[Solved] USB Smart Card Reader for XP

Q: [Solved] USB Smart Card Reader for XP

Hi Folks

I have recently upgraded from Me to XP - with no regrets at all. However there is one piece of equipment I have that simply will not work (the XP installation report DID tell me about this!)

I have a USB Smart/Flash Combi Card reader that I use in the main for bringing pictures in from my digital camera (which, although very good, doesn't use the USB port - it uses either Smart media or - you've guessed - the serial port (aaaarrrrgggghhhhh). Hence the purchase of a seperate USB Card reader.

Now as I see it I have 2 options;

1 - upgrade the USB reader drivers;
2 - purchase a new USB card reader for XP

I have looked around for drivers with no luck, so I guess I will have to purchase a new card reader. Anyone have any recommendations?

rgds

John

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A:Solved: smart card reader probs

I think your motherboard was build for Medion who unfortunately don't conform to regular standards with their connections. A card reader would normally connect to a USB connector on the motherboard but the Medion has a different one, so I would just get another card reader and connect to USB socket on your Asus board.

Hi,

Go to SUPPORT (above) and enter your MT-M (like 20BW-Z0CJUS as an example) but without spaces or hyphens in the search box.  It should give a list of features in "machine info".

Alternatively enter your MT-M here:  Parts Lookup for a very detailed bill of materials.

Has anyone attempted to add a smart card reader to an existing P50 (Type: 20FL)?  In doing some research online, I found that part number 00UR884 listed.  I ended up chatting with Lenovo Support and they provided a different part number, 04X5393 (which also has a substitute listed, 00HW553). I found the following set of directions, https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/documents/PD101157 I'm curious if anyone found these instructions difficult to follow and which part number you ultimately ordered (I assume they all come with the cable).  They look like they are in the $35 range for price. Thanks, john

Hey, is there anyone here who has experience in linking VFP application to a USB smart card reader?

I have a smart card reader and once the card is inserted into the card reader, I have to click on a button on the VFP app to activate the reading of the card. Can someone give me some help on how I could create an app whereby the program will know by itself that a card has been inserted and then start reading the card?

Tq and if you need further info please let me know.

CTKY

A:SMART CARD READER - USB TYPE, VFP App

Hi ctky,

What USB smart card reader do you have? Mine cost about $35.

I have a digital concepts smart card reader, and when I insert the smart card from my digital camera, it automatically brings up an app to select what to do which I select store digital photos onto hard disk or something like that - i.e. there is no separate VFP app involved as it is programming into the smart card reader to recognize over a dozen or so various smart cards and trigger the selection of what to do.

From the sound of it, your smart card reader is not capable on its own to know what to do, and clicking on the VFP app may be the only thing you will be able to do, unless you get a more capable one.

I've got a couple different CAC readers which I'd use to access various USAF web pages; however, I can't get Vista 64 to actually install them. I plug in the reader and Vista can't find the drivers. I have a disk with the drivers, and even when I guide Vista to the exact location of the driver folder, it claims there are no drivers and cannot install. Anybody had any luck getting Vista 64 to install smart card reader drivers? Thanks!

A:CAC reader drivers? (smart card)

Hello msdunkel,
i dont have anything to do with smart cards but i found this on another site, i dont know if it will solve your problem but give it a go, would you please post your results, good luck.

Something new with Vista... It operates a lot like Windows Server 2003/2008. To get the card reader going you should go to the "Control Panel", "Administrative Tools", "Services" and scroll down to "Smart Card". Make sure that it is started. Set it to "Automatic" in it's properties. Smart card use is not always automatic granted for users in Server or Vista

I purchased my HP through a 3rd party used which was working great. Then one day during a reboot I came across a black POST screen appears, RAM testing starts to count up and then I see and error about "system options not set". After less than a second, a blue window in the middle of the screen displays the message "smart card authentication" and below that, "smart card reader not present". From a bit of reading it seems like a BIOS problem but I can't figure out how to really reset the CMOS and get things working again. I've tried removing the CMOS jumper and booting the system, removing the power cord and CMOS battery for 10 minutes none of which has worked. Is there any way to bypass this to reboot my computer?I love this machine and would like to keep and I hope there is a fix that I havent found yet so I amy continue to use it.

I'm looking for a Smart Card reader and USB hub combination to fit in a 5.25 bay. I found one but it requires three internal USB ports. I have those on my Asus A7V card. It also needs to Win98se to work. I have the first edition and had some trouble once trying to use the internal USB ports while connecting my current USB hub. It sounds like 98se supports the feature. Are there any simpler products or a nifty solution of PCI cards and such?

What do you mean by niftier? If you have USB on the motherboard as well as the smart card connector (which the A7V has) why would you want to go out and buy another one? Go to SOYO's web site, they have bays for smart card and USB in one unit.

Hi, I'm new here - first post. Recently bought used W541 - all options except Smart Card Reader, so I bought new cable and used reader (FRU 04X5560). Installed them, but reader seems not working - could be out of order, but before search for another one just to ask if I'm missing something? In bios is Enabled, I've downloaded the driver from Lenovo support page, installed it but still no progress - can't see it in Device Manager. Search for new hardware does not detect anything. Tried to Disabled and Enabled it from BIOS - no change. Does any one have an idea why the official driver is for "Alcor SmartCard Reader Driver"? I read it should appear under same name in Device Manager. On my other ThinkPads (T430, T510, T530) is listed as "Integrated Smart Card Reader". I Google it, but seems no any threads about this problem. Any help or guidness is appretiated.  Thanks in advance!

Our business had purchased several T480s laptops without smart-card readers. Our department has a need to add smart-card readers into our laptops. I reached out to Lenovo support and was informed that the laptops have the appropriate cable already inside the laptop and that we only need to purchase the physical card-reader and install them.  I removed the back pannel of the laptop and found the appropriate port populated with a cable. This cable was a dual purpose. It is designed to feed both the finger-print reader and smart-card reader. According to page 56 of the Hardware Maintenance Manual the cable should fold/bend and turn 90 degrees and connect into the smart-card reader (when installed). The issue I am facing is that the cable has been cut flat and wrapped in fabric tape. This feels as though the cable was modified at the factory which prevents users from adding smart-card readers after purchase.  The laptop has a smart-card dummy plug blocking the port and is identified as an "optional" component on the Lenovo website. I am not sure why a modified/altered cable would be installed in the laptop just because the customer did not order a smart-card reader at the time of ordering. I have reached out to local service reps, Lenovo support and Lenovo warranty department. All of which point fingers at one another saying "go check with these people". So far, no one has been able to point me to a part number or a way to obtain appropriate cable(s)... Read more

Hello!
So, I ended up here because I didn't know what else to do. I have a problem with my Smart Card Reader(ID-Card). Windows doesn't let me install drivers for it manually, neither did it install them automatically. It all happened after updating Windows to the Anniversary Update. I tried to reinstall drivers, "Repair My Computer" with Windows disk(which didn't work for some reason) and used USB 2.0 and 3.0 to test whether it's the port problem. Also, manual installation gave me an error: "This operation requires an interactive window station."
Can anyone here help me? I need to use smart card reader every day, to be honest.

Sincerely,
fusionz

Are you sure you've got the right driver? Have you checked the manufacturers website yet? If there are no suitable drives you might want to try compatibility mode.

I have a Dell Precision M4400 with a build in Smart Card Reader.

On the laptop Windows 10 with all the updates is installed. I have, I think, the latest Broadcom driver installed for the smart card reader.
Now my problem: when I insert my ID card into the Smart Card Reader I get the error message "read error". I already changed the build-in Smart Card Reader with a new one but I still get the same error.
Is this a driver problem or does my laptop simply do not work with windows 10 anymore, or is it another problem?
All info to let it work would be very appreciated.

I can't uninstall the Ricoh Bay8Controller. I've tried disabling it in my Device Manager, uninstalling the driver, uninstalling the entire device, but it won't work permanently: after a reboot, the device shows up again.

I want to uninstall it, because it always shows up in the ?Safely Remove Hardware?. Normally, this icon doesn't show (and thus doesn't bother me), but with this piece of hardware reinstalling itself, the icons keeps showing up. Too annoying for words to describe...

If it wouldn't show up I wouldn't mind having it installed. Besides, I might need to use the device (it's a smart card reader) sometimes. I just don't want to see it on my task bar where it annoys me.

When I had Windows 7 and 8 installed, the device could be disabled/uninstalled/invisible. How do I achieve this in Windows 10?

(There are some additional devices, such as a fingerprint reader, that will neither install nor uninstall correctly. However, they only show up in Device Manager, nowhere else, so I'm good with that.)

I still use smart media cards for transferring designs from my laptop to an embroidery machine, manufactured in 2005. It cost $4000 and comparable ones today cost $8000. I can't upgrade my equipment; my equipment is for imaging but it's not a camera. I hope I'm in the right blog.
So, here's my question: I bought a brand new reader/writer by a company called Microtech, which (I since learned) no longer exists. I got it brand new from Amazon just 3 weeks ago, and it came with an installation disk but the instructions only apply to Windows ME and earlier. I have the disk in my laptop, but I don't see any installation setup. Can I just go ahead and plug the device into my USB port? Is there a patch or something I should install first (to enable Windows 8 to read this disk)?
I'm not handy with computers. I use it mostly for embroidery and shopping.

Windows 8 will most probably install the correct driver for you so just plug it in.
If for any reason windows does not install the driver there's no harm done the device won't work and we will have to think of something else.

Hey everyone. I am having trouble with my Multi-Card Reader/SD Card Reader. I am trying to take pictures off of my SD card and put them on my computer. I have lost my USB cord for the camera and can't locate it at this time or I would do that.

So anyway, I put the card in the SD card drive and the green light does not come on. I then open up My Computer and the drive isn't even listed. I checked in Device Manager as well and as far as I know, it is not listed in there either. If it is, then it is under a name that I don't recognize.

So anyway, I would greatly appreciate some help in getting my computer to recognize my Multi-Card Reader/SD Card Reader.

Hello

We're running Windows 7 on an hp Pavilion slimline s-51010 in a professional (real estate) environment with a Smart Card reader attached. We use it with a program called SentriLock to modify smart cards that unlock SentriLock locks.

We had problems with employees installing unauthorized software. To curb that, we changed the default user accounts to be "Standard users." That way they would have to enter a password to run an installer. However, we discovered that this was easily bypassed by inserting a smart card because the computer asks for either an Administrator password or a smart card. We've kept the password safe and it isn't easy to just guess it.

What can we do?

When a memory card is put in my removable storage card reader, the options should pop up on windows on "where would you like to store these files" or something like that. Recently, when I put in my memory card, the cursor will flicker like it wants to start to give me the windows options, but won't. What can I do to have windows xp pro, to automatically recognize the card reader when a memory card is placed it in. My auto-play is on for that removable storage, so it should start up. Thanks
Silverado.

I now have to go to that drive, and do an "edit" "copy" to move them to my hard drive.

The Microsoft AutoFix utility may fix the problem, see: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;822660

Hello everyone. I have a Travel Reader Model CRW-600. I just tried plugging it in. XP saw it but definately does not like it at all. After it froze my system I restarted and it wouldn't even boot to windows until I unplugged it. Is this thing completely incompatable with windows or do I need a driver. I searched Google and all I could find was Linux and Free BSD users that were having trouble. Could not find a driver for windows. Thanks in advance

You should be able to just click on "My Computer". The new card reader with a card in it should show up as a drive, usually identified as a reader. Then just transfer the files as normal.

Many cameras can also do it this way. You do not need any card reader / software. Just connect the camera with a USB cable, then turn the camera on, PC will see the camera as a new drive. Then transfer or whatever the pixs. One note, if you modify the pixs on the card, the camera usually will not be able to review them. I just bulk transfer them all to the PC photo drive used for storage and erase the SD Card, never monkey around with it in the camera itself.

I do it this way. Use the Edit >Select All, etc, etc if you don't already know how.

Hello, I have a question about SD Card Readers. I have one where you insert the SD Card, and plug in a USB cable to connect it to the computer. Does the SD Card use a USB Root Hub to connect, or does it use the Realtek 2.0 Card Reader?

My real question is, if I had accidentally uninstalled my Realtek 2.0 Card Reader built into the computer, will an SD Card Reader connected by USB be able to read the SD Cards?

Also, is there a way I can prevent SD cards from being read through a reader on my computer without uninstalling a USB Hub Driver? Like specifically prevent new Drivers from being installed, or prevent new SD Cards from being recognized? Such as using a free downloadable tool that someone may know about.

I have tried going to Devices and Printers, right clicking on my PC, Device Installation Settings, then turning off automatic driver installs. After I do that, and plug in a new device, it still auto installs the drivers and can use it.

A:Does an SD Card Reader need the Realtek 2.0 Card Reader Driver?

Disable the driver, through Device Manager.
