IE11 resets local intranet registry keys on launch

Q: IE11 resets local intranet registry keys on launch

We have deployed IE11 via IEAK and have a proxy set which currently set to return direct for all sites. This means IE is seeing all external sites in the intranet zone due to the setting 'include all sites that bypass the proxy server' being enabled. If
I manually untick this then everything works as all external sites are in the internet zone and the setting is permanent.
However, I need to deploy this setting site wide and the group policy "Windows Components/Internet Explorer/Internet Control Panel/Security Page - Intranet Sites: Include all sites that bypass the proxy server" (both computer and user) set to disable
only greys out the box unticked but does not actually move external sites into the internet zone.
I've tried using GPP to delete the registry key HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ZoneMap\Proxybypass which does work but as soon as I re-launch IE the setting is written back with the value 1 and it is back in the wrong state
Using process monitor I can see it is iexplore.exe that sets this key back to 1 on launch and when I manually untick the box all it does it delete the Proxybypass key and nothing else. Has anyone seen this before and managed to work around it? It seems
very similar to

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

When dealing with a Malware infested PC, you may have to prune several registry entries manually in case the cleanup tool you use does not remove all of them. In most cases, you would get an error ("Error Deleting Key") stating that you don?t have permissions to delete the specified branch. So, additional steps are required to reset the registry ACL Permissions first, before deleting the key. RegASSASSIN from MalwareBytes makes it very easy to reset the ACLs and delete the keys. Whew! You don?t have to perform half a dozen steps to reset the permissions for each key.

Editor?s NoteThis tool does not substitute for anti-malware / anti-virus software. All this tool does is to reset the permissions for the specified registry key and delete it.This tool needs to be run as administrator (elevated) in Windows Vista & Windows 7. To do so, right-click on the RegASSASSIN executable, and choose Run as Administrator option in the context menu.Complex Malware removal is to be performed by trained personnel, as they?re capable of doing a surgical cleanup without affecting other components of the Operating System. I have 7 email accounts on our Exchange server for different business and personal roles.  I have always used OWA instead of Outlook to segregate accounts on my desktop.  For quick logins I have been using "Keyboard Express"
Macro program  to insert USER and PASSWORD into OWA.   With some update applied in December 2015, Keyboard Express no long works on most of my Macro hotkeys because the IE hotkeys have taken precedence.  Such as ALT-H and other.
This same think happened to IE11 when I ran the Windows 10 upgrade 2 months ago, so I restored Win7 with a disk image to get rid of Window 10.
Is there a way to assign precedence between a Macro Program and IE11 Hotkeys ?

I am running IE 11 on a Windows 2008 R2 SP1 server, which is part of a domain.

When accessing sites from the internal network, I get a blank page. I noticed that it was due to the fact that these sites are not in the "Local intranet" zone, and when I add them manually it works.

In Internet Options > Security > Local intranet, when I click on "Sites", I directly have the window with the advanced configuration, where I have to manually define a list of websites. I do not see the window
with the "Automatically detect intranet network" checkbox (but I have it on other servers).

If I manually add the IP and domain with wildcards, I can access my internal sites, but I would have to do that for every user connecting to the server. I'd prefer if it was automatic, as it is on other servers.

Can you help me please ?

I'm currently have the issue, that mainly PDF files are handled different ways on each website.

First example: I open a PDF file in our document management system (Intranet), I only can choose to save
the file. If I open the catering menu pdf (Intranet), it opens directly in the IE11.
Seconde example: I search google for any PDF (i.e.
http://www.orimi.com/pdf-test.pdf), it opens within the IE11.
If I open Outlook Webaccess, I only can download the file.
In the past with IE 10, I have been asked to open or to save the file.

Any idea what happened here? IE 11 is configured through GPO.

Thank you for your help!

Hi. I've been having issues with popups and performance lately and my AVG and MBAM scans weren't finding anything so I tried booting into safe mode and scanning that way. Much to my dismay I found that in the middle of loading the partitions the computer would reset and I would get a black screen telling me that safe mode failed to boot and that I should try loading windows normally.

I opened up my regedit and low and behold, the SAFEBOOT subfolder is missing entirely. I'm not really comfortable poking around in the registry, the only experience I have with it is looking around. I really kinda need to have safe mode, but my computer didn't come with a cd that I've seen mention of for fixing this kind of thing. Is there a way I can just manually restore the missing registry keys by typing in the necessary information?

In addition, I noticed a few keys which don't seem like they are supposed to be there, I searched them in search engines but with no results. I've included the key and the information that comes up on the little side-panel when I click on the key in question.

We have an odd issue. IE11 is running all sites in compatibility mode. This appears to be because it is treating all sites as being in the Intranet Zone. This is:
a) breaks many websites that require modern browsers
b) is a huge security issue as many protections are disabled by default on the intranet zone.

Has anyone else seen this or have ideas on what we can do to solve it.

I will add that we have autodetect proxy settings enabled, and wpad hosts a proxy.pac that instructs browsers to go direct to all websites.

Now, I understand that there is a strong likelihood this can't be done Ė firing .exe or .bat files from within an html page is obviously something that is typically frowned-upon, and for good reason (viruses and other malware would love this kind of functionality). That said, Iím trying to find a solution to a problemÖ

Iíve created a webpage for my companyís intranet which displays the status (i.e. in-use/not-in-use) of four server PCs which staff members can log onto remotely should they need a little more oomph than their desktop machines can provide.

Iíve now been asked to include a link/button on the page to allow users to directly remote log onto servers which are not in-use from the ďserver-statusĒ web page. It seems a little lazy to me as itís really not that hard to click START and type mstsc, but who am I to complain?

Iíve therefore been trying to get my html code to launch C:\WINDOWS\system32\mstsc.exe upon the click of a button, but having searched the web, Iíve not managed to find anything that works. (I did find lots of references to some javascript code which purportedly does this, but it didnít seem to work for me.)

Iíve also tried creating a .bat file which launches mstsc Ė double-clicking on the file itself fires-up the remote desktop client nicely, but I cannot get it to launch from my webpage Ė understandably IE appears just as jittery about launching .bat files as it is launching .exe files!

As mentioned earlier, I suspect that thi... Read more

Just wondering if anyone else has had this problem. I run Vista Ultimate x64 with Sp2 and IE 8 installed with an ethernet wired BT Broadband connection in UK. Past couple of week, my connections completely gone to dross - have to reboot ADSL modem constantly and BT tell me there's nothing wrong on their end, it's in my PC.
I have just noticed that in the Tools/ Internet Options/ Security/ Local Intranet that i'm set to custom and no matter how many times i try and reset & apply, it will not change from custom!

Anyone any idea if it's something to worry about or maybe a glitch in my build/ updated IE? Looked on Google but nothing there.

A:IE8 Local Intranet can't turn off Custom!

mine is set to custom as well....no problems with IE 8. check your mac address on your routers web based page. if it's unchecked, check it and then clone it and save settings then reboot and see if that doesn't fix it.

I am attempting to use the PowerShell Start-Process cmdlet to run a BAT file on my local network, and in testing on my Windows 7 Home machine with a NAS as the "server" I am getting a Security Warning about running the BAT. The entire purpose
is to automate specific admin tasks, so this kind of defeats the purpose. I have ensured that the NAS is added to Local Intranet, and I have also tried setting security to consider all UNC paths as Local Intranet. Neither seems to solve the problem.
So, my first question is, is there a way to address this on Windows 7 Home, so I can test things properly. And will I have similar issues when I go to implement this on Windows 7 Pro and above in domain environments?

WS2012 Remote Desktop Session Host. We need to run a couple LOB programs from a remote share, and I want to suppress the security prompt. The usual solution is add the domain to Local Intranet Zone.
I can add domain servers to Local Intranet Zone by using "file://ServerName" syntax and it works. In a normal DomainName.Local domain, I can add "DomainName.Local" to the Local Intranet Zone and it works.
I haven't found a syntax that works for "SingleLabelDomain". I've tried

--and I either get an "Invalid format" message, or it accepts it but doesn't work.
Is there a correct way to enter this, or am I SOL with a single-label domain?

I'm currently in the process of testing/deploying IE11 in our environment and I've begun testing on the IE11 Enterprise Site List manager.
I've read that there are a few different ways to configure the XML file to apply via GPO per the article below.  HTTP, Local Network, Local File. (https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/Dn640699.aspx)
In my isolated testing I've chosen to use the local file method which is very easy to setup and use on a testing machine.
It looks like we have the flexibility to choose how we apply the XML file, and I was curious what the best options are and why?  Also are there examples of each setup being used and the benefits/downsides to each?
Here's the options that I can see using:
1. HTTP - setup an IIS website to host the XML file.
2. Local Network (UNC) - setup a UNC path on our DFS where we store the current XML file and users would have read only access to that location.
3. Local File - We could just deploy the XML file via SCCM package/application when updates to the list are required.
Could anyone please point me towards some articles, etc, explaining the pro's and cons of these methods and why I might want to choose one over the other?  I'm leaning towards just using a DFS share and option #2 because it doesn't require us to maintain
an IIS site for it but I am curious to hear if there might be any downsides to this method, or benefits to going with another method.

(This was originally posted in the Windows 10 General forum and suggested by post here)
In our organization, we host a self serve printer driver installation, though an internal site. There are printer installation maps with  hyperlinks on a map of that particular office. It is done this way due to the large number of employees who travel
in between offices in that we don't want to deploy printers through GPOs.
This hyperlink consists of a simple .cmd file that initiates a connection to the UNC path of the server hosting that particular printer, there's around 75 print servers al in all.  When the end user would click on the printer hyperlink, they'd be prompted
to execute the .cmd file and it would initiate a printer connection and drivers would be installed.
There's a few of us on Windows 10 v1703 who are testing and we've run into an issue with executing the .cmd directly from our internal website with IE (we're not using Edge and all internal sites redirect to IE if opened in Edge).  The .cmd file looks
like it runs, but just does nothing and this has been re-confirmed working on v1607 and earlier versions of Windows.
Clients on v1703 now need to save out the .cmd file before executing, while this may not seem like a big deal, our user base is used to how printers are installed and have been done this way for many years.
I've tried changing the IE security settings for the 'local intranet' zone to it's lowest settings and enabled / disabled each ... Read more

Hi all, I was reading these 2 threads about people who have been having trouble deleting stubborn registry keys:

Unfortunately they were locked so I couldn?t post a reply.

I have tried everything previously, including all this permission stuff from over here: How do I remove a "Locked" Registry key? - Mischel Internet Security Forum just wasted a lot of time.

Also tried regdelnull RegDelNull also tried RegASSASSIN: Malwarebytes

Nothing worked.

So guys, after reading from over here Malwarebytes Forum > RegAssassin didn't work ?

Step 2. Then run the reset.cmd within it, allow it to complete may take around an hour or so.

NB: If you do not have below file of spupdsvc.exe then just do a normal restart and skip to step 5.

Step 3. Reboot your computer into Safe Mode (tap F8 at BIOS screen) then after it's loaded navigate to C:\Windows\System32\spupdsvc.exe

 Internet Explorer.
The issue happens once I install IE11 on that machine.  Once I install IE11 on that machine I wanted to go into group policy and enable enterprise mode for some testing purposes.  Once IE11 is installed if I do Start > Run > gpedit.msc I
Encountered an error while parsing:
Resource '$(string.BlockImmersiveBrowser)' reference in attribute displayName could not be found
File C:\Windows\PolicyDefinitions\inetres.admx, line 34666, column 250

Eventually the local GP will display after I click OK on the error above.  However, when I navigate to User Config > Admin Temp > Windows Components the Internet Explorer section is now gone.  I've done this on 3 separate boxes, all Windows
7 x64 going from IE9 to IE11 and they all exhibit this exact same issue.  Anyone have any ideas?

We are in testing phase for IE9 to IE11 migration in our environment.

On test system we found that on gpupdate the value of registry "AcceptLanguage" in
HKCU:\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\International becomes blank, and this is not acceptable since some of our applications are dependent on this valueEven if the entry is removed or set with a value, upon gpupdate the entry is reappearing with a blank value.
We have checked all linked GPOs for users & computers and scripts for any settings affecting this value and found noneThe registry was unaffected when the same computer had IE9 and group policy was refreshed
Any help would be greatly appreciated

A:IE11 - registry value for AcceptLanguage becomes blank

Thanks for your time Kate Li, due to policy restriction I'm unable to post logs here, however I was able to find the cause of this problem and here it is:
Within one of the Group Policy Preference, we created a new "Internet Settings for IE 10" for configuring the Home page, and few other settings, additionally we disabled all the other settings (F8 for Red).
We disabled all items with within the language preference dialog as well (there isn't any red dotted line on the list of languages), and this is the culprit, if you configure any of the settings here, there's no way you can disable configuration of the language
list (not atleast through the interface, but can with direct modification in the XML) and have opened a case with MS support

I like to leave my computer on while I'm away at work. I have it set up so that it doesn't go to sleep, but the monitor shuts off after a period of time. When I came home this evening, I noticed that my keyboard's alphanumeric keys only opened the calculator. Apostrophe opens Explorer. Numpad works, tab, shift, enter, caps lock, control, and alt all work. Arrow keys do nothing.

I'm a decently experienced desktop support technician and I know my way around driver settings. In the past few hours, I've reinstalled my device drivers I don't know how many times. Every keyboard I've tried on this machine repeats the above and when I try the keyboard on a separate machine (the laptop I'm using to post this thread), it works fine. The keyboard in question in is a Razor BlackWidow Ultimate Mac Version (I got it for Christmas from my girlfriend, I'm on a custom PC). I've also tried a generic logitech keyboard.

My cat likes to sit on my desk sometimes when I'm not paying attention, so I believe she hit some insane combination of letters to activate Calculator Domination Mode. If there is anyone on this forum that can offer me some insight, I would be absolutely delighted. Thanks for reading.

A:Keyboard alphanumeric keys only launch calculator.

Welcome to our forum BattleMage.

I don't know what caused your problem but the first thing I would try if it was my computer is a Restore Point before this problem happened.

Because you leave your computer on I suggest that you unplug your keyboard or just turn it over so the cat can't press buttons.

if I open IE on a 2016 server and add http://faketest to the intranet sites, it populates in the registry

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ZoneMap\EscDomains
same as it does on any previous OS.
but I have a GPO that pushes some stuff to that location (actually to both the Domains and EscDomains locations) with Preferences. the registry keys are all identical on my 2016, 2012 R2, 2008 R2 servers. the sites all work as expected
on 2012 and 2008, but on 2016, the sites do not appear in IE's Intranet Sites GUI and are not being treated as intranet sites.
I would guess that 2016 uses a different location, but my test of manually adding a site to the GUI intranet sites proves otherwise. what am I missing?

My P51 has the Lenovo Settings program installed. I also installed the Vantage program. When I press the f11 key, it still opens Settings, which informs me the program has merged with Vantage & a button to launch Vantage. How do I reconfigure the f11 button to launch Vantage directly? In general - how may I reconfigure any function key to do something different? For example, I have the media control buttons twice on the keyboard - f1-f4 plus again above the numeric keypad. I'd like to redefine one of those sets for other more useful (and non-redundant) functions. How may I do that? Thank you.

I'm trying to set up a desktop when any user opens IE11, both check marks would be enabled and set to compatibility mode.  Is there a way I can modify the registry file to ensure that the check marks are there?
Thank you,

We have IE11's Enterprise Mode enabled and working. I have been given two new URLs to add to the sitelist, but when I add them and apply to a test system, the value in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\EnterpriseMode\CurrentVersion
does not increment to the new version number; instead the value goes blank.
The format for the new URLs differs slightly from existing entries.
appname.domain.com - this is the format for existing entries and works
app.domain.com/apps/appname - this is the format for the new entries.  Adding either of the two new URLs that use this format causes the VersionNumber value to go blank.
Any ideas on why this would happen?  We are using the v.1 XML schema.
