Solved: Automatic Updates Download But Won't Install

Q: Solved: Automatic Updates Download But Won't Install

Hello all,

Preferred Solution: Solved: Automatic Updates Download But Won't Install

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Sorry not had time to look through many posts to see if there are any similar. Right the laptop has had this problem for a while now. It just won't download and install automatic updates from Windows. It just fails everytime. The only thing it has let me download is Windows XP Service Pack 3. I have done a scan with Norton and it hasn't found anything. I just don't know if my computer is missing something vital. I've done free scans to see if my laptop's drivers are out of date and there are a few. I'm thinking of investing in one of these to rectify the problems. I don't know if this is connected. Anyways i'm not sure if i can post a Hijack This Log in here but i will add it

Thanks in advance for any replies!

I've got a laptop with Windows XP Professional installed, and have had it for about two years now. This is my first computer with XP and I've noted how the system will automatically install periodic XP updates.

Now I've got an Windows XP icon in the Icon Tray and when you click on it says that it is a Security Update for the Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0 SP2. However, when you click on the option to have the system install the update, it initiates the update and seems to complete the installation - but the update icon still shows up in the Icon Tray.

I've also noticed that on the three Turn Off Computer options that a Automatic Update shield symbol appears superimposed on the Turn Off option, with instruction below that say to have the computer turn itself off and the update will be installed. Well, I've tried that option also, and as the system tries to shutdown, I see it trying to install the update, but apparently unsuccessfully.

Maybe unrelated, but I've also noted that occasionally, when I use the Turn Off Computer option, it will only show the Switch User or Log Off User options - and none of the others (Standby, Turn Off, Restart).

Any help or suggestions on what to do to kick start that automatic update to take hold?

XP Home SP2 on both computers...Two computers, mine on cable, a second on dial-up.
Re today's MS Updates - I downloaded & installed them on my cable computer but the other computer, on dial-up, can't even reach the page to start the download. I want to get the downloads again on my cable computer (by re-downloading onto a CD), then put the CD into the other computer's CD drive to install them onto the other computer.

I'm stuck what to do after I get them redownloaded onto a CD using my computer. I would put that CD into the other computer...but then what? What folder do I copy them to? And especially! - how do I start the installation process?

I had a message recently that an update failed to install. (it was one of many that downloaded in a group) When I go to microsoft updater, it get a message that I need to install(its already downloaded) the genuine validation tool.(yet in the review history, validation tool is already installed but not showing on the add/remove in control panel) Yesterday, my automatic updater notified me that there were new updates, so I downloaded 3 new updates. All seemed well until the updater tried to install, then it just hung trying to initialize the installer. When I gave up and closed the screen with task manager, I tried to shut down the computer. I got a message on a blue screen that it was installing download 1 of 3 and not to shut off computer that it would shut off automatically. 2 hours later, same message about installing 1 of 3. I am running XP sp2. The other day i noticed that i hadn't had any new updates since April 08. I managed to turn automatic updates on, which told me there were 24 updates due, so i let them download and install, at the end it said updates complete and succeeded (apart from sp3), but straight away the balloon popped up saying there were 24 updates due - exactly the same ones that i had already installed. I checked add/remove programs and realised they hadn't actually installed. I have tried again wth the firewall turned of - didn't work. I have also changed BITS to automatic. Does anyone know how i can solve this please?

W=2000XP.IE6,, About 2 months ago, I { && many, many others } had problems with MS automatic updates.Seems a couple of the updates did more damage than anything else. I had to go into Safe Mode to restore my computer to an earlier date. All is running very well, now, with automatic updates turned off. I do get the pop-up at the bottom telling me this alert, but I ignore. ONLY thing is, I am NOT updating anything right now !! I am unsure of what I need & what I don't need, or what may damage my computer. I am fairly computer experienced & don't know the best way to custom install a few updates, here & there, as are best for my system. What is the BEST way for me to keep the system safe , as far as updates go ??

Hi everyone,

Got a client who want to keep every computers up to date automatically.

I done it by pushing a GPO to search of update every day (22 hour by default sound good) and install the updates ŗ 23:00 every night then restart if necessary (confirmed on every computer).

But the KB890830 from the 11 october wait for manual install in windows update on every computer since it come up.  I launch the installation manually on a computer for testing if there is no trouble and all go fine.  It pop-up the agreement,
accepted, created the restore point and the installation was sucessful witouth having to restart after.

So why this update doesn't install automatically, is it because of the agreement? Do a WSUS is necessary for skipping this part? The WSUS at this client is down for some reasons and we can't go on every computer everytime to confirm if the update
will be install or is waiting.

Thanks you

Now the message im getting is to "Install windows update software" and adds "to check for updates I must first install an update for Windows Update" So i click install now...wait for it to download and install, and in a few moments, a message comes up saying "windows could not search for new updates". So I click TRY AGAIN...and the process repeats itself...I Also want to add that I am not using a firewall....and I am connected to the internet.

I use XP and don't know if this has anything to do with it or not, but the other day I downloaded 31 updates that I didn't know were needed (for some reason my Windows Update had quit sending me the needed updates and I had not realized it for some time, 'til many problems arose). Afterwards, I found 3 more Critical Updates and 2 Device Driver Updates that needed to be installed. I downloaded them, but they never installed, so I tried downloading seperately and they still won't install and don't give a reason why. It just keeps saying it's downloading, even after a few hours, for what should take a few minutes. The elapsed time of the download is exactly what it should be, but it still appears to be downloading. I cleaned up every little thing I could think of last night, but they still won't install. I only know what I've taught myself in the last year and that's not much. Does anyone know what is causing this and what I need to do to solve this problem?

Hello There

I am using Windows Xp and have recently had probelm with Automatic updates . When I log on The Automatic update facility is showing has switched off . I can not turn the Auto update on through security centre.

I found a help site www.amset.info.co.uk where there were 3 programmes written for repair/reset/reinstall of the Auto update facility . When running these progs the Auto update facility is shown to be working . But when I log off and restart a new session the Auto update facility is once again showing has been switched off and I have to re-run the re-install system to allow me to access the Auto update facility . So whilst this programme has helped me access Auto update it does not save any changes or something is stopping me saving these changes .

I have run progs to detect spyware ( Malwarebytes ) and to clean the Registry ( Regcure ) but this does not have appeared to help .

Any suggestions out there ?

Many thanks

I have all of the critical updates save for 3 optional hardware updates.

I now have Automatic Updates turned off - don't want the interruption!

I notice that on startup, the Generic Host Process for Win32 Services aka svchost.exe kicks off the Automatic Updates program wuauclt.exe.

One would think that with all the bells and whistles MS would want WinXP w/SP2 to be smart enough to check to see that Automatic Updates is turned off and not execute wuauclt.exe!

Duh! MS,

-- Tom

P.S. Anyone know how to prevent wuauclt.exe from executing via some other configuration switch? Ok, its only a minor annoyance, and wauclt.exe eventually figures out that Automatic Updating is turned off (and exits) - its all a matter of where to put the intelligence not to do something that is not requested!

Please download and install Speccy to provide us with information about your computer.  When  FileHippo opens, click on Download latest version in the upper right pane.
When Speccy opens you will see a screen similar to the one below.

Click on File which is outlined in red in the screen above, and then click on Publish Snapshot.
The following screen will appear, click on Yes.

The following screen will appear, click on Copy to Clipboard.

Working on a friends PC. WIn7 Ultimate SP1, Celeron E3400 @2.6ghz & 2gb RAM & 500GB HDD in 2 partitions.

The system was failing at boot. This was a simple change of memory socket on the motherboard fix. Discovered that Windows Update was disabled, looked further & found AVast Free was set to ridiculously low levels & UAC was disabled (oh & operating on an ADMIN account by default!) - All corrected.

Due to all that, I looked deeper - The PC was over-run with PUP's & several viruses. I reset Avast levels & killed 2 viruses. ran MBAM & TDSSKiller & killed a crap load more. After this the PC stopped connecting to DNS (Network good, NO Internet). Fixed this with a series of TCP/IP & similar resets.

Win Update failed 3 times in a crashed or frozen PC (inl. 1xBSD), MS Fixit failed, so manually updated Windows Update Agent [version WIN7x86] from MS Support (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/949104). Fixed issue.

Win update completed the first batch of updates successfully but stopped working on the second pass (freezing in the install process) & now won't even download, let alone update...

(oh & I Ran secunia PSI - All 3rd party progs updated)

Any help gratefully recieved as my "overnight updated run" after the physical fix, is threatening to pass into the third day.

A:Win7 will not download or install updates

I would suggest that you get the system thoroughly checked out by a Security Analyst to assure it is infection free before continuing to try and get the Windows Updates installed.

A:Why won't my Windows XP download or Install the updates?

What are the problems? Is your system slowing down?
And, you really don't need anything in your "trusted zones". The 015's..
And, why do you need more MS updates? If you know your system, and you set up
security,....anti-virus,,anti-malware,,, and a firewall...And, everything works, why fix it?

i've got xp pro with sp 1 and there are two updates from the windows updater that i am unable to download or install...they are the latest update for my video card (geforce fx 5700 ultra) and also my processor (amd athlon xp 2500+ barton)...can anyone help me? please?

A:unable to download/install updates...

Does it give any errors when trying? I would suspect its just because the site is just so busy lately with SP2 etc, give it a try at different times ...have you tried going to the manufacturers web sites to see if they have updates .......

Hi All.

I frequently run processes on my pc that go all night. I also often go away from the office for a few days and then need to access the pc (which was left on) remotely to work.

My problem is that when windows finds an update, it just installs it and restarts when it wants to... which can be right in the middle of an important automation.

I also sometimes find that I can't access the pc remotely because it has somehow switched itself off, I'm assuming after an update (sleep is set to 'never').

How can I get Win 7 to download, and tell me about an update, then wait until I say "install"?

All help will be hugely appreciated.

I'm using Windows 7 x64 Ultimate SP1.

I want to manually check for updates, make Windows download them if there is any, but wouldn't install at that moment, instead make Windows install them next time I shut it down.

In Windows XP, it was easy. You just selected the option to download. And when you attempt to shut down Windows, it asked if you want to shut down normally, or you want to install updates while shutting down.

However, in Windows 7, I couldn't find a way to do this same behavior. Can you please tell me how to, if there is any way to do it?

A:How to: Manually, download updates but not install

Use this address to find the updates you want
in the right hand corner theres a search box, type in your windows version
then find the specific files you want\need
then save them wherever you want

Handy for reinstalls without having to download everything again
Stop Windows Update in services first
then run your updates
then START WU again and check for updates

I have a laptop that was hijacked. I am not sure what the specific name of the hijacker was. I ran MalwareBytes and it cleared most of the issues but I found that McAfee Internet Security Real Time Scanning and Firewall are Off. They both will turn on for about 5 seconds then turn back off again. I tried to run the update of McAfee and it seems to download the files but will not install them, McAfee just hangs at 0% installed. If I try to run a manual scan, I get "An unexpected problem occurred during your scan" error. I installed and ran AVG Free 2013 and it found and cleaned Trojan Horse Cryptic.CKU. I rebooted and tried to update McAfee again, no go. I ran AVG in Safe Mode and kept the log if requested. I ran DDS and GMER. It was not until after I ran those that I removed AVG. I can run new scans if that is required. Any help would be great. I do not have access to Windows disks.

Searched, but couldn?t find a thread answering this question.

How can I download W7 updates to my internet-connected laptop (W7 x64 Home) without installing, then transfer and install the Updates to a desktop workstation (having legit W7 x64 Ult, SP1 installed) which is never connected to internet?

A:Download Win7 Updates, but install onto a different PC

I've seen your question asked several times. I do not recall seeing it answered. While it is possible to manually download each applicable update, I'm not sure how you would obtain a list of applicable updates - unless you had a duplicate computer that was online.

I have to ask: Why patch a system that is not online? Why not use it just the way it is? If you fear that it could get infected via USB flash drives or CDs/DVDs, then install an antivirus tool and manually update that from time to time.

A:Windows Updates Download But Do Not Install

Hello All

I have a problem here, today I carried out an XP repair, went back to the Windows Update site where there are now 89 updates waiting. All the updates download OK but, ALL FAIL TO INSTALL.

Where do the little so and so's hide on my PC and, if I am able to locate them would I be able to install them?, or is there some other explanation for this annoying problem?

For some reason the Windows/Microsoft Automatic Updating will download the updates, but will not install. I get the message the updates failed. If I go the update articles and download the updates manually one by one, things are fine. My system is a Compaq Deskpro running Windows XP Home Edition 2002 - Service Pack 3.

Any ideas?
