No sound from computer, speakers work fine... Avance AC'97 sound

Q: No sound from computer, speakers work fine... Avance AC'97 sound

my computer has no sound. I cannot figure out why. I reinstalled my Avance AC'97 sound driver and no luck. the speakers work fine. does anyone know what i can do? I didn't change anything before the sound went out. It just isn't there.

Preferred Solution: No sound from computer, speakers work fine... Avance AC'97 sound

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

physically check your cables, as usually this problem is caused by human error. next, check all of your volumes. what OS, service pack, and version are you running?

I have a problem with audio on system speakers Inspiron 13 5368 2-in-1. I have exhausted all my ideas.
The audio is fine through plugged in headset but through system speakers it starts loud and fades away to very faint audio coming from two speakers.Could this be some type of Auto volume control? This problem exists with ITunes with local media, DIRECTV, Slacker, YouTube.
This has existed through several W10 upgrades. I am on the latest W10. No updates available. I have used Dell Auto Update and verified through the website no other drivers are missing or outdated
With the deal Audio I restored to default, disabled equalizer, audio and microphone enhancement. No luck
I have removed audio devices from device manager rebooted to same results. Any other ideas?

A:Fading sound on system speakers but sound is fine on headphones

djjmj wrote: " I have used Dell Auto Update "

Dell Auto Update you're referring to is Dell Support Assist? If no, I suggest you diagnose Audio with Dell Support Assist. Most Dell systems have Support Assist pre-installed. You can check by typing Support Assist onto [Cortana] search box or right click windows logo and then click on 'Programs & Features'. If Support Assist isn't installed on system then I suggest you click on the link below and stroll down to 'Download Now'.

Ever since I got my second Video Card and went SLI I have had crippling sound problems. After playing for a while all sounds get replace with a high pitched squeal. This is only with games, not music (using WMP), DVDs (using WinDVD), and only with my sound card, not the (crappy) onboard sound (which has no problem). Some games may play for three minutes, others for close to fifty before this consistently happens. It seems to be simply subsistuting all sounds with this annoying noise. I quit the game it goes quiet, but music is now affected and DVDs have NO sound. Single GPU works fine (either card, either PCI-E slot), sound card in either PCI slot still causes the problem. I recently got a newer, better sound card but it does the exact same thing. I think it may be either a video card issue, or the motherboard. Is it something to due with the way the video card handles sound? Or the motherboard? HELP!! I really like the improved graphics (on a relative budget) that SLI brings, and don't like being hobbled like this.

Tried Turning down Sound Card Acceleration with the old card, didn't help.

I'm using Windows 7. The computer speakers work, but when I insert known good headphones into the audio jack, the computer speakers mute (as they should), but no sound comes through the headphones. I checked all the sound indicators (e.g. control panel/sound, the sound icon on the tray and device manager) and everything indicates the volume is up and the device is working. I've encountered this problem perhaps a half a dozen times and a reboot always fixes the problem. My only guess is that some application or virus is running in the background which is interfering with the ability of the headphone jack to transmit sound. Does anyone know how I can fix this problem without rebooting the computer? And does anyone know what the culprit might be which is interfering with the sound being transmitted into the headphones? Thanks!

Hello, this is my first post
I was trying to watch a video on youtube one night, and the sound was not loud enough, so I changed my audio device from my pc speakers to my tv, I use for a monitor. Now I cannot enable sound on my pc speakers, in fact they are nowhere to be found in my audio devices....all I can think is, what the....? In my task bar the soundmax icon has a red circle with a slash through it, and says (no soundmax audio device...you cannot use soundmax audio settings). I try to open soundmax, and it will not open. I don't know what to think about this, all I did was change audio devices, which I have done several times with no issue. I know my pc is old, but this is probably gonna be my last straw! I am so sick and tired of all the windows glitches, and errors, I am about to jump into a Mac faster then you can say "windows sucks"
So, can anyone help with this latest of many errors I am experiencing?

A:Enabled sound threw tv, now computer speakers wont work

How did you change audio devices? In most cases when HDMI is used Windows automatically switches the sound to from "Speakers" (PC audio) to HDMI.

Mac's are OK, but I see a lot of posts of problems related to Mac's on recording forums. Also 3 times the price for equivalent hardware (and many times less). I had a PC I built with a Q6600 and an Intel DP35DP motherboard. Can't say I didn't have problems. I now have a system I built with an i7 3770 and an ASRock motherboard, originally on Win 7 and it is now on Win10 and hardware is still 100% compatible.

I get sound over the headphones no problem when listening to computer files using Windows Media

But if I want to share what i am listening to, say a radio broadcast, over the internal speakers, the file plays but no sound comes out.

The speakers have not been muted, and are set at a mid volume level

it has been this way three weeks now. About three weeks before this happened, I could not get my RealPlayer music files to play.

I wonder if there is something about my computer choosing a default (or maybe I chose one) What would be ideal for me is if this computer would let me alternate between programs - but it seems to prefer that I use one system or another (My old Windows '95 always let me alternate - I could use Windows Media for a half hour, the RealPlaye, then PlayJ.)

Any help appreciated

I have no applications running at all in Windows. I have the system sound muted, but I still have some sound coming out of the speakers. It sounds like some talk radio. I also have all networking disabled. I have no idea where this is coming from.

How can I tell if any process on my computer is accessing the sound drivers?

A:Solved: computer sound muted but sound is still coming from speakers

In some cases, if the speakers are cheaply made and not sheilded, they can acutally pickup radio waves (especially if you live near a radio tower). Does the "Talk radio" continue if the speakers are on, while the computer is off?

Hey guys,

I'm looking for a bit of guidance if possible.

My Dilemma:

I have 2 sets of speakers plugged in to my computer - one set in the speaker jack, the other in the line in (switched to rear output).
Until recently, everything worked fine, however now I am only getting sound from the right speakers from both jacks. There is no fault in any of the speakers. I've tried with only one set plugged in, and with them switched round - same result. Also the same result when I use headphones plugged in to the headphone jack at the front of my pc.

Device manager has indicated no fault in any drivers.

So basically it started a few days ago (29th of August 2016) and my headphones (razer kraken 7.1) stopped working and the video that i was watching on youtube stopped working too. i assumed it was just a glitch or smthin so i just restarted and it started to work again, about 30 mins later it happens again so i decide to investigate; i can't play any youtube, but i still loads, i can't open windows media player, i can't play songs on spotify, i can still go through the internet just fine, i can even play overwatch.
So i tried switching to my speakers, and everything works just fine, and as soon as i switched to my headphones it stopped working. i have restarted my rig several times over that past few days, and the headphones stop working between 20mins - 3 hours
i have updated my realtek and razer synapse drivers, so i am stumped as to what i should do
what i think it might be
driver problem
help will be appreciated
BTW i added DXDiag

A:Sound/video Stop wrking with headphones, fine with speakers (realtek)

The headset, according to the Dxdiag suggests they are USB. USB headsets do not use the PC's sound card (e.g. Realtek) but instead take digital data and convert it to audio inside the headset.

Have you tried a different USB port? e.g. if you are using a front USB port, try a rear port.
You could also "refresh" the USB headset. Plug it in then go to the Device Manager and uninstall the headset. Disconnect it from the PC and then restart the PC. After Windows has started plug in the headset and Windows should detect and reinstall it.

I've connected up an amp using auxiliary to my PC using RCA to the OUT (green) port in the back of my soundcard (SB Audigy LS).
I also have a pair of Corsair Vengeance wireless headphones connected via USB.
And lastly I have a Logitech webcam with built in microphone connected via USB.
I'm running Win7 Ultimate x64.

I get sound through the headphones fine and the built-in mic also works fine. I don't use the mic on the webcam but in the Sound\Playback Devices dialogue box, under the Recording tab I cab see it responding when I talk.

But, no matter what I do I cannot get any sound from the soundcard out to my amp. I've disabled the onboard Realtek drivers. I've changed the default speakers to the Audigy wherever I can find a setting. I looked in the BIOS (found nothing). I unplugged both the headphones and webcam, rebooted, still nothing.

I've previously had this machine plugged into an amp without a problem. I did rebuild the whole machine relatively recently and reinstalled everything. It has not been plugged into an amp for quite some time (the old amp died) but it's always just worked before. The amp I'm running is only days new and my CD player and turntable both play fine. I can hear feedback through my speakers as I plug the cable into the soundcard, but once it's in, nothing.

Please does anyone have any suggestions as to what I can try?

A:No sound via SB Audigy LS through amp. Headphones work fine.

First, when you use a USB device, the sound card doesn't really come into play.

Do you have a regular headset (not USB) that you can try on the GREEN speaker jack on the SoundBlaster? That would confirm whether there is a problem related to the sound card or if the problem is in the cable or amp.

Check the Device Manager, Sounds section. Is the SoundBlaster listed and does it show working OK or an error?

You could also try the Realtek. I have a recording studio so I'm attuned to audio quality and I find the Realtek is just as good on sound playback as the SoundBlaster's. Although I have high end equipment for recording, I use Realtek for all PC audio.

I'm on a HP pavilion that came prepackaged with vista, but reloaded with windows XP, if that helps at all.

Now I've been trying to google this problem. And everyone says go to my sound settings in control panel and change my audio playback to HDMI.

The problem is that option never shows up. It's just my laptop speakers and that is it. Everyone else can seem to fix this problem by doing that. But not me :/

A:Sound doesn't work on TV using HDMI out. Picture is fine.

What is the video port on the computer end? is it DVI or HDMI? If the laptop port (not the TV) is a DVI connector and you are using an adapter to adapt it to HDMI, DVI does not carry sound. You can connect the audio using a cable from the Head Phone jack to RCA. to plug into your TV or stereo.

Hi guys, just reinstalled windows 7. everything works great, then I went to paly a file and to my surprise, no sound. Tested speakers on another device, they work. Sound card drivers are working and up to date.

When I play a media file, I can see the sound gage go. So I went in sounds, playback device, and all I see in there is my sound card, no speakers or headphones icon. Thus no sounds from speakers. Tried other headphones/speakers they also dont work on the PC.

First two screenshots are my Device Manager, third one shows my playback devices.. My wife needs this for her business and I am losing sleep over this for days now I tried everything. Any ideas?

What sound card do you have?

Double-click on the HD audio device in Device Manager - what is driver and date?

Usually there is an audio codec/ drivers, e.g., IDT, Realtek, etc... that must be installed.

Hi guys,
I have a new Zoostorm pc hooked up to my Philips LCD tv. I've followed the tv instructions to connect the pc and sound, but it's not working. I was told by the Zoostorm support person that they don't test their machines on tv's, so can't advise me. He did say that my graphics card doesn't support sound, so the HDMI cable isn't the problem.
I've been through DOZENS of sites & posts, following all the advice - enabeling the HD sound option, updating drivers, rebooting - I can't even remember most of it, there's been so much I bought a 3.5mm cable but this hasn't worked. I tried the red and white plugs aswell (sorry, can't remember what they're called) but they didn't work either. I even went so far as to buy a seperate sound card, but this is having the same problem - the external speakers work fine, so I know it's not the pc thats the problem, but I can't get sound from the tv.
One post (somewhere) suggested that the BIOS isn't configured correctly. I'm starting to think this is correct, as both onboard and seperate sound won't work. But the external speakers work, so is it the tv? I don't think it is though, because I had the same problem with my kids pc last year (another Zoostorm, different brand LCD).

Hi any advice here would be helpful.

I have a Inspiron 15 5555 laptop which was purchased in March this year. Everything was running okay on it apart from the Graphics card which kept crashing but thats a whole different story. my issue is with the sound. a few days ago i turned my laptop on and it told me i had a device plugged in and was highlighting the headphones. Now i can't get sound from the speakers.i've plugged in and unplugged the headphones and nothing will happen. I ran a diagnostic F12 test and i could heard the bleeps from the speakers. I've uninstalled drivers and reinstalled them. Updated all windows 10 updates and windows diagnosis but still nothing so now i'm at my wits end.Any advice would be much appreciated.

A:No sound from speakers but headphones work!

naomio_5it told me i had a device plugged in and was highlighting the headphones.
It seems that the computer is falsely sensing that there is a plug in the headphone jack, which could mean that the sensor has failed. See the Headphone Jack FAQ.
Another test you could try is to switch between the Realtek audio driver and the Windows native driver. If the speakers don't work with either driver, that's a good sign of a hardware defect.
1. Open the Device Manager (find it in the Control Panel, or type devmgmt.msc into the search box).2. Expand the "Sound, video & game controllers" and right click on "Realtek High Definition Audio".3. Select to "Update Driver Software".4. Click on "Browse my computer for driver software".5. Click "Let me pick from a list of drivers on my computer".6. Put a check in the box "Show compatible hardware" if not already checked [but SEE NOTE].7. In the list of devices, click "High Definition Audio" (the native driver).8. Click "Next".9. On the Update Driver Warning box, click "Yes" (install the driver). 10. Restart the laptop if prompted. If not prompted, sometimes you have to restart, sometimes not.[To get back to the Realtek driver, do it again but reverse the names in steps 2 and 7.]
NOTE: if you have a 2-in-1 model and do not see a "High Definition Audio" option after step 6, then uncheck "Show compatible hardware". Then in... Read more

My wife informed me that there has never been sound from her notebook speaker but headphones work fine.  Is this possibly problem with the audio driver or maybe a headphone jack problem?  Any suggestions would be appreciated.Latitude D620Default device: SigmaTel AudioSigma Tel version

A:No sound from Latitude D620 notebook speaker but headphones work fine.

It could be either. On the software side of things, you could reinstall the audio driver or use PC Restore to return her computer to the exact configuration it was in when she received it. Everything that was working then would work again except any hardware problems that have developed since it was shipped (or any it had when shipped for that matter).Or it could be the headphone jack. The Dell laptops with a Sigmatel 92xx audio chip utilize Universal Jacks technology, which is somewhat complicated. In addition to the usual mechanical parts, the jack also uses current & impedance-sensing techniques to trigger software configuration and switching (to send the audio signal to the speakers). So there are three areas of potential failure: mechanical, electronic, and software. Sometimes, a little very gentle wiggle of a plug in the jack will get it to resume normal functioning, at least temporarily. Normally I'd say to run the audio test part of Dell Diagnostics to confirm that there is a hardware problem, but we have seen that these Universal Jacks can cause a false result in Diagnostics. That is because Diagnostics operates in DOS, outside of Windows, so a Windows software misconfiguration is irrelevant to the test even though in this case it is caused by hardware. So the audio test can pass in Diagnostics, correctly signaling that software configuration is the immediate cause of the problem, but missing that a hardware problem, the bad jack, is the root cause. Once I plug my headphones in or my hearing aids bluetooth device in, it all goes south. The internal speakers continue to work as does the bluetooth, but nothing is coming out of the headphones. Since I was once in IT, this problem is unique to the jack itself. Either the jack lifted up or was pushed back and never properly tested. The hook, I just received this computer 3 weeks ago to replace a faulty HDMI out port. I was told that there would be an open ticket so if I had any problems with this computer it would be attended to. Unfortunately, that is not the case.

I've scanned for viruses

I've scanned for spyware w/three different pieces of software (spybot, malware-bytes, adaware08).. all are current

Any suggestions are welcome!!! This is a client's computer and I've already had it several days.... I need it to move!

I have a strange problem after re-installing Window 7 Home Premium onto a new Transcend SSD, having altered the BIOS drive mode to ACHI. All my data was backed up and re-installed with little trouble. But now I can't play music on WMP or anything else, and there are no system sounds at all.

I thought at first it was a matter of settings, and have altered everything I can think of, to no avail. I have uninstalled and re-installed all the sound devices, updated all the drivers I can see, and nothing works. However the restored files themselves are not corrupted, as I can hear them (and the system sounds) by plugging in earphones. The (Creative) speakers test properly in Control Panel. Also, Windows Media Centre does play and record TV, with normal sound. One USB device is shown as not starting, but I think it's the volume control for the speakers and it has always worked even when shown thus.

The MOBO is an AsusTek M2N68-VM, and Device Manager also shows under Sound, video and game controllers a TV card (USB), High Def Audio Device (Windows basic?), Nvidia HDMI Audio Device, and VIA High Def Audio, which I think is the one that matters.

Can anyone help me before I throw the SSD away and re-install everything as it was before!

A:Speakers and WMC work, but can't play any other sound files

Hello and welcome excessive now do the speakers work on another machine or sound device?

Are they connected by USB or the jack I can't quite make out how from your description and also the Creative speakers did they come with any form of software if so what is the model number of them.

Now I am assuming you have updated the driver for audio but from what source - I am not a fan of the Windows feature and always use the board or the actual manufactures site for drivers such as that.
The one you want is this one for that update http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/M2N68VM/HelpDesk_Download/

I am not sure of what the NVidia Sound Device you mention is though? as I can find no mention of it on the Asus site.

I think you should also look at what version of the BIOS you have installed too and I am assuming you know the risks of updating the BIOS so be careful.

HP620 laptop running windows 7 32bit Home Premium
Plugged in headphones for an hour. When I removed them the laptop speakers no longer function.
Checked volume and mute.
Checked playback device area and laptop speakers are enabled and indicated as functioning. Only headphones work.
Deleted Audio card from Device manager and rebooted.
Windows found latest driver and reinstalled.
Same problem, sound in headphones only.....not in laptop speakers.
I restored system to point 2 weeks ago and still no sound.
Could really use some help here

A:HP620 No sound from speakers only headphones work

Welcome to Seven Forums NJTeddy. Generally the way the headphone jack works is there is basically a switch inside the headphone jack that shitches off the speakers when the headphones are plugged in. This switch may be stuck. I would try playing some audio you can hear on the headphones, then slide the headphone jack in and out slowly, see if you get any audio through the speakers at all. it may just be plugging and unplugging a few times will fix it. So I had vista installed on my new PC but it was so buggy that I decided to put XP back on instead. However, now I can't seem to get the speakers working. I can get headphones to work when playing certain games, but I get no sounds from anything else and the speakers won't play any sound at all. When I try to play a song in Windows media player, I get the following error message:

Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There may not be a sound device installed on your computer, it may be in use by another program, or it may not be functioning properly.

I figure that I must need sound drivers or something. I'm running an Asus P5N-E SLI motherboard. I've tried downloading sound drivers from various places including Asus' site, but every time I try to install new sound drivers I get the following error message:

I'm sorry for the long read. I'm at my wits end and have no idea how to get my speakers and sound up and running like it should be. Any help to solve this issue would be greatly appreciated.

I'd like to buy a set of 5.1 surround speakers, but I don't know wether my sound card is able to make 5.1 speakers work, and I can't seem to find the answer by googling...
So, I used Everest to identify my sound car : it seems I've got two :

then I went to the Settings Panel, and Realtek won't let me choose Surroun instead of Stereo :
so I went to the sound settings and got this, which seems to indicate my Nvidia sound card isn't activated?! :

So, my question is : does my sound card have the ability to make 5.1 speakers work, and if yes, how should I proceed?

Thank you for your help

So Recently I got a new computer its an Acer. It only has one jack for headphones and microphones and usually when I plug one in it works fine and asks me to clarify which I'd like to use. I switch between headphones and microphone a lot so its a very useful tool for me. Though recently when I plug it in it no longer gives me the option to choose and no sound plays from the headphones and it instead plays from the speakers whether its plugged in or not. It also dims the sound a bit when they're plugged in so I think it decided I was mainly/only going to use microphone and set it to a mic one regardless of what's plugged in. I'm not very tech savvy but I tried my best to fix it. I tried other headsets, It is the same. I tried half plugging it in or fiddling with it, Its the same. I tried going into the sound playback list and seeing if it was disabled and it is not, It does not even show headphones as an option though it does show 'speaker's. I tried messing around in those settings and restoring them to default and nothing worked. I also tried going to the mic settings. For the mic settings there is two different options, 'microphone' which I assume is the one I usually plug in (since I can just plug my mic in and it works now) and stereo mix. I'v tried disabling the mic and enabling stereo mix and vise verse and tried restoring to default and tried making it forget about the mic and putting it back on and nothing is working and I really would like to use my headset since I l... A:No sound coming from headphones but speakers work

Try a reinstall and see if it fixes the problem. Go to the Device Manager, RIGHT click on the entry for your sound device (Could be Realtek, Conexant, etc) and then LEFT click "Uninstall". DO NOT uninstall the drivers. Restart the PC and when Windows starts it will detect and reinstall the sound. This fixes a lot of corruptions and may fix your problem.

In reference to the Stereo Mix, that should be set as the default Recording device. Then if you use the mic it will be heard, or if you want to record audio from the Internet you must have the Stereo Mix.

hello all,

I have been having this problem for a long time. Hope someone can provide me with some guidelines and suggestions.

I'm using a Sound Blaster Live! Value sound card and PC-Works FourPointSurround FPS1000 under WinXP Pro SP1. When I play mp3 or other media files (under winamp or WMP), the sound output will become distorted occasionally (a loud buzz sound that lasts for approximately 1 second) after the installation of the latest driver (Sound Blaster Live! - LiveDrvUni-Pack (English) dated 28 Feb 03)

The sound card and speaker system work fine with the initial driver that comes with WinXP. However, the 2 rear speakers cannot be recognized with that driver. In order to take advantage of the full surround system, I believe I must install the Creative package (driver, AudioHQ and etc.)

I have also tried to install the driver and program (AudioHQ, Mixer and etc.) from the original CD that comes with the card. However, when I try to access AudioHQ, it yields the error "Fail to initialize Mixer" and the program will shut down automatically. It had worked in Win98SE but it does not work for me under WinXP. The new versions installed through Sound Blaster Live! - LiveDrvUni-Pack (English) do not have these problems.

I have tried the following attempts but to no avail
- set volume to different level
- set Reverb and Chorus to different level under EAX Control Panel; turned off all effects
- change my latency level in CMOS
- change the sound card to anothe... Read more

Hi All, I have a HP ENVY Notebook - 17-k200na which runs Windows 10 with Beats Audio As of last night the laptop is refusing to play any sound via the built in speakers.Headphones work fine (both Bluetooth and wired) and it seems that the PC isn't recognising that the headphones have been removed. I'm not sure if its caused by a hardware or software issue. I have updated, uninstalled and reinstalled the sound drivers to no avail.  When searching this issue online most people advise a work around, in which in the playback devices settings you disable headphones and set speakers as default device. However, even with the most up to date drivers my speakers and headphones are displayed as 1 single device.  Further to this I have seen you can disable Jack detection in Realtek HD Audio Manager. Unfortunately, whenever i try and run HD Audio Manager the window immediately closes and Beats opens in its place. Beats Audio (at least my version) has next to no settings and this option is not available to me.  Any advice would be great. A link to a new version of Beats software could be advantageous if one exists. Any other work arounds also welcome.

Each time I try to play a song or video in wmp, itunes, VLC media player, InterVideo, etc. I get absolutely no sound. Videos play, I can see the images perfectly fine, but there's silence.
However, if I want to watch a video on youtube or anywhere else online, the sound works. There's got to be a simple solution to this but I can't seem to find it. Any help? I've been putting up with this for a long time and I'd really like to finally get it sorted out.
Oh and before you ask, the media players are not muted.

A:Sound won't work form Speakers but works in headphones

Hi Ezom and welcome to SF!
That is most likely no driver problem. The way you described it makes me think it's a hardware issue.
Inside the headphone jack is a "micro switch that cuts the connection to the build in speakers as soon as anything is plugged in there. Sometimes those switches get stuck (especially if one uses headphone jacks that are slightly thicker than 3.5mm.
You could try plug/unplug the headphones (or a similar plug) several times to "unstuck" the switch
