How can I add a WWAN 4G LTE Card + antenna to my 2018 X1 Carbon 6th generation?

Q: How can I add a WWAN 4G LTE Card + antenna to my 2018 X1 Carbon 6th generation?

Hey guys, I've recently purchased a 6th generation Thinkpad X1 Carbon. At the time of my purchase it was only avaliable without WWAN.However I can now see that Lenovo il selling them with built-in WWAN too. I've opened up my laptop and I can see there is a sim-card reader installed, as well as the sim slot on the back. Also there is a free slot where the WWAN card can go. I can see there are no LTE antennas installed however.See picture: https://imgur.com/o5RU96U I have tried getting in touch with the local Lenovo sales phone number but I am always put on hold and the call gets dropped after 15 minutes of waiting each time.I have also tried opening a support ticket regarding this, asking for the part number on the modem and the antenna. However, I was only provided with the part number for the antenna. Do you guys know of any documentation on how I should go ahead for installing the antenna? As far as I understand the antenna is PN 01YR426 . What LTE modems are supported on this machine? From the specs sheet I can see that only the Intel XMM 7360 (Fibocom L850-GL), M.2 card is listed as OEM. Where can I purchase this L850-GL module? I have tried looking various places but it doesen't seem to be avaliable for sale anywhere?! Could I maybe use a Sierra wireless AirPrime EM7455, or something else, instead? Also, is the antenna (01YR426) the same no matter which card I use? Really liking my X1 but LTE would be a game changer, I hate having to mess with Wifi Tethering each time....Any help/thoughts would be MUCH appreciated!

Preferred Solution: How can I add a WWAN 4G LTE Card + antenna to my 2018 X1 Carbon 6th generation?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I was wondering if someone has successfully mounted an SSD in the WWAN port on a Carbon X1 5th generation? I'm about to buy a 6th generation X1 and would like to do that. If you have actually done it, I'd sure appreciate knowing what parts you used and any tricks. I ask because I have an old T420S with an M2 drive in the WWAN port and it has worked brillianty for years. I'd like to set this machine up simiarly, with a second 1TB drive in the WWAN port, giving me 2TB total. Alternately, is it possible to order the X1 6th generation with no SSD but included install media? I could then snap in a Samsung 2TB 960 Pro drive and build it up from the media. Thank you for your help!

I am looking at upgrading my daughters laptop.  It is a B575 type 1450.  Wondering if anyone had any luck on installing a mSATA drive into the mini PCI-e slot used for WWAN?  Not sure if the motherboard can be configured in bios to use it as a sata drive.  I might just have to update the slow 5400 sata drive with a SSD drive.  Would like to still keep the old HD for data. Thanks for the help.

Hi! If you have a watt meter such as the one below, when you put your Thinkpad X1 Carbon 2018/6:th gen under maximum load for long, what power consumption does it actually show? Personally I'm asking this because I'm pondering buying an Akitio Node Pro Thunderbolt 3 enclosure, which would work as laptop charger through the USBC-Thunderbolt cable's "Power Delivery" function, however it gives 60W while the X1 6:th gen comes with a 65W charger. I wonder if the 60W charger would work in the real world. Things you can do to maximize load on your laptop: * put your laptop on maximum load max   * CPU like calculating a zillion decimals of pi,   * read disk all the time like some disk benchmarking program,  * run something on the laptop's built-in display too like loop a video, and * plug in one or two 2.5" harddrives to the USB plugs and run disk benchmarking on it/them too. I think this the real world max watt consumption is very interesting for the world to know, also if you want to know how much you are really pay for your laptop being powered on, this is central for you to test. (I'm making a separate thread where I ask the same thing for Yoga 3:rd gen) Thank you and most grateful for any followup!  https://www.amazon.com/TS-836A-Energy-Voltage-Electricity-Monitor/dp/B00E945SJG

Hi all, I need some assistance in adding LTE/WWAN options to a P52 laptop that wasn't ordered as 'WWAN Ready' The laptop has a SIM Card slot but no M.2 WWAN Module or WWAN Antennas connected to it. I have been back and forth with Lenovo many times and they say it's not possible to upgrade this unit as it wasn't purchased originally as WWAN Ready.. which I think means the laptop would be installed with an M.2 WWAN Module and the WWAN antenna I am able to find the M.2 WWAN Module which is compatible however not finding any WWAN antenna. Lenovo said they don't stock them for this Laptop. Lenovo ThinkPad Fibocom L850-GL CAT9 WWAN - wireless cellular modem - 4G LT - PART # 4XC0R38452 Does anyone have any experience with these? Thanks

How can I add a wireless card to the Carbon X1?  The original answer was "can't be done" becuase the computer is a sealed case and has no capability for it.  I call BS!!  The computer obviously has a slot for it, a Sim card holder, and the option to order it from the factory with wireless.  How to add wireless to a non-wireless Carbon X1?

Moderator note: edited subject to match content.  Was:  Docking stations for X1 Carbon.

A:X1 Carbon: add WWAN card

You don't say which generation X1C you have, but AFAIK you can add a WWAN card.  Instructions are in the Hardware Maintenance Manual for your particular model.

The challenge will be antennas if they aren't already installed, and finding a card that passes the BIOS whitelist.

This isn't something I can address in detail, but if you'll list your MT-M - like 20FB002SUS as an example of a WWAN-upgradable unit - others will probably be able to help.  (Upgradable means that the antennas are already in place.)

FWIW,

Hello, genealogyxieYou are right, only Sierra em7345 (LTE/3g) and Ericsson n5321 (3g) wwan modems are compatible with x1c gen3. Note, they must have Lenovo FRU p/n, 04X6014 and 04W3842, respectively.em7355 (Gobi 5000) isn't in the compatibility list.

Can anyone say if I purchased the Sierra em7345 card for my x1 Carbon, which carrier (in USA) will I have to get a service plan with? Can It work with any carrier?

A:X1 Carbon 3rd Gen WWAN Card

HelloIt's simpler to answer about carrier and access mode (LTE, 3g) you prefer as this modem supports dozen of the US operators as well doesn't support a big part of them, including market leaders like Sprint, or supports partially (i.e.not every frequency band the carrier operates in). Also, not every operator's network covers entire US area.

My experience with the upgrade. First I tried to get smart and get a generic EM7455, error 1802 and shutdown occured, Lenovo whitelists hardware and illegal BIOS mods are not my cuppa Joe. Then I tried to get the EM7455 from IBM Lenovo parts, delays until June, canceled. Ordered from HPP on Amazon, Lenovo original. Main antenna pin on card broke off into the antenna connector, after the stress of two connects, no luck extracting, snapped it off and then soldered the cable into the EM7455 board. It was a dumb MISTAKE, because the cable is actually coaxial. Ordered Lenovo 1AW308 antenna (LAN and WWAN) and took the T460 apart. Carved up the micro-SIM tray (microsurgery with a blade) to accept the SIM card from AT&T. Make four cuts into the LCD bezel trim to access the screws because I was too ;lazy to pry it off, it all works now. Tips: To avoid pin amputation (which will get stuck in antenna connector) lift the WWAN card off the board avoiding contact with the connectors, wear a x10 bino magnifier preferable with a light, and bend the cables to lay flush with board before snappin in using nail, make sure you feel the slight pop when the connectors align before applying pressure. Oh and make sure you are well rested with the kids and wife out of the house Half an hour of work initially, then a five hour session to fix the booboo. Parts for the unfortunate antenna amputees, order here:IBM Lenovo Parts01AW308 Antenna (has both WiFi and WWAN, ... I'm about to purchase a new X1 Carbon and need 1TB SSD. I already have Samsung 960 Pro NVMe PCIe M.2 1TB drive and thinking of ordering X1 with a smallest 256GB SSD option. Based on my research, Lenovo uses the latest (OEM, no consumers equivalent yet) Samsung PM981 SSD (with Phoenix controller and 3D TLC NAND Flash). 960 Pro has Polaris controller and 2D & 3D MLC NAND Flash.Should there be any issues using a different type SSD in X1? The reason I'm asking is that I had some bad experience replacing parts (though not SSD) in ThinkPad. I had T440p and replaced touchpad without buttons with the one that did have buttons. The original touchpad was Synaptics and the new one was ALPS. The problem was that with every system update Windows was replacing ALPS drivers with Synaptics ones and I always had to rollback the drivers manually. It seemed like T440p had touchpad type "hardcoded" and never properly recognized the new touchpad!I would like to avoid the similar issue with SSD, but at the same time I'd prefer to save $500 Lenovo asks for 1TB SSD.Thanks

I haven't seen any confirmation that Lenovo allows the use of an SSD in the WWAN slot on the 5th gen X1 Carbon, so I would say that it probably wouldn't work.  You can try though.

And there's only one M.2 slot, so I don't think you can add an extra SSD.

Hello!  I am seeking the sage wisdom of veteran thinkpad owners for an upcoming purchase.  I am considering an x250 (i5, 256 ssd, 8gb, 1080P ips non touch, with nothing but a fresh install of Windows 10 pro 64 bit and MS office pro plus) to use for the next two years while I complete a degree(mostly paper writing, web browsing, netflix/youtube etc..nothing heavy). I prioritize a good keyboard, good battery life, light weight(under 3lbs), durability, and saving money if possible.  With that said, I can't deal with laggy performance and lackluster battery life. I "could" buy a new laptop, but am having a hard time justifying spending that much since my usage is so light.  My previous laptop was a macbook air and it served me well, but the keyboard never really impressed me. I sold it, bought a nice Chromebook(12.5 inch screen) and pocketed the change. I have not had a "real" computer for a few years now and it's time.  What say you? Will the X250 perform well for 2 years and provide good battery life with the flush battery?  Or should I get an x1 carbon from costco despite the issues reported?    Thank you is advance!

Here are my requirements: - need to be able to connect to a 4K TV @ 60Hz with Chroma 4:4:4 (TV has HDMI 2.0 port)- compatible with Ubuntu Linux and be able to use eGPU under Ubuntu Linux- has a Thunderbolt 3 port to connect to the eGPU at full 40Gbps speed- ideally below 2kg- about 10 hours battery life and if possible, can change battery easily- if possible no big and heavy AC adapter- good customer support and after sales services- Intel 8 gen (6-core is better but not a must)- no heat/noisy fan/thermal/throttling issue- no scaling issues when using 4K display (both internal LCD and external 4K display)- no scaling issues when the LCD and external 4K monitor are at different resolutions

I am going to upgrade my laptop very soon.  I really like the X1 carbon but also fancy the Yoga.  I will be buy the highest performance available for my needs.   It appears the Carbon and Yoga can be purchased with the same i7 and ram configurations.   Ports are the same as well?  I need at least 1 thunderbolt connection.  Am I missing any performance differences between them a the high end? It would appear the biggest trade off is the extra size and weight of the Yoga?  The Carbon being more svelte?  I would not use the Yoga in tablet/pen mode but it would be nice to have and perhaps I find more applications for it. I am in IT admin - I wish they still had real Ethenet ports...  but I get the form factor will not support it. Thanks in advance for any all/help.

Hi Warder2112,

My two cents: If you don't need the tablet/pen mode, the X1 Carbon is svelter. If you want the sveltest machine with a real Ethernet port, look at the T480s.

Hi all, I have the problem that the two finger scrolling on the new X1 (i7, UHD Model) is slow and stuttering with the touchpad. It is a touchpad problem, since it is very smooth with an external mouse. Strange is that the Touchpad Tab is missing under Control Panel -> Mouse. My T480s had a tab there and touchpad settings were adjustable -scrolling etc. is very smooth on the T480s with the touchpad. The firmware update (Vantage) for the touchpad on the X1 has been done - but it did nothing.  Strangely there seems to be no driver for the synaptics touchpad (device manager lists a standard microsoft driver from 2006). The Trackpoint seems to be from Elan: There is a driver available and that one is working fast and without a problem, too. Someone has an idea to solve that? Thankswinni

I need to get my files off the SSD (see photo), it is a Toshiba 256GB THNSFJ256GDNU. Does anyone know where I can get an adapter or something that I can use to retrieve my files?  Thanks!

Hello, Do I have a chance to run 3x 2560x1440 @ 60Hz on my Carbon 4th gen (directly connected)? (I am familir with the displays table, I currently have 3x 1920x1200 on the OneLink+ Dock).Since DP1.2 can officially support 2x 2560x1440, and OneLink+ Dock ports are 1.2, daisy chain should work. Or at least one daisy-chained, and one single.Any ideas about this? Thanks
