Unwanted Cover Page

Q: Unwanted Cover Page

I have a Lexmark Optra Lxi + printer connected to a NetWare 4.11 server by parrallel cable. I have two new computers using Windows 2000 Pro and every time I print from those machines I get a sort of cover page with the users name spelled out ascii style:

and some other information including the app that sent the print job, time, etc. I can't seem to find out out to shut this function off.

I have 4 other machines running Win98 and they DO NOT get the extra cover page when they print.

Thanks.

PS I put this in networking because I'm not sure if the problem is with the server (Novell) or the clients printing on the network (Win2K)

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Greetings, all!

The member, Telecote, posted the following, but there are no responses:

Can anyone tell me if there's a way to use Windows XP Fax in a manual mode so that I can enter calling card information without writing a script for each calling card? I'd like to be able to take a document, set the fax to manual, dial all the calling card numbers, PIN, etc., and then once the fax connection is made get Fax to send. Is there a way to do this?

After a couple hours of work, I finally got a script to work its way through the prompts for my calling card. But there ought to be a simpler way!

Thanks for any suggestions!Click to expand...

Since I am a new member, I am unable to contact Telecote directly to find out what s/he did to make the program work.

I want to use a calling card to send a fax that does not exist in the profiles listed in the Fax Wizard's Calling Card setup. The rules that can be created for designing a new card definition do not work with the prepaid card that I use and like using.

I am running XP with Office 2000 Premium programs.

I have searched this board, a few others, and the support site at Microsoft and have not found an answer to what should be a simple question.

Any ideas?

Thanks, I appreciate it!

All right. Word is killing me lately.

I have a document with a cover page. Insert > Cover Page; nothing fancy. Word creates the quick part and throws in a page break. So I insert a paragraph above the page break and anchor all my cover page elements to it. This is fine. It's great. The cover page is exactly what I want.

The problem is the next page. There is a paragraph marker at the top of the page that I cannot delete. What's worse, when I select it, Word selects *everything* on the cover page, as if all that stuff were anchored to this crazy paragraph instead of the one at the top of the cover page. In shock, I select the paragraph mark I thought was the anchor, but Word doesn't select anything else. This is clearly crazy talk.

There is a next-page section break immediately following the page break because the cover needs different margins, but do not be fooled by this red herring. If the object selection behavior in the previous paragraph wasn't enough indication, this next part corroborates the insanity: I can't delete that paragraph mark even if I delete the cover page. I only delete it if I delete everything on the cover page.

So it seems like Word ignores my anchoring configuration and force-anchors everything to this other, invincible paragraph. Can someone please explain what's going on? Does a cover page not actually count, or something? Thanks for any input!

chris.

A:Crazy cover page anchoring problem in Word 2010

Also (though technically this is a completely different issue but still crazy) the leading on one of my chapter headers is not cooperating. Structurally it's identical to every other chapter header:
Immediately preceded by a next-page section break
Leaded at 24 pt before
Immediately followed by a subheading
Not that I think it makes a difference, but everything's using window/orphan control as well. Anyway, for this one chapter, the leading isn't applied.

But really, that's what I would expect: leading shouldn't occur at the top margin. Which means my other chapter headings are the ones that are misbehaving, but I don't know why their leading counts and this one chapter's doesn't. They're using the exact same style and everything. Is there a section/page configuration that allows leading at the top margin? Maybe I misconfigured the other sections...

chris.

[edit]
Well, at least this one is intentionally (as in, documentedly) crazy. So this problem's fixed. Still have that cover issue deal, though.

I can change to another page through tools->internet options then home page, but every time I restart the computer, it will go back to this default unwanted home page.

I have tried using a few spyware detectors to no avail either.

When I start the computer, it shows the desktop for a second, then a file opens. I just have to click the red "X" in the top right corner and it goes back to the desktop, but how do I get rid of the file that opens. It is called "common" and there's nothing in it.

A:Unwanted page at boot up.

What program is "common" opening in? Or is it a file folder?
Click the Help menu to see what program -- if it just says About Windows, then it is a folder that is opening in My Computer. If so, check the address bar to see the full path to this folder. If the address bar is not displayed, click View | Toolbars and check it. If your system is not set to display the full path, you can click the down arrow at the right end of the address bar, and that will let you see just where this "Common" folder is located. paste that path into your next reply.
Or, you can click Tools | Folder Options..., View tab, and check one of the Display the full path in the ??? bar options.

Whether it's a folder, or a file opening in a program, we need to find out where it's starting from. Copy and paste the following code into Notepad, then save it on your desktop as Runkey.bat Be sure you set the Save As Type: setting to All Files. Then double click the file. A notepad window will open up. Paste the contents into your next reply.

Code:

In Safe Mode, I have run updated versions of AVG, Ewido, Microsoft Antispyware, Spybot S&D, CW Shredder, Adaware w/ VX2, Spyware Blaster, Spyware Guard. Also ran Windows Update for all fixes, etc.

I previously had a program listed in Add/Remove Programs called Mysearchbar, but I couldn't uninstall it, and a search of My Computer didn't locate it. However, the last set of scans seems to have removed it.

Also--possibly related--I am unable to enable Internet Connection Firewall on my dialup connection. I get a message 'Cannot enable shared access. Error 1060: the specified service does not exist as an installed service.' I don't know how to deal with this.

Really strange happening!!~
Hi guys
I use Windows 98

Until yesterday - whenever I logged in to the net, the first page I saw - and the one I wanted by default - was the www.megalink.net web site. (That is our ISP). But something happened yesterday that is very distressing. Since then, when I click on the I.E. icon to log-on , what comes up is a Google page - with the headline "I can Find It" at the top. And the URL in the address line is www.icanfindit.net/?aid=577.

So I went into IE Tools, Internet options, General and sure enough, that new URL is in the address line for the home page address. So I changed it back to the Megalink URL, clicked APPLY and OK. Then I manually changed the URL in the IE screen to Megalink, and it came up. I went back into Tools, Internet Options and clicked save current.

But when I log off and back on - the same problem recurs. And while the Google page is loading, this line appears on the task bar at the bottom of the screen: http://4-counter.com/?b=crue

Any thoughts?

anxiously - StanC

Hi there.
I have a machine that runs Vista. A few days ago I had become the recipient of an unwanted toolbar or web page that calls itself Mywebsearch. I say toolbar or web page because I’m not absolutely sure which of the two it is. Maybe it’s both. My normal home page is Google, and I want it to stay that way too. When I go onto the Net, my Google home page is there. But when I visit anything and return to my home page by clicking on the home icon, that home page changes toMywebsearch. It doesn’t make any difference using the function “Make Google my home page”, because Mywebsearch overrides it.

I have gone looking on the Net for ways to remove this Mywebsearch trash, and so far they all seem to involve going to the Control Panel and removing programs called “My Web Search” and “My Search Assistant.” I cannot find these programs on the list. How the hell do I get rid of this creepy trash?

Thanks for your time

Hope someone can help. As I search on Google, a automatic unwanted new page pops up with an MSN Search on it. How can you turn this off or stop it from happening? If it wasn't MSN one would say its a malware of some kind. Any one know how to deal with it?
Thanks in advance.

A:Unwanted MSN Search page

MSN still has redirects though, and that makes what it is doing malicious (because you are not in control of how your system is working).

Check your hosts file and see if there are any entries there that shouldn't be. That's the easiest way to redirect a search. Did you download any MSN toolbars or anything?

I notice that others have posted something about the subject unwanted page that pops up when I go to some site (like CNET) and click a Download button. The URL of the page is http://rvzr-a.akamaihd.net/sd/wrap-0.01.html?u=http%3A%2F%2Frvzr-a.akamaihd.net%2Fsd%2Fapps%2Ffusionx%2F0.0.3.html%3Faff%3D1700-1016. It is always blank, but pops up in front of the page I'm on. I have run Malwarebytes and SuperAntiSpyware, and they find nothing. I have HiJackThis on my laptop and can run and save a log, but per the instructions, will not do that until asked.

I notice this only happens with Firefox, my default browser. It does not appear if I use IE, so I suspect something has altered the configuration file for Firefox.

What is this thing and how do I stop it from appearing?

Hi..I'm new here so please bear with me.

Every time I switch on my pc and go online I get a web page come up that has replaced my home page of choice. A search engine I've never heard of and don't want.
I go into settings/general and delete it and put in my own web page of choice only to have it reappear next time I go online. Is there any way I can get rid of this for good and keep my home page of choice permenantly.

Thanks for any advice.

You will need to download hijackthis and run a scan. Also spybot

see here:
http://www.webattack.com/get/hijackthis.html

http://www.safer-networking.org/index.php?page=download

remember, please check these out BEFORE you start downloading.
When you have run a hijackthis scan then post the logs here and soemone will help you out.

These programs will show you what has taken over and then those with good knowledge of reg entries and viruses will be able to tell you what to fix. good luck

I have windows xp and MSIE 7. AOL 9.0 SE was installed on my computer (stuck with dial-up due to geography). When I now open MSIE, the AOL Toolbar page is the opening page. Even though it is supposed to not appear once use, it continues to come up as the opening page in MSIE, even though my home page is Google. I understand that removel of the AOL toolbar does not solve this problem and compounds the problem with error messages in MSIE. Help please!

A:Unwanted home page ?!?

Click on the link in my signature to download Hijack This. Download it and click "Save".

It’s very important that you save it to its own folder on your hard drive, such as program files (not temporary files or the desktop), so that it can create proper back-ups and be able to restore them if necessary.

The downloaded program will be a .zip file. Extract the .exe file from it and save in the permanent folder you just created.

Click on Hijackthis.exe to launch the program.

Click the "Scan" button when the scan is finished the scan button will become "Save Log" click that and save the log.

The log should open in notepad. Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" then Paste the log back here in a reply.

DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

My home page has been changed to an unwanted search engine which has the address, use blank. At the same time I get pop-ups regarding spy-ware. Also since this happened I cannot activate my desktop icons without being online If I do the computer just freezes and I have to reboot. I have tried many things including re-setting web settings and I have used spy-bot search and destroy and ad-aware but I just can't remove them. I understand that the only other method would be to re-install windows or re-set the registry. Any advice.

Hi paul.m, and welcome to TSG

I'm not a security expert but there are some who donate their expertise on this site. However they will want to see a copy of a "HijackThis" (HJT) log to help you properly.

If the hijack is really bad (i.e. fast) try and download startpage guard as a temporary measure to keep you on the one page and then download and run SpywareBlaster (this is a preventative to help stop further infections) and CWShredder and also check for updates on Ad-Aware and spybot to see whether you have the very latest versions.

Also, get HijackThis (HJT) and if there still problems, post a HJT log here and wait for one of the security experts to get to you.

For Spyware tools, some sites to download from are:

I recently downloaded Babylon Translator but decided to opt out. I did a search of Cdrive
and deleted all that was found. The trouble is that when I opened Mozilla Firefox instead
of coming up with my default Home Page (which is my ISP's HP), I got a Babylon Search Engine which has been "enhanced by Google". To my mind it is a Google alias. In German to boot.
I went to Control Panel>Internet Options and my default HP is as it should be,my ISP.
I have looked all over the Control Panel,Program Files and elsewhere to no avail.
How can I get rid of this Babylon engine whose address is search.babylon.com/home.

Problem: I am unable to change my home page setting.

Operating system: Windows XP.

I have always used “Blank” as my home page setting However last week something got into my computer and changed my homepage to “searchpage.html”.

When I open up Widows Explorer instead of a blank screen I get “Searchpage”. If I type in say www.vote.com another search page is displayed with the following message:

“You try to go to the vote.com
For visit this site follow this link: HTTP://vote.com
or type in full url (including HTTP://) in the adress bar.”

I have tried to delete “C:\searchpage.html” from my C: drive but it keeps coming back.
I have also tried to use another web site for my home page but it always goes back to “about:blank”. I also have a “about” icon on my desktop that I can’t delete.

How do I get rid of this junk.

Can someone please HELP!

As if not enough, somtimes when I just started to surf the net, a plug-in called "websiteviewer" will automatic install.

I tried scanning with Spybot S&D, AdAware, CWShredder,
each time I fixed the problems found, and when I reboot the PC again, the same problems came back again. Pls help me... thnks a million.....
