some software I installed just last night was still here when it booted. That was a weird one.

4.) I tried rebooting with a chkdsk /r, but I could not get this to work because in order to set that up, you need to be able to run the command prompt with administrative privileges, which I cannot because Windows Explorer is not working. (I feel that maybe there is some secret way to do a chkdsk without needing the command prompt, but I couldn't find instructions anywhere.)

5.) I tried uninstalling the software that I believe to be the culprit, which happens to be Skype. Last night I received some pictu... Read more

Ok I am sorry I posted this in the wrong spot first off. I sent it to the wrong space

So my problem is when I use IE or MSN explorer I can't click and go anywhere Like in Pogo I can get IN pogo but not to individual games or rooms. In MSN groups I can get in most groups but I can't post any reply or new discussion. When I click on a link or a button it just sits there and goes no where.

My word pad is now missing

I can't turn my computer ON after turning it off for even a second without using a hair dryer on the back of it for SEVERAL minutes

I cannot acces system restore. It is just a blank white page
I run Windows XP (Dell Dimensions 4550)

I have done hijack this so many times I can't count. I've done killbox, I've run my ad/spyware scans, I've done registry repair, I've done registy first aid I have done my virus scans too

I tried to uninstall and reinstall my IE and and MSN explorer and I don't think it even UNinstalled. I reinstalled using a disc I got with my computer but it didn't do anything different. Still acted the same. This started about a week and a half ago. I have emptied my prefetch, my temp folders and my cache thingie. No change tho.
Hopefully someone can help?

Hello. First off I will not be able to access safe mode, as I do not have the password needed for it.

For my problems, when I first notied them, windows explorer had crashed, and I lost teh taskbar, and all Icons, although programs still worked, and could be started via task viewer. Using that to try to restart explorer wouldn't work. I then restarted the comuter, and explorer caused a message box to pop up saying that it had caused errors and neded to be shut down. In addition, whenever I try to run internet explorer, it brings up an error message saying that it will be shut down and asks for an error message to be sent. If you elect to restart it afterwards, it always brings up the same error, although if you ignore this, you can continue like normal. I fiddled around and got explorer.exe to run, but it would crash as soon as you tried to use it, so while I had it up, I used processexploer to track doen its threads, and I found one that was attatched to qanqdo.dll, and it was using most of the processing used by explorer.exe. I used process explorer to kill that thread, and after that, explorer seemed to work, until after a computer restart. After I got it to work, I ran Hijack this, which for some reason wouldn't let me save a log, so I had to write the lines that looked suspicious. Here they are:

O20 - AppInit _DLLs:qanqdo.dll

I also went through and by hand deleted this Facegame file set, and can no longer find it, although it still has an entry in Hijack th... Read more

Hi This is my first time posting, and I have a lot of things causing problems with my computer, but to start off, here are my specs.

Windows 10 Pro
Intel Core i7-4770s CPU @ 3.10GHz
8 Gb Ram Corsaire Vengence 4x2
64 Bit
AMD Radeon HD 7700 GDDR5 1Gb (two of them w/ crossfire)
2 Tb 7200 Rpm Seagate HDD
z87-g45 Gaming Motherboard
Case: r5 Gaming Full size case
Power Supply: Corsair AX860
Fans: Rosewill Hyper Silence CPU fan, 2 stock front fans, 1 stock in back

So, to start off, I built this computer myself 2 years ago, and it has been running steadily without too many problems along the way, but earlier last year it began to have some much bigger problems.

Issue 1. Monitor Issues
I say this is a monitor issue, but i really doubt it has anything to do with the monitors them selves. What is happening every once in a while (about 3 times a week) the screens of my monitors will cut to black (it doesn't matter what I'm doing) and stay black for a few seconds before revealing the task bar at the bottom of the screen, and then the rest of my desktop slowly reveals itself. I've tried updating my video card drivers, but that hasn't helped.

Issue 2. Keyboard and Mouse Become unresponsive (System isn't frozen however)
Sometimes if I leave my pc idling in the lock screen, the keyboard will stop working, and when I come back, I can't log in. I can tell my computer is not frozen because the slideshow in the lock screen keeps moving and I can move my mouse (bu... Read more

Hi,

Whenever I open explorer (to access files) it starts slowing down, quite quickly - molases is the favorite term, I believe. It can get to the point that my computer becomes so irresponsive I have to shut it down using the power switch.

It task manager it shows that explorer uses 50% (or more) CPU and up to (and over) 100MB memory (I've seen it use more than a quarter G).

I've uninstalled AVG and installed a trial of NOD32, which discovered a trojan somewhere & deleted it (destroying all my history), but the problem persists.

(Also, when activating explorer or IE, there's a long, annoying wait until they 'appear'. This is a fast machine, in the beginning there was almost no wait at all before progs would load).

Here is my HT log:

Hello all! I am new to the forums and have a problem with my Windows XP Home. I have at Sony VAIO and the other day my internet was having problems. Something was wrong with the IP address or domain name and I had to call my internet provider and he solved that problem.

So, later that day I turned on my computer and my desktop had an error message. Something along the lines of "Activate active desktop" and it was a white screen with this writing on it and not my normal desktop. Also I found that my toolbar was disappearing and then reappearing. It was like my computer's applications were rebooting. Sometimes the toolbar would just disappear. So I googled the problem and it said to run explorer.exe under the task manager. This solves the problem for a hot second then goes back to the toolbar disappearing as well as the desktop. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong?

Also, when I try to go on the internet again, my screen says that same message saying something was wrong with my IP address or domain name? And it requires me to call my internet provider again. I am on my laptop which is connected wireless to my VAIO desktop. Something is wrong with the internet here too because I have to connect to the internet "manually". Normally this laptop just picks up the wireless service. Again, not sure what to do. Please help!

Whenever I try to run any explorer program, like search, or opening a folder (On my desk or the start menu), my computer slows down to point where the only thing I can do is close it through task manager.

This isn't the only problem. No media playing program works. iTunes started off with just freezing when I went to the music store, now it's whenever I turn it on. Anytime firefox is asked to play videos, it freezes up. Also, a couple months back my computer was completely crippled by what I assume was a virus causing a repeated opening of Dr. Watson. That's stopped, but I remember seeing drwtsn32.exe in the Task manager a couple days ago.

So, I ask people with experience, is this a virus? Something that I probably did wrong? And more importantly, is there anything I can do about it?

You might want to download and run HijackThis. Save the .exe to "C:\Program Files\Hijack This. Then run a scan and save a log file, copy and paste the log in the Security Forum.

I'm running 8.1 (upgraded from 8.0) on an Alien laptop. I've had lots of problems such as this latest one: some files or folders will not show properties when I use a right click in explorer. Some do, most don't. Other symptoms: sometimes I get the explorer.exe error message "unknown hard error" on startup. Also, sometimes the desktop icons aren't all there. These problems all go away when I boot into safe mode.

Things I've tried that don't work:

1) sfc /scannow runs but says there are some corrupted files it can't fix.

2) I've used system restore to go to the earliest version available

3) I've uninstalled recently installed software.

4) System repair says it can't repair the system

5) I've cleared out Temp folders in Appdata

6) I've run Malwarebytes and Hitman Pro to remove any malware.

I'd like some suggestions for fixing this that *don't* involve reinstalling the system. I'm pretty tired of doing that and am almost ready to go back to Windows 7.

Thanks for your help.

Problems with Explorer right click are often caused by a bad shell extension. The basic strategy is use ShellExView to disable one at a time to see if all of a sudden the bug is gone. See this thread: Right Click Menu Lag on my pc

But a search of ShellExView may bring up others also.
