upgrade of software from 32 to 64 bit compatible version

Q: upgrade of software from 32 to 64 bit compatible version

Hey all,
I have a scenario.
Say, I have a machine with win7 64 bit installed on it.
As we all know a few software donot have 64 bit versions as yet, so say im now using a 32 bit version of a software xyz. lets call the version v1.
now say, we have newer version available for xyz which goes by the name v2.
now v2 is prepared to support 64 bit and I d obviously want to have that on my machine.
So, if I try to install v2 on my machine , what will happen???
Will v1 cease to exist and get upgraded to v2??
or will a seperate installation happen for v2 with all the corresponding files copied to a newer folder, say C:\\programfile\x64???
Will v1 and v2 coexist?

I would also like to know about the registries, whether they would be any different from the 32 bit ones!

Please answer

Thanks in advance!!

Preferred Solution: upgrade of software from 32 to 64 bit compatible version

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: upgrade of software from 32 to 64 bit compatible version

1) On 32-bit Windows, programs are installed by default into a system folder called Program Files, while OS components and shared libraries are installed into the System32 folder. On 64-bit Windows, apart from the regular Program Files folder, there is a Program Files (x86) folder for 32-bit apps. Also, in addition to the System32 folder, there is a SysWOW64 folder. Somewhat ironically, 64-bit OS components and shared libraries go into the System32 folder, while 32-bit ones go into the SysWOW64 folder.

This arrangement lets 32-bit and 64-bit versions of the same apps to be installed side-by-side on the 64-bit OS without overwriting one another’s files or accessing the wrong versions of the same library.

Registry keys specific to 32-bit apps are stored in a branch under the following key

2) Now, how exactly your particular app behaves would vary from app to app, depending on how each app is designed. E.g. 64 bit win7 has both 32 bit and 64 bit versions of IE8. By default, the 32 bit IE8 runs when you launch IE from locations like the taskbar or a hyperlink.

OTOH, AFAIK, 32 bit Office cannot co-exist with 64 bit. Of course, this may be by design because MS recommends that, for now, customers use the 32-bit version of Office since many of the common Office Add-ins will not run in the 64-bit Office environment.

So, basically I can think of 3 scenarios- one where the 64 bit app would refuse to install if the 32 bit version was already installed, two if it installed there would be conflicts/crashes, and three where both co-exist peacefully.

Hi There!

I am trying to determine what version of a Norton Internet Security upgrade to purchase. I have been able to simply renew my subscription in the past with Norton, however, the most latest Norton edition only works in concert with Win. XP. If I purchase NIS 2005 or some more current security software edition that does not have that requirement will I then be able to get my renewal and virus support definitions from Norton? Seems like this would work. Thanks for your input!!!

A:Norton Software Compatible Version(s)

My thoughts are to get rid of Norton completely and get Nod32:

Norton is a huge resource hog and over the last few years I have quit recommending their antivirus at all due to that as well as numerous other problems I have seen with it. If you go with Nod32, you will not regret the change.

Nod32 doesn't come with a firewall, but you can get the free version of Zone Alarm to take care of that part:

A:The version of this file is not compatible with the version of windows you are runnin

Hi Haruki92,

What files are you trying to transfer? Regular files (documents, photos etc) should be fine to just drag over. However some applications are not able to run in a 64-bit environment.

Please post exactly what you're transferring and a screenshot if possible.

According to the MSDN site :-When a 16-bit installer or application is launched, the following error message is displayed:
The version of this file is not compatible with the version of Windows you're running. Check your computer's system information to see whether you need an x86 (32-bit) or x64 (64-bit) version of the program, and then contact the software publisher.I have an application (SPFPC V4.0) which I used to run with no problem on XP SP2.
But when I try it on my Vista Business 64 bit system I get that message. I have tried all of the compatibility options with no success.

Maybe I am being simplistic, but I would think that if it runs OK on XP SP2 then it probably isn't a 16 bit application.

Any ideas anyone.

XP supports 16 bit applications, so there is no sound basis for your belief.

I'm trying to install some applications on a Lenovo ideapad with windows 7 home premium, 64-bit, SP1. I'm getting the following error - "The version of this file is not compatible with the the version of windows you're running." I've installed all of these specific applications (e.g. RealPlayer, Logmein, Windows 2007 Compatibility Pck File Format Converter) and many other 32-bit apps on other Windows 7 64-bit machines, including 2 other Lenovo laptops with the exact same specs, purchased at the same time, with absolutely no issue.

I thought maybe it was some kind of virus so I reformattted the laptop and I'm still getting the same issue. It's VERY frustrating. I've searched everywhere and don't see any answers. Does anyone have any idea why this is happening or how to correct it?

I am running an "Anytime Upgrade" version of Windows 7 Professional. I have since discovered that sysprep does not function (or is disabled) on "Anytime Upgrade" versions of Windows 7. In other words, if I had purchased a physical

Question: If I purchased a full retail version of Windows 7 Ultimate and upgraded my current version of Windows 7 Professional using that DVD could I then regain a working sysprep feature on my laptop?

Thank you in advance. I would upgrade to Windows 10, but my graphics card is not supported by Windows 10. I receive an error from Windows 10 Upgrade .... "Windows 10 is not compatible with your graphics card".

Any workarounds or advice would be appreciated.

I just came to the realization that a computer of mine is 64bit even though it has been running the 32bit version of Windows 7.  This came about when some curiosity lead me to the manufacturer's website seeking to learn some specific details about the
computer.  Interestingly there is a statement which says something to the effect that this particular computer was not intended for use with the 32bit version of Windows.  This causes me to assume that it was sold with the 64bit version installed
which was changed after market.  I have no idea how this might have happened insofar as I obtained the computer from a friend who was discarding it.  This friend isn't someone who would know about such things.  I did reinstall the 32bit version
of Windows when I added an SSD drive but did this thinking it was a 32bit computer because it was running the 32bit version of Windows.
While the 32bit version is working fine, I am dependent on some software where support for 32bit has been abandoned.  I'd also like to add more memory and learned that while the computer can support up to 16GB it. apparently, won't use more than 4GB
when running the 32bit version of Windows.
I have quite a bit of work invested in building out the computer with the software I'm using and it would be nice if I didn't have to redo that to upgrade it to 64bit, which is what leads to my question.

all of a sudden, while running shutdown.exe - which i've used for ages to restart my windows systems - now win7/64, i get an error message:

The version of this file is not compatible with the version of windows you're running. Check the computer's system information to see whether you need an x86 (32-bit) or x64 (64-bit) version of the program and then contact the software publisher

this may or may not be related to a BSOD that i got the previous night (which, if i remember right, made a reference to cachemanager.exe).

and if i try to run shutdown from the command prompt, i get:

Unsupported 16-Bit Application
the program or feature "\??\c:\windows\system32\shutdown.exe" cannot start or run due to incompatibility with 64-bit versions of windows.

as far as i know, this file IS 32-bit, and part of the OS.

something else has gone awry as well - quicktime gives a similar error message when trying to start iTunes.

so far i've run sfc /scannow - and poked around to see if there'd be some virus messing me up. nothing found.

Office 2013 is about to be released. You can't buy it yet, unfortunately.

Office 2010 and 2007 are both supported. Office 2003 may work, but might have issues, and anything before that is probably really risky as they are long out of support. I know for a fact that Access 97 causes problems with Windows 7 and Windows 8.

I need to know if I can use a clean install disk for Windows 7 Ultimate to upgrade from Vista or if I have to use an Upgrade version?

I'm leaning towards buying the clean install disk so that if I should loose the hard drive at some future point I could just clean install Win 7 Ultimate from the disk without having to first install Vista and then upgrade.

Regardless of which type I purchase, am I better off to buy the OEM disk from the machine manufacturer (Toshiba) or just purchase any OEM disk?

Of course, if I want Microsoft support then I need to purchase retail disks.

Thank you.

A:Upgrade version vs clean install version

I suggest the much cheaper upgrade DVD. It will do a clean install, if there is an underlying supporting version of Windows

MS has changed the rules for OEM, they are not for personal use, even if builidng your own computer.

I have Win 7 64 bit Home, OEM. If I do any anytime upgrade to Win 7 64 bit Pro, does that change the OEM to a full version?

Reason I ask, I may want to change motherboards, to a different brand, and with an OEM I wouldn't be able to reactivate it.

A:Anytime Upgrade from OEM version to full version??

I don't even think you can get a Windows 7 Retail any more.

My understanding you can up grade from Home Premium but you will have to pay for the Up grade to Pro OEM builders.

Their might be other members with a better idea.

I personally don't like upgrades and just buy OEM builders and do a clean install.

I'm trying to help a friend who is even less technically inclined than myself with a Dell laptop a few years old running Windows XP. Is Avast anti virus and this version of Spyware Doctor compatible? Will having both of them on the same computer cause any problems?
Thank you, help is greatly appreciated.

A:Avast and free version of Spyware Dr. compatible?

The most recommended anti-spyware programs here on TSG are Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and SuperAntiSpyware. You can get both for free and run weekly scans. If you want real-time scanning, you'll have to get the paid versions. However, remember not to run more than one in real-time... They both work with Avast.

WOW, talk about having a bad year and a really bad week.

Long story short, use Migrate Easy to move the Windows 7 OS (w/Sp1) to a newer SSD drive and everything seemed to worked fine as this morning I still had Windows Desktop on the PC, for some reason I did a restart and it did not wanted to start so I pulled the old Win 7 DVD and got the following error: see image 01

So of course I suspected a corrupt registry or MBR when I did the migration and/or swap... no biggie I thought, let me pull out my Win 7 DVD and do a system repair, it should take but a few minutes.

Well, here I am 5 to 6 hours later with a doozy of a problem. No matter what I do or try I keep coming up with the same error (see Image02)... I have tried my Original Win 7 Ultimate 64bit DVD. I have also downloaded a clean copy of Win 7 Ultimate 64bit w/SP1 ISO and burn it to a DVD and last but not least... tried the Win7 USB/DVD Tool and tried to recover from a USB stick. I have also swapped back to the original SSD and same issue and error. I have tried disconnecting the 1.5TB Data HDD just in case that was causing all the commotion but to no avail.

So finally I decide to give up the ghost, throw the towel and make, yet, a new installation of the Win 7 OS and I can not even do that as I get the following error when I do... see FullInstall-Error image

NO, I can not get into Windows or use Safe Mode or even get to the options screen where you can go to the Command Prompt or check the Memory or do a system... Read more

Hello, my Laptop recently got a problem logging on due to an RPC server problem.
Though google I found that I can easily fix that through msconfig.

I have a Nvidia 9500 GT wich works fine in XP. I upgraded to Win 7 Ultimate 32 bit. The correct driver for the card is 280.26 according to the Nvidia site. The card is compatible with Win 7. However, when I attempt too install the card, it says "NVIDIA graphics driver not compatible with this version of Windows". The Nvidia utility also detects an error when it tries to detect the card.

I suspect there may be a chipset issue?

A:NVIDIA graphics driver not compatible with this version of Windows

Welcome to Windows Seven Forums.

You might want to check whether you downloaded the 64-bit version of the graphics driver instead of the 32-bit one. It's an easy mistake to make as I know only too well, having done it myself in the past.

As for your chipset drivers, it won't hurt to get the latest ones for the 32-bit version of Windows 7.

Just joined, am at beginner level. I have been to three other places in the past months trying to get an answer to this question, including the firefox site, where my question was marked solved without my permission! I am on an older computer, and it works fine and I cannot afford a new one, and don't want a new one. My processor is about 927 mhz. I have something called adobe shockwave player. It is version 9. Firefox is my browser. For months a yellow bar at the top of my screen has been telling me to upgrade to adobe flash 11. What is with all the names, adobe flash, flash player, shockwave flash; are they all the same thing?? Anyway, this yellow bar is almost continuous. The problem with upgrading to flash 11 is that it requires a much faster processor than mine, and too much memory. So I have been trying to upgrade to something in the version 10 flash thing, but when I have been able to find older versions, they never give the system requirements.
I need to know what the system requirements are. I need to know if the version is light on memory. And at these rare sites that have old things, it is a manual download, and they then tell you to 'unzip' the file. I have no idea of what that means. I would much appreciate help with this. Please don't tell me to get another processor, another browser, etc. I need to solve this problem, and this is the equipment I have. Thank you.

- I'm able to launch other 2010 programs/files (like Excel, Powerpoint) without issue.
- Confirmed file associations appear to be normal.
- Attmepted to launch word in safe mode -- same error.

Appreciate any help on this particular issue (or pointing me to a place to read up on this one).

Was organizing the SATA connectors in case disconnecting/reconnecting a few HDDs, one with the W7 64 bit OS (H1). Then disconnected all HDDs leaving a new one and installed W7 64 bit on it (H2) with only it connected. Performed fine. Disconnected it (H2) and reconnected the first one (H2) and W7 would not launch, so inserted OS disc and it would repair something (I have no idea what as it did not indicate, I found that to be particular helpful by MS) and then W7 would launch. From there on, any time I switched between the two drives each having the respective OS (H1 or H2), the OS disc would need to be used to repair the unspecified problem and launch Win. Did this a few times until the first OS (H1) the disc no longer could 'repair' what ever needed to be fixed and the famous message follows:

"This version of System Recovery Options is not compatible with the version of Windows you are trying to repair. Try using a recovery disc that is compatible with this version of Windows"

The real (dis)interesting part to all of this, is that yes important data is off on drives other than the OS drive though did have a few files with mostly shortcuts on the desktop. In accessing the first OS (H1) via the second (H2), after fighting through the "access is denied" and "ownership rights" UAL BuSines, only half of the files that were on the desktop are actually in the desktop folder/directory. Is it worth fixing the OS on H1 to get into Windows to see if ... Read more

Using the Recovery Disk multiple times on different partitions did not help the situation. I would guess that your boot partition is messed up because of that. Post a screen shot of your expanded column Disk Management using your Snipping Tool and we will see what you have. Screenshots and Files - Upload and Post in Seven Forums

so i got a couple of bluescreen,i used whocrashed to check and 3 of them were caused by nv4_disp.dll,so i updated my nivida driver..and still, today i got it,how do i update this driver?

On Sat 2009/11/21 a.m. 05:22:21 your computer crashed
This was likely caused by the following module: nv4_disp.dll
Bugcheck code: 0x1000000A (0x912815FF, 0x2, 0x1, 0x80702A8E)
Error: Unknown
Dump file: H:\WINDOWS\Minidump\Mini112109-03.dmp
file path: H:\WINDOWS\system32\nv4_disp.dll
product: NVIDIA Compatible Windows 2000 Display driver, Version 191.07
company: NVIDIA Corporation
description: NVIDIA Compatible Windows 2000 Display driver, Version 191.07

A:wth is this??NVIDIA Compatible Windows 2000 Display driver, Version 191.07

it may not be the driver it might be something conflicting with it causing the NV4 disp to fault its often the case , however the best course of action is a reinstall , but for now stay away from the 19 set of NV drivers

get these NVIDIA DRIVERS 186.18 WHQL

download and install this Guru3D - Driver Sweeper and read the instructions carefully

uninstall your drivers in control panel , reboot into safemode then run and use driver sweeper (in safemode) then reboot and install your newly downloaded drivers reboot again and test

let us know how you get on

So, to make a long story short, I have a computer I'm supposed to fix for a friend. It gets lots of graphics artifacts, black boxes, colored dots, etc. It has an Asrock motherboard (an unusual board with both AGP and PCI-E) and a GeForce 7900gs (AGP).

After much reading, I have determined that this is a solved problem . Its a driver problem on Asrock boards with nvidia AGP graphics cards. The solution is to install a (very) old version of the nvidia drivers (forceware 97.52). This is described by user Brainwashed here:
Wonky Screen Corruption Problem

But I am having trouble finding and installing a win7, 64bit version of this driver. I know one exists, because in the very next reply in that thread, user Vighi says he found one for Vista64, and it worked (he has win7). But he doesn't give a link to it.

I tried to find one on my own with google. I found this one:
v97.52 VISTA 64bit | Nightly Build - LaptopVideo2Go Forums

But its on a laptop video website, and might be for a laptop video card. Its also a "modified Inf" driver, whatever that means. Anyway, I ran the setup file, but it wouldn't install. In safe mode, it said it couldn't find a driver compatible with my hardware. In normal mode, it says I have the wrong operating system, that it won't work with a 64bit OS.

Thoughts? Its really frustrating having identified the problem, and found a solution that almost everyone says worked for them, but not be able to make it work myself.

Thanks guys!

You can use the vista driver if you install it in compatibility mode

Right click the installer>properties>compatibility>chose vista.

I need Safesign to recognize my security token allowing me to sign documents. When I installed Threshold 2 it uninstalled version informing it was incompatible. If I try to reinstall it fails to register dlls.

I managed to install the 32 bits version but now no Windows document signer I use recognizes the token. Fortunately I found a Java signer that does but is not practical for mass signn8ng as I have to edit a bat file every time I need to mass sign documents.

Does anyone know if there is a new version of Safesign out there? The developer site just says to contact the credentials provider who still has the same version I use.

Which is the better option?

A:Upgrade version vs regular version

Hello Mitchball, and welcome to Seven Forums.

The full (regular) version will allow you to do a clean install easier and will not require you to have a qualifying current version of Vista like the upgrade version will. Otherwise they are the same version of Windows 7.

I like the full version better for ease of use and installation.

Hope this helps,

Hi, I want to 'Start Over' on my computer and wipe the whole thing clean. Problem is I have no Operating system disks, and no driver disks. Therefore, I have to purchase a new operating system. Right now I have microsoft windows XP Professional. I am going to buy XP Home edition b/c I dont want to spend that much money. Can I buy the upgrade version or do I need to buy the full version. Remember that I need to format the drive. Thanks.

A:Full version or Upgrade Version??

If you don't have any XP discs and you format your drive, you will need the full version. What you could do is get the upgrade and install that first, then remove your XP.

EDIT: Sorry, it's late here and I really should be in bed. For some reason I was thinking of Vista Home Basic. What I said still applies, however. If you have an earlier version of Windows, eg, '98, you can reformat your drive then install the upgrade. It will simply ask you to insert your '98 disc to check that the upgrade is valid. It's a long time since I installed my upgrade version of XP, but it was quite happy when I inserted an upgrade version of '98.

I use MS 2010, and in my Excel work book I have a list which works fine for me. But when I send it to others, the cell with the list in does work. - By not working I mean that there is no "arrow" to access the different variables that the list should show.

I assume this is a compatibility issue. Was just wondering if there were any known solution.

I have a copy of MS Office Professional 2003 that has been installed and working fine for 2 years. Now (perhaps as a result of a Microsoft update ?) I am told that it is not genuine and will fail to work in 10 days. The invalidity is confirmed at http://www.microsoft.com/Genuine/ It seems this is part of a bunch of product keys that purport to be one in a series of a volume licence but were really stolen.

Do I need to buy a full retail edtion of Office Professional 2007 or will an upgrade version be acceptable to the activation code ?

A:Will an upgrade version of MS Office see a hookey one as a qualification for upgrade

If you purchased this as a legal, retail version, then contact Microsoft about the false notification.

Not long ago, I bought a new pc with windows 7. I found out that a lot of programs I used to use are not going to work. Not a big deal so far but, kind of a bummer.
I usually use cnet for my downloads, it's setup nicely with ratings and such, and I'm familiar with it...... You can sort results by OS as well... and when you limit it to windows 7, the list gets a LOT smaller. I've randomly tested a few that didn't specifically say Windows 7 and sure enough, quite a few will not work for me.
I don't really want to mess with settings too much, especially if they're settings that I would have to change back and forth AT ALL...
The other day I was looking for pinball and so far can't find anything that will work for me. pinball isn't a huge deal and it's definitely not the only thing I've had issues with. It's just the most recent thing I was thinking about.
I'm sure people will continue to make newer, compatible software... it's just a little frustrating at times I guess. I'm enjoying Windows 7 overall though.

A:compatible software

I'm really not sure what you're talking about. I've yet to find an app that worked with XP or Vista that won't run in Windows 7 (32 bit).
