Taskbar icons look bad with DPI settings changed

Q: Taskbar icons look bad with DPI settings changed

So I'm using a widescreen monitor now after years of a 4:3 one, I have it set to the recommended 1920x1080, and I have the DPI set to medium (125%) since without it everything is way too small for me.

It looks pretty alright for the most part, but taskbar icons, particulary the ones in the bottom right, some look extremely pixelled. I read somewhere that for whatever reason Windows 7 doesn't automatically choose a more appropriate icon size in this case and just goes for a 16x16 and lets the magnifier do the rest, resulting in it looking ugly.

Is there a way to force Windows to use one of the higher quality icons for the taskbar? I don't mind if it's a third party tweaking program as long as it does it.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Following a Skype update today, some of my desktop and taskbar (also Start Menu) icons immediately disappeared, only to be replaced with standard Windows icons. This involved mostly Microsoft and Adobe programs, including Outlook, Word, Adobe Reader and Adobe Acrobat, but also Google Earth and QuickTime Player.
I've carried out a Icon cache rebuild, but this has not restored the original icons, resulting instead in standard .exe icons or blank (i.e. white) icons.
When I try to change the icon for these programs, I generally get messages similar to this one (for Adobe Reader):
Windows cannot find file %SystemRoot%\Installer\{AC76BA86-7AD7-1033-7B44-AC0F074E4100}\SC_Reader.ico.

Does anyone know what to do? I've seen on the internet that various people have had the same problem, but I have yet to read a working solution. I'm considering a System Restore...

Hello, Would someone please be able to help me. I recently got my computer back after being repaired and it was on a small resoultion under the 1000's. I bought a new screen to go with it and just turned it on. I went to display settings and changed resoultion to 1920x1080 and now its just a big blank stretched wallpaper with no icons, task menu/bar or start menu. I also can't click or right click thus I have no way to change this back. I've tried going into normal safe mode and display settings changed it to the smallest, restarted the computer and its doing the exact same thing. I know no fixes and would really appreciate all the help I can get.

A:Changed Resoultion, Icons, Taskbar, Start menu All gone. Can't Click or right click

Follow the below steps:
Press CTRL+Alt+delete together and hit enter
Click on File and New Task (Run)
Type "Control" without any quotes. This will open control panel Window, from where you can easily get to display settings options and change your PC resolution back to it's initial state.

Good Luck.

My laptop battery ran out and it must have shut itself down. When I restarted the following symptoms appeared.

icons left of the clock disappeared
the taskbar changed from the standard task bar (green start button, blue bar) to a plain gray bar with a gray start button
if I right click on start > properties > taskbar tab > customize - the icons do not match up with the descriptions, for example the yahoo messenger icon has the description "wireless network connection"

My Computer:
If I click Start then right click mycomputer >properties I would expect to see a window with tabs "general, comp name, hardware.... etc" instead nothing appears

My network places > then View my network connections I would expect to see the network connections I have defined. its blank

I can't use my wireless connection because I can't see it to connect to. Other than that all programs seem to be working fine. I get to the internet using a hard LAN connection.

I don't even know where to start. I have read many of the posts regarding taskbar problems but none seem to fit. Any help greatly appreciated
System Information:
I just tried to open the system information icon in the control panel to get the info to put here but nothing happens when I double click it.
I am running XP SP3 I am current on updates, AVG Free (tried uninstalling just in case)

I have a pc with windows 7 home premium 64 bit. I have a problem with some icons on taskbar: sometimes some applications are displaying the wrong icons, sometimes, as you can see (screenshot), I don't see some icons: sometimes a few are missing (this time I have 8 icons of about 20!).

If I restart my pc, some icons return, but many still missing or are wrong!

So I launched this tool from microsof (I think it rebuilt icon cache, but I'm not sure): In Windows le icone vengono modificate in modo non corretto

Something has changed on my pc in the last few days and I have no idea what happened.

I have folders set up on the desktop

for example, i have a folder called MS Office

Within the folder are 4 icons for the programs (word, Excel, Powerpoint and Diagnostics)

The icons use to display as medium size - not there are appearing as details.

This has happened to every folder on the desktop. I can change them back to medium size icons, but they do not stay.

How do i fix this issue?

A:Icons have changed from medium sized icons to details

You could try resetting Explorer Folder View to default.
Then set it manually to what you want and see if it "sticks."

Edit: Note that the .reg file just deletes the "bags" Explorer uses to remember the settings. As the settings are set and changes the "bags" are reloaded. So it is not some vital Registry thing that can't be erased.

Edit2: Actually in this case it is not a .reg file but a .bat that uses registry editing commands via the command line. But it does delete the bags of folder view settings.

If you're still having trouble after installing iTunes again, download THIS.

Save the .reg file to your desktop. Double-click it to merge it to the registry.

If the fix only opens as a text file (in Notepad), right-click the file (before opening it) and select Open With > Choose Program... Then, select the Registry Editor.

This references: Quick Launch Bar: icons don't wrap even though there is room - a post by chillz which discovers a "bug" with the taskbar not resetting the row-sizing for toolbars when dragging the taskbar to the left then back to the bottom.

I, for a while now, have been using a custom quick-launch toolbar on my taskbar with the taskbar being 2 unit-lines in height and having the taskbar on my secondary ( left ) monitor. When I first set this up it showed 3 lines of small icons in the toolbar and up to 2 lines on the standard taskbar. This was perfect because the toolbar didn't reset the order every time I launched an application contrary to how the pinned application system works. With pinned applications, no matter what position I drop the icon, the order always resets and floats from place to place so that system of organizing icons is disgusting because you have apps between icons of apps that aren't running some times and other times the running applications are above and below with or without grouping enabled.

The vertical display would be the ideal way for me to view unlaunched applications ( see aforementioned topic ) because they group together and launched apps come after; in horizontal mode the taskbar is chaotic without a toolbar organizing the apps to one side but then you lose the functionality of the pinned-application system ( if you forfeit usage of that chaotic horizontal system in favor of how the vertical system works but in horizontal mod... Please try this workaround (you will need your Windows? XP SP2 CD).

(In the event that you do not have a Windows? XP CD with SP2, you will need to 'borrow' one from a friend or colleague, as the manufacturer's "Recovery Discs" will not work in this instance.)

Insert the Windows? XP CD in your drive. (Hold down the Shift Key to prevent it from starting.)

Go Start > Run ...in the box type in sfc /scannow …please take note of the space between the sfc and the /.

This is the System File Checker...it will scan all the Windows? core system files to ensure that they are in their respective correct places, and if not replace them from the CD.

During the scan you may be asked to Insert the CD, if this happens just go retry and let it do its thing.

One important point: While sfc is running, it is not advisable to do any other work, or have any browsers/programs running on the computer, until the scan is complete. (This process will generally take around 45-65 minutes to complete).

Once finished, remove the CD and reboot your machine...all should be "Normal" (hopefully)

I noticed the same problem. I think the solution is to make the shortcut read only before you pin it to the task bar. I did this a few days ago and they seem to be keeping my new icon.
If you later want to unpin the shortcut from the taskbar you will need to remove the readonly check from the taskbar shortcut properties. Although it will unpin without doing this you will be left with the shortcut in the real folder and have to go there to physically delete it.

My problem is specific to the unpinned icons in Windows 7 Home Edition 64-bit. The pinned applications stay put just fine. This problem started a couple of days ago.

It seems that, when I have multiple unpinned applications open, sometimes the icons of the unpinned applications move around at random times (it seems that the last active unpinned application moves to the right even though it wasn't the program opened last). And sometimes, when I have only one unpinned application on the taskbar, its icon seems to move from some slot to its right back in its position.

For some reason I suspect some malware or virus may be the cause.

I tried uninstalling ATI Radeon HD6450 drivers and reverting to an older version, as well as uninstalling every program that was installed since the day the problem started, to no avail. I found four malware in the meantime but even removing said malware did not solve my problem.

A:Unpinned taskbar icons moving around the taskbar

I don't think it's malware. If it's any consolation, my machine at work does this occasionally, and it's clean. I don't know what's causing it, but I've just chalked it up to being a quirk in Windows.

Yesterday I went into msconfig startup and disabled Quick Time and Apple Push. When I rebooted, the taskbar color had changed from light blue to purple and when I click on the systray, there is now a thick border around the icon menu. When I also noticed other appearance changes, e.g. the startup menu had the light blue border, now it has a light green (see attachments). What could have cause the change? Is there a way to get back to the former appearance without enabling what I disabled?

Right click on the middle of your desktop and choose Personalize.
When the Personalization opens you will see Color as one of the options, if you click on this you will see different colors you can use for desktop's surrounded area.  Click on the color you want, then click on Save changes.

Yesterday (1-22-16) my email program came all back after being deprived of it for the last 2 full weeks.
BUT. . .I don't like what they did with my taskbar! Could someone please tell me how to change it back to how it was?

Now each time I have to switch from email to browser, I have to click several times on their vertical up/down arrows. This isn't working for me.

Anyone help please? Thanks so very much!!! Adela

Last night my computer just randomly restarted and when it started back up, the task bar and start menu looked different. Instead of the black vista look, it now is gray and similar to older versions of windows. Also, it won't let me connect to the internet or even open Firefox and Internet Explorer freezes when I try to open it. Has this happened to anyone? Is there a way to fix it or do I have a virus?

Also, I should add that I have never been able to do a system restore on this computer. It tells me I have errors on the C drive and when I try to fix them it tells me it can't do it while the drive is in use and to schedule it for the next time the computer restarts. But it never lets me schedule anything.

Any help is appreciated!!

A:Taskbar folders icon changed to IE

Hello vcq,

That looks like it's for Windows Explorer. See if this may help: Right click on the taskbar icon to open it's Jump List menu.
Right click on Windows Explorer in the Jump List.
Right click on Properties in it's context menu.
In the Shortcut tab, click on the Change Icon button, select the folder icon, and OK out to apply.
Sometimes you may need to repeat this 2-3 times to take affect.

You probably set your theme to windows classic,
Just open up personalize, and from there set your theme to VISTA, it should fix your problem "hopefully" rep back if not and we wil come up with another solution.

Thanks for looking...any help will be greatly appreciated.

I am running Windows XP.
At start-up, my computer opens a window [Common] that lists four files: _helper. dll, helper.dll, _helper.sig, helper.sig.
When I close this window, I see my desktop, but...
my taskbar has changed
Internet Explorer will not open
Norton will not perform a scan
Sytem Restore will not run

I downloaded (via laptop) Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware program
It installs, but when I try to run I get: Runtime error 372

I was able to run Hijackthis and have a log if necessary.
Thank You

A:_helper.dll, taskbar changed, IE won't open

It's possible the the mbam download was corrupted. See if you can download it directly using safemode w/networking. Try running it in normal modeIf mbam won't installSome types of malware will disable MBAM and other security tools. If MBAM will not install, try renaming it. Right-click on the mbam-setup.exe file and change the .exe extension to .bat, .com, .pif, or .scr and then double-click on it to run.If after installation, MBAM will not run, open the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware folder in Program Files, right-click on mbam.exe and change the .exe as noted above. Then double-click on it to run.If it won't run in normal mode, run it in safemode for now

Basically I am in the following situation:
I am a web developer - therefore I like to have applications such as Opera, Firefox, IETester, FileZilla, Visual Web Developer, DreamWeaver and several other programs open at the same time;
I am currently revising for an exam - therefore I may need to have Opera, Firefox, Word, Excel and several other programs open at the same time;
I sometimes like to watch films, listen to music, play games etc etc to chill out a bit - perhaps in a break from my revision.

In each of the three above situations, I like to pin the icons to the taskbar. Problem is that to have them all pinned to the taskbar would make it overflow - even with DisplayFusion installed with a taskbar on both screens.

Is there any way to group icons into one icon on the taskbar - so hovering over an icon called, say, Developer, will bring up a list of Developer icons (without having to open a window and open the programs from there)? Alternatively is there a way to change "modes" so that, on clicking Developer from a list, it will repopulate the taskbar with any programs I have previously added to the taskbar when in that mode? I do not want to create a user account for each mode - thats just long.

If anyone knows of a way to do this or a program which may be able to achieve this then please let me know. Thanks in advance for any help.
