Transferring Everything From 32bit comp To 64bit comp

Q: Transferring Everything From 32bit comp To 64bit comp

I have a 32bit comp, W7 Ult, 1TB HD and I would like to clone that onto a comp that is a 64bit. HD is the same capacity, question is, can this process be done? Will the programs from the 32bit work in the 64bit comp.? I'm thinking of using Acronis True Image Home 2011.I was given a newer desktop minus the HD and was going to retire my old desktop and I wanted what was on the old comp(32bit) transfered to the new (64bit) tower. Thanx in advance for any advice.

Preferred Solution: Transferring Everything From 32bit comp To 64bit comp

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Transferring Everything From 32bit comp To 64bit comp

You can't do it.
64-bit has to be a clean installation.
You can transfer your data, but all programs have to be reinstalled.

I have purchased a new laptop with Win7 64bit pre-install. It is replacing my old XP Pro 32bit laptop. What do I need to do to transfer files and programs from the older XP Pro 32 bit laptop to the new Win-win 64 bit laptop? Thanks

A:Transferring from XP Pro 32bit to Win7 64bit

You can install all the programs you already have in XP into the new laptop, and transfer your files with a USB dongle. The 32 bit programs from XP will be gathered under the folder of c: program files (x86) in the new laptop.

My mom wants to put the new journey CD on her ipod.
MY itunes is set up on a laptop (Windows 7) that has a CD drive while the itunes synced to her ipod is on a laptop( Windows XP) that only has USB ports.

This is what I've tried:
1)At first, I was using a burned CD, because that was what was conveniently available to me. I put the CD into my computer, went to My Computer, copied the files from "DVD RW Drive" to my Flash drive. It shows up as Track 1, Track 2, etc.
***I would have copied and pasted from windows media where it had the names of the songs listed, but it doesn't give you an option (even right clicking) to copy.
Then I put the flashdrive in to the USB of the other laptop, connected her ipod, and oped Itunes. I then went to "File", "Add Folder to Library" and chose the appropriate folder from my flashdrive. Nothing showed up in the Itunes library.
I thought maybe it was because it was coming off a removable disk so I copy and pasted the files into a folder on the desktop, repeated the process and got the same result.
**I did this several times.
2)I thought maybe it was because I had a copy of the CD, so I tried again with the original CD. Same thing.

Help???

A:Transferring Music from one comp. to another

You don't want an audio CD for transfers, just a data CD. So either choose data CD in options if you can, or use an ordinary burning app to burn the files. They should look the same on the CD as they do on your machine for the transfer and not be divided into tracks.

Another good burner is:

Infra Recorder

It works well on most machines without conflicting with anything.

How many files are you looking to transfer, mb's or gigabytes worth?

Ever looked into getting a cheap flash thumb/pen drive? I've found that to be one of the easiest ways to transfer files between computers.

Hi, hope this is in the right place.

I have a desktop pc using windows xp sp2 and my son has just bought a laptop with vista and msworks suite 8.5 preinstalled on it. He has moved word docs over to his laptop from the desktop pc but some will not open, others will. These documents would have been created in msword 2003. Has it anything to do with the fact that he only has msworks word processor and not msoffice word and if so, is there a way around transferring these docs to his laptop and making them work. Thanks for reading and in advance for any help offered.

Save them as RTF on the desktop and then transfer them.
RTF is a format that is most common to the different word processors and should lose little of the formatting.

Hello everyone. I hope this is an easy answer, and I suspect it will be so.

I was tasked with buying and setting up a new computer for a family friend, who is considerably older and only needed the new computer for Solitaire, email usage, and internet usage.

The person in question's current computer, which is at least 10 years old, is running Windows XP and he uses Outlook Express for his email. Now, I know that Outlook Express ended at XP. So - my questions:

1. Do I just need to download Windows Live Mail, and that's the current replacement for Outlook?
2. How would I add his Outlook Express email account to Windows Live Mail?

If I could get a brief idea of what I'll be in for when I set up the email, I'd really appreciate it. I got the computer today and already got started with program installation and whatnot. I'll be seeing him on Friday to physically set up the computer; I'm trying to get everything completely done software-wise before I need to go over there.

Thank you in advance!!

A:Transferring email from Outlook Express on XP to a new Windows 7 comp?

I'm not sure Live Mail (if it is still around at all) would be the best choice for someone accustomed to Outlook Express.

You might want to look at Thunderbird from Mozilla. It can be configured to pretty much resemble OE.

Does this person want to import old saved emails from OE into the new email app that you choose? That can be quite a chore and will likely be confusing and frustrating. I got it done eventually, but it wasn't pleasant.

Going from memory, you should be prepared to MANUALLY enter address book info for people he likes to email with---rather than try to import it using some type of transfer or import function. For reasons i don't understand, switching email clients is still a major pain--stuck in the dark ages--no improvements since the 1990s the last I checked.

But if there is nothing to be carried forward other than the old email address, it's pretty easy. You'd just have to enter configuration info into the email app configuration just as he did at some time in the past with Outlook Express---account settings, server settings per his ISP, folder setup, etc.

3. IE Spyad w/ Zoned Out
4. PC pitstop driver alert

6. ATF Cleaner
7. PC Pitstop Driver Alert

If I install almost all of the reputable spyware removers and system optimizers, etc. on my comp, will it slow down my system? Will there be any negative consequences?

A:Newbie questions. Will anti-spyware, etc. slow down comp? Best way to optimize comp?

As a rule, you use:
1 firewall
1 antivirus
* Norton is not the best program around, and it's a resource hog, but since you bought it, you'll have to live with it until it expires.
* Using more then one of each is asking for problems (conflict).
As for antispyware programs, you can have as many, as you want, however, I wouldn't use more then 2 as startups, since you want fast computer.
Your computer specs look very good, but the lower number of startups, the better (this is another thing to check).
As for antispyware, I'd keep Spyware Blaster as a startup program, and I'd add a-squared: http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/free/
You may want to run others, you have once in a while, or when any problem arises.

In addition, you want to keep your computer clean of garbage, and for that purpose, you want to get CCleaner: www.ccleaner.com

Once a month, you want to run defrag. I recommend free jkDefrag: http://www.kessels.com/JkDefrag/ instead of Windows defrag.

That's about it. If you have more questions, please, ask.

Hey Guys,

I just got what I thought was a dank comp, but it is soo choppy playing COD4, even on med-low settings...

I have a Intel T9400 processor(2.53 GHz, 1066fsb, 6mb cache), with 4 Gigs of DDR3 and a Radeon 3650 HD 512 mb video card. I expected to dom but stuff is working differently that I thought... I think it may be a problem with vista home premium 64bit, and lenovo's been mildly helpful. Any suggestions are extreeeemly extreeemly appreciated.

Ride Strong haha,

Benjy

A:COD4 problem, New Comp or Vista 64bit?

First of all, you should never expect a laptop to be amazing at games, especially new games. They are not designed for serious gaming, no matter what the manufacturer says.

Now, the problem you're having is most likely a driver issue. Download the latest drivers for your video card here, and see if it works any better.

Don't expect to be able to play the game on high settings - even a desktop version of the HD 3650 can't do it.

I want to be able to print from my XP Computer to the Vista computer in the other room, wirelessly.

XP Home

New, Shared Printer

Printer on the Vista computer is "shared"...I don't know anything about networks
I use control panel: "add a printer" -> "A network printer" -> "Browse for printers" -> it shows some sort of window with icons that don't really mean much to me:

One category is called "Workgroup" and when I click it, the Vista name of the computer in the other room shows up, but nothing happens when I double click that. I connected to a wireless printer a long time ago this way when one was connected to an XP computer, and the actual name of the printer would show up.

Does anyone know how to do it?

I've got an annoying problem I'm trying to smooth out. On my 3-computer LAN, I've got network shares set up on all three comps. (Not homegroup; not public folders; those aren't workable for my situation.)

On my main work computer ("Comp A") (Win 7 Home Premium), whenever I open the sharelist on either "B" or "C", I have the extreme pleasure of waiting 8-10 seconds before the shares on the requested machine are presented.

Other than that, the shares work perfectly, except for the annoying delay every time I want to use Comp A to open the list of shares on Comp B or Comp C.

What I'm sharing: My user directory on each comp. (I'm the only user on this 3-node LAN.) Sharing with Homegroup or Public Folders isn't feasible.

When the delay happens: Courtesy of Wireshark, I've learned that when the delay occurs, it occurs after "Negotiate Protocol Response" and before "Session Setup Request".

I'm also getting the same delay behavior on one other computer (Comp C), but only when accessing the share list Comp A. Here's the specific run-down...

Computer A
Windows 7 Home Premium
Hard-Wired
8-second delay opening shares on Comp B and Comp C.
Computer B
Windows 7 Ultimate
Hard-wired
No delay opening shares on Comp A or Comp C
Computer C

I recently set up a workgroup called "workgroup" so that my two PC's could share files.

The XP comp is called Qing, and can access the workgroup and log onto the linux server called Han (running Fedora 6 with Samba) . Once logged onto Han from Qing, I can see the shared folder, but when i try to access it I get the following message:

"\\Han\share is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The network path was not found."

On Han, the linux comp, I have set up a shared folder called "share" with full permissions.
I have enabled NetBIOS over TCP/IP and rebooted and still no luck,
I have searched the internet and these forums for a similar problem but was unable to find anything that I could use.

Any help would be great!

thanks

Ok, I just bought a Gateway E-155 tablet online and it came with the Vista Ultimate 32 & 64bit CDs. The person who I purchased it from said it was already installed and ready to go. When I received the laptop today, I turned it on and it said no OS installed.

I went through the procedures and arrived at the 'where do you want to install Windows' part of installation which, of course, had no HD to choose from. After researching the topic it seems that this is a common problem. I decided to go to Gateway.com and downloaded all the drivers and unzipped them and put them onto a USB drive and tried to 'slipstream' them into a Windows XP install and still it said 'no drivers found'. Then I found a post that suggested going to Intel and obtaining the SATA/RAID driver. After putting that onto the USB, tried it again and it finally found a file (ICH7M/MDH SATA AHCI Controller) but after it attempted to use it, said that still no driver was found.

One person suggested going into the BIOS and turning the 'RAID' on, but I saw nothing of it on the SATA settings and so I adjusted those settings, each one followed by reattempting to find the drivers... nothing...Well, here is what it says in the BIOS under boot priority... it contains...

1.IDE ODD: HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-U10N-(
2.SATA HDD:
3.PCI DEV: IBA GE Slot 0200 v1232
Any suggestions greatly appreciated!!! Thanks!!!!!

Hi Zae88

When you try to install your operating system, there was no hardrives available to choose from, is this correct? And when you selected the option to install drivers for your hardrives in the vista installation wizard it failed to do so?

My dad has expensive construction software that he needs on a day to day basis, but his laptop is dying and very slow. Currently his laptop runs Vista x86, and I wanted to give him my laptop that runs 7 x64. Could I swap the hard drives so that its an easy transition, or would that not work? Thanks for any input and suggestions.

A:Hard drive from one comp work in another comp like it did before?

"his laptop is dying and very slow"

that might mean his hard drive is bad, or that he has too many programs/malware installed, in which case you would not want to put his drive in your laptop.

But to answer your question, it depends on how different the chipset drivers are between the two machines. But if you have the win7 x64 install dvd, you should be able to do a repair install if windows is not able to boot after switching hard drives.

Hi.
I just got my new laptop and I am trying to transfer files from old computer to it. I tried to set up a home network by following the wizard. When I go to My Network Places from my new computer, nothing shows. I tried pressing the View Workgroup computers button from there and all I got was:

"Home not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions."

What should I do?

A:Network Problem. New comp can't access old comp.

Create a file in notepad named FIXANON.REG with the following contents:

------------------- Use text after this line -------------------
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa]
"restrictanonymous"=dword:00000000
------------------- Use text before this line -----------------

Double click on the file and say Yes to the merge into registry question.

If that doesn't do it, let's follow these basic debug steps.

Turn off any firewalls for debugging. If the firewall is the problem, you'll have to configure it to allow access to "trusted zone" addresses. Note that some firewalls must be completely uninstalled to stop them from affecting your networking.

PING each computer by IP address, and if successful, PING by name. You can obtain the IP address of a computer by opening a command prompt (DOS window) and typing IPCONFIG. This should work for any Windows version. A failure here needs to be corrected before you go any farther.

Check your Services are Started on all PCs: Workstation, DHCP Client, DNS Client, Server, TCP/IP Netbios helper, Computer Browser.

All computers should be in the same workgroup for computer browsing to function properly. File & Print Sharing has to be enabled on any computer you wish to share files or printers from. You also need to actually share the resource in question from My Computer, right click on the drive/printer/folder, and select sharing.

Well this is my first post. I am a fledgling hobbyist at this computer thing and I got this lil comp from my friend for free. It was working great and I was really enjoying checking emails and listening to music on it while browsing the webernet. Two days ago I encountered a virus on the comp while installing some pirated (eeek) software. Needless to say I got my due! The comp rebooted... or I rebooted -I am still hazy on it- and I could not find my taskbar and it looked like half of my desktop icons had been moved down the screen. I tried to move them but nothing worked and I also tried to recover the taskbar using ctrl-esc. Anyway I found your website and someone suggested using DR Web and AVG spyware as well as Smitfraudfix I did all of this and still nothing has changed. Hello there, I recently upgraded my comp by replacing mobo, graphics, ram, cpu
pretty much the lot except for my hdd and cd drive.
the problem is now it wont boot and keeps restarting, it gets to the windows logo and then goes to a blue screen for half a sec then restarts. i have windows 7 and even the repair tool doesnt help with the problem.
ether my hdd has had it (i have had it for a while now) or there is a issue with my new ram?
could this be a compatability issue or a fault?

i have tried the windows 7 repair tool but comes up saying cant fix problems. tried restarting from a earlier time, and iv also tried to boot from the windows 7 disk but it just freezes so i can boot or install.

can anyone help me try and get this new beast of a comp up and running ???

Hi,

Recently had a virus on my computer. Had to take it to the geek squad to get it fixed. Brought it home the other day and it would not connect to my wireless network (I am on the other laptop in my house that does still connect). It would connect before I got it "fixed". I brought it back to the store the next day and they tried a few things. I will connect to their wireless in the store.

I originally had Geek Squad come out earlier this year to set up my wireless router and the guy who helped me at the store said it might be because of a certain way he set my computer up to connect to the router which got erased when my computer had to be restored.

Now they want to charge me an extra $89 for them to come back out to the house and fix it.

Is there anything I can do to try to fix this myself without forking over even more money?

I just got a new computer with Windows 7.

My old computer has Windows XP on it.

I need to get all my old saved Incredimail mail from my old computer to my new one.

I just dont know how.

Here is what I have done so far...

Installed Incredimail on my new computer with Win 7.

I then looked online to find out where the back up files for Incredimail emails are and found them on my Win XP comp. I then downloaded that file to a flash drive thinking I could find the same file on my computer with Win 7.

The pathways are supposed to be:

C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\Application Data\IM\Identities\
or
C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\Local Settings\Application Data\IM\Identities\

I was able to find the second one on my XP Computer. But when I went to transfer the file to my Win 7 Computer, I could not find the appropriate folder. There IS no Documenst and Settings. Nor is there a an IM or Identities folder.

What do I do?

I REALLY need to have these old messages. There is some very important info I need to have.

Thanks!

A:32bit to 64bit

Hello Stew,

If you had a retail Vista installation disk, then yes without a problem. However, it depends on what type of OEM installation disk you have. If it is a OEM Vista Recovery disc, then it will not work. If it is an express installation disc, then you might be able to.

64-bit media should have been included in the box with the retail Windows Vista Ultimate though. You can also order a replacement 64-bit from here as well for just S&H.

Windows Vista Alternate Media

Hope this helps some,
Shawn

what is up with the 64 bit processors? they are so so so expensive, its like 1000$ for a 2.6 ghz one, how would this 2.6 64-bit compare to a 2.6 32-bit?

A:64bit vs 32bit

64bit?

64bit processors have the ability to run 64 bit operating systems(i.e. windows xp pro 64bit), and use 64 bit applications. 64 bit allows more system memory, among other things. Yeah the fx55 amd is over $1000 and is "only" 2.6ghz. But it is the fastest cpu in existance right now, so that "justifies" it's price. It beats an intel 3.8ghz. A 64bit 1.8ghz cpu, which is equivalent to a p4 3ghz is about $150. Not that expensive, and way cheaper than intel's new 64 bit chips.
