Windows 7 Activation

Q: Windows 7 Activation

Hi

I work for local goverment. We bought several PCs with Windows 7 but had them rolled back to XP for deployment.

We paid for the Windows 7 OS, and additionaly a license for the XP that was loaded. So, several of us took the Windows 7 CD that came with the new laptops and installed it on our current laptops. But it won't activate. It says the product key is incorrect.

No product key came with the software, I assume it's embedded some how in the software, but it seems impossible that it would know the laptop it came with from Dell.

Does anyone know about this? It's all valid, nothing shady going on, just loaded a purchased version of Windows 7. There is no product key on the packaging or on the computer it shipped with.

thanks

Preferred Solution: Windows 7 Activation

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi there
I recently changed a MOBO from an INTEL based one to one using an AMD PHENOM processor -- W7 didn't want any new activation rather surprisingly. (Broken Mobo and I had a spare ASUS MOBO lying around).

However the first time I switched to using a LAN cable instead of a Wifi USB adapter I got the "Hardware has changed - please activate windows. OK it activated fine -- however seems strange to me that a MOBO change didn't call for any activation (Disks, memory, DVD device etc were canaballized from the old machine) but a simple switch from Wifi to a LAN did. !!! The internal logic of the activation process seems totally illogical and bizarre. (Running W7 x-64 ULTIMATE). !!!

Cheers
jimbo

I recently performed a system recovery because I was unable to back up to earlier time before we started having computer issues. Anyway I performed a recovery. Stumbled accross this by accident that windows has 3 days before it wall automatically activate. So I clicked activate. It gave me this message header. "The Windows Vista Home Premium product key you typed is invalid for windows activation". There are 3 options. 1 is to Buy a new product key online. 2 is to type a different product key. 3 is to contact Hewlett-Packard Company to resolve this issue. I contacted Hewlett-Packard Company and they had me call Microsoft. Microsoft wants to charge me $100 for something I already own. Very confused. Anyway does anyone have a fix for this. Thank you

A:Windows Vista Home Premium product key you typed is invalid for windows activation

Hi
You have two choices:
You may either reinstall using the recovery partition, if you have one.
or
You could look for the key on the computer. It can be anywhere, including the battery compartment, if you have a lappy.
As a last restort you can try to use magic jelly bean, but I have doubts since you reinstalled.

Hi Gents,

Hope someone can help me here. I've been using a retail version of Win7 Home premium 64 for about 2 years now with no issues.

During that time I've reinstalled the product possibly 6 or 8 times. Excessive I know but when things start to go wrong I like to start fresh again. Anyway from memory the last 2 times I have had to use phone activation.

A couple of weeks ago I dropped my laptop and killed the HDD. Put in a new one and reinstalled Win. I've just tried to activate with no luck. I went to phone activation and being lazy I typed in my old code I had saved from last time.

Now I can't activate and when I try and open the phone activation box I get a pop up from the toolbar saying the copy isn't genuine and nothing more.

Is there a way to resolve this or have I pissed off the activation so much that I actually have to shell out for a new copy?

Thanks in advance and I'm located in Thailand if that makes a difference.

I was thinking of reactivating online , but am wary of further messing up the install . I have not registered the product yet , Had a look at the Acronis register page ( they tell you Not recommended to access the page) ? Any ideas with this one ? options uninstall , reinstall? Try activate online? Anyone experienced this problem?

I just completely reformatted my computer after a suspected malware attack.
The first thing I tried after reformatting and doing a clean install of Windows 7 Professional 64 bit edition was to run windows update. I received the error code 80072EFD. This is before I installed any software, firewalls, or antivirus programs. I also get this same error when trying to activate windows or office, or when trying to set up Microsoft media center.

I have been in contact with microsoft, but nothing has worked so far. I thought I would see if anyone here had any ideas.

Here are the troubleshooting steps I have already done. Please read through these before posting as you can see I have already tried a lot of things!

3. Adding windows update websites to the internet explorer exceptions list: http://*.update.microsoft.com https://*.update.microsoft.com http://download.windowsupdate.com Microsoft Support http://update.microsoft.com https://update.microsoft.com
4. Verifying internet connectivity (internet works fine)
5. Tried it with Windows firewall on and off. No other firewalls are installed.
6. I tried this before any anti-virus was installed. I have since installed AVG free and tried again both with it running and disabled

We purchased a VLK with Software Assurance from a local distributor here my question is what if from their VLSC License the Operating System listed are

10 Windows 7 Professional

We don't want to install Windows 8 as of now to our office and we wanted to retain the Windows 7 Pro and Enterprise as our Operating System. Do we have a problem for Activation if we still insists to used Windows 7 Pro and Enterprise Operating System using the Windows 8 Enterprise 82 Licenses?

Thank you very much

A:Activation Windows 8 Enterprise VLK but wanted to install Windows 7Ent

There is no way you can use a Windows 8 Enterprise licence for anything else than Windows 8 Enterprise. You simply can not activate Windows with a product key belonging to another Windows version and edition.

With those licences you can install and activate 27 25 Windows 7, not a single more.

Hiya,

I am having a problem with my windows 7 home premium 64bit. I wiped my computer to try and get a new graphic card to work( never got it working, gave up and went back to my old graphic card) Since then I have had to wipe my computer a number of times, I kept having to wipe my computer since the same problem kept happening. Which is that my windows will crash and wont work after about 1-2mins after start up.

I thought it was my disk so I installed it from a usb windows installer and has been runnign fine for about 2 weeks until I was free to do the phone activation of my windows, I phoned up the activation after using my computer for a while then after I phoned and it came up genuine (like normal) I went to get a drink befor doing more work and once getting back to my computer I opened a new tab on firefox it was very slow on the internet so I clsoed my browser and tried to reopen it and but it woulnd't open windows has frozen completely so I pressed the restart button on my case and let it boot up and then it wouldn't let me do anything.

Does anyone have any idea of how come my computer seem to freeze and refuse to work once I use the windows phone activation?

A:Windows wont work after using windows 7 home phone activation

What makes you think it is the activation? Did you go click on "Start Button", right click on "Computer" and left click on "Properties"? When the screen comes up scroll down to the right bottom of the screen and you should see a "Genuine Windows Logo". If it says something different then there is an activation problem.

I have a very specific question that i can not find an answer.

I bought a new pc and i want to buy Windows 10 Pro. I have found a very good price for a Windows 7 Pro license which will give me a free upgrade to Windows 10 Pro.

I will have the key in the following days but the pc is assembled and ready.

(1)Can i clean install Windows 10 Pro and activate it with the windows 7 pro key that has never been activated even for a windows 7 machine or
(2)should i first install windows 7 pro, activate it with the key and then clean install windows 10 and activate it with the windows 7 pro key

Thank you.

Hi Trod,
You can install W10 NOW and you dont have to activate it immediately, theres a 30 day grace period.
So when you get your W7 package you can activate it with the product key.
Windows 10 - Clean Install - Windows 10 Forums.

note your purchased W7 pro licence MUST be either System builder or retail or it will not activate

Hello Gaga, and welcome to Vista Forums.

If Vista will not activate online, then you will have no choice but to do a phone activation. However, since you have a OEM Vista and not a retail Vista, you will need to call the OEM (brand of laptop) instead to have it activated. You can check at your laptop manufacturer's website to find out the information you need to contact them.

I hope this helps,

I purchased a Windows PC with Windows 7 Pro installed (OEM version). It's been running fine for two years, then in December Microsoft blocked the activation code on it. I called them, they state it is a miss-assigned product key and has been blocked, I should
take the computer to the place of purchase and get them to provide a valid key.
I took the computer to the shop, they told me it's been blocked through multiple activation's. We've never changed any hardware on the computer since purchase. The shop tells me it could have been a virus that stole the Product ID (I find this hard to believe
as we are incredible careful with the links and websites we visit. The shop basically said you need to purchase a new copy of Windows 10. I know it's not expensive to purchase a new copy, but this hints at a larger issue that is really annoying me. As I have
Microsoft telling me it's not their fault and as it's an OEM version I need to talk to the vendor, meanwhile I have the vendor blaming Microsoft. I'm stuck in the middle with no way to use the computer for work and no spare machine to work from!!!
I don't know what else I can do to get this resolved.

Hello
I have read through this and many other forums in the last two weeks in regards to this issue, I hope this is not a duplicate.
Inspiron 3537 i5 laptop running windows 8 bought from Dell outlet UK in April 2014, certified refurbished. Upgraded to 8.1 straight away and the W10 without issue. Hard drive failed last month, lost everything my daughters laptop, no she didn't make a recovery disk!  I replaced the hard drive, smaller capacity but still SATA 2 and started looking around the forums for solutions for recovery.  I came across a thread here in regards to using  Microsoft  created installation media, which I successfully created to a DVD and installed on my new hard drive. On completion I had a activation problem, although being assured that 8.1 would be activated I was aware that my product key pre installed in the BIOS was W8.  I contacted Microsoft support and was told to contact Dell who informed me that 8.1 would never work and relieved me of £30 and sent  a W8 disk, although annoyed that I am paying for something twice I considered it a type of fine for not creating one.
I clean installed, booted from the DVD, I accepted the licence agreement from Microsoft which thanked me for choosing a pc pre-installed with W8, unfortunately at the end, not activated. I have used these forums and discovered the full key, entering manually, but not recognised probably due to the fact it is not supposed to be entered manually.  I us... Read more

I recently had problems with my computer, and had to replaces my hard drive and memory. I therefore had to install Windows XP again. We have a few computers at home, each of which came with an XP recovery disk. I took one of these (it could have been from another computer - I'm not sure) and installed Windows again. I now have a countdown for my 30 day activation period. My problem is I dont have an internet connection on that computer, and am unable to activate. I researched this online, and the solution seems to be to back up the files wpa.dbl and wpa.bak from my previous sytem and replace them onto the new Windows. However, I only found this out now, and have therefore lost the old files. The old hard drive is corrupt and therefore cant recover them from there. Does anyone know of another solution and can someone provide me with those 2 files? Many thanks.

I bought W7 and installed it on my laptop after saving the W7 beta mig files to a USB. I installed the new W7 and did not get back ANY of my original files, programs, photos etc. ! I am really upset. Now I had HDD problems with my Dell Inspiron 530s so I installed the same W7 on it and had to reactivate PS3 and all of my other programs as they did not transfer from Vista. WHAT A CROCK!!! I talked to support and they said I have 30 days to buy a new key. I went to the MS store and ordered the Family pak for 3 activations for $175, waiting for it to arrive. Today I get a message that I MUST activate today! I called support and she tells me I will lose the current W7 along with all of my newly installed programs. I said I have 3 new keys coming, she said I have to re-install W7 when they arrive to install the new key and then re-install ALL of my programs again! Is this right?????

Let me get this straight...you bought Windows 7 and installed it, it didn't go as expected (Meaning you didn't upgrade as opposed to full install, at least from what I gather), you called support and they told you you had to go and BUY Windows 7 again?

Something doesn't match up with this story....care to elaborate?

Hi chaps,

I bought an AMD Sempron 3000+ with XP PRO 64 bit loaded and having tried to load a few applications gave up for a while. When I switched it on the other day, it now says that Windows requires activation. When you say yes to this a box appears saying that Windows has already been activated and to exit. When exiting from this box, the welcome screen appears and logs off every time with the only option to shutdown or restart. If I can't login how can find the product ID? or even attempt to load Internet software to log in to Microsoft. All I have is a Microsoft Product recovery cd-rom with the Product KEY. Sometimes the product ID is on a sticker on the box, but not in this case. I bought this system on Ebay from a company call the PC Experts Ltd and everything seems above board. They supplied me with the recovery cd and motherboard cd and various manuals. Have I bought a pink elephant? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated thanks.

We have about 30 PC's with embedded BIOS product keys for Windows 7/8.1 (I don't remember which) But I know that if we put a Windows 10 HDD into the same machine and activate it with that BIOS Key it says it's activated. Does that mean that the hardware ID is now registered with Microsoft as a windows 10 Upgrade?

I recently had Windows Vista and my Hard Drive crashed so I installed a new one and reloaded all the original drivers and programs from the recovery disc. I purchased a Windows 7 upgrade and installed it on my laptop and my Desktop which is a 64 Bit system. It seemed to have loaded correctly but noticed yesterday that I got a message that I needed to activate Windows. So I entered the Product Key # and it kept saying that I needed to re-enter or buy a new program. I can't understand why it keeps saying it when I do have the product key. I never got the message on Vista so what is the system not recognizing ? I woud hate to either re-format my system and reload the Vista program and then upgrade again or have to buy another Windows 7 program. Is there an easier way ?

A:Windows 7 activation

You have to purchase another copy of Windows for the computer you can not activate. You will get a new key and you can input that to activate.

Keys are only good for one machine.

Hi all!

I have got another question for you!
I found this one the site where i want to buy W7:

Translation:
Activation of Windows 7 is not possible when it is a different language than the already installed version of Windows. E.G. Dutch Windows Vista to Windows 7 in english is NOT possible.

Activation of Windows 7 is not possible when the bit versions dont match, e.g. 32-bits to 64-bits or the other way round is NOT possible.

The first criterium is nota problem. Vista (dutch) to 7 (dutch), so thats okay!
But, I want to upgrade from 32 bit to 64!
I know the installation is possible (clean install)
But, will I be able to activate my 64 bit Windows 7?!
Please help me!

A:Windows 7 activation!

Yes, your key will work and activate on 32bit or 64bit, just not both at the same time.

So, I installed a copy of Windows XP Home Edition on my desktop, and I got lazy witht eh 30 day activation thing, and wated untill it was too late.
When my 30 days were up, I turned on my computer, and it said "In order to use windows, you must activate it now". So I confirmed that, then the activation window popped up, but it said "Windows is already activated, click OK to close". So I click OK, and then it takes me back to the login screen.

Please help, I kinda need that computer.

I'm buying a new computer tower with no OS installed, but I have XP installed on my current tower. Would it be possible to just tell Microsoft I've upgraded and use the same key and activate successfully. The licence is still stuck to the side of my current computer with the number on.

I have the full installation CD. I realise that it's "tied" to this computer. But when you significantly upgrade hardware, you need to reactivate. So what makes the PC the PC - how much can you upgrade before it becomes a different PC?

Obviously, I'm technically buying a new unit, but how do MS know that?

Simply because, whats the point in buying a whole new XP when vista comes out start of next year.

A:Windows XP Activation - new pc

Hi

Not liking your chances too much

If the current version is on a OEM pc then it will tied to the bios of that motherboard and you will not be able to activate it

If you have a full version bought standalone then you will have to call microsoft at activation as the hardware will be completely different. I don't think they will take too kindly to it.

I just bought "xp" legit, I was intending to install on all (3) of my home network computers. the first install went fine, however on the 2nd install I was unable to activate windows xp. Am I not allowed to put this program on all my computers? If not is there anyway to bypass this activation. $ 99.99 was ok for (3) computers but theres no way I'm going with $99. each. Any ideas?

Sorry to be the bearer of "bad news" , but if you read your EULA you will see it states one liscence one computer, therefore you need and individual copy for each machine.

You have an HP Win7 OEM_SLP Key on an eMachine built well before Windows 7 was released.

You need either to input a genuine Key for Windows7, or reformat and reinstall using the manufacturer's Recovery media for the original OS that was shipped with the PC - probably Vista.

Hey people,

I recently posted a message regarding a laptop of a friend of mine, requesting help.

Now, i wanted to check if the windows 7 were genuine.
So, i went to the validation page of microsoft, I downloaded the program it asked and I run the check. After checking it told me that the windows 7 are genuine.

Thing is, I asked him about it, and he told me that they are pirated. When I asked for more information, he told me that he downloaded a genuine ISO from digitalriver, and skipped the "enter product key" when installing them. Since then, he has been downloading updates etc, without any issues. The only thing he has done is hiding that notorious anti-piracy update from windows update (KB97 something)

Can this really be? Shouldnt the validation check at least ask him to activate the windows?

A:Windows 7 Activation

Might be that he installed it less than 30 days ago by which time(30 dats or something) he would get asked to enter the product key or his windows copy would get shut down.

I installed my copy of 7 ultimate in a virtual machine, been running that way since January 7 of this year. I forgot about it, and installed it on my laptop. After updating it, it now says I have XX number of days to activate, I chose to activate now and it says that the number is not good. I went back to the machine I forgot about and checked that and that shows it is activated. My question is what do I need to do legally to activate the copy on my laptop and deactivate the one on the virtual machine?

Thanks

A:windows 7 activation

Welcome,

You can only have one copy running. Remove it from the machine that you no longer want to use Windows 7

Then call the number that I will give you shortly, and explain, in a polite and professional manner, They will take care of everything

In this order:
Remove the OS from one computer
Call this number
http://www.microsoft.com/licensing/e...n-centers.aspx

Explain the way you did to me. They are professional and polite, They will activate you. Have your number ready.

I have an Acer 5338 laptop which was purchased with Vista preinstalled. The deal included a free upgrade to windows 7. The computer was use for some time with Vista. I then partitioned the hard drive and dual booted the machine. I had mislaid the upgrade disks so used an alternative Windows 7 Home Premium disk and a product key which I obtained from Ebay. All worked OK for a time. Having found the upgrade discs I attempted to change the product key to the legitimate one from the Acer upgrade disc packaging. Every time I ckicked the "change product key" I got an error message. A few days ago there appeared a Windows 7 update message. So I performed a download and install of the 20 update items. I was then presented with a black screen and the message that my copy of Windows was illegal. This time the "change product key" option worked and I change the key to the good one. I was still unable to Activate. I rang Microsoft who checked the product key and told me that this was a full retail version key not OEM and I would need to reinstall and start from scratch. I do not wish to do this as I will lose all my installed programmes.
Can anyone suggest an alternative way of activating my legitimate software.

Regards All,
Wychwar

90% of Keys obtained from eBay are counterfeit.

To properly analyse and solve problems with Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool
(download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )
Once saved, run the tool.
Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report.
To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response.
- **in your own thread**, please
Please also state the Version and Edition of Windows quoted on your COA sticker (if you have one) on the case of your machine (or inside the battery compartment), but do NOT quote the Key on the sticker!

I have a question, not necessarily a problem. Last night I installed Nero and when I restarted, Windows XP Home came up and told me that I have made significant changes to my system since Windows was activated. (I bought and installed XP home version sometime between Xmas and New Year's, so I've had it about a month.) It wanted me to reactivate windows withing 3 days. I was a little confused, but tried to reactivate, but was informed that my code had exceeded its limits and to get a new one. I had a choice of phone numbers to call, but since it was later in the evening, thought I would do it first thing this morning. This morning I repeated what I did last night cause I could find the list of numbers. This included going online. I was waiting for the next info page to load and noticed at the top of the screen that it had been successfully reactivated. Last night I re-entered my code. This morning I didn't. I don't understand what happened and why I would have to reactivate to start with. I am curious about this and wonder if anybody else has had this happen. I hope I don't have to reactivate every time that I make changes. That would suck.
Thanks.

A:Windows XP activation

Typically you only have to reactivate after major changes. I think it is up to 10 hardware devices? Normally you'll get that if you swap out a mobo or change a lot of hardware. As for the key being used too many times, you can just call and they will give you another to type in.
