I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have a Dell Inspiron E1505 and I have been on here before to try to get it fixed and I pretty sure it is past the point of fixing so I am going to get a new one but I was wondering if there is anyway to get it to go on to get my important files off of there. It is stuck in a restart loop so i cannot get it to the main screen. I just have some many pictures and other things off of there I need. If someone could help me out I would appreciate it. I know I have a few viruses that have infected my cd drive and everything else we tried reformating it last time but that did not even help. Thanks!

A:Help getting stuff off my computer

<<I know I have a few viruses that have infected my cd drive and everything else we tried reformating it last time but that did not even help.>>

Well...that bothers me. If you reformatted the hard drive...that should have taken care of malware...so I don't know exactly what you did.

Assuming that there are no malware concerns and the hard drive has no problems...the easiest way to move data files would be simply to connect the hard drive as a secondary drive to any system...and move desired data files to another system, another drive, or removeable media.

When doing that, you will probably have to take ownership of any files which are included under Docs/Settings (My Docs, My Music, etc.).

I'm new so don't know if this is the correct area to ask this, but I have too much "stuff" on my computer and would like someone to tell me what and how to delete safely. I am using a Dell Dimension 3000, Windows XP and everything keeps "locking up." One of the main problems I have is that I had a free virus program (EZArmour) and it expired. I tried to download another free one, and it said that I couldn't because McAfee was still on it. I looked for McAfee in my programs, but couldn't find it. Then I proceeded to try to download 3 or 4 other free virus programs and now none will run, they all are causing the others to lock up and I have a real problem. I am a photographer and do a lot of photo editing, so don't want anything related to this deleted, but I would like to just have all the "crap" taken off and someone to tell me what free program I can use that is good and won't cause things to lock up.

I have run a Hijack file and am posting it below. I appreciate any help you can give me.

I was playing a Flash game with my son recently when I had about 30 little windows pop up as my Firefox closed. All of my icons were hidden and a fake Windows Virus Removal program began to run. Improved Dell Dimension 3000, with better graphics card, different motherboard. 512mb ram, 3GHz processor

I recently removed some stuff which got into the computer. This was 3 little icons in the running programs tray (in the bottom right hand corner of the screen - cant remember the proper name.) All i had to do was go into Add/Remove programs, and it was there. However, one icon still remains. It looks like a red circle, with a black circle inside that, then inside the black circle there is a yellow exclaimation mark. It occasionally pops up saying "your system is infected" or "critical system error" or something like that, and even if i close the speech bubble, it still links me to some website which may or may not have anything to do with virus protection.

This problem doesnt show up on either of my anti-virus programs (AVG free and Ad-Aware)

So first of all let me be detailed as possible. I leave my computer on 24/7. I do this very often and i leave for a few days at a time with no problems. I left it for 2 days this past week and just got home last night. My monitor had a blackscreen and wouldn't respond to anything so i reset my computer. When my computer came back it first had the error of my computer has changed very much and i must re-register windows. But it wouldnt do it via normal boot so i had to do it in safe mode. and i ran very slowly.

I solved that problem and when i went back into normal boot my sound wouldnt work so i found the driver for that and fixed that then i got a random unknown thing for a psedo device which got solved by downloading a driver from my motherboard cd.

Then i went through and upgraded the drivers for a few things that were very outdated and installed a xp security patch that microsoft decided i needed.

Now the problem is my computer is running very slow and Firefox won't open up at all windows explorer which i barely ever use works ok it doesn't seem to be having any problems.

Here is my dream which I know will never happen but I want to try again. I never want to give MS another nickle of my cash. I want to create a computer that I can run Windows on when I have to, and use a flavor of linux for as much of my computing as I can.

You may think that this is easy but my experience is that once windows writes to c:\ the install begins to degrade. I can partition drives and such and have run multiple copies of windows (but now I wonder if I was nuts). I can do most things with a computer with direction.

I would also willingly give up MOST of the fake out MULTITASKING that windows claims to do but really doesn't. I just would rather finish a task that have windows running around splitting task up and then not doing any of them correctly.

I am working up a plan for the lay out of my computer, finding needed drivers for linux, and figuring out what to keep and what to trash.

I think the first thing that I need to do is figure out exactly what I am working with. I like PRINTED MATERIAL because I have to refer back to it often. So with that in mind I ask you the following:

How can I get a list of the following on my computer that is running Win XP:
The make and model number of my computer
A list of all the Windows stuff like updates and SP in use
A list of all programs on my computer
A list of the hardware on this computer
A list or print out of the settings on this computer
Any other list you think might be handy to have

Thank you.

Configure Ad-aware like this and then scan.

Make sure you have all the Critical Updates and Service Packs from http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com

***

Get, install, update and run free Ad-aware (and its HexDump plug-in) from http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/

First in the main window look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now and download the latest reference files.

Make sure the following settings are made and on -------ON=GREEN

From main window :Click Start then Activate in-depth scan (recommended)

Click Use Custom Scanning Options' then click Customize' and have these options selected: Under Drives and Folders put a check by Scan Within Archives and below that under Memory and Registry put a check by all the options there.

Now click on the General button in that same window make the button 'red' next to, 'Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal; Automatically save log file should be green and Safe Mode should be green.' Under the the Tweak button , Under Scanning engine select: Unload recognized processes during scanning and under Cleaning Engine select: Let windows remove files in use at next reboot.

Click proceed to save your settings.

Now to scan just click the Next button.

When the scan is finished mark everything for removal and get rid of it.(Right-click the window and choose select all from the drop down menu and click Next)

I already used disk cleanup to clean up my computer of junk. But is it possible to delete even more unnecessary files? I heard that after installing Win 10 that there are some installation files that can be further deleted. Do let me know.

A:Can I Delete More Stuff from My Computer??

Yes, leftover installation files and logs, error reports, dump-files, earlier updates that have been superseded and previous restore points can all be deleted using Disk Clean-Up - but only if you click its 'Clean up system files' button.

To delete all but the latest restore point, look on the 'More options' tab in Disk Clean-Up. This can release several GB of used space.

Depending on what Disk Clean-Up finds, you may see 'windows update clean-up' and 'previous versions of windows' (if you've just done an upgrade) listed. These will not be ticked by default. You have to deliberately select them. Note that if you delete the old windows version you won't be able to roll back any more.

The caches for Edge and IE will be cleaned up under 'temporary internet files', but if you use other browsers it can't clean them. You have to go into the browser itself and use its own options to clear its cache.

Another stupid question from me

I just got a new laptop because my old one had a hardware problem that was completely unsolvable. Now, I have to upload all my files (about 20GB) from my desktop computer to my laptop using just a 4GB thumb drive and transfering 3 1/2 GB at a time.

Question is, how can I be sure my stuff on my desktop is completely clean? Would just a scan with Malwarebytes do on the desktop before throwing stuff on the thumb? I ask because my sister used my desktop over the week for some ridiculous MySpace game (that she just had to do, almost like a junkie needing a fix. Who uses Myspace anymore?) and she disabled Firefox Adblock and NoScript just 'cuz and I found some tracking cookies that wouldn't of been there if she didn't disable things.

Also, is there a faster way to do this than with a small thumb drive without buying a larger thumb drive or external drive? The desktop runs XP and the Laptop runs 7. It'll take at least two hours to move all this and make several trips back and forth with the thumb.

All i want is a computer that plays videogames well, doesnt need to be perfect or over the edge, just look nice and play nice.

My vid card only takes AGP and PCI no PCI-E, I currently found the ram i want to buy so thats out of the way, so i need to concentrate on a videocard but now it says i may need a higher PSU but i dont know what to get or what to do what is a nice agp video card that runs nicely and a nice PSU to buy to go along with it? Incase you need to know my comp is a gateway model 510 2009447

A:This computer upgrade stuff is B.S

Choices for an agp card are getting somewhat slim. Here is a 2600pro that should do the job for you. As far as a pw supply, this FPS unit would be fine.

Hello all,

I have some pop ups that started showing up on my computer after being clicking on a link to a questionable site. Now, my homepage has changed to some search screen (similiar to google), I have a few new entries in my favorites list that I can't get rid of, and it's a royal pain in the butt. Here is my HJT log. Hopefully someone might walk me through what to do.

Thank you all in advance.

I got a brand new computer. it has a amd dual core processor, gig of ram and all the stuff that should make this thing soar. Im not using nearly any memory. i turned off my firewall but i still get a freeze when my download starts and completes. i have a problem with streaming media player based streams and all kinds of little twitches. It takes like 30 seconds to save a picture. Im runnin a real version of xp. using firefox as a browser, using ad munch, spysweeper, and trend micro pc cillin.

A:Very new computer slow at stuff

What firewall did you turn off?

0 > when did the problem seem to be begin? Have you ever tried using System Restore to correct it?
1 > is it very slow to boot up?
2 > do programs open slowly?
3 > does the same behavior occur both offline and on?
4 > does it matter how long the system has been on, and does a restart improve things?

Slow performance issues can often be due to overheating, so if the system is faster after it has been shutdown for a while and then restarted -- that would be especially suspect. To check for possible problems here, shutdown, open the case and blow out any accumulated dust. Then turn it
on and check to see that the fan is working. Sometimes it helps to physically clean the fan.

If a laptop, check to see that the vent is clear of dust and verify the fan is working. Temps and fan speed can usually be monitored with SpeedFan (except on Dell desktops), a free utility.

5 > if you do a ctrl-alt-del, do any processes show excess cpu usage, other than System Idle Process?

6 > If you open the Device Manager (run devmgmt.msc) and select the entry for IDE ATA/Atapi and select the Primary IDE > Advanced Settings, does it say the "current transfer mode" is DMA or PIO?

If it says PIO, first ensure "Use DMA if Available” is selected, then select the driver tab and uninstall the driver and reboot. Then check again.

My "mouse" acts like it has a mind of it's own. All of a sudden it will, after i move it go all over and "things" like the clock, or whatever will "pop" up. I don't open attachments from people I don't know, and really don't "surf" the internet much. I found something that looked strange in c drive. Ihave avg free, but it didn't pick up anything, but seems like it just scans part of the computer.

Anyway there was something called country pickers that I could not uninstall. I found that the following was put on the computer on 4-29-06 1PHPH, 1kb PHfile on the next lines were flastun.ffl FFL file then another line ffastun0.ffx FFXfile, next line ffastun.ffa FFA on the next line ffastun.ffo FFO. Using word pad to open the 1PHPH said it was Country Pickers03. I don't have a clue what that is.

1. I was going to try to delete the items I mentioned. However, I didn't know if that was something important to the operation of the computer, is it?

2. Is this the thing that's causing the problem.

3. I don't even remember being on the internet or doing anything with the computer at the time these programs or whatever got on C drive.
Thanks for any help!!!

Hi,

I am running windows 7 on my own personal laptop. Recently I've noticed that certain actions are denied (requiring admin rights)... but I am the only admin user on the PC (confirmed when I look in user accounts) so I don't understand this.
For e.g. when I try uninstalling dropbox I get the following message:
"Dropbox was previously installed by an administrator; upgrading requires administrator rights"
Or I just tried deleting a directory from within Matlab and got a similar message.

Any ideas?
Thanks for any help

So here's my deal.
Somehow I got two Windows Xp on my computer. I don't know how but I am able to choose which one to go to when the cpu starts up. The top one I usually use for the internet and misc. while I use the bottom one for video editting. It has worked for me just fine for almost 2 years. I have had minimal problems.
But, just the other day I was restarting my computer the appropriate way to log onto my other windows. The next thing I know my monitor doesn't even read the fact that it should be turned on. The monitor acted like it was in sleep mode. I fiddled with the wires and restarted both the monitor and cpu a few times. The monitor would said there was nothing plugged in for a breif second and then go back to sleep mode. I finally decided to give it a while and turned it all off.
I came back a day later and turned it on and everything was working fine. I decided to resart and get on my other windows and the same damn thing happened. I turned it off and came back an hour later and got on the Windows I wanted to get on and it acted just fine. It wasn't but about 10 minutes into and the cpu completely froze up. I restarted and went back to that same windows and it took about 20 minutes before it froze again. I restarted yet another time and then the monitor did the thing again where it slept.
So today I brought a different monitor in to make sure it wasn't the monitor. Thankfully, it's not beacuse it did the same thing. Now within... Read more

Before you go any further, I'd suggest throwing your hard drive in a friends computer and backing up your stuff. I'm thinking it could be a heat problem, at least to start. When it goes into sleep mode, do the fans still run? Do you have a PC speaker in your case, does it make any noise? Try and download the drivers you are missing and drop them in when you hook it up to a friends computer. This is just a shot in the dark however, it could be a hardware issue...

Thanks!

A:Getting rid of unwanted stuff on computer.

I would recommend Ccleaner. It works well at deleting your temp files and even cleaning out your registry. Beware of touching your registry though as it's usually not worth the risk.

The temp cleaning portion of this utility is fantastic though!

Okay, so I'm trying to put in some upgrades but I'm stuck. Not sure if I'm just doing something wrong of I have some defective products. I got a new mobo, cpu, ram and dvd drive and just keeping the old hard drive. Here's the new stuff specs:

Motherboard
Biostar A785G3 Socket AM3

CPU
AMD Athlon II X2 260 3.2 Ghz

RAM
Centon 2GB DDR3-1333

DVD Drive
Lite On SATA 24X Internal

Well I hook up everything and get nothing on the display. The board has VGA and DVI but I got nothing on two different monitors. I had the same thing happen on a different mobo and returned it thinking it was a video problem but now I'm thinking it's a RAM or CPU problem. The new board has IDE and SATA connections and the old HD is IDE but I don't think that matters yet because I don't get a POST beep. I started it with and without the HD connected. I should at least get a no hard drive connected screen but still nothing. I think the board is recognizing the RAM because I started it without the RAM in and got the constant beeps indicating no RAM installed. However, I don't have any other boards taking DDR3 to be sure.

If I were to buy a notebook computer, could I make an image of the hard drive on my desktop and then format the hard drive of the new computer and put the image of my desktop hard drive on the notebook so both would be the same? Or are there some legal ramifications to this?

A:Solved: Transferring stuff to a new computer

Its not legal, very few software allow you have it installed on two different systems. Each computer needs its own software unless the software states it can be used on multiple computers, some has a provision that it can be on a Desktop PC and a Laptop as long as both are not used at the same time.

Aside from that Windows doesn't like to be moved from one computer to another, it rarely boots up on the new hardware without a blue screen and requires much work to get it working properly if at all.

However, I noticed that in the same folders these zipped files got put into, were also loads of pictures which havent been downloaded, such as friends of mine's facebook profile photo, and random other stuff like that - does it seem something is pulling this info and saving it (for whatever reason). Hey guys. I hope I've posted this topic into the right forum.

I've ordered a new computer, and I'm looking for tips in terms of improving security. I use Avast Internet Security, Malware Bytes, Spybot S&D (Immunizations which come with it as well), Firefox 10 with Adblock+, Noscript, Web of Trust, and "warn me when pages try to redirect" checked in FF's configuration. I hear peerblock is good? Should I use that too?

Besides just not going on stupid sites which are rated red on WoT, do you have any other tips I can use to improving my new computer's security?

Also, I'm going to be creating a dual boot between W7 and Linux MINT. Should I need to use an anti-virus of any sort on MINT? And can I scan for Windows viruses while in MINT mode? Like say my external HDD gets infected with Windows malware. Can I remove it safely while in Linux MINT? (And thus, preventing infection because the chances of Linux being infected is minimal?)

Also, the ABSOLUTE first thing I'll be doing is creating a recovery CD. I've created a recovery CD before using bigger DVDs, but now I only have DVDs which are about 500mb each. Does creating a recovery CD typically require them to be larger? I have MANY 500mb cds, compared to the 4 already used 2gb DVDs.

Speaking of which, can I install Linux MINT through those smaller CDs as well?

And, if under the worst case scenario I must use the Recovery CD to restore factory settings, will it also affect my data... Read more

So a standard DVD is needed. They do have a smaller version without the extras that will fit on a normal CD.And, if under the worst case scenario I must use the Recovery CD to restore factory settings, will it also affect my data on Linux? We will need the manufacturer name to confirm it, but likely no. So to start the story, my sister downloaded some program that was doing all sorts of bad stuff to her computer (It was one of those ads that says you have viruses, click here to download a program that will take them away! and she got more...). Through google searching, she found out that malware bits (i think that's it?) is a program that removes it, so she downloaded it on her laptop, and ran it on her desktop via task manager and my help and fixed that.

The very next day she was having trouble with her internet and tried re-installing her network card driver. For the past month and a half or so, her computer has been inactive because it kept shutting down with some error. She gave me the computer yesterday and I figured out she had the wrong driver installed, so I reinstalled the driver and things seemed to be working fine. As I shut down the computer, I'm first brought to this blue screen:

BAD_POOL_CALLER
blahblahblah

Technical Information:

***STOP: 0XC2 (0X07, 0XCD4, 0X009DFEF0, 0XEEAF8CD8)

After restarting the computer the next day, I now come up to just a blank desktop (I can see the background image, but no icons, taskbar, etc.) whether I'm in safe mode or not. I can still access task manager but when I try to pull up explorer.exe, I get a svchost.exe error.

I'm posting this from my laptop and I have my sister's desktop setup next to me. Can anyone help me?

TIA!
