Can't delete corrupted file on desktop -- Freezes explorer.exe

Q: Can't delete corrupted file on desktop -- Freezes explorer.exe

Hi,

I created a file from a certain freeware, and everytime I right click it, drag it, or browse for it in something else (I can see it in Desktop), it freezes my entire Windows explorer and forces me to restart explorer.exe

Everything else on my computer is fine. I just need to delete this corrupted file.

Oh and, I dragged it into Kaspersky and it froze.

Please help.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Can't delete corrupted file on desktop -- Freezes explorer.exe

Hi Zorai

Did you try deleting it from Safe Mode? If you haven't tried that yet, give it a go.

If that doesn't work, perhaps the easiest way to delete it would be to boot your PC with a Linux Live CD (or DVD) and delete the file using it's file explorer. Easy to use versions are readily available (and free - since they are "open source") ... some of the more popular versions are from Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Knoppix, SUSE, Scientific Linux ... etc. Your favorite search engine will yield many results.

The desktop will be listed under the Users folder --> Users\username\Desktop -- since the file is on the Desktop, you should be able to delete it permanently from there.

Best of luck

P.S. ... might have Kapersky run a full scan, too.

Why can't you delete it? Is it giving you an error?

If it's saying the file is in use.. you can use Unlocker.

I know I have seen this problem here before, but couldn't unearth anything on a search of this site, so I will post it. I'm trying to install Open Office on another computer after a removal of it due to a message to the effect that "it won't start, so why don't you try a reinstall". I keep getting an error message when trying to reinstall that "some cab files are corrupted". I think this goes back to the original reason that it wouldn't start, because when I look at Open Office in Program Files, I still find that dll. I tried to delete it hoping that it would clear things up, but I get a message that it can't be deleted because it is corrupted. I tried Dr. Delete, in normal and safe mode, but it just says "File deleted, are you sure you needed Dr. Delete?", but the file is still there. Anybody know of a way to get rid of this thing? Any help would be appreciated.

In an earlier thread, I've learned how to correct system problems using 'sfc' and 'dism'. The question I'm asking here, is once you know exactly which files are corrupted, how can they manually be replaced?

The PC I'm still working on had several bad files, but between 'sfc' and 'dism' only two remain. Using 'sfc /scannow' there are no more problems, but 'dism' still finds two, one that relates to 'flash', and the other being 'skydrive.exe'.

My plan for tomorrow is to remove 'Flash' completely, which I expect to remove that corrupted file. But 'skydrive' seems to be a part of Windows Explorer. On a mounted, running file system, is there any way to replace a single file with a non-corrupted version?
The best idea I can think of is to place a copy of the file, in this case 'skydrive.exe' in the same folder as the corrupted file, but with a modified name, maybe 'skydrivexxx.exe'. Then, boot to Safe Mode with Command Prompt, navigate to the appropriate folder, rename the corrupted file to 'skydrive-bad.exe', and finally rename the good version to 'skydrive.exe'. Would Windows actually let me do this?

Last question - on another computer I used for checking, skydrive.exe is in this folder:
c:\Windows\WinSxS\amd64_microsoft-windows-skydrive-exehost_31bf3856ad364e35_6.3.9600.17484_none_77b78082feb70f58
If this idea is even plausible, are there other things I would need to do, possibly with the 'attrib' command, to allow the system to accept what I've done?

Hi - I need help in deleting files that look to be corrupt. Both the file name and the extension contain Chinese character. When I try to delete them I get the following error: " Could not fine this item" followed by "This item is no longer located in M:\..."

This is what the file names look like: 1䔴7.m伴s , 1愴8.m䔴s , 1縴5.m픴s
The file sizes which are incorrect range from 64 KB to 230 TB.

I've tried deleting them via the dos prompt, safe mode, I've used unlock on them with no luck, I have switched our my SDD to one that I had as a backup and connected the problem one as a drive but I run into the same problems.
One of the files crashes windows when I try to delete it.

Thoughts?

anyway, If I made a youtube video this would take 10 seconds to show you but as I have to type it out manually, it seems like a lot.. but TRUST me it is nothing.. once you do it the first time, you will see it takes 10 seconds to actually do..

it just looks like a lot to explain it to you.
I'm sure people are going to tell you to try programs to delete your file.. that's fine.. but I urge you to try the"built-in" windows system of networking deleting!! no need to download any other programs!
I posted all pictures that should totally help you see what you need to be looking at!

Now just try it!

1. right click on the folder that has all the files in it you want to delete/change. then click "properties" ... then look for "Sharing" tab up top and click that.

2.then click "advanced sharing" in the middle of the window you now see.. tick/click "share this folder"

3. then click "permissions" and click under "full" Allow tab area *see picture below*

now click "ok" or "apply"

My tale of woe starts with trying to delete some folders containing jpeg files.

I got the message "Cannot delete Thumbs.db. The file is corrupted and unreadable". So I deleted the jpegs individually without any problem, and the folders then looked empty - but when I tried to delete the empty folders I still got the same message again, that Thumbs.db was corrupted and unreadable, so couldn't be deleted.

The Thumbs.db files didn't show at all in the now 'empty' folder - and don't show up either in a Windows Search for 'Thumbs' in All Files and Folders. (I have the 'Show hidden files and folders' option ticked In Tools->Folder Options->View of Windows Explorer).

Next thing (new) is that Chkdisk now runs every time I bootup with the message 'One of your disks needs to be checked for consistency'. I'm not sure if this has anything to do with the original problem, but I had already made an image of my disk a few days ago, so I restored that image to a new bigger hard drive I had already planned to install. Restore went OK, new hard drive seems fine, but I am getting the same 'One of your disks needs to be checked for consistency' message - so I'm guessing the problem is not with either of the hard drives. Checkdisk doesn't show any errors.

I'm right out of my depth here. Anybody got any suggestions? And how do you delete files you can't see?

Really appreciate some help.... Read more

I have created a VM with Windows 8.1 64 bit ISO. After the VM created at some times, File explorer and Internet Explorer links in the task bar is broken and the desktop background has became black. And no Videos, Pictures or other libraries working.

As soon as the OS installed, I automated a bat file which would do the following things.
* Disable UAC Policy
* Disable IPv6 by changing the registry.
* Delete local Admin account by logging into domain Administrator account(In AutoUnattend, I will do a auto login command, which do a auto login with domain administrator and run a bat file which will do these steps)
* Determine OS version (This to identify whether the installed OS version is higher than Windows 7.  If it is higher than Windows 7, I will invoke a auto installation of our party software)
Now, Could you please let me know why the libraries are not functioning properly and what is the reason behind broken links? I am confident that it is not happening due to the batch file or is it so?
Also, I have checked the Ease of Access Center under Control Panel.  Remove Background images check box is not selected.
Thanks, Please let me know this as soon as possible.

Whenever I try to start my computer, nothing is displayed on the screen (just the background wallpaper, but no Start bar or desktop icons). By opening the Task Manager I see explorer.exe is not being executed, and I'm not able to use the run command to open it. It seems the file is permanently damaged. The only way I can navigate the Internet is by using Safe Mode with networking (as I'm doing right now), but in Safe Mode I'm not able to install new programs (and I need certain specific software for an online job interview tomorrow).

Is there any way I can repair explorer.exe? I've already tried making a copy of it, pasting it in the same C:\WINDOWS folder (but with a different file name, i.e. chicken.exe) and modifying the shell file in the Registry editor in order to run that new chicken.exe file. Doing so I'm able to reboot my computer and enter Windows normally (out of Safe Mode). All the desktop icons are displayed and the Start bar as well (but it's the old Start bar, not the Windows XP one), but I have no wireless Internet connection and I'm not able to open Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox. I run Vista 32 bit and have seldom encountered problems with my laptop. Recently I have been having trouble deleting/moving/interacting with a stubborn empty folder. I have looked for previous threads dealing with my specific problem, but I have, so far, not succeeded. Whenever I try to do anything with this specific folder my Windows Explorer will stop responding and when I try to open any explorer window they just come up blank (shows no folder location/does not appear to load). When I restart my computer (which I have to do manually) windows explorer works fine. Whenever I try to delete this folder the standard deletion window opens up, but it never deletes the file (This can go on for a long while before I get upset and restart my computer). This is not an urgent problem, but it is a bothersome one to be experiencing. Any help is and will be greatly appreciated.

Basically the title. Almost every single time i move ANY file or delete any file, the window im in freezes and the progress bar freezes. Now when i create a new folder the window im in freezes also, but i'd say its only 50% of the time. The temporary solution i found was to go to the task bar, end explorer, and restart it using run. Now when i check back on that folder, whatever action I did (ie delete file) does do what i wanted, its just the freezing. I'm looking for a permanent solution to this and any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Hi erod49, try looking in your error logs. You have given a good discription of the problem. Tel us your system specs as well.

To get into your error logs,

Left Click on Start Menu.
Right click on Computer and choose manage.
Click on the event viewer.
You now have loads of options to try and pin down what is happening.
Expand the error tab.
Look for things in the last 24 hours.

Other things to look for are updates, has an update caused this. Has your computer autoupdated any of the motherboard drivers.
Have you tried to restore the computer before the error started or has it always been like that.

So my fiance is not very tech savvy and is incredibly impatient. She torrents films (which I'm aware is already a red-flag)
and today a file she dowloaded to her HP2000 with Windows 7 Ultimate  has been giving her trouble. When attempting to play said file the window goes white or translucent and the blue loading wheel hangs forerver. When attempting to delete, right click or trash the folder of said file the same thing happens. I have attempted to get rid of this in Safe Mode and have even put Avast and Malware Bytes on there, running full scans but to no avail. The laptop already had a slow CPU

I'm aware that there's a warning label attached to torrenting but if I could get any advice, it would save me alot of sleep and keep my fiance from yelling at me anymore.

Hi! So on my 2 month old laptop which ive never had any problems with, the other day i started it up to find when my sidebar started to load, i got a message saying

"Settings.ini is being used by another process. Close the other program and then click Retry, or click Cancel to exit Sidebar."

I've searched through various forums which delegated to edit the account controls or run as admin, neither of which have worked for me.

In addition to this, nearly every application i open tells me the file is corrupted, even programs i may have installed literally 2 seconds ago...i downloaded a registry cleaning software and it told me it was corrupted before i even opened it. It also say that C:\Users\Public\Desktop folder is corrupted which has caused some funky things on my desktop, like loss of icons, and various programs that i didnt think were related to not work properly.

Please, any help would be greatly appreciated, ive spent hours and hours trying to find a solution buried in the web out there, and have had no luck at all...

ok, so i think i made a big mistake and i have not clue hot to fix it...
so in the past on my older computers (ones that ran XP) i would make a new folder on my desktop and name it "alt+0160" and it would just have no name then, then i would change the icon to nothing and i would have an invisible icon and i would throw all my program icons into that folder and get rid of recycle bin icon so there was nothing on the desktop. well i just bought a laptop and it has vista on it and i did the same thing but i just deleted all the icons and hid the recycle bin icon in the properties somewhere i dont remember where but im sure you know what im talking about... anyways so the invisible icon wasnt a big problem till it turned into a black square that cannot be deleted, removed, renamed or anything i can move it, vista recognizes it as an icon because when i try making another one it asks to merge the files but it doesnt and it keeps the stupid invisible one, i cant even rename it or delete it or anything on the my computer stuff or anywhere i have no clue what to do maybe somebody can help me...

is it giving access denied error message while trying to delete ?

If so check the security permissions whether u have full permission, and try taking ownership of the folder.

A friend of mine just downloaded one of those files on Limewire that has like 30 different artists in it's title. It shows up as an .mp3 icon but it won't open in iTunes, Windows Media, or Winamp. When I right click it, there are quite a few different options missing, most noticeable is "Delete." Properties, cut, copy, rename, and most of the other standard options found on other files are also missing. The only available options are: Play, Open, Add to Windows Media player list, Play in Windows Media, Open with..., and Send to, are all that are available. It also doesn't work to highlight it and press the delete keyor drag to the recycle bin. Any ideas? Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

A:Can't Delete File From Desktop

Probably a fake. The network is full of those. Just to be sure that you have done this proprerly, the keyboard shortcut is Shift > Delete not just Delete. If that does not work, boot into Safe Mode & try deleting it from there. Run an antivirus scan in Safe Mode as well.If you are unsure of a file, before you download it, use Bitzi Web Lookup.

There's a file on my desktop that's awkwardly titled "Tony Scalzo's First Solo Album by Tony Scalzo ? " exactly like that, and it won't let me delete it. It comes up with this message:

I'm just wondering how I should delete it? Following another tutorial I was able to navigate to the desktop directory using cmd.exe, however I was not able to delete the file using the command "del filename" as the file name is long and wasn't accepting anything other than the word Tony.

Any help appreciate!

Thanks

Hi, my friend is using Windows XP SP1. (Just a note, he cannot upgrade.)

Anyway, He recently tried to download a game called Voyage century online. But he cancelled the download, and now the unfinished file is on his desktop.

The file will not delete. It says the file is in use, yet there are no processes of it as far as we can tell.

He has tried logging on and off, restarting etc. Everytime he tries to delete it, it says the file is in use. It is just the Setup file, and its not even finished downloading. But it has been removed from the firefox download qeue.

Any suggestions to get this thing off his desktop?

THANKS

I'm having a problem with my pc. Everytime I click on an icon on the Desktop or try to copy/move files and folders from the Explorer file browser, Explorer.exe keeps freezing. 2 instances of Dr Watson (drwtsn32.exe) show up in the Task Manager when Explorer.exe freezes and when I terminate them, Explorer.exe crashes and then restarts itself and the problem disappears until next time. Other applications I have running while explorer.exe if frozen works OK so it isn't the entire computer that's freezing, just explorer.exe . I've been looking for solutions via Google and I found a Windows XP hotfix might be to blame (KB908531) http://ufies.org/archives/001815.html . I Uninstalled the hotfix and the problem was fixed, but It started happening again. I have Windows Auto Updates turned off and I didn't install any updates since then. A:IE Explorer freezes desktop icons

Slow Internet Explorer?

Do you have the option ticked, in Internet Explorer, 'Tools', 'Internet Options', General Tab, 'Delete browsing history on exit' ?
Also do you use the program 'CCleaner' ? It does a good job of clearing out the files that you collect while browsing. These can slow down I.E to a crawl. Also it's better not to have too many 'add-on's'. To test this, type into your 'search' bar, (from Start), 'Internet Explorer'. In the list, choose the second option down, 'Internet Explorer-no add-ons'. If that is faster, then you can go to 'Tools', 'Manage add-ons',
then clear some of them out. Hope that helps.

Hi,
I have created several shortcuts on the desktop that I use very frequently (with keyboard shortcuts). Sometimes (probably 1 out of 3 times) when I try to run them using the keyboard shortcuts, explorer freezes and becomes completely unresponsive for about 10-30 seconds, and then resumes, loading the program.

The strange thing is that the shortcuts always run normally when simply double-clicked. Does anyone have any ideas as to what might be causing this, or what I should troubleshoot?

Thanks for your help

Hello,

I am running Windows XP Professional since March of 2007, version 5.1.2600. Service Pack 3.0 is installed. My computer is an HP Pavilion dv9000.

Lately, when I go to right-click on an icon on my Desktop, everything freezes. Or if I left-click and try to drag an icon to the Recycle Bin, the graphic image gets over there but then it freezes as a ghost image over the Bin, and everything freezes.

At first I was just having that problem on the Desktop itself, but now I notice that when I am within Windows Explorer and want to do my usual file and folder shuffling, it sometimes freezes as well.

The only way out of this has been to Ctrl-Alt-Delete and either stop Windows Explorer (which is usually Not Responding) or I have to Restart my computer if it's the Desktop that is freezing. Restarting doesn't solve the problem.

I am constantly defragging and I am very up-to-date with anti-virus (Avast! version 4.8 Home Edition) and anti-malware (Ad-Aware and Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware). I have been using the free version of Advanced SystemCare as my maintenance and cleanup tool, but I have only just now read the notice on this forum (I'm brand new here) that Registry Cleaners are more trouble than they are worth, so I won't be doing THAT again.

Can you help me to fix this?

Thank you!

Have you run RAM diagnostics? I suggest you try that first. D/L the CD based tool (ISO) and burn the image into a blank CD (see my sig for Memtest86+ link) using ImgBurn or Nero or similar program. Boot with this CD so you do not need to run the test in Windows.

So I have this file that doesn't have anything, not extention or file size at all. I tried to delete the icon from my desktop and Windows says
"Could not find this item"
"This is not longer located in C:/.... Verify the item's location and try again."

I then saw on another post, about running the command prompt to remove the file but was unable to do so. Not sure if I had done or mistyped something wrong in the command prompt.

A:Unable to delete file from desktop

Hello Patrick,

It may just be a ghost file. Right click on the desktop and click on Refresh to see if the ghost file may go away. If not, then see if restarting the computer will.

Hope this helps,

so i downloaded a torrent and was downloading through a torrent client. i ultimately decided to cancel this download, so i removed the task from my torrent application and deleted the torrent file from the desktop, where i'd originally saved it.

in the meantime, a duplicate file with the same exact name appeared on the desktop. the icon is a white folded piece of paper. when i first saw it, i wasn't freaked out, mostly because i'd seen this happen before. only when the torrent would finish, this extra icon would disappear. but this time around i canceled the download, which i believe has something to do with this.

when i try deleting the file, i'm told it doesn't exist. it asks me to verify the file's location and try again.

i've tried a registry cleaner and other recommended apps, but the problem seems to be that nothing can detect that the file is even there, so nothing is able to remove it from my desktop. i've also looked in the task manager under processes to see if anything was preventing the deletion, but hit a dead end road there, too.

i don't get why it's still there, and why it won't let me delete!! does anyone have any suggestions?

Hi and welcome to TSF

It is important for all new members to read and abide by our rules.

Torrents and P2P are mostly used for illegally obtaining copyrighted material. As we have no way of verifying the intent of the torrent user, it is against TSF policy and rules to assist with problems associated these activities.

I am using Win XP Home. I downloaded a .ram file to my desktop and can't delete it.

When I highlight it and click delete, it either says:

"Cannot delete *filename*: Access is denied. Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use."

or it gives me the Cyclical redundancy data error.

I've deleted any reference to the file in the registry, cleaned the temporary internet and Real Player folders, and tried to delete it at the command prompt, but continuously receive the "access denied" message - even in Safe Mode using the Admin account.

Strange - when I hold shift and press delete, the file "goes away," only to re-appear moments later.

Please help me get this off of my desktop. Thank you.

I recently decided to install cabal on my laptop again. I used internet download manager to install it. However, when I run the installer, explorer.exe becomes unresponsive and I have to kill it. Right clicking it gives the same result. I am unable to check the size of it. I've try defragmentation and it doesn't work as well. My computer doesn't allow system restore so I cannot restore it to a previous point.

I've done some googling and I found the command prompt method which asks u to do cd desktop. I've tried it but when I do it, I get this result.
Microsoft Windows [Version 6.1.7601]

C:\Users\NP Student>cd desktop

C:\Users\NP Student\Desktop>del 120306_CabalSEA_FullClient.exe
