T580 screen quality, Lenovo refuses to repair T580 LCD screen under warranty

Q: T580 screen quality, Lenovo refuses to repair T580 LCD screen under warranty

I refer to another similar complain post, I just met a similar problem with lenovo bad screen quality and poor customer service. I bought Thinkpad T580 laptop last year and used in a normal environment (always on the desk in my home). One day I found there is a 2x2cm light/white spot on the screen bottom area, which can only be observed when the screen background is in white color. Lenovo told me that it's cased by outside pressure and they are not covering my screen replacement under warranty. I own another thinkpad x260 which use in my daily and oversea business travel for over three years and everything is still fine. That's why I purchase T580 for my home use. It is disppointing that Lenovo can not stand behind their product and stand behind their promise to customers (warranty). Lenovo advertises the Thinkpad T580 as following on their webside: "We test ThinkPads against 12 military-grade requirements and more than 200 quality checks to ensure they run in extreme conditions. From the arctic wilderness to desert dust storms, from zero-gravity to spills and drops, you can trust your T Series device to handle whatever life throws your way." I disgree with their statement and not going to pay ~$295 parts+ ~30 labour total around 325 to fix my screen. Very disapointed with Lenovo quality and customer service, I won't consider Lenovo again if there is another choice.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello.  I've had this laptop for about two weeks and the screen is quite dim.  I've manually changed the brightness to the max level and it isn't very bright.  I've google this problem many times and have tried a lot of things, but nothing has worked.  One of the key things that I've discovered is that this laptop don't seem to have an ambient light sensor....is that correct?  If it did have, I think I would like to turn it off.  But I can't verify that I even have such a sensor. Any tips are very much appreciated.  Thank you.

HelloWould anyone please be able to help with some t580 questions? 1) I wanted to know what the FHD (not UHD) screen is like especially in terms of sRGB, adobeRGB and PWM? If not, are there any comparisons to the T570 FHD screen? 2) the laptop comes with 4 cell 32wh front battery.  The rear battery configurations seem to be- 6 cell 48wh- 3 cell 24wh- 6 cell li-ion 72wh cylindrical  Is the front battery removable? Also the 6 cell 48wh option seems to be cheaper than the 3 cell 24wh - anyone know why this is? The front battery still remains with all of these combinations doesn't it? Thanks

Hello everybody, My T580 flickers like crazy when I use it at a low brightness setting.I am using Windows 10 Home (Build 1809) and have updated all my fimrware and drivers using Lenovo Vantage. Here's a video of this.  The flickering stops when I increase the brightness and everything seems fine then. I am not too sure if it is a software issue or a hardware one. Does anybody else have the same issue?

My fairly new (purchased in August 2018) ThinkPad T580 screen is black, when the display is opened completely I can see the display ever so faintly.  I have gone through every step possible to fix.  When I connect to an external display I'm able to view on external display and laptop display stays black/extremely dark.  Does not light up at all at any time.  I have check display options, check for driver updates, ran updates, did the whole power thing and hold the fn+f6 or just the f6, and I'm told the connector is connected properly.  Do I need a new motherboard, connector to display, new display, or what is necessary to get this fixed?  Was working completely fine, I went and closed the display and reopened 5 minutes later and the display never came back up.  Help!

I bought a T580 with the 4K screen in June 27. Right after I received the laptop I had to leave for work in another country. About 3-4 days after leaving the country I noticed that there are a couple of defects on the screen. But the worst one is right on the address bar, which is really annoying. See the image below (sorry for the quality, that's the best I could do). They're like a dark "stain" right below the surface of the screen. I've tried to overlook this, but you know how it works, you can't "unsee" it and it's really sad that a brand new laptop would have these defects right on the screen.  What are my options with this? I bought the laptop in the US, but I'm not so sure if this can be fixed where I am now (Venezuela).  I'm going to the US for a week in December, but:I don't know if this can still be fixed under warrantyIf this can get fixed in under a week.

Hi, I've a T580 for over 12 months and recently purchased an Acer H277HUSMIPUZ USB C enabled screen to use as a 2nd screen, see https://www.amazon.co.uk/Acer-H277HUsmipuz-Monitor-Silver-ZeroFrame/dp/B01BSIL4WU I purchased this particular screen primarily to use the USB C functionality i.e. USB C for both display, sound & power but despite appearing to work perfectly on initial connection the screen constantly resets itself every few minutes i.e. it goes blank, what was on the Acer screen moves over to the laptop screen as though the Acer had been disconnected and then within 2-3 seconds the content is restored to the Acer screen and it works fine for another few minutes until the process repeats. See video.   I assumed the problem must be the screen so initiated a support call and long story short Acer took the screen back, replaced the mainboard, tested it and returned it to me but on receipt the same issue keeps occurring hence starting this thread. I have read other threads ref problems with USB C on Lenovo devices and confirm I have Thunderbolt software and firmare installed etc.  I can also confirm the problem occurs whether I connect the Acer screen to the USB C or Thunderport ports and I have tried 2 different USB C cables just to eliminate the possibility there was a problem with the cable.  The issue doesn't occur at all if I connect to the Acer screen via HDMI.   Would really appreciate help with s... Brand new T580 here, bought to run Qubes OS.Played around with Windows 10 for a while, downloaded the Qubes iso, put it on the stick, etc, the usual routine.Tried to boot from it, without success.Entered BIOS, played around with various settings, among others disabling secure boot and I *think* setting some video related parameter from 256 to 512. Also changed to boot order to have the USB HDD boot second after Windows.Anyway, saved my settings, tried to boot and got a blank screen. The only things that light up by default are the power and the Esc/FnLock leds, nothing else. The computer responds to Ctrl-Alt-Delete by rebooting, again to a blank screen. All other LEDs such as CapsLock etc light up, USB ports provide power (tried to connect an Android phone and it started charging)So I tried holding power button for X amount of seconds, I tried the emegency-reset pin - nothing, still a blank screen on boot.I removed the back plate, tried to boot without RAM, tried resetting it and setting it in another slot.I tried removing the coin-button battery and the internal battery for about a minute, I tried to boot without the coin-button battery installed.I tried to connect the computer to an external screen via HDMI - still nothing. It all happens in Poland, but I am curious as to how customers are treated by Lenovo in other countries.  The story in short: An E31-70 laptop bought 5 July 2017, end of June - does not open due to broken hinge. the shop/service where I have bought the laptop contacts the customer support only to get back reply that I must have act with undue force thus the problem. But there are no traces of "undue force" treatment to the exterior, so upon pointing that out the support changes the tune and says that it is a "secondary failure" not under the warrranty because I should have reported immediately after the first signs that something is wrong. Since the first sign was that day, this is BS, again I point it out but unfortunately in their third communication Lenovo ultimately refuses to repair under warranty. Since I had to open the laptop pretty soon having data on hard disk which I had to access (work deadline), I decided to have my service conduct the repairs and contacted the customer rights advisor. According to her instructions I sent a request for reimbursement after having received the invoice. Lenovo refused again. So I am forced to enter judicial proceedings. I have heard that Lenovo does not try to escape responsibility for shoddy products in such blatant way in other countries. If anyone from the Lenovo is reading this sad story, I would be interested to hear their opinion...Z...  My T580 suddenly one day stopped reading my external USB-C hard drive, I tried updating the drivers and several other suggested repairs with none of them working. The power light on the drive would come on but the computer didn't read it, verified with a second drive and they both work on my other computers. Looking at the timeline, I realized that this happened while the computer was still within it's warranty period, but I was busy and just let the problem go. Then two weeks later the computer just shut down on me and after letting it sit with the lid closed for a while, it was able to restart and I got a warning message at the BIOS screen that "The Power Adapter is of lower wattage than the one supplied with the machine" or something along those lines. Once booted up I was able to see that battery nuber one was fully depleted to 2% and the 2nd battery was at 99%, it then shut down on me again. I ordered a replacement power adapter to test and got the same message and the same symptoms, the computer would basically trickle charge at a rate slower than it consumed power, at this point I finally called customer service and started a repair ticket, this is when they told me that the computer was three weeks out of warranty....I send it in and a week later recieve a repair estimate of $589 to replace the whole motherboard. I called right back and complained that this computer was having problems before the warranty was up and was simply told it was out of warran... We just bought over 1000 Lenovo T580 laptops with Windows 10 1803. During the testing of our image we experienced no login issues. We had our image applied in the Lenovo factory before shipping. After deployment of the first 100 or so we started getting calls about a black screen after login that lasts for 15-30 minutes. Along with the black screen issue there is an overall slowness that wasnt there previously. Browsers and file explorer take a long time to open and Office 365 apps, especially Word take a long time to launch. The first login seems to be ok but every login after that takes an extraordinary amount of time. I saw a post about the T480 that recommended killing the Intel 620 graphics driver in safe mode and rebooting. This seems to be a temporary fix. We then used system update to update all critical and recommended updates (20+), including a graphics driver update and a usb c dock driver and firmware update. The machine immediately starts to run better but I dont know if this is a permanent fix. I've had a couple people already report the black screen again after recieving the updates. Any idea what it could be?

I am writing this message in order to inform the Lenovo English Community about Lenovo Turkey's unjust and unlawful policies that neglect customer satisfaction and violate Turkish Consumer Rights Law. 3 weeks ago, I bought a brand new Lenovo Yoga 720, with the financial support of my university's scientific research projects office. But, once I opened the original case of my brand new laptop, I realized that there is a tiny crack on the bottom-left end of the LCD beneath the touch screen (see the attached picture). Afterwards, I contacted Lenovo Turkey Customer Service, and sent my laptop to them for free service. After initial inspection, however, they asked me to pay 1.092,92 TRY (approximately $290) for repair service. I told them that they can not ask for money for this service, because it is a defective good and according to national conumer rights law they  (as the producer/exporter of the good) are obliged to replace the defective good or repair it for free.  In response, they unlawfully denied my demands and claimed that the crack is a result of user error. But when I asked them to prove their claim, they couldn't. Because, as you my guess, there is no trace of damage or usage on the laptop that may have caused such crack! Although I sent my complaints to Lenovo Turkey by both e-mail and post, they did not reply. Now, I will use my legal rights before Turkish authorities to claim a replace or free repair serv... Read more

Beginning of May (2018)  I got my T580. Always dream of owning a ThinkPad. Finally got the very expensive T580 with 8th  gen I7, 16 Gb, etc. Everything was working well expect the fingerprint reader (didn't care much). Battery life was poor, despite LeNovo claiming many hours (didn't care much as well). Mid Jully the laptop was going to sleep randomly and sound had a very mysterious and loud static noise. I contacted Lenovo support and they ask me to sent the laptop in for Repairs. Laptop was received on Aug 1st, three weeks. There is no estimate when I call support services many time and all they say is that there are no parts!!! What???? What a joke. I cannot believe that Lenovo is such a disorganized company. Never felt so disrespected. I'm more than three weeks without the laptop and all I hear is.. 'oh there are no parts'. Good thing I have my old 8-year-old Asus gaming Laptop. Shame on you Lenovo. I ask to escalate the case and no one gets back to me. Unbelievable. What a nightmare! Stay away from their products.

Option 1: replace existing SSD with larger one 500/512GB or 1TB (with 970 EVO or PRO for example). You ll keep full x4 PCIe speed that way.

Option 2: Use RC100 2242 in 2nd (WWAN) slot. Will operate at x2 speed.

PS BTW PM961 is 512GB not 480GB and lenovo is T480/T580 I suppose  ...

Then it would just be 2 cables for docking/undocking...

My T580 (Windows 10) has suddenly stopped booting past the Lenovo logo in any consistent manner. I ran the full diagnostics and the received a Final Result Code of U1VFHEA5M-1VH7ED. Most times it just hangs at the Lenovo logo. Sometimes I receive a blue screen saying 'Your PC ran into a problem and needs to restart. We'll restart for you.' but it doesn't restart. The stop code displayed is WHEA UNCORRECTABLE ERROR. I drained the battery yesterday (just left it running without electrical power until the battery died) and, on the second attempt, it booted up successfully. On boot up there was a new program (Microsoft Teams) installed. I didn't install that program so I am suspecting it was installed during a Windows update. There was an icon in the taskbar asking to set a time for a reboot to install updates. I didn't set a time. I just left the machine on all night. This morning it was hung up again (black screen). I powered down and up aagain and the hang at the Lenovo logo is back. I tried to reboot into Recovery Options and the blue screen with stop code WHEA UNCORRECTABLE ERROR is displayed and the machine is hung again. Does anyone know the cause of this and how to fix it?

Hello community, I have a problem with my T580. It is 4 months old, and I use it on my office desk with 2 monitors (the lid is closed) in the 95% of the time. This is the 2nd time now, when I take it home, switch on, but the backlight is not working. I have to use a torchlight to be able to log in. The attached monitor is working after the log-in, but the display is blank. Last time it fixed the problem, when I attached the USB stick of my Plantronics headset. Now it doesn't work. I'll try to attach the docking station later, but I have to pick it up from the office. Is this a known problem in the community, or am I the "lucky one"?

I'm using Lenovo ThinkPad T580 and would like to connect eGPU Sonnet eGFX Breakaway Box 550 with GTX970. When I connect Thunderbolt 3 cable to upper USB-C socket I get error "Thunderbolt device functionality might be limited" I was not able to find any useful information about this issue. So I connected Thunderbolt 3 cable to USB-C socket which is used by docking station. It works fine I was able to install nvidia drivers, but it works perfectly only during the time when battery is charging. When battery is fully charged egpu starts to disconnect/connect all the time. The screenshot shows last moments before it goes through endless disconnect/connect cycles. This eGPU works absolutely fine with my other laptop Dell XPS13 (whether it's fully charged or not) I updated BIOS and already tried different Thunderbolt 3 settings in BIOS. Is there a way to fix this issue?

My kid has been using this laptop and loved it, but mentioned a while ago it was difficult to power it back on after turnned it off. However she managed to work around by putting it in hibernate/sleeping mode only, or recycling the system many times (by holding on power button to force it off). The issue was black screen (no Lenovo logo) but computer was on. I didn't pay much attention because she can still make it work, and I was too busy. Last week, there was a windows update (again) and the computer was forced recycle. It never comes back alive again. The same, computer is humming, but no any visual output on screen, just black. Tried novo button, bootable USB, external monitor, all no use. Check the warranty, just over by 2 months! Asked the service store, to fix will cost at least $200-$300 to replace the motherboard! It does not make sense when spent a bit more could buy a new notebook. But my kid liked it and it does not make sense to throw it away either, when it still looks pretty new and only being used very lightly (schoolwork only). A:Lenovo Ideapad U410 - no screen output or black screen, and just out of warranty

Welcome to the Lenovo Community !

Sorry to hear of all the problems.  Here are a couple of things to try........

First, try a reset of the BIOS.  The procedure can be useful in resolving some hardware conflicts which your computer may have.  Just do this......

1. Unplug the charger / adapter. 2. Press and hold the Power Button for 15 seconds. 3. Plug in the charger / adapter if needed and power up the system to see if the problem was resolved.

If you are comfortable working inside your laptop. try this........

Try the reset again with the battery removed.

If the reset didn't resolve the problem then you may have a failed piece of hardware preventing the bootup. Remove the battery, hard drive, optical drive, memory, wireless card and bluetooth if it is installed. Now try to power up the stripped laptop. With all the hardware removed you should have lights come on and it may possibly beep since there is no memory installed. If the laptop is showing signs of life start adding hardware one piece at a time starting with a memory module and boot up the laptop. If it doesn't power up try the memory in the other slot. Also try the other memory module separately in both slots if two are available. If it is still showing signs of life add another piece and boot. Do this for each item until it doesn't power up again. The last piece of hardware installed is your problem part.

I don't post here often. I hope it's the right place for this kind of comments. I have been a loyal Lenovo customer for eight years, during which I bought two workstations and spent more than $6,000 each time. I also spent VERY good money to make sure I would get extended warranty and on-site repairs if needed. I have never needed assistance in all these years, but now that I do, Lenovo is not there for me. The screen of my Lenovo W541 has a minor crack, which might get worse over time. My workstation is still under warranty, for about another month. I would have liked to have the screen repaired or replaced, but Lenovo claims I should send in the workstation to a depot. I must mention that, for work-related reasons, I cannot go without my workstation not even for one day. I guess it is easy to understand, if one, like me, is willing to spend more than $6,000 on a laptop. I asked a Lenovo authorized business partner to help me. So, after a long back and forth, Lenovo has presented me with these two options: a) send in the workstation to a depot (part would be free, I would have to pay for labor); b) use the service of a business partner, who would replace the screen in minutes, but in this case I would have to pay for part and labor.  I asked to have the part sent to my home or office, and I would perform the replacement myself, but Lenovo are not willing to do that. I am very disappointed. In the end, I will stay with a cracked screen, or I... Read more

Has anyone actually fixed that in a decent way that constantly works? I have seen there is multiple threads with even older thinkpadshttps://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-T400-T500-and-newer-T/T480-throttling-and-high-CPU-temps/td-p/...https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-T400-T500-and-newer-T/T480-TDP-throttle/td-p/4064211funny when you go through the thread and all you see is "yeah im having the same problem", "#metoo" etc. and it just looks PATHETIC. This company may have got my money this time, but when the time for a change comes, I will not even look at their useless products. Ive had my T580 for like 2 weeks and the last week was a constant fight with gpu(MX150) getting up to 70 degrees, then throttling and slowing the whole thing down. I have studied ThrottleStop inside and out, studied BIOS like an engineer enabling/disabling Intel speedstep, power management options etc., spent hours on reinstalling windows after removing Intel Dynamic Platform & Thermal Framework with no real fix, underclocking, overclocking, undervolting WHAT THE...?! Should all that be even necessary when I want to play a game on a laptop for 1 hour? Even if it is not a gaming laptop, there should be an adequate cooling system that actually allows you to do that at a certain performance. The laptop cost like $2k and I have a feeling I could have bought a yoga 310 for $200 if I wanted something with the same performance.Reddit is full of people having the same issues with ... I'm thinking of buying a T580. The teardown videos show a card type M.2 solid state drive in place. Will my 2.5" Samsung 850 Pro 2TB SSD fit? Will I need any adapters?

Just purchased T580 with UHD display and Intel UHD 620.  The default resolution is 4K (3840x2160).  When I go to display setting, I found no QHD with the correct aspect ratio (i.e. to get full screen on built-in display, I need 2560x1440 but the options I have are 2560x2048, 2560x1920 and 2560x1600). Anyone knows how solve this?  I tried Intel Graphics custom resolution but when I clicked "add", it did nothing.

I have a T580 and the lid opens too easily. The lid moves if I move the laptop a bit. Is it possible to tighten the lid?

A:T580 The Lid is too smooth

It seems you are uncomfortable with the lid. It's impossible to tighten it unfortunately. You may have to deal with it.Maybe a little design change for Lenovo eh?

I have a brand new T580 in front of me. I am trying unsuccessfully to boot it from a USB stick. In case it makes any difference I am trying to do this before ever booting into Windows. Here is what I have tried. First attempt: Power On; Hit Enter at Lenovo splash screen; Hit F12 at Startup Interupt Menu; Select my USB drive from list; Hit Enter; screen goes back for about one second and then the F12 menu reappears like nothing happened. Force power off by pressing and holding the power button. Second attempt: Power On; Hit Enter at Lenovo splash screen; Hit F1 at Startup Interupt Menu; to eter the BIOS Setup. Disable secure boot (Security > Secure Boot). Save (F10); repeat first attempt. Same result. Third attempt: as before except that I additionally set Startup > UEFI/Legacy Boot to Both and tried again. Same result. Fourth attmpt: as before except that I changed the boot priority to put legacy first. Same result. Fifth attempt: as before except that I set  Startup > UEFI/Legacy Boot  to Legacy Only. Same result. The USB stick has Grub on it and boots Linux distributions. It works in about a dozen other machines that I use it on regularly.  I tried two separate USB sticks and I tried both USB ports on the right-hand side of the computer. If I can't get this to work then it's going back. I am stuck. Please help!

Hi, i have poured all of my summer money into a brand new T580.I belived i was getting superior build quality and keyboard. Well at least one of these is true. But it came with its share of problems The plastic only chasis bends even when picking the notebook up -> the screen is getting scratched by the keyboard. The static crackling sounds with ultrasound circuit whining  in Windows resolved only by disabling TurboBoost and underclocking aka Intel SpeedStepInability to wake up from the deeper sleep/suspend. I have dualboot and waking up after suspending from Windows gets me into Linux every time. Pressing F12 does nothing. And then after i restart into Windows my mouse in the Thunderbolt port stops working. So i got to reboot a second time. The motherboard has no daughterboards, wrecking one port means replacing the whole motherboard or resoldering the portNitpickingFirmware takes 6-7 secs to do its thing on every boot.Non existant Linux fingerprint drivers .Keyboard does not remember it's backlight settings between reboots. The top plastic is uncleanable. It becomes hydrophobic where you touch it frequently. If something has a solution please let me know. I am more than happy to try it.Sending the notebook for repair would likely solve nothing.I just expected the machine to live up to the legacy it has. There is so many cheaper convertibles and gaming laptops i did not buy just to have this one and so far, i don't feel like it was worth it.So ple... Hello, sorry for posting these basic questions but I've done some research and I want to make sure that I make the right decision when buying a new T580. I've been out of the loop in tech for a few years now, and I'm just learning now about hardware BIOS whitelists, etc. I want to buy the most basic T580 model and make sure I can upgrade certain components later on when I have the money available to do so.  1) Can I upgrade the basic model with the i5-8250u / 4GB RAM to 16GB of RAM later on? PSREF says yes, up to 32GB, and I've watched videos that say there are two slots for RAM available. Just want to make sure there is not any limitation and that I can upgrade later on to at least 16GB. 2)I already have a Samsung SSD - SATA III 2.5 inch. Since this model has a 2.5 drive I assume I can replace it with mine. But am I limiting myself in anyway for future updates if I don't get one of the NVME drives now? 3) I would possibly like to get the WWAN card later on. Is it possible to buy and add one later on?  4) Will this computer run dual 4k external monitors, should I ever get them?  Since money is very tight, my only priority right now would be to get the stuff I cannot add later on (3840 x 2160 screen, possibly graphics card but would have to bump up to 8350u).  Thanks!

Hi, I have a T580 (20L9001EUS).  How many USB-C ports does it have? From the specs, It looks like two on the left side of the laptop.  But I can only plug the USB-C power cable into one of the ports, and have tried another USB-C cable, and it only fits into the same port, as the power cable.  The port I can use is # 2 in diagram below. Should I also be able to use port #1 for the power adapter and USB-C communications?Worth while contacting support?

I am having trouble finding out whether the T580 has a touchscreen, at least optionally. Maybe this is a thing specific to regional markets (I reside in Switzerland) but the info I am finding is confusing. May somebody shed light?
