media players stuttering and/or freezing videos

Q: media players stuttering and/or freezing videos

i have had this problem for a while. i use media player classic, part of the k-lite codec pack. whenever i play a video within 10-20 mins the video starts to stutter, slowing down before completely stopping as if it had been paused. i have tried watching in windows media player also, the same thing happens.

i am using Catalyst 9.12 drivers.

i had this problem with my old video card (GeForce 8800GTS) too.

i have done some googling and other people have had this problem, for some it was their drivers. others have had success with changing the output settings under DirectShow Video in media player classic. i have tried that, but it still happens, so i am thinking it is definitely a driver issue.

has anyone else had this problem? and if so how were u able to solve it?

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Have you tried an alternative to WMP or Classic?
Jet Player or VLC?
The Jet Player seems to play almost anything that WMP won't, and it's got all the extra's like BBE and equalizer settings. ( see if you still have the same problems with Jet)

Alright let me start from the beginning. I replaced my 128mb 5200 nvidia card with a 256mb 6200OC yesterday. I will have to admit I did nothing but switch out the cards and boot up my system. I figured since i was replacing a nvidia with an nvidia it would be cool. Drivers and software would be same, right? Well everything worked cool. I adjusted resolution and so on and updated drivers to new 78.01, i previously had 77.77. So far so good. I start to reinstall some games I wanted to play, silent hill 4, halo combat evolved, half life 2, max payne, fallout, and cod:uo. So far so good. I play the games. They go fine. No probs so far. Oops i lie. one prob when installing half life. I got to disc five, had nerovision running in the background (silly me), and system froze. Had to power down by holding power till off and when restart just started over installation of half life. everything fine.

so this morning i go to get a little "jerk before work" (yeah i said it, not ashamed at all) and none of my vids will play with windows media player. it just freezes my system. i try divx player, vlc, nero showtime, and nothing works. can barely use computer in this state. I have to power down again the same way as before.

so after work i come home, remove the card and plug in to my onboard vga. i then uninstall drivers from previous card and install drivers for onboard. Vids played fine with onboard. Went through the old restart game and then i put in 6200 again. i then update... Read more

64bit Versus 32bit Media Players Is there an advantage to using a 64bit version of a player rather than a 32bit version? MPC x64 versus MPC x32? or WMP x64 versus WMP x32?

I have read a lot of discussion about codecs working or not working for 32bit and/or 64bit media players and operating systems. My question is what is the advantage of using a 64bit media player? Is the picture better, clearer, sharper? Does the 64bit player use less resources its corresponding 32bit player? Codec support is a lot better for 64bit versions now than in the recent past, but still why go through the hassle of purposefully switching to a 64bit player? Is there really a performance or quality edge to making the switch in players?

I have Vista Home Premium x64 and ask this question to help me decide whether to use the 64bit version or 32bit version of Windows Media Player and Media Player Classic-HC. If there is no performance or quality difference then I will stick with the 32bit version of both players until such time as either there is a performance/quality edge or extra steps are not required for using the 64bit versions of the players.

Thank you for your help.

A:64bit Media Players Versus 32bit Media Players

I'm using the x64 version of MPC-HC now. I don't notice any performance or quality gains over the 32 bit version though. Should there be? Am I missing something? Does anyone get better performance or higher quality out of using the x64 version of a media player instead of the 32 bit version?

Yesterday I tried to watch some videos on YouTube and I noticed at points during the video the footage would sort of stutter or skip ahead a few seconds, it's sort of like a millisecond freeze and then the video will fast forward a second to catch up with where it should be, all the while the audio remains unaffected.

It happens every few minutes, and I've tried looking at videos in different players but the result is the same, the stuttering remains, it's not bad enough to mar the experience altogether, but it's enough to be constantly noticible and draw my attention away.

I've looked into some possible solutions, such as gong into about:config and altering the time interval Firefox saves the tabs at, since one piece of advice said this was the issue, but extending the time interval doesn't seem to make any difference.

I've also tried uninstalling and reinstalling Adobe flash player but it hasn't helped.

There doesn't seem to be too much information out there on the issue, so I'm at a loss of what to do at this point?

The only thing that changed yesterday, was the day before I had updated my Nvidia drivers, but I really don't see how this could be the cause.

I don't think specifications have much to do with this issue, but it's better safe than sorry.

Hi there!

Problem is pretty straightforward. Whenever I try to open a video file (whether it be .wmv, .avi, etc) through the File -> Open menu, whatever media player I'm using (except Winamp... that works for some reason) crashes! Both VLC and another program says that the "ModName" was msyuv.dll in the error report, so I guess that's a start. I've done full system virus scans, full system spyware scans, defragged twice with Diskeeper, cleaned and defraged my registry, downloaded a new copy of msyuv.dll, deleted my msyuv.dll in C:\Windows\System32 and rebooted (which forces System Restore to install a new copy), and NONE of this has changed a thing. Well, the only thing it has changed is that in some programs, the video file now opens after a 5-10 freeze (but the PLAYERS still keep crashing... applications that edit video files only open), but when trying to add a second, it crashes again. I've also uninstalled/rolled back WMP11 and removed all it's runtime modules, but that hasn't changed a thing, and I'm also fully up-to-date on Windows Updates.

As you can see this is a bit of a doozy. One thing to note is that I can still view video files fine if I find them through the Windows Explorer and right click -> Open with <player name>. Going through File -> Open causes the program to crashes and/or freeze. Winamp is ABLE to view videos through File -> Open, but no other player can (not even applications like VirtualDub are able to open video me... Read more

This is driving me crazy. Every YouTube vid moves inside the window like someone behind the camera is shaking it violently. The motion distorts into mosaic-like pixelation. I have noticed that this happens only when there is actual motion in the video.

For example, if someone is moving. If there is a still shot of the person, or if just a bunch of text is shown, no stuttering occurs.

And, if I move my cursor constantly inside the vid while it plays, the stuttering stops, but I can't continuously do that!

We're talking about a Windows 7 Fujitsu on Firefox with the latest updates. It's on a university server in Japan, hardwire connected, not wifi.

A wifi connected Panasonic laptop with Windows 8 shows none of this.

It happened after I installed the famous DivX codec. Shortly after, I was unable to play ANY videos in Windows Media Player or Quicktime. I was able to play a FEW select files on the DivX player well, but everything else no longer works correctly. I also can't configure DivX player to be the default player for all media, so that's not gonna work.

The sound is perfect, but there is not a single pixel of video on the screen when I try to play it.

Solutions I have tried:

Installing the DvX codec. THe Xvid Codec. THe MPEG4 codec, and lots of other codec.

I have tried using the FDDshow pack.

I have uninstalled Quicktime/iTunes and reinstalled it.

I have uninstalled all the codecs I downloaded, and have tried reinstalling them.

I have tried altering Windows Media Player to use overlays. No effect either way.

I have tried to make it play at "high quality." It makes the player crash.

I am at my wits end, and about to smash this brand new computer to bits if I cannot get the files working.

I am on Windows XP. My graphics Card is an Nvidia GeForce 6800GS XXX edition.
My processor is an AMD Athlon 64 3200. I have downloaded all the newest drivers, I have media player 10.

The Problem
I am having video stuttering for the duration of 0,5s - 1s exactly every 60s on all games and videos. During the stuttering the framerate drops significantly and rises back to normal immediately after that. The mouse cursor remains unaffected during the stuttering. CPU and GPU usage and temperatures remain normal during the stutter. The Process "System interrupts" raises from 0,1% CPU usage to around 0,5% during this. Sometimes the 60s-interval-stuttering disappears without a cause, but most of the time it persists.

I have also noticed that the same kind of stuttering happens 5-6 times in quick succession when I plug in my mouse or keyboard or plug out my mouse (plugging out keyboard doesn?t trigger it). This kind of stutter also happens 3 times when i Connect my Wireless XBox360 Controller and 1 time when i disconnect it. This happens across all USB ports equally. I have tried plugging out all USB connections. The every-60s stuttering still happens.

The second observation isn?t really a problem, but due to similar stuttering nature they might be connected.
When did the problem start?
My PC started to work less smoothly over the time (some components are 7 years old), so i decided to format my Windows 7-SSD and install Windows 10 Pro freshly on it about a month ago. I have also bought a new PSU around this time, because my old one?s fan degraded due to age.

Need Help
My old laptop has been having a stuttering problem with games for a couple of years now. It?ll stutter for around five seconds, run smooth for around ten seconds, stutter again for five, run smooth for ten. It?ll keep doing that until I stop playing and close the game. It doesn?t start doing the stutter the second I start the game, it?ll start maybe around five minutes into the game and not quit its pattern. It doesn?t matter what game, how old it is, it does this to all.

It also does this while watching online videos. I can?t watch anything on, for example, Hulu, or Gametrailers, without it doing the same stutter pattern.

I didn?t always have this annoyance. It started little over a year after I bought my laptop. During all this time, while putting up with the problem, I?ve done several clean installs. I?ve tried to solve this myself, but never could find anyone with the same exact problem.

I?ve uploaded several videos that show the stutter problem:

At regular intervals the audio will freeze/skip for a second and make a loud grinding noise, then resume. This happens with music, streaming videos, games, pretty much everything. If I'm watching a video or playing a game, the screen will freeze for a second, then resume.

I'm using a Dell Inspiron N4110 laptop with Windows 7

I assume I need to install a new driver or something, but I am pretty computer illiterate and don't exactly know what I need/where I need to get it from/how to figure out what I need.

A:Audio buzzing/stuttering during videos/games

Since the screen will "freeze", suggests the sound problems are just a result of whatever is causing the PC to hang up and not directly a sound problem. Thus another forum section would be more applicable than the sound section.

You can run the Resplendence Latency Mon program and that may help, if you can figure it out as it gives you "information overload".

I have Windows Media Player 9.0 and Quicktime as well. I can't use Windows Media Player beacuse everytime I install BSPlayer I only hear the sound of the movie not the picture. That also goes with BSPlayer as well. No picture only sound. I e-mailed BSPlayer support and I never gotten a reply and I did get one but they sent me a link to where I can download and install some patches, but those patches made my BSPlayer not work at all. I'm looking for a Media Player other than the ones I have that will play anything and everything. I hate VideoLAN because I heard from The ScreenSavers that you have to tweak it and I really don't know what to do.

When you click on the sound file links in your browser, it will automatically download a short .wav file that will automatically launch your default media player. Often the default media player is Real Player or Real Juke Box. It is usually simpler for you to use Windows Media Player to listen to the .wav files. To make Windows Media Player your default .wav file player, follow the below instructions: (this if for Windows Media Player version 6.4.07. - Procedures for different versions may vary.)

1. Open Windows Media Player on your computer by going to Start- Programs- Accessories menu.

2. If it is not there, then go to Start, Run, and type " mplayer2.exe" and it should pop up.

3. In Windows Media Player go to View, options, Formats tab, and select Windows Media File and Windows Audio File. Selecting these boxes should make the Windows Media player your default player for .wav sounds.

Try installing all of the codec packs on this page except for the second (Win98):
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/format/codecdownload.aspx

Check the status of your DirectX by going to Start Run, and typing:
dxdiag
OK.
Run the tests (You can skip the network tests unless you play online games) and see if it finds any errors. Also see what version of DX you have installed.

Open Display Properties, Settings, Advanced and see if your video acceleration is set to maximum.

Update your video card drivers. If you have problems identifying your card or finding updated drivers, come back here .

I am not a person who wants to pay for something if I don't have to.
I really want to enjoy my dvd viewing. I have WinDVD, but it isn't the full application I guess. I keeps popping up the "number" of experiences I have left. All I do is try to figure out how to adjust the sound when it is off-quality and it prompts me I have one experience left. I don't think I care too much about specifics. FF RW Play Subtitles Pause and the ability to have the sound be normal are about all I'm interested in. I'm wondering if there is something out there that won't cost anything.

I find a lot of freeware stuff, but I haven't found any DVD players.
I'm just trying to figure out what kind of choices I even have.
WindowsMediaPlayer will play a disk, but it does not seem to like the DVD in file format.
WinDVD plays the movies either way, but I keep wondering whether I actually have a copy or if it will eventually stop working. Not to mention, the occasional refusal to sound right. drives me nuts.

Basically, I like the way WinDVD looks and feels... I am just left wondering what the deal with it is.

I have WindowsXP MediaCenterEdition. The media center thing is a joke. Way too many screens to go through for something as stupid as playing a DVD or audio CD. I've tried it a couple times and I just have no patience for it. It seems to take somethings simple and complicate it.

So, what are you using?

ugh. I'm so lame. I... Read more

Check the freeware page in my sig. At the same time since you are installing and de-installing so much you might want to do the following : Download install and update CcleanerAfter installing and updating go to options - advanced and tick prompt for registry back upsNow Start up in safe modeDo two runsa) Click on problems and tick all. Click on analyse. At the end you will be prompted for storing a backup. This will be stored, as a default, in My documents. Click on cleaner click on analyse and accept all files to be removed.

Are you talking about website/downloaded videos and sound or CD/DVDs as well? When you try what happens? Do you get any error messages?
