Headpone/ main speaker problem & BSODs

Q: Headpone/ main speaker problem & BSODs

My problem is that recently my headphones and pc speakers arent qorking properly. normally when the headphones arent plugged in the speakers should play sound and when the headphones are plugged in, the speakers mute and sound goes to the headphones.

well now its one or the other. when i boot, if the headphones are in, sound only comes to them and when they are unplugged there is nothing. same for the speakers at boot. the "playback devices" menu recognizes when the headphones are plugged in but sound still streams to speakers unless it is booted with them plugged in.

more info. a while ago i uninstalled realtek and used the computer without it for about 6 months fine. then i realized it was still hiding on the computer and tried to re-install it. it worked until i started getting BSOD's with an AVG update. now realtek is hidden with no way to access it though it's drivers are still used in adobe audition and the speaker icon says im using the stock 'high definition audio device'. i feel like this has something to do with this.

any suggestions?

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hope I'm in the right place.I want to find out if I can switch from Headphones to Main Speakers, or Back without having to keep going into Volume Control Options and resetting the Default (what a Hassle)??I just purchased Logitech G390 Headphone/Microphone for Using with Skype and My Online Games. I have a Gigabyte MoBo w/High Definition Audio, Main Speakers are the Logitech Z5500.And on a Rare Occasion it would help if I could Have the Headphones On with the Main Speakers On too. The Case has a Audio Control, However it only works with a Pin-Type Jack for Headphone,This G390 uses PnP USB 2.0.Can someone steer me down the right path if there is such a thing?

First of all, the problem occurred after upgrading to Win10. What I noticed first was that strange looking audio driver(FIRST PICTURE BELOW). I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the driver but it only dissapeared and appeared looking the same. Another thing I have noticed was that I don't see the Beats audio icon to adjust some settings. I did installed it and maybe I heard a slight difference. But the sound was low. I tried solutions I could find here(HP forums) that were related to my problem. But none of them fixed my problem, only installed the Beats audio drivers(which is good). After opening device manager I saw this(I opened it after all the installations I made)The properties of High Definition Augio Device It would be great if someone of the experts here could help me out. Or maybe some customers have encountered similar problem and fixed it.

A:Cannot hear sound from the main speaker(Beats audio)

Hi: The High Definition Audio device is the Intel HDMI audio device that needs a driver installed. It has nothing to do with the Beats Audio not working. Here's what I recommend you do to install the Intel HD audio device with the ! mark. Download and install this free file utility. The 2nd file on the top of the page is for 64 bit. http://www.7-zip.org/ After you install 7-Zip, download and save, but do not run the Intel graphics driver on your notebook's support page. This package provides the driver that enables the Intel High-Definition (HD) Graphics in supported notebook models that are running a supported operating system. If high-definition multimedia interface (HDMI) video output is supported, this package also installs the HDMI Audio Driver. http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp72001-72500/sp72370.exe Right click on the sp72370 driver file you saved. Select 7-Zip from the list of items on the menu. Have 7-Zip Extract to: and let it extract the file into its folder name (sp72370). Once 7-Zip has created the driver folder, go to the device manager and click on the problem HD audio device. Click on the driver tab. Click on Update Driver. Select the Browse my computer for driver software option, and browse to the driver folder 7-zip created. Make sure the Include Subfolders box is checked, and the driver should install. Then restart the PC. The only suggestion I can... I am having an issue with my main pc, computer 1 in my signature, not turning on or shutting itself down. It all started last week, I left the pc on and went to work, then a couple days later went to get on the pc and it was off. I have to try several times at turning it on before I finally get a post beep, I have unplugged the dvd drive, took out the video card, (that was my problem last time) and I even took out the ram and reseated it but I still can't get it to post beep the way it should. When I finally do get it to turn on it loads everything just fine then shuts itself down unexpectedly. I have a new power supply bought earlier this year and I am also on my 3rd video card since building this system. I was thinking maybe that the stuff between the processor and cooler could be old and not working, there by forcing the shutdown, any thoughts would be appreciated.

Hi all
So far I,ve enjoyed using W7 X-64 but there's one application that consistently (and randomly) fails for what I can see is no apparent reason.

The message IE8 has unexpectedly stopped working.
You then restart IE8 and it will sometimes but not always restore your last session.

I use almost NO plugins apart from the adobe flash - this installs on the 32 bit version of IE8 but not the 64 bit version.

(You can tell if flash is working / installed or not) by simply loading the BBC's home page (BBC - Homepage) and seeing if there is a little square analog clock application running at the right hand top of the screen - this won't appear if you start the 64 bit version of IE8).

I "tolerated" the occasional failure of the pre-RTM versions of W7 but I would have expected it to be fixed in the RTM.

Handling badly written / dubious code from zillions of websites can be tough on a browser but IMO the browser should be robust enough to just ignore or issue a message when it has problems accessing a particular site.

So W7 X-64 RTM in general very positive but not too happy with some aspects of IE8.

(Firefox hasn't yet crashed on my system - but for work compatability I'm often forced to use IE8 ----- so don't reply "why not use another browser please ).

Cheers
jimbo

A:IE8 - my main problem with W7 X-64 RTM

Here's something you can do:
1: Open Internet Options and go to and uncheck Enable Protected Mode.
2: Under Advanced tab, uncheck Enable 3rd party browser extension.

Clear all cookies and temp and then restart your pc.

my main board wont load when powered. when i apply power, the keyboard lights, and the CPU/sink fan starts, but the monitor does not reflect any activity. i pused the num lock key, to see if that would work, but it didn't respond.

the board is a "PC100 Systemboard, Slot 1/socket 370". the processoer is a pentium celeron.

so far, i have:

changed memory, changed CPU, checked and confirmed jumper settings, replaced the bios battery, replaced the BIOS chip itself, swaped power supplies, striped periphials, and even changed the system speaker to see if there was an "error beep" i was missing.

the results:
nothing.

the VGA "card" is onboard, with a ribbon cable "dongle"

i think that somthing is bad in the electronics of the board itself.

the system was functional before, then i put it aside, while i worked with another machine. now it just "doesn't work".

if anyone has sugguestions (can't spell that word), or knows how to check the board itself, let me know.

my email is:

Check and make sure the connections on your mouse and keyboard are secure.

If you are using USB connections for them, try PS2 instead, in fact, if you can borrow a mouse and keyboard from another computer try them, again, preferably not USB connected.

If they are wireless, change the batteries (yes, they do indeed have batteries).

Any suggestions?

A:Dell Inspiron 15 5559 Audio - Right Speaker has low volume while the left speaker functions normally

Hello. You didn't mention the headphone jack, so if you have not yet done so, plug in headphones and see if the balance is okay in them. If the headphones check out okay, then most probably it's a problem related to the speakers.
The test for speakers is the ePSA audio test. It is a hardware test, which means that if the test tones are very low in the right speaker, but normal in the left speaker, then there is hardware failure somewhere, related to the right speaker.
If both speakers sound normal during the test, then the problem is in the software. Do the usual things like re-install the audio driver, check the balance levels in the Sound properties, try different audio sources, etc.
Re-installing the audio driver resets the settings to their default configurations, so if you do it then you don't have to bother with things like volumes and balance settings, because they will be okay.(Also if the balance is okay through headphones, then it should be okay through the speakers too.)
Here is how to do a simple driver re-install:
1. Open the Device Manager.2. Expand the "Sound, video & game controllers" category.3. Right click on "Realtek High Definition Audio".4. Click "uninstall".5. Do not check the box to “delete the driver software for this device”. 6. Restart the computer. Windows will detect your device a... Read more

I've also run memtest86. First time I got one errr after pass 1 finished and started with pass 2. The test had run for like 2hrs. Then I pulled out one of the RAM(the one closest to the HDD cage), ran the test again for 2,5 passes(2-3hrs), no errors. Ran the RAM I pulled out, same length, no errors. Put the other three back in and ran the test over night for 8hrs, no errors.(??) I think it was around 5-7 passes. Under computer properties it was Installed RAM: 16GB (15,9GB usable)

But I still had problems. Reinstalled Windows 7 Enterprise, installed all the Windows updates and the drivers from Gigabytes webpage, this time without the EasyTune etc.
I also have simple programs like: uTorrent, Minecraft Server, Mumble Server, Wampserver, Plex Media Server and Filezilla Server on it. So no random programs etc.
Still got problems. I've tried to reset BIOS, didn't help. I have changed from IDE to AHCI in the BIOS(cause I have SSD). When I come home today I will try to pull out two RAM and see what happens, if that doesn't help, I will try to run with the two I pull out. I will also try to disconnect the HDDs and only have the SSD plugged in.
I will try to update BIOS too. If none works I will reinstall Windows again and dont install ANYTHING and see what happens. Any ideas? I... Read more

Sorry if this gets long, I want to make sure I explain the problem sufficiently. I am trying to hook up my LG LCD HDTV to my husband's Toshiba Satellite via HDMI. I right-clicked on the desktop and went into "Graphics Propreties...". At first, I did a desktop clone, which worked out great, but I wasn't satisfied with the resolution. I figured it had something to do with the max resolution available on the notebook, since what displayed on the TV was just a clone of the notebook's display. I then switched to single display, with the HDTV as the display. That worked, andI was able to up the resolution past what was available before. Here is where the problem starts: I was switching back and forth with a few different resolutions, and happened to pick one that apparantly my HDTV does not like, as the screen went black and "Invalid Format" danced around the screen. As soon as I unplugged the TV from the notebook, it switched back to the notebook's display. Here is my question: I need to know how to either fix the resolution issue with the TV without it being plugged into the notebook, or I need to know how to reset the graphics settings so that it does not remember that I ever hooked it up to the TV in the first place, at which point I can start from scratch and not mess around with the resolution to begin with.

choose to use the internal display only, the external device only, or
both simultaneously.
Some modes are only available with the appropriate device attached
and turned on.
The quickest way to change the display output settings is to use the
display hot key (Fn + F5):
1 Press Fn and F5 simultaneously.
2 While holding down Fn, press F5 repeatedly until the setting
you want takes effect. Briefly pause each time you press the F5
key to allow time for the display to change.
This hot key cycles through the settings in the following order:
❖ Built-in display only
❖ Built-in display and external monitor simultaneously
❖ External monitor only
❖ TV (or other external video device) only
❖ Built-in display and TV (or other external video device)
simultaneously
❖ Built-in display and external monitor (extended desktop)
❖ Built-in display and TV (extended desktop)
❖ Swap—Switch primary display between internal display
and external monitor when using extended desktop

That should let you get back to using the control panel to select a suitable mode for the exteranl screen.

EDIT Moved from Am I Infected to XP. As requested in post 22 ~~boopmeMy computer runs XP - Home.Last night I was prompted to update Media Player to version 8. I was afraid to do so, because many "updates" from MS mess up my computer. However, I loaded the update. I noticed the new icons in the tray and on the Start Menu, so I assumed all was well.On Friday nights I run my anti virus and anti spyware software. I started AVG anti-spyware. I checked on it 2 hours later and my boot up screen was on the monitor. By bootup screen I mean, when my machine is turned on, it stops soon after the bootup begins and says something about the Processor was changed??? and prompts me to hit F1 to continue or Del to go to the BIOS setup. I always hit F1 and the machine always bootsup just fine.Something happened while AVG was running to shut down the computer, what I don't know and I don't know if it is connected to the Media Player update or to a virus I picked up the night before (4 of us use this computer, so viruses and adware are not uncommon - I automatically run Norton Anti-virus and manually run AVG, Ad-Aware, SuperSpyware and Lavasoft). I have had a 5.1 speaker arrangement on my Vista x64 PC for some time. Today, the front left speaker decided to stop working correctly. When trying to plug my headphones in to a rear jack on my motherboard (onboard sound), I noticed that sound was only coming through the right earphone. I decided to give up with trying to listen through my headphones for the time being and plugged my speakers back in, only to find that now my front left speaker wasn't working correctly. I tried to adjust the balance on my speakers, as I thought I could hear a whisper of a sound through the front left.
The front left speaker is producing sound, but at a greatly reduced volume to the rest of the speakers, I have to set the balance to the following to make FL and FR speakers 'the same' volume (by ear).
FL volume: 100
FR volume: 0
I have my speakers plugged in to 3 jacks on my motherboard (out of 6).
The green jack for FL and FR.The black jack for RL and RR.The orange jack for C and SubW.I have been unsucessful installing Realtek (which is a shame, because on my last motherboard I was able to solve the problem with that somehow, but I can't remember how) as it states the drivers are not supported. Which I'm assuming means my motherboard doesn't support it.
My motherboard is an MSI Intel p35 Neo.
I have had this setup working fine for around a month. My speakers are labtec (but I don't see how that would matter).I am currently using the normal drivers that come with Vista.Any ideas?

I hope I've chosen the correct category for this issue. I have a Dell Inspiron 660S desktop computer currently running Windows 7. I need to be able to move around my home from room to room with a single speaker (not a pair of speakers) that provides good volume to overcome other machine noises (not extremely loud noises, but not a quiet environment either). I have tried blue-tooth (two different doggles) and several blue-tooth remote speakers (single-speaker) but the volume is not good and the reception is generally bad. The distance is not more than 20 feet or so but it is through walls (and sometimes up one flight of stairs) and my blue-tooth reception has been sporadic at best. (I haven't tried any speaker "sets" because I often move from room to room and multiple speakers are too cumbersome.)

I gave up on blue-tooth and decided to try a wired USB-powered speaker. I bought a 25 foot USB extension cord and two different USB-powered speakers which worked fine as far as the reception went (of course) but the volume was insufficient on both. I verified that the volume was up 100% on computer as well as on the speakers themselves.

I have small BOSE computer speakers (positioned at left and right sides of monitor) connected to my desktop computer for normal computer activity like movies and playing music and they sound great and I never have to turn the volume up more than about half way. I am running Windows 10 Professional with current up-to-date updates on my Dell Inspiron Laptop.

Several days ago I noticed that plugging in current headset no longer muted the internal speaker. I know that it is not the headset as it works perfectly on another computer.

Pointers in the direction of a solution will be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

A:External Speaker Fails to Mute Internal Speaker

What audio codec does your laptop use?

It will be listed in device manager. The VEN DEV combo will be enough information.

You'll find it in the device properties details tab, specifically, the "Hardware IDs" section.

It will resemble this:

Code:
HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_10EC&DEV_0288&SUBSYS_10EC0191&REV_1000
Usually the audio codec chip itself will detect an external speaker is plugged in. Have you checked your audio device's configuration software? It should have a shortcut in the classic control panel.

Hi, Some things to check for? You will first want to ensure that this ?echo? effect is not being caused by a third party application. The easiest method would be to test the default Windows sounds, then try configuring the speakers, and if the issue persist to try Safe Mode - to eliminate third party software or services as the cause. Use the default Windows Sounds 1. Click Start, click Control Panel, click Hardware and Sound, and then click Sound.2. In the Sound window click on the Sounds (tab).3. You will see a box with a list of items one being Asterisk.4. Click on Asterisk, or any item in that box, and then click Test.5. You should hear audio coming from your system.6. If the clip was not long enough select another item, and then click Test.7. Determine whether or not the distorted audio is present. Configure the speakers 1. Click Start, click Control Panel, click Hardware and Sound, and then click Sound.2. In the Sound window right-click your Speakers and select Configure Speakers.3. Follow the on-screen setup, and Test the available configurations.4. Indentify whether or not one configuration appears to have less of an ?echo? than others.5. If the ... Hello,

I purchased Creative Gigaworks T40 series II PC speakers in April. Just yesterday, the sound is cutting out when I play music CD's on the computer. I have a home-built PC that has been performing very well. I have an ASUS M4A78LT-M LE motherboard with on board sound card. Operating system is Windows 7 home premium. Below is the list of troubleshooting I have tried:

1. Rebooted PC
2. Checked computer and speaker connections
3. Made sure all hardware has latest drivers
4. Ran anti-virus scan. No virus detected.
5. Windows diagnostics didn't detect any hardware problems
6. Adjusted and experimented with settings in Windows Media Player

I also hooked up the speakers to a stand-alone DVD player (non PC). I watched 4 hours of DVD movies and the speakers performed flawlessly.
Then I played a flight simulator game on the PC for a couple hours. Again the speakers performed flawlessly.

Through process of elimination, this leads me to believe the problem is Windows Media Player software. This is what runs music CD's off the PC.
Either that, or my CD/DVD combo drive.

Past experience has shown me that sooner or later any version of Windows Media Player will cause problems.

Am I on the right track? Or am I overlooking another cause?

A:PC speaker problem, I think I narrowed down problem area

I never use WMP myself, but if you suspect that's the problem you could download a free media player like VLC and see if that improves the situation.

From then my normal speaker (audio jack) at the back doesn't work. But my USB speaker works.

I tried to reinstall the audio driver from my motherboard CD and nothing happens.

Please help. This is very annoying.

A:Analog Speaker not detected. USB speaker works

If you deleted RealTek, that is a PC sound (Integrated on the motherboard) and most likely why your speakers are not working. You must have a PC sound device, other than a USB connected device, for the speakers to work.

First step is to reinstall the RealTek drivers. Its best to get the driver either from your PC vendor or Motherboard vendor, as applicable and install that as the first step. Then make sure your "speakers" (sound card) is set as the default playback device in the Control Panel/Hardware and Sound/Sound panel.

Speaker Problems

Hello. I am fairly new to the computer world. I recently bought a computer from Dell. The model is 4400. I really didn't like the speakers that they gave me so since I like to play a lot of games

I decided to buy surround sound speakers for my computer. The product and model name of the speakers is: Creative Inspire 4.1 4400. I went home and set up my speakers.

When I had them all arranged where I wanted them I tested them out and I found that my two rear speakers weren't working. I then checked all of the connections and I found out that I only have one line out port that I can connect into. So I was wondering if anyone knew of a way to turn my line in port into another line out port (without having to take apart my computer a whole bunch). Or if that can not be done could someone tell me of something I could buy that I could use to make my speakers work. Thanks.

A:4.1 Speaker Problem

There are two solutions for this problem:

The cheap fix: Buy a Y adapter(one male plug and two female plugs) and plug your two speaker lines into the one jack.(this is really a waste of the 4.1 surround sound speakers though)

The correct way: Buy a new sound card with setreo out, such as a Sound Blaster Live! or Audigy.

I have had these two speakers for about four-five years, they have lasted me threw threw some heavy albums and long nights of gaming. Today when I threw in a CD, they sounded muffled and such. I fiddled around with the volume controls on my computer and still the same. I have no other pair to test out to see if they are really dieing, so should I just go out to get a new set of speakers (I have had my eye on these Logitech ones for a while)? Thanks for any advice

Hmmm....I've never had a set of speakers just start dying like that. I have, however, had speakers "blow" without my knowledge, and sound crappy (distorted, somewhat muffled, etc.) and after playing with the sound controls, I ended up replacing the speakers. The only thing I'd check before replacing the speakers is that you don't have an effect turned on. Without me actually hearing your speakers make the muffled sound, I'd say that you *might* have enabled the "underwater" effect that makes everything sound muffled. I say *might* only because my son has done this to me, and it took me 20 minutes to figure out that he had sabotaged my audio .

I'm not sure if this will work, but try plugging in a headset your sound output. I can't remember the exact size of the speaker jacks, and if they're the same size as the headset jack. If it does work, and your headset sounds fine, then your speakers are messed up. If your headset sounds messed up, then the speakers arent' your problem, it's your sound card (or onboard audio) that's messed up, wich may or may not be fixed by uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers. You could always go get a cheap set of speakers from a dollar store or walmart (you should be able to find a really cheap pair for under $10) and try them on your computer (or borrow a pair from a friend).

Hope all this helps!

My aunt has a bit of a speaker problem. When she downloads songs and listens to them, the sound only comes out of the right speaker (that happens in kazaa). When she puts a CD in, and listens to it in Windows Media Player, it still plays through the right speaker. But, when like windows xp starts up, the opening sound is played through both speakers. I double-clicked the volume logo in the bottom right corner and the balance is perfectly fine (bar is in the middle). Please help me so that she can listen to music and CDs through both speakers.

Thank You,

JTJ

Ok, well I had my computer formatted a while back, it's a Dell Dimension 5150 running on Windows XP, since the format, the speakers have not worked, they are plugged in the correct place. The speakers are Dell, model A215 (manufactured by Samsung), when I open up the control panel on Sounds and Audio devices, under the Hardware tab it says everything is working properly, except for "Sound Blaster 16 or AWE32 or compatible (WDM)" Device type: Sound, video and game controllers, Manufacturer Creative Technology Ltd. it says "This device cannot start (Code 10)" I was wondering if that might be the problem? Can anyone tell me how to fix this and get my speakers working?

Thanks
Jay

Ok,

I have an EVGA x58 LE motherboard. When I plug my speakers into the back they only play sound out of the right speaker, tried headphones, does the same thing (plays sound out of the right speaker).

I have audio ports at the front of the case, they work fine, beautiful sound.

My speakers work fine, so do my headphones.

Realtek audio drivers, most updated according to Realtek's website. No matter what I do, only the right speaker plays, the balance is not off or anything, most updated chipset drivers, most updated graphics card drivers.

Does anyone know how to fix this?

Hello,

I have a set of pc speakers that work on a usb connection.

Trying to get a new set, non usb, working.
I guess the plug for these goes to the green jack on the back of my Dell pc.
Right ?

Nothing coming out.

How do I tell W7, or the pc, to use this jack, now, rather than usb ?

Thanks,
Bob

Open the Windows playback properties and make sure that the onboard sound is set as the default playback device. If it isn't showing, double check in the bios that it is enabled. You may also need to install the driver for it.

I bought a pair of Altec Lansing speakers about half a year ago and have enjoyed using them. However recently whenever the speakers are turned on they give me this horrible static for a moment or two. I know it is not the speakers themselves because i have put my headphones in a jack on the speakers and the headphones do the same thing. I was wondering if there is a way to fix this problem and what is causing it? Maybe the cords?

I would recommend opening the case, and lightly jiggling the cables going to your sound card, while the system is running, to see if you can locate a bad connection. Of course, you should also check the cable connections going to the speakers.
