I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I need to connect workstations running XP to a network, heard (overheard?) XP and server 2008 are not compatible. Is this true? Do I need to stick w/ server 2003? Are there programs to overcome this alleged obstacle? Thanks to anyone with knowledgeable input.

A:XP and Server 2008 compatible?

I am studying Win2003 Server and much of what I've learned will apply.

If you set your Win2008 Server as a Domain Server, using the default Forest Level, it will support NT thru XP.

Now if your talking about Managed Desktops (managed from the Domain Server; updates, configuration, etc.), that is another can-of-worms.

For small organizations, Managed Desktops is not a good idea. Let each user set the Windows configuration to their liking and/or company policy. Win Updates should be set to Notification ONLY, so they do not interfere with on-going work. They download/install whenever they are not doing anything.

A:Do I install mobo drivers the same way for Windows Server 2008 R2...

When I set my 2008 server up I used the drivers labeled server if available, or the regular Win 7 drivers if they weren't. As I recall, server 2008 didn't need much if anything for the motherboard as the default drivers did the job. The problematic ones for me were for a scanner.

Hi All,

I am planning to buy Dell Precision 650/670 with approximately the following configuration:

Intel Processor XEON 2.8GHZx2 (Dual)
Intel Motherboard 7505 CHIPSET
Supported Interfaces : IDE/SATA/SCSI
Harddisk: Optional
Optical : Optional
AGP Graphic Card

I plan to run a server application on these machines, on either Windows 2003 or 2008 Enterprise Server.

I have searched the dell.com website and cannot find any drivers for these models for Windows 2003/2008 operating system.

So I just want to know that are there any working drivers (for all the system components) available for these models for Windows 2003/2008 operating system.

Has anyone been using these systems in a similar setup/environment.

Please share the drivers/links any other performance considerations necessary.

Thanks for your help and guidance.

Also my PC needs a driver with OpenGL.. for MC.

This is more of a post complaining than it is asking for help/advice.

Screen corruption has been a problem with every version of the nVidia driver's I've used, with the possible exception of the default ones Microsoft ships with Vista. I've tried whatever it was just before the 100.65s, then I tried the 100.65s, 101.70s and now 158.18. The problem has not gotten any better throughout all of these revisions.

This is what you see when Vista asks for your permission to do something. Notice how the continue button isn't even visible initially.

Now the continue button appears when the mouse is hovered over where you guess the button to be.

Hardware involved here is a eVGA 7800gs co AGP card. The pictures were taken with 158.18 drivers. The corruption isn't usually capturable with print screen, although after an "episode" with VLC it was and I got a screenie of it shoot me a message if you want to see it, but it contains some text that violates the TOS of this board. Basically everything is not displaying except the taskbar, and a few items I've drug the mouse over.

That is what happens if you open an app that drops Vista into Classic mode, the app that caused that was Trillian. On the right side of that 2nd pic was my Trillian buddy list AFTER I had minimized it. It shows up all washed out white in that pic because of the horrible lighting conditions for a digital camera shot, but in reality it was displaying... Read more

A:NVIDIA drivers for Vista suck (updated to include Win 7 and Server 2008 r2)

Perhaps your trouble is elsewhere. nVidia is universally rated by users (including this forum) as the best for video cards and for drivers. We see no special problems between VISTA and nVidia...
There are always troubles that crop up because video graphics cards are so fragile, but I would not consider a blanket indictment of nVidia as valid.
I would be more likely to consider power supply and memory.

I created the following performance counter using logman.exe.

logman.exe create counter US_Triton_Perf_Log -b 9/23/2015 09:30:00 -e 9/30/2099 18:30:00 -r -s $server -si $frequence -cf $folder\$server.txt -f $logtype  -o C:\local\logs\Perfout_$Server --a -v mmddhhmm  -rf  $max_duration

When I do this across multiple servers specifically for Windows Servers 2008/2012, the counter is created to repeat and run everyday at 930PM and stops running everyday at 430PM. This works perfectly fine as intended. However, When I do this for a Windows
2003 server, my created counter is very different.
For example, in this case, I have set to the counters to start at 930AM and end at 1830PM, because I have set a maximum duration of 9 hours, the job terminates and begins on the next day, since I have the repeat option on. However, this does not apply to
our 2003 server; logman creates the job to run once a week in this case it would be on a Wednesday. In addiiton, I noticed that the job doesn't not even start at it's indented time. It actually does not start at all. I also notice that the jobs on all windows
2003 servers are created in a pending status, which then prevents me from removing the counter remotely.

I would like to know if windows 2003 is capable of working like my win 2008/2012 servers using logman, and if historically, the job has to be kicked off through scheduled task.

Both Jobs are using the same criteria, but a... Read more

We had:

1) 1 Windows Server 2003 running Active Directory services to manage logon and permissions for file sharing.
2) 15 workstations.

We now want to have:

1) 1 Windows Server 2008 R2 server running Active Directory services to manage logon and permissions for file sharing.
2) 15 same workstations, with their same user profiles.

So I joined the 2008 R2 server to the domain, and then used the dcpromo tool to make it a domain controller.

Problem is, whenever I take the old server offline, (the 2003 one) everything flips out, logons are slow, and the 2008 server gives people trying to access shared files weird errors like that the server that authenticated them cannot be contacted, and asks them to log in again with their username and password before accessing shared files on the server.

What did I do wrong? I must be forgetting something.

Hi guys,
What free Antivirus software for servers?
What free anti-malware would NOT be a good idea?
My friend has purchased a Poweredge server to act as a fileserver for a private network not connected to the internet..  He uses 2 laptops at the most  to access files on the server.
However at some points he will update Windows Server 2008 plus odd bits by temporaily hooking up to the Internet., and obviously leave himself open to malware etc. for a short time.
The cost of server Antivirus is very high and usually effective for 10 workstations upwards, and obviously he would appreciate keeping costs down.
I would appreciate thoughts on ideas for avoiding a costly solution.
Also, if he got Malware on it (e.g. Rootkit or Delta) would current Bleeping Computer tools (e.g. Rkill, RogueKiller etc) still work on the server - or does it require another approach?
I am asking fior advice BEFORE he gets started while options are open.
Thanks in advance guys

A:Free Server Antivirus ? e.g. for Windows Server 2008

The answer is fairly simple. Just read the details on the site -
Microsoft Security Essentials is available for small businesses with up to 10 PCs.
• Microsoft Security Essentials:
Microsoft updated it’s free Anti-Virus solution at the end of 2010 to support Windows 2008/R2.
This is easily one of the better free offerings as Microsoft has updated this solution to complete directly with some of the biggest solutions, such as Mcafee and Symantec paid versions.

When downloading, simply choose Windows Vista / Windows 7, as Microsoft has yet to update the website.http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/

I have a file server at home with a Quad core, 4gb ram, and a 3tb of storage. It is running Ubuntu Desktop and sharing video files primarily. From my school I have access to a free copy of Windows Server 2008 R2. Other than the server I have 2 Windows 7 desktops, 1 Windows 7 laptop and 1 Windows Vista laptop.

I am interested in moving to a Windows setup as I am done with the ?Ubuntu? experiment. WHS looks like what I need, but I have a free copy of WS 2008 and I would miss the $50 for WHS. My goals can be described best as:

Need to Haves:
? File/media server (local network)
? Dedicated game server for various games for friends.
? Print server

Nice to Haves:
? Music/Video Streaming over the internet
? Automatic backup server
? File server over the internet
? Ability to manager other PC?s from the server

My ability as an admin:
? No experience
? Willing to learn and put forth initial effort to get setup
? Don?t have time to really spend more than 1 day moving from Ubuntu to the new setup.
? Don?t want to be stuck constantly screwing with things to get it right or keep it running.

What is going to be best option for my situation?

A:Help choose: Windows Home Server 2011 vs. Windows Server 2008 R2

Honestly, I use both in their proper settings, and unless you have a domain at home with multiple users, Windows Server 2008 R2 is overkill...and would require much more tweaking and add-in apps to do what you want. Given your write-up, WHS 2011 is the way to go. It does much of what you want out of the box, and is designed for people who don't want to become server admins (or at least not be forced to).

I'm trying to decide between Windows Home Server and Windows Server 2008 R2 for my home server PC. Ordinarily it would be a clear cut choice, but I've got a free copy of Server 2008 R2 through my academic MSDN subscription. I'd like to avoid spending extra money if Server 2008 R2 would do the job. But I'm willing to buy Home Server should it prove necesary. Any input is appreciated. Thanks.

A:Windows home server vs Server 2008 R2

Server 2008 R2 is a more fully functional product. You will be able to do similar things, but it might be a little more involved getting it set up and working. Plus, if you are interested in IT, you could use the Server 2008 R2 experience....but you won't get hired for your knowledge on Windows Home Server.

My vote is Server 2008 R2 without a doubt.

Hi all
Have been a LONG LONG user of Linux as a server (hosting VM's XP / W7 mix) and file / print sharing.

I used to avoid MS like the plague as far as SERVER environments are concerned - probably because my first experince was Windows NT (Windows NeanderThal or Windows No Thanks) which was SO HORRIBLE that it put me off Windows servers for ages.

(Note I'm using a server in a HOME environment where we have around 8 machines (most of which are actually mine for testing -- not a corporate environment which has other considerations).

The problem now with the latest Linux distros that they are trying to be "A Better Windows than Windows". You can of course customize them but I haven't got the time or patience to do this any more. To select what packages to install / leave out now is a 100% pain and if you do it wrong the chances are the system will give errors.

I've looked at the new SUSE 11.2 -- slick and polished - bit I don't NEED "an alternative Windows".

I've just been looking at Windows Server 2008 R2 (got it from Technet) and I'm REALLY IMPRESSED with it so far. I've installed the STANDARD version - you don't need datacenter or Enterprise version for a home server.

It runs vmware server on it just fine (although I might go the whole hog and use the Hyper-V virtualisation -- need to do a bit more research).

I'm quite happy letting MS do the updates than having to mess around with Kernel compiles etc.

One of my clients purchased a "stand alone" 8 camera DVR. DVR-X 9100 server.
all cameras and system were working fine until last week when suddenly when we start up the system, says " Driver 0% not found" Then, we get error, Either dvr not installed or driver not found. The system is windows based. System recovery is off.
The company they purchased from is not responding, when they purchased they were not given any disks or anything. Bottom line, where can I find the drivers for this unit OR should I just find and install a new DVR board and get the installed cameras back up?
Please let me know your opinions.

In the DISA Security Technical Implementation Guides (STIGS) there is a test for event tracing (#V31026).
The STIG indicates that if you are running Win 2008 the absence of etwenable = false is not a 'finding' because event tracing is enabled by default (on 2008 servers) and it should be enabled and running.
Is this the same for windows 2008 R2 Enterprise Server?
I cannot find the element etwenable in my 2008 R2 Enterprise server test system, it does not exist.
Does that mean the requirement for the STIG is met, and event tracing IS enabled by default on Win 2008 R2 Enterprise Servers?  No further action is required to enable?

Is there an easy way to verify it actually is enabled?  Check registry value, run script?

Excerpt from the STIG:
Microsoft Dot Net Framework 4.0 STIG
Rule Title:  Event tracing for Windows (ETW) for Common Language Runtime events must be enabled.
STIG ID: APPNET0067  Rule ID: SV-41075r1_rule
Vuln ID: V-31026
Severity: CAT II Class: Unclass
Beginning with Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008, ETW Tracing is enabled by default and the "etwEnable" setting is not required in order for Event Tracing to be enabled.
An etwEnable setting of "true" IS required in earlier versions of Windows as ETW is disabled by default.

Hello Glueck,
The Std/Ent means those keys work for either Standard\Enterprise, they also work on either 32-bit or 64-bit versions, both of which should be available from the Volume License website.  The MAK B key is probably the one you want to use, the KMS

I decided to install windows server 2008 onto a virtual machine and play around with it and try to learn.
I've messed around with lots of stuff on it. The two things I would like to get working are FTP and VPN into the server. I've sort of managed to get ftp working. I can access it using the private ip address of, but when I try to access it with my public IP this is where the problem starts. Port forwarding is set correctly on my wireless router, port 21 is being forward to So when I go type ftp://publicipaddress into my web browser it pops up asking for the username and password. This is where I?m stuck. I have no idea what it is, I?ve messed with lots of the settings and whatever I do it still asks for this username and password, even though if I access the ftp server through my LAN using the private IP address it doesn?t ask for a username or password, it's only when using the public ip that it asks. Anyone got any idea's how I set the username and password to something I actually know?

I would like to be able to VPN into the server. I did follow a guide, but it didn?t work when my friend tested. Could someone point me to a nice guide on how to achieve this?
I'm more interested in getting the ftp to work for now.

Thanks all!

the Virtual server is run under a specific user-id; I think you need that id and password

<ctl><alt>del will get the task manager and the column name User Name is what you need.

scroll to the process controlling the VM

you may need to alter the settings for the VM to force it to run under another
specific user which you can set the pwd
create new account
set new password for it
login to that account to create the %profile% areathen assign the VM to run under that login

i want to know difference between win server 2008 and win7 that oly i want to know

A:windows server 2008 rc

There are lots of differences. One is a client (win7) and 1 is designed to be a server (2008). The server offers various basic network services such as DHCP, DNS, WINS, VPN, Active Directory, Certificate Services, IIS Web Server, FTP Server, etc. Server 2008 is far more expensive to buy licenses for.

I've been using it for the last month or two and very pleased. It feels more stable to me. I just enabled 'Desktop Experience' feature and the theme service and BAM, I have a (more stable) version of Windows 7.

I have installed Windows Server 2008 on one of my hard drives. It works and feels awesome. However there is one issue that I cannot resolve.

I have two PC's in my home that share the same internet connection. When running XP Pro both computers are able to access the internet with no problems however when I switch to the Windows Server 2008 on the host computer the PC that is running XP Pro can not access the internet.

The problem is when I look at the NICs the one for the other PC says "Network Cable is Unplugged" but it's not. Like I stated before it works fine if I reboot and use Windows XP.

Is there some setting within server 2008 that I need to change to correct this? The NIC card in question is using NVIDIA nForce Networking Controller and the drivers that Windows server has assigned.

Someone with some knowledge please help

Turn on ICS for the ISP connection on the W2K8 box.

EDIT: Let me see if I understand this right: ISP connection in to 2k8 server. From there out over ethernet to XP Pro box. Right?

Hello Guys,

This is a great forum and I'm really glad to be a part of it. So far, I've just been just reading posts but never really posted but I thought it's time I did since I need some guidance.

I'm a Technical Analyst so I'm pretty technical. However, I've never worked with Windows Server 2008. In other words, I have done my MCSE and know how to work around Windows Server 2003.

I might sound dumb but I have to ask this question. I'm running Windows 7 Build 7100 RC x64 as my main OS. I have a powerful laptop so I'm not worried about the requirements. I also have tons of important data on this laptop so it's important that I do not erase any data while installing Server 2008.

My question to you guys is -

How do I install Windows Server 2008?

1) Dual Boot (i.e. Create a partition and install it on that)

2) Virtualize (Install Vmware Server or use Microsoft Virtual PC)

The reason why I want to install Windows Server 2008 is because I want to test it out, play around with it and learn more as I plan to be a Network Administrator so this is my first time pretty much building or installing a server.

On the other hand, I downloaded VMware Server but unfortunately, I'm unable to install it as I keep getting the following error.

- Setup cannot continue. The Microsoft runtime DLL installer failed to complete installation.
Please advise.

Thanks in advance.

A:Windows Server 2008 Installation

My preference with multi-booting any OSs is to only install one OS per harddrive, with all other harddrives disconnected during the installation. This permits using the F8 boot menu as a means of selecting the OS to boot to. I have tried a number of boot loader programs, and every one of them caused problems, and when a boot loader goes wrong, it can effect all OSs, not just one.

I have heard alot of people that were happy with VMWare, and it may be just fine...I don't know, because I have never used it. The only way that I might, is if I had insufficient harddrives to handle the load.

I tried running sqlexpress executable(SQLEXPRWT_x64_ENU.exe) on Windows 8 Consumer preview Build 8250. It throws compatibility issue.

I tried resolving this issue by doing "Windows feature turn off". But this edition does not allow me to save changes on Windows feature.

Kindly guide me whether Sql server 2008 R2 need any prerequesite or it can be installed by simply doing windows add feature.

I have a dedicated windows server 2008 r2 enterprise.

I am running an SSTP VPN but only have 2 IP address to connect to the internet on.

My issue is that one of the IPs is for the IIS7 etc and the other is for VPN use.

How can I apply the same IP to more than one user allowing them to connect all at one.

There are in total about 5 users who want to use the VPN service and I dont really want to pay

For extra IPs due to the price.

How do I apply the same IP to all accounts and allow them to connect and all use the same IP at once.

I followed the helpful guides on here to get a bootable USB flash drive that installs any version of Windows 7, either platform, and it's been working out great.

Now, am I crazy for thinking I've seen a guide on how to add Windows Server 2008 R2 to the mix? For some reason, I thought it was possible, but I'm not seeing any guides for it.
