Backup fails with a 'device error' code 0x8078012D/disk read error

Q: Backup fails with a 'device error' code 0x8078012D/disk read error

During Windows backup, which wants to backup the 'C' drive and my games drive 'E' (for some reason), I get the following error message after the 'C' backup has completed but not the 'E':

'The backup operation that started at '‎2015‎-‎12‎-‎20T06:00:25.459859400Z' has failed with following error code '0x8078012D' (The operation failed due to a device error encountered with either the source or the destination. If the source or destination volume is on a disk, run CHKDSK /R on the source or destination volume, and then retry the operation.). Please review the event details for a solution, and then rerun the backup operation once the issue is resolved.'

I ran CHKDSK \R and received several errors of the type: 'A disk read error occurred 0000185. The disk does not have enough space to replace bad clusters detected in file xxxxxx of name xxxxxx.'

My 'E' drive is 2TB with 205GB free. I really don't believe that the cluster(s) in error are bigger than 205G, but what do I know?

Anyone have experience with this problem?

Thanks.

Preferred Solution: Backup fails with a 'device error' code 0x8078012D/disk read error

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

So after I gave up with Synctoy I tried to use the so awesome best backup methode which is built in, and who would have guessed that, it doesn't work correctly. I'm trying to make a backup including system image (I choosed the userfolder and Programdata folder as normal backups) and I just got some error that it can't be completed due to some I/O error, code 0x8078012D. I have done some googling and found out that this problem already exists since 2 years and it keeps existing. Seriously, is there even any solution for this or is it impossible to fix this? Does the backup function with system image even work for anyone at all? Or is it just some commercial stuff to make windows look better? Why does microsoft throw out such stuff which doesn't even work after 2 years? What's so hard about copying some files to external hdd? All I want is to backup my hdd and to do some fast backups like with Synctoy, which only copy new/changed files so that I don't have to waste my HDD lifetime by copying each week over 300 GB onto it. What can I do to make built in backup function work? And if there really is no way to make it work, what other programs could I use? I already know good methods such as copying the complete partition with Gparted for Knoppix or Acronis Disc Director Suite boot CD but then I still got the problem (aw I accidently wrote program here, see, programs=problems ) that it takes ages because I must always re copy the whole partition. Any suggestions?

It looks like the volume shadow copy service is ok ? (it should have startup type - manual).

Can you make a system image on its own (left button option -create a system image)?

If not and you have a 100MB system reserved partition check what the free space is. You can see it by using "Disk Management". It needs to have 50MB or more free.

Hello,

I recently received a message on my laptop saying my Hard Drive was failing so I proceeded to buy a brand new external hard drive to back up all my files. When I am backing it up, it gets all the way to 97% and then it ends saying it wasn't successful with the Error code: 0x8078012D. The error message says 'The operation failed due to a device error encountered with either the source or the destination. If the source or destination volume is on a disk, run CHKDSK /R on the source or destination volume and then retry the operation. Details: The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.

I have looked up solutions online and done CHKDSK /R for both C: and G:, where the external hard drive is connected to, multiple times. I have also turned off my security software while performing the back up and I have also set Volume Shadow Copy and Windows Backup Service to manual in the Services Window. I also run on Windows 10. I really need this back up to work because I don't want to lose all my files. I would really appreciate any help at all!

Cheers!

Windows 8 Backup has been working fine for 12 months to an external Seagate USB hard drive.I'm now getting a "device not ready" message with error code 0x80070015 and the backup fails within 30 secs of starting. I've checked the drive for errors and there are no problems. I can read /write files to the external drive. There is ample spare space on the external drive to store the backup file. Please advise how to investigate and solve this problem.

Filling out System Specs would save asking all about the external drive model, your system HD etc..

Some externals spin down to save energy. Some can be set to spin up and stay up. I don't know what you have for HW.

Ok, I've been researching solutions for issues with windows 7 backup for weeks now and have had no luck. My VSS service is running fine, and everything was backing up fine til a short while ago, and has been failing since. I have been backing up to a network share on my file server. My roommate has been having the same issue for some time now, however he was attempting to do this with an external hard drive. Same error of 0x8100019. I've tried everything I can think of and I've had no leads thus far. Any pointers on this would be helpful.

A:Windows 7 Backup fails, error code 0x8100019

Same problem, it actually backed up the first time I used the program that is on WIN7. Now it gives me the blue screen. I have deleted the file it makes and start over, same thing happens. I have tried to change the drive from basic to dynamic it won't allow me, reason is I have a laptop. But I am more confused since it worked the FIRST time and now it's not allowing me to finish! It's actually frustrating cause I have already lost everything on my hard drive before and really don't want it to happen again. I wish I had the answer but I'm still searching.

I have a suite of Windows 7 workstations on which I now cannot do a system image backup, although I used to be able to when I first installed them. The backup target is the D: drive of one of a pair of 2008 R2 Foundation servers (either one). Once I've selected the target server and drive from the "Select a Network Location" dialogue, and entered appropriate credentials there, back on the "Where do you want to save the backup?" dialogue, when I click the "Next" button, I just get a message box "An error has occurred: The parameter is incorrect. (0x80070057). Close Windows Backup and try again". Needless to say, that doesn't help.

I've come across many threads on this and other forums with similar problems, but none of the suggestions I found (like setting the locale to use '.' as the decimal place, increasing the virtual memory to a preposterous size, or running CHKDSK) have helped.

I know malware is not the problem since these workstations and the servers are on a closed network with no external connections at all, and all removable media are disabled.

Workstations:
HW: Dell Precision T3500

A:Windows System Image Backup Fails to Start (error code 0x80070057)

OK, folks, riddle me this if you can:

I fixed this problem as a by-product of fixing another one, apparently unrelated, which was that I couldn't access the workstation's DVD drive - I just kept getting the dreaded "Access is denied" mantra. In my searching, I came across a suggestion to uninstall the drive and reinstall it. Seems kinda extreme, but it would certainly initialise its security settings.

Well I did it, and sure enough I now have full access to the drive, but then when I opened the Backup toolbox to create a new system repair disk, I found the backup to my system servers is now working, along with correctly identifying the DVD drive and an external USB HDD I have connected as usable backup devices (which it didn't before).

It makes about as much sense to me as getting your TV to work by turning the kitchen tap on, but there you go - that's Windows for you.

Hi,

On Windows 8. 1, I had no issues with this speaker. It's a JBL Charge. After upgrading to 10 it worked fine until a reboot when it failed to connect (it pairs, but won't connect, and the speaker doesn't appear as an audio-out option in Sound settings).

The Bluetooth wizard in PC Settings says "Driver error" next to the speaker icon.

Poking around in device manager, I see this error:

"This device cannot start. (Code 10)
{Conflicting Address Range}
The specified address range conflicts with the address space."

The only references I find to this error online are for different (and quite old) version of windows, and seem unrelated to Bluetooth.

I can't even look at the "resources" tab for help because it appears to have vanished in Windows 10!

Is anyone else experiencing this?

The hard drive has failed and will need to be replaced.  A retail laptop SATA hard drive can be used-Western Digital, Seagate, Toshiba, etc. Just be sure to get one of at least equal capacity as the original in order to use Recovery Media to install Windows. It can be larger, but not smaller capacity. For instance if you have a 500GB hdd you could use a 750GB hdd but not a 320GB hdd. Your model is not one of the easiest to replace hdd on but the Maintenance & Service Guide will help you or your chosen repair shop.http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c04438537

obviously, there is a problem with the hdd. I would like to fix it or recover data but that is difficult to do if computer won't start with it plugged in, even though the os is installed on another drive. So, what would you suggest? I would like to be able to use the computer without having to reinstall windows on the ssd, and possibly fix the hdd afterwards. I could also try starting with the hdd plugged in, but this doesn't seem to be feasible.

Thanks for the help. Please give suggestion for either solution you think would be best.

I have a Dell XPS 15z laptop, spec. is i7-2640 processor, 8GB memory, 750GB hard drive. The problem is that it often freezes and when restarted it suggests no hard drive, "No boot device found". If I go into the BIOS there is no hard drive, if I boot into the diagnostics screen (F12) and run thr tests on the hard drive it comes up as passed, if I then restart the laptop it will boot into windows 7 Ultimate.
Evertime it freezes it won't boot after a restart unless I run diagnostics then it will start OK.
My thoughts are that it is hard drive, although all tests I have carried out on it suggest its OK, one of the times it booted into windows I ran the Seagate seatools and it was fine.
Anyone any suggestions as to the cause?

A few days ago comcast went off and I had to unplug modem, wait, then plug back up and restart system. I got a "Disk read error press control, alt, delete, to restart" error, tried that same thing so I shut down and when I turned back on it booted fine. I have since moved... just set up the system and am getting the same error except this time shutdown/restart isn't working ( The OTHER problem I realize is this... this is a tempory move! Most everything I own is in a storage unit, boxes to the back, furniture to the front and guess where my disks are? Right! I put printer, shredder, disks, everything I didn't just HAVE to have in the storage unit. My XP CD is in there SOMEWHERE. It is NOT an option to find it... Can anyone offer ANY help at all?
Thanks

Hi
I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate connected to network with Server 2008 (R2).

I am trying to backup the System Image [only] to a share on the server without success:

[Window Title] Windows Backup: Troubleshooting Options

[Main Instruction] Check your backup

[Content] Windows Backup cannot read the backup destination.

[Try to run backup again] [Change backup settings]

[Expanded Information]
Backup time: 8/05/2016 6:20 PM
Backup location: \\Server2008\backup\
Error code: 0x8078006F

The backup location is a valid share on the server and is accessible (and read/writeable) from my Win7 machine. Both SYSTEM and Administrators have "Full control". When setting up the backup, the location is tested and a username and password requested - these are accepted (and wrong ones are not, so some sort of check is being carried out), however when I attempt to run the backup (either manually or on schedule) the backup runs briefly (a few %) then fails with the message "Windows backup did not complete successfully" then the message box as above. No files are created at the backup location.

A search of the web finds a lot of similar questions and a lot of wrong and useless answers. This has been an ongoing problem for some time, but I really would like to have a regular scheduled backup. Has anybody got any clues, please?

A:A disk read error occured error after restarting

Hi there dylan151,

Disk Read Error normally means the computer hard drive is going bad. The best thing to do right now is to scan your computer hard drive for errors. Go to a working computer, go to the manufacturing website of your computer hard drive and download the diagnostics utility. Put the program onto a bootable media(e.g. USB flash drive, CD, etc.etc.) and boot the computer to the diagnostics utility program. Follow the on-screen instructions and test the hard drive for errors.

If you have important data on that hard drive, take the hard drive out of the computer and use a Hard drive-to-USB adapter to connect your computer hard drive to a working computer. Transfer your files onto the working computer.

Hope everything works out well for you, please provide an update when you can, thank you.

Hi,

I have an IBM ThinkPad R40 laptop (very old) with win xp/ sp2, not sure how many of the components are the original ones it came with though.

My first problem is that when I tried to install SP3 (from the Microsoft site), my computer didn't take too well to it.. any time I would restart the computer it would say the installation had been successfully completed.. but I saw that it still didn't say "SP3" on the menu when right clicking on My Computer/ Properties. So, during one of the times when I went to restart the computer, when it came back on it gave me a disk read error and then Windows wouldn't load.

I think I had my Kaspersky Antivirus program running on it while I was trying to install SP3 in case that could have had anything to do with
it.

My second problem is, that while trying to get Windows to start, I had reset to the default settings in BIOS. But then when I restarted the computer, I got an 1802 error saying that I had an unauthorized network card and that I should remove the card etc.

I read the Wiki 1802 error help page, and I think the most practical of its suggestions in my situation would be to do the pin 20 thing, I think something about putting a piece of tape over part of the pci card before putting it back in but I don't remember right off... but then again I installed SP3 under the assumption that everything would be fine, as well as figuring BIOS's default settings ought to be legitimate for the computer to function more than sh... Hi Butterfly, where did the disk read error appear? Was it on the black screen you see when you first power on the computer? A disk read error is normally the result of the computer not being able to read from the hard drive. When that's the case, it's time to replace the hard drive.

Windows Backup fails with error "unable to write backup files to external drive Q:" message. The primary reason for the backup is multiple large company files in Quickbooks, hence the "Q" drive letter. I've checked other threads and nothing suggested there seems to be relevant to this issue.

It was working up to two weeks ago, running with an every day at 11PM schedule. The Q: drive is a 7 month old 3TB WD with 2.05TB free which tests out as healthy. All files can be accessed on the backup drive up until the date when the backups began to fail to complete.

Specs:
HP EliteBook 840 G1 Laptop

Windows 7 Professional 64
Intel? Core? i5-4210U with Intel HD Graphics 4400 (1.7 GHz, up to 2.7 GHz with Intel Turbo Boost Technology, 3 MB cache, 2 cores)

A:Windows Backup fails with error

If the backup drive Q: is formatted FAT32 instead of NTFS, then you would not be able to copy files larger then 4GB
Being a 3TB drive, it should be initialized as GPT instead of MBR. Any drive larger then 2.2TB must be initialized as GPT.
Run Check Disk on the Q: drive. Go to Start/Search and type CMD, Right click the CMD results and Run As Administrator. In the Elevated Command Prompt type the drive letter for the drive (eg) Q: and press enter. (eg) Q:\> at this prompt type chkdsk /F and press enter. Now type a Y for Yes to Unmount the drive. I have Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit and for the past week or so my system has
been getting this error 0x8007007B and quitting when doing a daily backup. Today it
looked as if it was going to finish with no error. It got all the way to 70 something %
done and then it got this error 0x8007007B and said it could not complete and to try
again. I only have C: listed once - Local Disk (C: (System) Protection On.

I have searched and searched and cannot find a solution to this backup error.
I even deleted the backup set that it was using so it would create a new one and it
still gets this error and quits.
Does anyone have a solution to this? I would like to be backing up my HD as I have a 1TB USB drive just for this purpose.
Thanks in advance!

I didn't have the exact same error, but since you've already deleted your previous backup set you could try this,Brinks tutorial to reset your backup to default and start over,
Backup User and System Files - Reset to Default Configuration
I don't know if this will solve it or not but if look around here there seems to be several different backup problems that I've noticed but not exactly the same one I had. I hope this helps, if not I'm sure a more qualified person will be along soon. D.

Just installed 64-bit Win 7. Everything works well except backup fails. The error is "Away Mode". Unlike Vista, not way to turn Away Mode off.

Suggestions? 3rd party utility? Trick? MSI board in HP desktop - now way to get to BIOS to turn off.

Thanks...

A:Backup Fails - Away Mode error - Win 7 64-bit

Maybe try this:

go to control panel >> power options

click on "change plan settings" for the plan you are using

click on "change advanced power settings"

scroll to the bottom to "multimedia settings" and expand it

under "when sharing media" select "allow computer to sleep"

This started happening after the recent patches from Microsoft.
It happens on 2 machines (both 32 & 64 bit) that backup was scheduled and working weekly for months.
This is one error message that looks suspicious:
The backup was not successful. The error is: Windows Backup failed to write the file: '<backup location>\WindowsImageBackup\<Computer Name>\MediaId'. (0x80780122).
Also, this:
The backup operation that started at '‎2010‎-‎10‎-‎05T04:27:33.656390900Z' has failed with following error code '2155348258' (Windows Backup failed to write the file: '<backup location>\WindowsImageBackup\<Computer Name>\MediaId'.).
Please review the event details for a solution, and then rerun the backup operation once the issue is resolved.
Finally, an error message that is not correct. User 'Fred' has read/write privs to the entire drive. I wrote files to each directory and erased them to make certain:
The backup operation that started at '‎2010‎-‎10‎-‎05T04:27:33.656390900Z' has failed because the remote shared folder '\\DISKSTATION\Users\Fred-PC' that you are using for a backup storage location is not writeable. Please make sure
user 'Fred' has write permissions for this location, and then rerun the backup operation.

Again, this just started happening after both machines were backing up happily for months.

Is it Synology?

If so, I’m afraid it could be a known issue, please refer to

I have a machine running Windows 7 Home with a C drive of ~220 gb (120 of which are used) and a D drive of ~600 gb (90 of which are used). I'm trying to backup C onto D, but I keep getting error 0x8007000e, which means there was insufficient memory.
I don't really understand that; VSSadmin doesn't show any shadows anywhere, and D should have room to spare. Could it be trying to create a shadow copy of C on itself? If so, how can I get it to use D?

My RC of Windows 7 Ultimate Complete Backup failed with error 80780048. And Binging (not Googling) revealed this same error occurred in Vista during 2008 as mentioned in other forums on the web. It failed after several hours of backing up to my 500GB USB drive. To start I had 300GB free and only required 168GB for backup.

A couple of years ago, I used Windows Vista Ultimate to create an image backup. Then several months later I had a problem and had to do a restore, That failed. So from then on I used Norton Ghost 12.0. Well I gave Windows 7 Ultimate backup a try and this problem occurred.

Anyone else have a problem with this? Any fixes?

Hi,

Recently I installed a fresh copy of win7 x64. All ServicePacks and updates Applied.

Scheduled Windows Backup kept failing with error 0x80070002 (The specified file was not found) and nothing helped (tried numerous things) until I found someone saying that putting a drive letter on the hidden boot partition on the system drive helped. And it did !!

Backup run just fine now - but why ??
Removing the driver letter makes the error occur again!

It seems to be somewhat related to the BitLocker driver when booting the machine. It fails validating the boot partition saying its not able to read partition \\?\Volume{....}

A:Windows backup fails with error 0x80070002

A fresh install doesn't create a "hidden boot partition"! Or are you referring to volume "system reserved"? That's not a hidden volume. It's a volume without a drive letter.

I am having an issue where my DVD/CD RW has a code 19 error in device manager. The drive still works as I used it to boot a Windows CD and run a startup repair to see if that found anything. I tried uninstalling the drive and then scanning and it failed to install the drive. I also tried uninstalling the drive and rebooting, but it wouldn't install. Any suggestions?

For about the past two months Windows update has failed to run. If I try to run it manually it just sits there spinning its wheels. It does not appear to end or produce an error code.
I have seen the message "could not check for updates automatically"
I've been to the MS site and downloaded both
MicrosoftFixit.wu.RNP.6329995410378136.2.1.Run.exe
and
WindowsUpdateDiagnostic.diagcab
and the third party
Repair-tool.exe by ParetolLogic
but none of these fix the problem.
Today I have run SURT as instructed and the output from sfc /scannow is attached.
Update is still refusing to do anything.

Running Win 8.1 Pro 64bit and I have been trying for over 2 weeks to install KB3008923 - tried 8-10 times. Everything seems successful until the restart and then at 67% complete it bombs out and undoes everything. Have tried downloading and running manually (same results) and have tried the Windows Update Diagnostic Tool. The diagnostic tool finds several errors and says they are "fixed" but it lies. I can run the diagnostic several times - either restarting between times or not) and it still finds and "fixes" these same errors. And no luck getting 3008923 to take either before or after "fixes" and restart.
Error Code for the Update is 800F0922 and I've attempted fixes outlined for it including resizing the System Reserved Partition in case it was too small. Still no joy.
Running Norton Internet Security so don't know if it's got something locked out or not. I am logged in as an Administrator, so I assume that the Diagnostic and Updates run at sufficiently elevated privileges so I'm not sure where to go from here. Any help would be much appreciated.

After a week waiting for reply, I guess I'm the only one so afflicted, so guess I'll have to install an old system image, see if it'll update and start arguing with Microsoft about why I'm having to reinstall Microsoft Office 2013 (downloaded product) within a month of initial installation.

Hi
I been trying to install update KB950125 but it keeps failing with error code 80070020.

I've tried disabling all non MS services, disabling my McAfee security centre, downloading the individual file for a single install all no luck.

I've also tried in safe mode but the installer won't run at all then.

Once windows update actually said it was successfully installed but the history said it failed and it was still on the list to install.

Any help will be very much appreciated!!

On an Asus laptop with Windows 8 preinstalled, I have secure boot on, AV off, but every time I try to install the update from the Windows Store I get as far as:
Getting the update ready
This App wasn't installed, - view details.
Something happened and the Windows 8.1 couldn't be installed. Please try again. Error code 0x800703f9

I've tried installing with nearly every non-windows process disabled, but that doesn't help. I've Googled the error number, but although I found instances of it (back to Vista), I couldn't find what the error was or anything helpful.

A:8.1 Upgrade fails, Error Code 0x800703f9

I've also experienced this issue. I know that on my system I managed to partially break the Windows bootloader and I've assumed that's the source of the problem, having tried a lot of other potential resolutions that haven't worked. I've tried repairing the bootloader without success so I think it's going to take a "refresh" or reinstall to solve. I don't have time to do that at the moment though so I can't confirm that that will work (I may not do it in the near term anyway because I don't trust it not to nuke the dual booting Linux partition on the same disk... which is how I managed to damage my bootloader in the first place :P)

When I tried to install windows 8.1 x64 again it failed and got the 0x80070570 error. I also tried windows 7 64bit and windows 10 64 bit but I got the same errors. 32-bit OS installs fine though. Of course all my attemptse were clean installs.

After failing twice, I read and followed the directions MS posts for this error code: (1) download and extract subinacl.exe and (2) create/run as admin the reset.cmd batch file, as instructed. Reset.cmd ran as expected. Additional attempt to install update failed with the same error. I have hidden the update for now.

Note: The parameters of this error do not fit. I am Admin and logging in as such. Also logged in using super administrator account. Firewall is not obstructing. Updates are set correctly. Also, please do not bother suggesting running SFC.exe.
