internet connection problem using vmware (host: windows xp, guest: redhat linux)

Q: internet connection problem using vmware (host: windows xp, guest: redhat linux)

I have recently installed Redhat Enterprise V.3 as guest on Windows XP host using vmware.

After adding the necessary lines in the 2 ifcfg-eth0 files, the device eth0 is finding the IP correctly at boot time (or by usinf ifup eth0) and I can use folder sharing between the host and the gust. However I still can't connet to the Interent from the guest.

My windows host internet conection is working fine.
I had it working for a short peiod of time on the guest. (I was using VM - settings - customized - eth bridged-default)

Has anyone seen this before?

Preferred Solution: internet connection problem using vmware (host: windows xp, guest: redhat linux)

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi there
Workstation Version 10.2 Host running these distros - same observations for both hosts. Opensuse / Linux Mint 17 both 64 bit. Guest is windows 8.1 update 1.

I seem on the df -h command get a /tmp file around 4GB which is 95% allocated. This goes down to 0% when the vm is powered off.

I can't seem to find any way to increase the size of this file or configure it in any way -- is this just VMware using disk space or will my Guest eventually fail because lack of disk space. There's actually plenty of space on the HDD itself. !!

Hi there
after getting / enabling 3D and hardware acceleration to work on Windows Guest from OPENSUSE 13.1 Linux HOST the UNIT mode application menus work just fine

One caveat -- The Metro store app starts automatically -- you have to close that and remove from windows task bar when you leave unity mode.

Screenshot enc with IE11 running in unity mode on Linux KDE desktop with application menus working.

Help! I've set up a null modem serial cable connecting my old dinosaur Windows 98 PC to my new XP laptop. I set up the Direct Cable Connection on both PCs and set up the 98 PC as host and the XP laptop as guest. The guest laptop shows that it is connected to the 98 PC (in network connections) and the 98 host PC shows an active connection with the guest. I've also set the host PC to allow sharing and have set the "C" drive to be shared with full rights. However, when I check "network places" on the guest XP laptop, nothing appears at all. Is there something I'm missing? I'm not exactly computer illiterate but have no experience setting up networks or simple connections. I appreciate any help someone can give me! Thanks.

A:Direct Cable Connection -- Windows 98 (host) to Win XP (guest)

Just go buy a Crossover (RJ-45 or Network) cable, usually orange, and direct connect the two with that. Should be alot easier, just make sure both have NetBEUI installed, and you should be good.

I am using VitualBox 4.1.8, on Windows 7 (32 bit) Ultimate. I have installed Scientific Linux 6 on VirtualBox.

Now what I want is, I want to bypass USB drive detection in Windows 7, and to be directly detected by Scientific Linux. Let's say I have a USB drive infected with bad*** viruses, that are like a puppie on Linux.

So when I plug in my drive, how can I disable detection of it in Windows 7,but not in SL 6, and use it there so that I can remove the pesky viruses or do whatever.

I have enabled USB controller in VirtualBox.

Can anybody tell me what on earth is going on here? I've got a VMWare guest (Linux Mint 17.2 KDE, 64 bit, running on VMWare Workstation 11) with Samba shares. Access from the Host as well as other devices in the LAN always worked flawlessly. But all of a sudden it has stopped working. The connection from the host to the guest is unstable at best but mostly not possible at all. I cannot even ping the guest. But what's strange is the fact that I can access the shares from my phone and I can also ping the guest from my phone. But it's also not possible to ping the host from the guest, even if I disable the hosts firewall. What can possibly be the reason for this?

Here is some info about the network:

- Router IP: (FritzBox 7490)
- Host IP:
- Guest IP: (bridged, gets the IP from the router)

P.S. It's no homegroup, it's an "ordinary" Windows network.

Hi there

after no problem with all the various updates on Windows 1607 I've really got a strange one now

Laptop (HP envy) has lost Wifi and Internet connectivity on the Windows HOST - but a Linux VM I'm running on the same laptop has absolutely NO problem connecting to both 2.4 and 5 GHZ wifi networks.

The Wifi card in the computer is a bog standard Intel Dual Band Wifi adapter AC7265 -- been running fautlessly ever since the start of the W10 program.

Not sure why this adapter should suddenly stop working - I've checked the VM and it hasn't "hogged" the device by disconnecting it from the host.

Reverting back to BEFORE latest updates were applied -- all working again.

(No changes of any kind were made to the Linux VM so it's not the VM that's at fault here).

Can't understand why this update should hose up a perfectly decent reliable piece of working hardware !!!!!!.

A:1607 - no Wifi on HOST but Linux VM has no problem with Internet !!!

Not knowing VMware, I was just wondering if it has a similar setting like this in Hyper-V:

When the option highlighted in above screenshot is selected in virtual switch properties, the virtual machines using this switch can connect to Internet but host has no Internet.

Hi there

Windows 10 build 9879 with the latest updates running as a VM on Windows 8.1 host using VMware workstation 11 or vmplayer 7 won't attach USB devices - only USB devices connected at power on seem to be recognised.

I upgraded a W8.1 system to W10 but I'll try later with a brand new install --- I don't expect any change though.

I've also tried both WITH and WITHOUT the 3D / hardware acceleration checkbox enabled --no difference.

Windows 8.1 runs fine as a VM on W7 host if you are coming from W7. Same problem though if you run W10 from a W7 host.

A:Windows 10 on Windows 8.1 Host and Vmware - USB problem

Don't you think a VMware forum would be more appropriate? It is a problem with their software.

A hypervisor normally tries to grab your device when it is introduced (from Windows host in your case, OSX in mine) and then offer it to the guest (10 in both cases). USB2 works for me but not USB3. In my case I use virtualbox and it doesn't support USB3. I know this because I asked the developers. This is a problem with the VM software (one end or the other) not Windows. Windows 8, 8.1 and 10 installed on real hardware all recognise USB 2 and 3. And USB 1 works on Windows XP for all I know if such devices still exist.

Hardware acceleration has nothing to do with connecting USB devices BTW. It is for graphics and normally (ime) makes things worse.

I don't need help, I just wanted to post my solution.
I recently setup the latest version of Vmware player on Ubuntu 13.04 and found myself unable to download the tools for it. error try again later or something along those lines. I searched about online for answers but google only presented 1 relevant topic and it didn't have a solution. Anyways I've discovered how to get around this, it's quite obvious really, I feel dumb for taking so long to figure it out. Lauch VMware player as root, then the tools will download successfully. Hopefully this will save someone a world of heart-ache.

I have use Windows XP constantly but am no longer secure on the internet. I was going to partition my hard drive and install Ubuntu so I can safely access the internet and email with Ubuntu. However, there does not seem to be a way to boot both XP and Ubuntu simultaneously and switch back and forth quickly. It seems I have to exit one OS and reboot the other.
Surfing the net I ran across VirtualBox which seems like a great way to run both systems simultaneously. However, I do not know if both operating systems are still completely independent then. Can I install and use Google Chrome in Ubuntu running as a virtual machine, and is XP then immune from hacking?
From an earlier post on this site, "Can XP be hacked if I am logged off from the internet?" I said
"My local computer store technician tells me that if my computer is hard-wired by an Ethernet wire connected to the internet, my computer can still be hacked and a hacker can get into XP even though I do not log onto the internet with XP.
AngryRaisin replied, (Thank you by the way):
"If you disable your internet adapter in the device manager there is almost no chance of getting hacked except for you turning the adapter back on and forgetting that you turned it back on."
That brings up the question as to whether if I turn the internet adapter in the device manager in XP off, will Chrome still work in Ubuntu? What, if any, features of XP does a virtual machine use? I read that the virt... Read more

Hi there

I usually run a LINUX HOST for testing Windows VM's - but I need to test some new releases of various Linux distros so I've created some VM's --easy enough and running them on a Windows Host.

However I can't attach a USB drive with a Linux file system (XFS) to the VM as the Windows HOST rejects the HDD wanting me to format it !!. There's 2.7 TB of media files on it - I want to test running media server in a VM.

Anybody know how to bypass the Windows nag prompt about the HDD and be able to attach it direct to the VM.

(The other way round is no problem -- never a problem loading NTFS HDD's on to Linux machines -- however the NTFS file system is SLOW compared with XFS -- on USB3 device on Native windows transfer rate of 1 TB of files from fast NTFS HDD to NTFS USB3 device is max 82 Mib/s - average for whole transfer. On same machine with Native Linux and XFS to XFS (using same HDD's and USB 3 port avg speed is 350 mib/s !! -- HUGE difference !!!).

Note I have to have a Windows Host for this --I know I could run Linux VM's from a Linux Host but in this case I do have to use a Windows Host as that will be the destination system at the end of testing.

BTW I'm running VMWARE workstation 12.1 on W10 Pro Host.

It seemed to me that April was the last month where support would be available for RedHat Linux 9 ( support for previous versions having been dropped since last year I believe ).

If upon installing RedHat 9, I create a new account for RedHat network, I can still get updates via up2date ( if the account type is set to "demo" ).

I'm not complaining or anything as I find up2date to be a very usefull tool & the longer I can get it to work the better.:grinthumb

First thing to try is clearing the CMOS memory. There is a jumper for this on the motherboard.

I have an old Lexmark 2050 Colorfine inkjet printer (16 bit) that runs fine on Win95/98 platforms. I have no other printers available & cannot configure this driver to the host Win XP Pro SP2 OS w/ Pentium IV CPU 2.8 GHz, as XP does not support the driver for this printer. Except for this printing issue, I have successfully installed and operated Win98 SE as a VM using VPC 2007 SP1, spending many hours configuring, updating, polling, reading blogs & tips, etc, etc, all to no avail (IEEE-1284 secure both ends, 'sc config spooler start= disabled' & 'net stop spooler' no results either). I do not expect to network this system either, as the XP host will not allow/load the Lexmark driver. Why wont the VM capture and print to standard (378h-37Fh, IRQ 7, Bidi) LPT1? The printer control program responds graphically processing the print job within the VM environment; but the printer queue accessed through VM Control Panel remains empty (pause function also unresponsive via Control Panel). Is there a reliable software solution/trick for this problem, or am I attempting the impossible? Is it because the CPU does not support virtualization? All of my other applications, MS Office 2000, Adobe 6.0, etc, run fine on the VM. Just cant get the bloody system to print Grrrrrrrrrrr! Can anyone help this blind squirrel find a nut? A:LPT1 problem on guest Win98 w/ XP host on VPC 2007

Since my last post I formatted HD, reinstalled host XP Pro SP2, VPC 2007 SP1 & guest Win98SE among many other "blind squirrel" attempts to get Lexmark 2050 operational. Steve Jain offers some helpful tips in his blogs, & by many online accounts a physical printer "should" function from a guest OS w/o host driver. I've read "standard" LPT1 must be configured in VPC console before installing virtual OS; which I've done. I have also established a MS loopback adapter network with print sharing enabled & firewall disabled; still all to no avail. Lexmark 2050 runs virtually, but not physically; print job does not reach VM control panel printer queue, however printer control program detects on/off line status of printer (I guess due to a dedicated bidi comm line). Can it be NTFS vs FAT of WinXP vs Win98? Or every time the printer is turned on, the host's Hardware Wizard detects it; could it be the HW captures LPT1 before the guest does? No easy task to silence HW. Are other WinXP "services" from "typical" installation suspect of capturing LPT1? It would be a shame to discard an otherwise functional printer; after all this is the cause of the "bigger picture" - the amount of unnecessary waste/polution Americans generate! No one can ever accuse Lexmark of "going green"!

Recently a problem started on my 4 computer network. I'm sharing my DSL connection via Windows XP ICS. Everything was running very smooth, then one day, out of blue, the client computers became unable to open internet sites...

To be exact, most of the the sites... All machines can open google and msn without any problems, but any other site does not open or takes 2 hours to open one page... The host's connection to internet works very well, and the network works just fine (file transfers, printing etc...)

Anybody has an idea why this could be?

PS: My norton firewall keeps alerting me about a subseven attack, I have searched thru the registery and tried several different scanners, did not find a trace of subseven, any connections to my problem maybe?

Best regards,

I understand that you can share your internet connection on Linux with your Windows computer.
Now I was wondering if this would make browsing on your Windows computer SLIGHTLY safer, or if there is some way that the Linux computer could be used to filter the connection to the Windows computer somehow. By this I mean for extra protection against viruses/attacks.

Welcome to TSF!!

I don' have any experience with Acronis drive tool. However, you said that the xp disk and your livecd aren't booting. This would leave me to believe that there is a problem with the drive itself. Has anything booted up since you used the Acronis tool? Are disks spinning up and then spinning down, or any other problems similar to that?

e1k62x64.sys is a driver for your Intel 82577LM Gigabit NIC
Please do this:
- download a fresh copy of the network drivers from http://downloadcenter.intel.com

Hi Saeidmscs

You have no Restore Points at all? Not even the ones that Window's makes by itself? are you sure?

Try booting into Safe Mode to check:
1) Start your PC and spam F5 until a screen asking you to select your OS appears,
2) Press F8
3) Select "Safe Mode"
4) In the Start Menu type System Restore
5) Click "Restore your Computer to an earlier point in time

Windows makes Restore Points for itself automatically every few days or when it installs updates, so unless you have Restore turned off, then its unlikely you have NO restore points. Post back with your findings

Hi everyone,

I am trying to set up a VPN from my Windows 7 desktop to my Windows 8 laptop for file sharing.
I can make the connection work and all that.
But for some reason, when I connect to my host via VPN, my host loses internet connection. The connection status is still active but no webpages load.
This is all when both the laptop and desktop is in the same LAN. Since I am not at my desktop when they are on two different routers, I cant test what happens when I am remote.
I read that guests can sometimes lose connection because of the "Use host's default gateway" option but since my host is losing connection, I am not sure what it is.

Do I need 2 network interfaces to properly set up a VPN? I am currently just using my motherboards ethernet port (Asus P8P67)

Any insight would be much appreciated.

A:Windows 7 Host loses internet connection when connected to VPN

This is the only answer I see for this type of problem.

Sounds like you need to disable the option Use default gateway on remote network. You can find this by clicking the Advanced button in the properties page of Internet Protocol Version 4 (or 6) of your VPN connection.

Hi, what is the RAID controller on the P51, and where to find drivers for it for Windows 10, Linux and VMware? (I could only find a user, on some forum, posting driver for Windows 10, but I prefer to download them from the source).

I apologize if there is a separate thread for Hyper-V running on Windows 8.1 vs this Server thread.  Couldn't find one specific to Hyper-V on Windows 8.1.
We have had for months now 3 Windows 8.1 workstations running Hyper-V with Windows 7 guest OS's. These guest were used to support clients that required a rather tight VPN connection. Suddenly last week all 3 machines has the same issue.
The guest no longer have internet connectivity.  One workstation has Broadcom NIC other 2 have Intel.  It's as if some Windows patch did something that caused the Virtual Switch to stop working.
Have blown away the VM's, dropped the Virtual Switch.  Ran updates.  Recreated the Virtual Switch and built new VM.  Still same condition.
The host to continues to connect to network and internet without issue.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

A:Windows 8.1 Hyper-V host, Windows 7 guest lost network connectivity.

There is a Win8 forum here (for future ref)
Is this in a corporate environment?  If so, were any changes made to the switches?  I've seen environments where the switch is locked down to only allow one MAC/IP per port, which knocks off any VMs.
Are you getting any DHCP information? Can you assign a static IP and get connectivity?

Hello EightForums administrators and other members

Today, I installed Linux Mint 13 to try some appliactions, programs and other good things.
I downloaded it normally , followed guide from this forum and after installing it I don't have network connection.

I tried with all type of network switches and activated Legacy Network Adapter but it don't work (I configured in network adapter for ex. External Network 1 , I want to say it's not say : Not Connected in VM Settings).

When I turn it Linux Mint says : Disconnected - you are now offline.

How to configure network and the Internet to work with Linux Mint VM ?

Thanks in advance and please answer soon.

I'm new to Hyper-V myself but I think there are 2 guides you should follow:
Hyper-V ? Create Linux Virtual Machine in Windows 8

How to use (vista example):
Hyper-V - How to Use in Windows 8

And there is someone that manages to add network to Vista so maybe you can apply that to LMDE.

Good luck

Hi all,
I am running RHEL4 as Guest OS in Dell studio 1555 laptop using VMWare Work Station with Windows XP SP3 as host OS in my Dell Studio 1555 model. But I am not able to set the display properly in RHEL4 which can perfectly fit to the laptop screen so that I can get rid of the troublesome job of scrolling to view the full page. I have at present chosen These options.
Monitor Type: LCD panel 1600 X 1200
Video Card: VESA driver (generic)
Resolution: 1600 X 1200
Color Depth: Millions of Colors

I tried various other options. But nothing else seems to be suitable. Do I have to install some dedicated driver to get the resolution option of 1600 X 900 which is the Display resolution of my Host OS (Windows XP). Dell Studio Laptops use ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570 Display Adapters for 1555 model.

Can you please suggest me which option should I choose in RHEl 4 to get the 1600 X 900 resolution option and get rid of this problem?

Hi All,

On a rock solid machine (to date) I got a BSOD. During this time I was using Unity (VMWare Pro), and the host crashed (not the client VM).

I did try the tool at http://www.osronline.com/, which seems to claim that the culprit was steam.exe, but I'm not sure that makes sense.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi All,
I have started this post a year back and due to some issues i was not able to enter into techspot and now i see that it is closed, the original post is available in topic114654 (sorry i am not allowed to post links here )

Let me just give an excerpt from my previous posts to giv a better idea...

"I am using dial up internet connection. I would like to use the Internet from the guest account. I just dont want to enter into the administor account and connect to the internet and switch back to the guest account to use the internet. So I want to setup permissions for the guest account to make a dial up connection..what should i do to set the permissions..."Click to expand...

I dont want to create a Local user account(ofcourse,it is an alternative)...

when i open the internet connections icon from the control panel in guest account, no file is visible, though when i refresh the page, I get the following error dialog message,

From my past year experience, i learnt that running 'Rasphone.exe' file in system32 folder helps me to dial the default connection... but still i feel that its not safe to access the system32 folder daily... Is there any alternative for this..

In Win8.1 Pro as host, with vmware player 6.02, Ubuntu 12 or 14, server or desktop guest:

Network adapter set to Bridge. The guest OS installs just fine. Guest gets an IPv4 address from DHCP server on the same subnet as the host. Guest can connect to the Internet for downloads. Host connects to the Internet. Yet a ping from host to guest or guest to host results in destination unreachable. Occurs even if NIS "smart firewall" is turned off.

I've used essentially the same setup with a Win7 host with no issues. Any clues why the two won't talk to one another?

[fwiw, I bounced off Hyper-V when I saw how sluggish it was compared to vmware player. Hope it's not the better solution!]

A:Cannot ping Ubunto guest in vmware player

Hi there

1) Check your router -- some routers block Ping
2) Check firewall on LINUX guest -- probably best while testing to turn it off -- people forget that default Linux installs - especially for the common distros (Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, Mint, OPENSUSE) have the Linux firewall enabled. - I'll bet a lot of people are surprised that Linux even HAS a built in firewall !!!

3) Does the ping work when you Ping via hostname or are you pinging via IP address. I've had an instance where pinging by Hostname gives the WRONG IP address -- re-boot simply fixed that.

4) IPV6 might be in the mix somewhere but this isn't normally a problem on internal LANS - in any case Host name resolution should fix this.

(BTW for Linux sharing SAMBA is excellent -- there's a good GUI tool for Ubuntu type distros (debian based). I think it's called system-config-samba. Saves all the messing about with configuration files althougk you WILL need to add users via sudo -a usename for the users you want for your shares).

Hi, I am running VMWare Player on an i5 -x64 laptop running win8.0 and want to buy win 7 Home to be the Guest OS for the Player.

Do I need to get the x64 or the x86 version of win7? Either x64/x86 will be fine for my needs once installed and running in the Player.

I posted this on the VMWare forums but have been totally ignored. {sigh}

Using VMWare Player 12

Problem host machine is a Desktop server AMD 2x 2380 (2.5G quad core) Opteron 16G RAM 64 bit 320g SSD Windows 10 with virtualization enabled.

Compared to a notebook AMD Phenom II (2.9 G dual core) 6G RAM 64 bit Windows 10 320g HD with virtualization enabled.

My test program is DOS CAD which I run in a window on XP. I have made a test program so that my testing is exactly the same. The program loads a fair sized drawing, sizes it to fit the screen then hides hidden lines at the end of which it appends a log file as to date stop and start times. I know it is old but I have 100s of hours of programming involved in this program, which I wouldn?t live long enough to replace.

The guest is XP 800G RAM 40G HD and 1 core.

The problem machine is the Desktop I?ve been knocking my head on the for the last 3 months now and am about ready to go back to 2 computers (Linux and XP). Running the test program it will finish in less the 2 minutes on the notebook (Phenom II) running in a VMWare 12 Virtual machine, compared to more than 10 minutes on the desktop.

The desktop has no problem running the program directly, using a bootable DOS thumb drive it can boot directly to DOS where it takes much less than 2 minutes to hide the lines and uses the entire screen. Which is another item which will be addressed if I can get the speed up.

Hi there
Running Unity mode fails in W8.1 update 1 -- The store app just runs in Full screen and you can't close it - it just re-starts again.

If you disable the Storte app then another Metro app starts in full screen and does the same thing.

W7 and XP Virtual machiunes work just fine in Unity mode.

(BTW no problems if you are not using Unity mode). This problem happens whether the Host is a PC or a Mac with fusion. It happens with vmware - haven't tried VBOX).

Top screen W8.1 Metro app in Full screen not allowing any other app to run even if you select from menu.

Bottom screen Windows XP Sp3 - menu visible on Host desktoip - applications can run on Host desktop - That's the way it is supposed to work.
