Explorer.exe frequently crashes. Windows XP freezes frequently.

Q: Explorer.exe frequently crashes. Windows XP freezes frequently.

My System: Windows XP Pro SP2, ECS motherboard, Intel Core 2 Duo CPU, 2GB RAM, Nvidia video card.

Description of Problem:
For the past few months, explorer.exe has been crashing frequently. It just crashes while I am browsing directories and/or click on files, I'll get the usual series of Windows dialog boxes to report the error, and then explorer.exe will automatically restart. It doesn't happen everytime, but once the problem does kick in, it seems to happen repeatedly.

I've also been experiencing the system freezing up on me. I need to manually reboot my system in this case.

The point of this post is to eliminate malware as the cause of my explorer.exe and/or system freezing problems. Attached is my hijackthis log. Please let me know if anything suspicious is found. Thanks!

Preferred Solution: Explorer.exe frequently crashes. Windows XP freezes frequently.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

My computer is running Windows 7 Ultimate x32 and in the past weeks I had some problems with Windows Explorer that frequently crashes.

First it was happening randomly, while watching a movie or playing an RPG game. In the last two weeks the problem started to occur only when I try to copy or move files into a folder.

Let?s say that we have folder A and folder B. Folder A has some .mp3 files that I want to move in folder B. I go in folder A, select the items, apple the copy or cut functions and then attempt to double click on folder B to open it. The folder is not opening and Windows Explorer crashes immediately. After some seconds the process restarts, but if I try to move the items again it crashes.

I tried restarting Windows 7, but the problem was fixed only on the third restart of the system. After that day I did not had problems with the crashes for around five days.

The problem is the same but it got fixed after the fifth restart or so.

It is indeed annoying and if you know something about it, I will appreciate any attempts of help. If you want more information, just ask. I tried to keep the post as short as possible.

A:Windows Explorer Crashes Frequently

I don't know the cause, but my W7 machine(clean installed in October 2010) is doing the same thing. I am getting random explorer.exe crashes and ntdll.dll crashes with no apparent reason.

I don't know for certain, but it seems likely it is being caused by a recent update. Have you updated any graphics card drivers lately? I just upgraded to nVidia's 270.61 and it seems like since then my system has gone downhill. Maybe just a coincidence but in my experience the computer world rarely has those.

Hello there,

I've just recently converted from xp to 7 and i feel like all my knowledge on computers has gone.

I've only had my new laptop for 3 days and ever since i started using it i have had crashes, i do not get any error codes or BSOD's the laptop just becomes unresponsive so i have to turn the machine off by the power button.

After a certain period of time (random, sometimes crashes after a couple of hours, others a few minutes) a program or the explorer in general acts like it is loading but really has crashed and there is no way of it closing and restarting, if i do manage to get a program to close then i can't re-open it, i click on the icon but nothing appears.

Also after a certain period of time when i try to right-click on an icon on the desktop/start panel etc. the system crashes and becomes unresponsive as well.

I can manage to get the system to restart but even then (after experiencing a crash) i have to turn it off by the power button.
I realise this is very long-winded and probably won't make much sense but ever since i've gone from xp to 7 i feel like a complete novice.

I have performed various malware/registry scans to no avail in fixing the problem.

I hope somebody can provide me with anyway to sort this problem without having to send my laptop back.

Thank you.

This has been going on for the past week . Many crashes to black screen - to BSOD. Sometimes after a boot-up. Sometimes when I'm in the middle of something.
I tried swapping Power Supply - negative. I tried disconnecting accessories - negative. I uninstalled 20 programs - negative. Cleaned out Start Menu, Degrag, Cookies, Temp files, etc etc. Ran a series of SpyWare, Ad-Adware, PC Pitstop, etc etc
Uninstalled all Spyware programmes, uninstalled F-Secure Virus program & installed AVG 9.0
After a crash sometimes I have to press the Power button 2,3,4 times to get it going . Sometimes it works - other times negative.Sometimes I have to come back later in the day and with luck can get a few hours without crashing, or without a freeze which leads to a cold (button) start. So I backed everything up, ready for a full reformat/recovery - Have Recovery on both "D"partition , and a back-up Recovery CD. Tried everything to reformat/recovery. No luck in reformat/reinstall . I have done this reformat/ recovery many times inthe past . BUT this time, F2, F10, Bios change to boot from CR-Rom , etc etc etc = NEGATIVE. Negative.
Spent countless hours troubleshooting
About to give up - junk it and buy a new Computer

Hi I suggest you try reseating your ram and graphics card also test your ram,gpu and hdd not to sure what is best for gpu on a 64 bit system but you could try memtest86+ for the ram download the iso and unzip and burn to disc, you can get the hdd diagnostic from the hdd makers support site download and burn to a disc then try to boot from the disc and run the tests for memtest you need a minimum of 7 passes on each stick then swap them to the other socket and retest for the hdd the info should be on the site
use imgburn for burning the iso http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download

I am using Internet Explorer 6 SP1 under Windows 98 SE. Very frequently, when using the keyboard to enter data when using Internet Explorer, the browser crashes. This occurs frequently but not always. I would classify this problem as random.

Generally, I have several windows open, having opened them using Ctrl+N. I am also running Gozilla version 3.9.3.

A number of times I have saved the crash details using Norton Crash Guard. Here are a few of these logs:

Hello, I don't know where to begin. When I log on and my start programs run, I receive a couple different messages about something not being in the library. I would check right now before writing this, but I'm afraid my wireless connection would take too long to fix again. I've been having problems for the past week. Very irritating. Lots of time spent trying to unfold this disaster.1) I do have a hijack this log if someone would look at it. 2) Maybe two or three months ago, I updated Internet Explorer7 to IE8 and now it doesn't work at all. I'm stuck, forced to use Mozilla. 3) The wireless router IS in my house and it IS encrypted. It happens every time, SHORTLY after going into the MISSIONS tab. I have to do a hard restart or it'll stay frozen for the entire day.5) On my wireless connection... IF/When I click "repair".... It will work for maybe 15-30 seconds MAYBE!! and then it will restart my computer. 6) I can't afford to pay for help, but I do have a few rare coins I would happily exchange for some help here. When system errors are present, it can be due to one of three causes: System file corruption.
Faulting hardware.
An underlying driver problem conflicting with the system.
Run SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker to check for system file corruption.

Run the boot version of Memtest86+ paying close attention to Parts 2 and 3 of the tutorial. Also, in case Memtest86+ misses anything and comes up with no errors, run the extended version of the Windows Memory Diagnostics Tool for at least five passes. These you may want to run overnight since they take a long time to complete.

Then follow the http://www.sevenforums.com/crashes-d...tructions.html so we can help you as the information you provided was too vague to determine other possible causes.

Also, look at the post I just made for someone with a similar problem in: http://www.sevenforums.com/crashes-d...-anything.html

A:my windows 7 freezes very frequently and at random

Hi Amuraj,

My name is Harish and I work for the Social Media and Community Team at Dell.

The system freezing issue happens due to two reasons. 1. If the Harddrive is going bad 2. If the operating software is corrupt. For isolating the issue can run a diagnostic test by holding the Fn key and starting the system. If the test passes the Operating system is corrupt, if the test fails harddrive has to be replaced

Please let us know the progress

A few days ago I decided to do a clean reinstall of W10 on my PC using the Windows media creation tool. Promptly after reinstalling the OS onto my PC it continuously freezes at random intervals of time after I start - up the computer and will remain on that state not being able to do anything, prior to the reinstall I have never encountered this problem. I have installed the manufacturer's drivers for my system but to not avail the system continues to crash. Okay, so I've had my XP for...two years? The major programs I have are iTunes, Mozilla Firefox, and Microsoft Works. I don't know my RAM space, but if I check it, I will most likely freeze. Whenever I'm on the internet, it's fast for like..ten minutes, but then it freezes and I'm unable to do anything.
Oh, and when I first turn on my computer, it takes literally 10 minutes for my computer to be completely loaded. Sometimes it's more than 10. I've defragmented my files (and the lines are all..colored and looks really bad) many times, I'm doing the disc cleanup right now, and I'm removing my programs. I've deleted like ALL of my documents and stuff. I don't know what else to do! My computer runs like it's twenty years old! Please, any suggestions? I might just restart it, but I don't even know how to do that.

So I'm in a bind at the moment. On Sunday, after attempting to run Dragon Age : Inquisition, I had realized that I never updated my GPU drivers since 2012 (Catalyst 10.12).
First attempt at installation led to a crash and black screen. Subsequent attempts to uninstall via Catalyst Installation Manager (via Control Panel/Programs) were unsuccessful (got several "Error applying transforms" msg boxes).

I then downloaded Display Driver Utility to the driver and after unsuccessfully installing 15.7 which resulted in my computer freezing on the login screen (or alternatively, black screen with cursor), removing the Intel HD4000, removing 15.7 and installing 14.12, uninstalling 14.12 with the occasional bouts not being able to boot past login in Safe Mode. I realized I had 4 Windows updates I never installed.
They are (KB3064209), (KB2901983), (KB3048761), and a Intel Graphics update. After installation of the above updates, I was able to log in.

This evening however, I suffered two freezes and a failed safe mode boot before being able to get past the login screen again. I'm honestly pretty sure the reason for these freezes are my drivers, but I'm boggled on how to fix this w/o reverting to by 10.12 drivers.

Attached is the DxDiag.

Ok so basically my annoying problem is when I click on file explorer, sometimes there are no icons, so then I close the windows for a bit. Reopen it, same problem. So I close it and reopen it a bit later, and it's fixed. When the problem is happening, clicking on any folder will bring me to basically the same blank screen, with green loading bar as you see below. I ran an anti-malware and anti-virus check, and that didn't uncover anything. Any thoughts?

hello kennethklkk,
Welcome to vista forums!!!

It says that it has something to do with third party add ons. Use your Antivirus anti malware and anti spyware (if you need any FREE amazing programs let me/us know.) and do a scan to make sure your not infected. After you do this, uninstall any firefox add ons, then firefox itself.

Restart the computer.

You should be all set...

Let us know,

What is the ntdll.dll file?

Have no clue as to patterns - genuinely seems random. Previously had IE6 latest service pack loaded and it would freeze on average - 6 times a day - with no *.dmp file even though the Drwatson registry key was installed! Switched to Firefox, and immediate improvement - it now freezes randomly once every 2 days or so - often occurs when zonealarm receive green lights are on, and sometimes when many apps are open at once. Also no blue BSD would show - it just stops working - no mouse response, no keyboard response - not even Ctrl Alt Del - wait 5 minutes still nothing. Not so recently my computer started giving me problems.
My computer is quite new, I just bought around March, 2011. It's a custom-made computer.

Here are the specifications:

Motherboard - Intel Desktop Boards DH67BL Media Series
Processor - Intel CORE i5
Hard drive - Western Digital 500GB
RAM - 2 ? Kingston DIMM 2GB DDR3 (4GB)
OS - Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit

Now the problem is quite hard to explain. Sometimes, the computer crashes and
when I restart the computer, it says that no bootable devices is found, and if you let it a few minutes and start the computer again, it starts fine. Sometimes, the computer freezes and the blue screen appears. Sometimes, the computer shows some error messages and windows explorer closes and the mouse and keyboard will stop responding.

It's really very annoying. I'm really frustrated because I paid a lot of my money for this pc. I really need your help. How can I fix my pc or at least stop it from freezing.

My IE 8 crashes at least once a day. It comes up again with a restored session, but it is a pain. I am using the 32 bit version since flash isn't up for the 64 bit version yet. Is this common or a glitch with my system?

A:IE 8 frequently crashes

Hello Smudgeboss, and welcome to Seven Forums.

It may be a add-on that was installed causing issues. You might see if resetting IE8 may help, then enabling your installed add-ons one at a time to see if one them may be the culprit afterwards.

Hope this helps,

My system specs are as follows:

XP Pro, Service Pack 2
2.6 Ghz Intel Celeron
1.5 Gb DDR 184-Pin Ram
80 Gb Hard Drive
ATi Sapphire X1600Pro 256MB Video Card

I recently installed a newer driver for my video card and it came with the ATi Catalyst Control Center. I had problems with the CCC, so I deleted it and reinstalled my old driver because it was actually working. After the reinstall, my computer has been going haywire over *something* that isn't right. Every time I try to play a video or set the equalizer in Windows Media Player, my computer crashes. It also crashes when I change the resolution of my screen while in a game or program (ex: Google Earth, Battlefield 2).

My computer also crashes during the "Loading Windows" screen in the bootup. Sometimes it will restart up to 5 times before it actually logs on. I haven't changed any hardware recently, only the reinstall of my old driver (which worked perfectly in the past). I really need help because I seriously don't want to format this computer. Thanks!

Hey Guys,

My computer is acting all shaky as of late. Whenever I open a new internet browser, my computer freezes for 20 seconds. My home page has a tendency of changing and my computer takes 6 minutes to load, which feels like forever in this instant gratification world. Also something must have downloaded at some point without my knowledge called “desktop.ini”. Its on my desktop and opens whenever my computer restarts.

I do usually leave my computer on for days at a time and that I feel is the reason for all the issues. I just started using Bitdefender which seems to be blocking lots of malware, but all their pop ups to keep me aware of infected items are constantly taking over my screen because of how many items it finds, causing more of a headache.

I would request help on repeated freezing of my PC.
It has persisted for a number of weeks but getting worse.
I first thought it may be the mouse input and have changed that twice but still freezing.

I have run malwarebytes and it gave me some 'pup progs' to remove, which I did.

Freezing occurs after 5 - 10 mins use and will clear when I close such as firefox or some other prog or shut down and restart.

Frequently I get error notification about " a non responsive script" many with large number of characters in the fault message.

A simpler error message is:
A script on this page may be busy, or it may have stopped responding. You can stop the script now, open the script in the debugger, or let the script continue.

If I run a progam that takes a long time to complete, the pc will freeze. Each time I have to reboot and restart the program or backup. I have windows xp professional with sp3 installed. I have a lot of programs on my computer as well. My pc has about 4GB of memory. I am using a USB harddrive backup system along with Acronis True Image but I have also tried Bounceback backup software as well. The same thing happens. I have run registry cleaners several times but the problem continues. I would appreciate any suggestions to solve this problem. Regards, mnedil

This is a strange and extremely irritating problem I've come across just yesterday. I've spent hours and hours trying to figure out the issue with all of my ability and knowledge, but I still can't figure out what's going on. Basically, pretty much everything will stop working (including the desktop and taskbar and all applications and windows I have up) and freeze (not respond) for around 5 minutes or so and then will unfreeze. This happens way too often and is very annoying. I'd provide specs but right now I'm on my laptop trying to figure things out. It runs on Windows 7 64-bit. It's getting to the point where I can't stand using the PC anymore. Here's what I've tried so far:

- Registry cleanup and fixed issues with CCleaner
- System Restore
- Updating video drivers (except it didn't need updating)
- The repair sequence during startup.
- Scanning for Malware and Viruses, both my programs not coming up with anything after a full scan.
- Defragmentation

Thanks for your guys' help!

A:Everything freezes way too frequently.

Bring up the Task Manager, leave it on the side as you work, and see what process is eating up cpu time when it freezes.

I know this could be a possibility of overheating or hardware problem, But i was hoping you can look over my software and see if possibly it is the software creating this problem, The main time it crashes is during startup, after i type in my password. Other times, it just crashes at random times, sometimes during gaming, and othertimes during just watching a movie for 30 mins or so.

I bought a Lenovo Yoga Pro 3 in December and recently, it started to freeze, blue screen, and then black screen. The thing is that if I restart it a few times, it starts working perfectly again. However, that is a temporary solution, and after a few days, it black screens again. Also, sometimes, the screen freezes and the laptop restarts by itself (up to 4-5 times a day). Does anyone know what the problem is and how to fix it? Here is the text for the blue screen:Your PC ran into a problem and needs to restart. We're just collecting some error info, and then we'll restart for you (0% complete) Here is the text for the black screen:Default Boot Device Missing or Boot Failed.Insert Recovery Media and Hit any Key.Then selct "Boot Manager" to choose a new Boot Devie or to Boot Recovery Media Also, what is Recovery media?

The first thing I would try is to refresh your PC.
On the Charms bar, choose Settings, then:
1. Change PC Settings
2. Update & Recovery
3. Recovery
and choose the "Refresh your PC" option. This will rebuild the Windows 8.1 operating system from files kept in a separate recovery partition on your Yoga. This option will leave your personal data', and Apps, in place, but you'll have to reinstall any traditional desktop applications. Windows will give you a list of these programs, and put it into a report for you. The link to the file will be on the Desktop at the completion of the refresh.
The "Recovery Media" is a separate bootable USB or DVD that is available from Lenovo for some of their PC products. As long as you haven't deleted the recovery partition on your Yoga 3 Pro (or your SSD storage is not faulty, and the cause of this problem), then you don't need this - you have all you need in the recovery partition.
If the "Refresh" doesn't work (perhaps the OS is too corrupted), then you'll have to try a complete reinstall of Windows 8.1 from the recovery partition. This will mean that all your data and apps/application are removed. See here for instructions on how to do it using the One Key Recovery process:

HI! i have some issues with my computer here. First, my computer always hangs/freezes.
Then i would have no choice but to restart.
This happens a few times a day and only happens when i'm downloading something or when i surf the net and enter some websites. e.g. skysports.

The moment i enter the website, it hangs. And if i close a website that's having a video loading halfway, it will hang straight away. (happens on both IE and firefox)

i have a speedbit video acc. installed in my com. i'm not sure if its the problem. so i tried going to youtube and load a video, while its loading halfway, i closed it,and it still hangs even though the speedbit acc isn't running. :s

can anyone tell me what might be the problem here and how to solve it? thanks.

i ran a memtest and found that my rams are working fine. And i uninstalled speedbit video acc. however, the problem still occurs when i'm in the progress of downloading something.

my com specs:
xp sp2
MSI LGA775 motherboard
processor: intel(R) Platinum(R) D CPU 2.80 GHz
video device: RADEON x550 secondary
physical memory 1527mb
hard disc 80GB

How are you connecting to the net - guess you are in UK so are you still using a modem? Could be that the drivers or the hardware for whatever you use to connect to your ISP needs an update or replacement.

can yo go into event viewer (type event viewer in search) go to the windows log, application tab. Look for errors (they have red in left column) that refer to firefox. It will probably say "application error" in firefox and have an event ID, and source

what are they?

I have a P4 1.5, 256 MB Ram with Windows XP (home ed). It is a Cicerio; I bought it from a large retailer about a year and a half ago.

Every now and then my computer would just reboot for no reason, with no warning and no visible error message. Lately the frequency of these crashes has increased to 1-2 times per day.

I ran a virus check - nothing. I ran scan disk - nothing. I checked for spyware - nothing. I defragged and still nothing helped.

Finally I decided to reformat my Hard Drive and reinstall XP. I reformatted without any problem, but when I went to install XP, it spontaneously restarted in mid-installation.

I tried installing again, and reformating again, but each time I try it it crashes the same as before. It crashes at a different point in the installation each time.

I think I have a hardware problem. It ran fine for a long time, and nothing has been added to it. There is little to no dust inside and the temps are ok according to the BIOS.

Now I'm stuck. I don't want to start swapping out parts until it's solved, but I will if I have a list of usual suspects.

Any help would be appreciated.

Chrome browser often gets stuck and even crashes since I installed a free browser add-on named as AdSupply. I searched a lot on the google and there are many claims like this one that the add-on I installed is malware. So how can I get rid of this malware? TSG Sysinfo utility can solve this problem? The system I run is Windows 7.
