Lenovo Thinkpad W520 upgrade

Q: Lenovo Thinkpad W520 upgrade

I have a Lenovo Thinkpad W520 since many years and it is still one of the best laptop compared to those available in the market. I have successfully upgraded in the past my HD with a 256 GB Samsung SSD 850 PRO (MZ-7KE256BW). Now I would like to replace this HD with the newest 1 TB SAMSUNG 860 PRO SERIES 1TB SATA3 MZ-76P1T0B/EU.Someone know if there could be problems of compatibility? P.S. the operative system was windows 7 but I moved subsequently to windows 10. Thank you in advance for your reply.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

This laptop has been driving me crazy with the number of BSOD's encountered.  I receive at least 1 per week but often three to four over the last 4 months or so.

I have updated all of the drivers as well as the BIOS from the Lenovo site but the frequency of these crashes has not diminished at all.  I know of quite a few friends that have this same model and they are not reporting these kind of issues.  Just wondering if anyone can guide me to what I might try next.

Below please find the lising of the crashes I have had.  The minidump files are here: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/3064584/Minidump.zip

Thanks very much in advance.

Hey this is my first post as I'm new here. I have been having an issue which has been going on for several months.

Every 30 minutes, to the second, my laptop completely shuts down (I have tried running in safe mode too). No matter what programs are running, or aren't, it continues to shut down.

I have made a work-around, where I put the computer to sleep roughly every 28 minutes, then I wake it. This seems to reset the 'timer'. Lately it seems my computer will not sleep properly, or it will not wake from sleep (power button starts slowly blinking, not pulsing, green to black), however I think this is a different unrelated issue.

Things I have tried but have NOT worked: Running without battery, re-seating RAM, new thermal paste (I thought the problem originally had to do with the system temperature as it was getting quite hot), I have made sure there are NO TIMERS for sleep, or shut down set for the graphics card (NVIDIA Quadro 2000M) or in Lenovo Power Manager. I have made sure my drivers are up to date and that my BIOS is also up to date.

One more noteworthy thing; I had problems with my WMI event registration/viewer as it caused my computer to crash at completely random (minutes to hours, even to days) times. I ran a script I found (from a reputable website and I did a backup first) to fix this error I found in my event viewer (it did fix it). The 30 minute shut-downs did not happen immediately after I ran the script, but rather about a week later, perhaps t... Read more

I am going under the assumption that this page is right in telling me what the most up to date driver for my system is (I have a Quadro 1000M). Both Lenovo Vantage and System Update tell me there are no updates, and yet my most recent NVidia driver was from 2016 and several versions behind what the website says. No matter how many times I've downloaded and installed that package the driver stayed the same, so I gave up and used DDU to wipe the NVidia drivers out. Then I tried using the package again to install the driver and still it appears to do absolutely nothing regarding the NVidia Card. It doesn't appear under Device Manager. There's only an Intel HD Graphics 3000 and a Microsoft Basic Display Adapter. What am I doing wrong?

The easiest is to download the HMM (Hardware Maintenance Manual, which you can get from here: click me!) and follow the instructions from page 107 onwards. Take a look at the printed page # of the document, not the one your PDF viewer says.

On another site- someone told me that I could upgrade my laptop by changing out the CPU and hard drive. I went to the Lenovo site to try to get prices, etc- but there is NOTHING of the sort on the site. Only a warning about VOIDING your WARRANTEE.... but I'm already "out of warranty".

Is this possible ? Is this practical ? THANKS

A:Lenovo ThinkPad R61i UPGRADE

Welcome to the forum!

There's no hard drive size limit on your machine - so if you want to put in 500GB, go ahead. The same holds true for the drive speed - your choice.

Any 9.5 mm laptop SATA drive - including SATA II - will work fine, but you'd need a modded BIOS to utilize the SATA II speeds on your machine.

T9600 will not work. T7700 should.

Your machine can handle 4GB of RAM for sure. And yes, if both slots are populated, it works in dual channel mode.

You could upgrade the screen to SXGA+ (1400x1050) or UXGA (1600x1200) that were used on T60/p generation.

Enjoy the upgrade process.

Hi guys and/or girls, I am working on upgrading a business laptop which happens to be the Lenovo Thinkpad T410, now im putting an 250GB 850 Evo to replace the INSANELY SLOW HDD, however i am also upgrading the system from windows 7 and upgrading the RAM, now here is where i need help, I am going to be installing a 2x4GB kit of Corsair Vengence SODIMM, however I am unsure whether i should go for the DDR3 1600 kit or the DDR3L 2133 kit, now these are both the same price so the obvious pick would be the DDR3L due to the lower power draw and higher frequency, but the current memory installeld is only 1333, however the laptop is documented to work with 1600 so i know this isn't a problem, however I am unsure if it would even correctly downclock the 2133 or would it simply refuse to post, as well as this, would the laptop still attempt to send 1.5v to the memory or will it automatically do 1.35v as required by the DDR3L, oh how i do wish laptops all offered an "advanced" section within the BIOS which would allow me to tweak all of this stuff, however the only thing the bios lets me do with memory is set an extended mem test during boot which obviously is no help.  Thanks for your help

Hi all! I'm a new Thinkpad user and I've got to say, the Thinkpad experience is great. It's refreshing to come to a laptop with more features and better accessibility compared to other laptop brands. I love that nearly every inch of my Thinkpad is easy to get to and fix if something goes wrong. That said, I've been having screen issues lately.  Basically, every time I move the Thinkpad off my lap and onto my bed, the screen slightly ripples in the middle. Like this, except it occurs towards the lower middle half of the screen. Gently pressing on the bezels of the screen (left and right) also cause ripples in the same area (lower middle half)--maybe this is supposed to happen, since you're deliberately pressing against the screen. Moving the screen up or down also makes the ripple occur. I always move my screen back and forth as gently and firmly as I can--with both hands gripping either side of the screen. But even when I'm being super careful, the screen still ripples. Tapping the back of the screen ever so slightly also causes ripples. Now that's what's worrying me the most. A gentle, slight tap shouldn't cause ripples on the screen, surely. The ripples get BIG if I tap the lower middle of the Thinkpad's lid. I can't say that I've noticed this behaviour before. It seems to have started just recently. I removed the screen's plastic frame and cleaned the sides of the LCD, thinking that something was stuck between the frame and the LCD, but doing ... For those tasks you wouldn't need a Core i7 or discrete graphics, save yourself some money and go for the T530.The only disadvantage would be 1600x900 instead of 1920x1080, but it would be hard to see the difference.

Hi and welcome, heyArhumGlad to see ThnkPad and x220 lover 1. x220 supports up to 2x8 GB RAM installed. With BIOS up to v.1.28 it supports 1333 Mhz memory by default (by design) and memory 1600 Mhz w/o issues. With 1866 Mhz memory some issues might appear, depending on the memory stick manufacturer, model, parametersStarting with BIOS v.1.29 using not designed memory type is locked.2. x220 mSATA slot supports SATA II interface. There are no SATA III lines of laptop chipset in that interface. So, use any mSATA drive, on your choice - capacity, budget, vendor..., not in the m.2 formfactor (!). Intel, Plextor, Crucial, Corsair, Samsung, Kingston... Not NoName and OCZ. Of course, most mSATA III drives are back compatible with mSATA II slots. The choosing between mSATA + HDD and regular 2.5" SSD drives depends on the storage capacity you need, laptop usage profile.3. I don't know about palmrest cracking issue despite the fact I contacted with hundreds of the x220 owners, since the beginning of 2011. I'm sure there might be a bit trouble with parts fixing under palmrest, their routine. There was the single case I remember - the user has breaked it himself due to the impact.

Hello to everybody,Recently I have bought a Lenovo Thinkpad X220 and I want to increase the memory, (by default is 4 GB) to 8GB or 16 GB. if it is possible. My question is if this laptop support without any problems or errors 16GB RAM of memory, because officially it is only 8GB.RAM, but I have seen on internet, people with 16GB Ram in this laptop, Are there any problem with this? If so, upgrade to 10GB or 12GB RAM would be posible instead? Also I want to increase the capacity in my laptop (by default is 320 GB.HDD), and I want to put a 500 GB SSD Disc, and if is possible to maintain both the Hard Disc anda SSD Disc, it would be possible to put SSD Disc into the PCI Express slot and mantain the Hard Disc at the same time. Please Help! I ran the Lenovo BIOS Upgrade for Thinkpad E540 for Windows 7; it didn?t work. (?Failure to Read BIOS?) So I downloaded the ISO version, and burned it to a CD. My laptop boots up ONLY from the CD. Now exactly what do I do now, in simple instructions, to upgrade from the ISO CD to the new updated BIOS so that it would be on my laptop (instead of having to boot from the CD every time)? Thanks!

A:How do I Lenovo BIOS Upgrade for Thinkpad E540 for Windows 7 from ISO CD?

Welcome to the forum!

If you boot from the CD (and the ISO was correctly burned on the CD), you only need to follow the instructions on the screen. If I remember correctly you need to press Enter once, (eventually confirm by pressing the "Y" key) and then the BIOS will be updated. After that you can remove the CD and boot normally.

You need to be connected to the AC and have a full charged battery before the update.

Hope this helps...

Hey Lenovo Enthusiasts! I am about to purchase the Lenovo Thinkpad 550s, and I am tempted to purchase the baseline memory (4GB) and storage (512GB) HDD.  I want to make sure that I can indeed upgrade the memory to 16GB of RAM and the storage to a 256 (or 512) GB SSD. In my research earlier on, I noticed that somebody had posted a link to the parts list:https://download.lenovo.com/parts/ThinkPad/w550s_frubom_20150130.pdf I don't know what half of this technical jargon is, but from what I gather, I have found an SSD made by Samsung on Amazon, and an 8GB memory made by Data Memory Systems that seem to abide. SSD:http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-256GB-2-5-Inch-Internal-MZ-7KE256BW/dp/B00LMXBOP4 Memory:http://www.datamemorysystems.com/parts/lenovo/03X6657/ Questions:1) Could somebody wiser than me please verify that these products will work for the w550s? I was going to purchase them from Crucial, as they say that is is "100% compatible" but I am not sure still.Crucial: http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/compatible-upgrade-for/Lenovo/thinkpad-w550s 2) In regards to the warranty, does anyone know if I were to mess up the data preloaded on the HDD that is put in the laptop, by trying to transfer it to the SSD, would the warranty cover fixing this? Kind regards,Spencer

A:Lenovo Thinkpad W550s Memory upgrade to 16GB and S...

Very disappointing. Yes, I have the same problem (son, since it is your problem!). I note that over 189 people have at least looked at this question you asked before we decided to have you purchase the W550S...and after calling tech support one last time after my son purchased the machine (and was told there should be no issue)-we see BSOD multiple times within an hour.  They happen so quickly that it is hard to even note what the error message is.... I replaced his 512 HD with Samsung SSD 512GB drive. I used a disk duplicator-everything seemed to go great. Then I put in 16GB of RAM-again, everything seemed great. However, the notebook is only now being used frequently as my son is starting school now-and as said above, the BSOD is making me think this has something to do with the SSD or RAM replacement. Yes, obviously, it's fairly easy to replace with the original parts and see if the problem goes away-but he wanted the SSD and more RAM, so even if that fixes the issue-we will likely get rid of the notebook. BUT:  here is what disappoints me:  absolutely no comment on my son's original questions. I'm guessing I won't get input from Lenovo either....will try to call tomorrow, but we are almost beyond the point where we need to return the SSD/RAM and notebook if we want our money back. A little guidance from Lenovo would be appreicated before we need to make a decision.. Thanks,Steve

Hello,I understand that this question was probably asked a million times, but unfortunately I haven't found a viable solution for my problem. I'll try to describe it in details. I bought a pre-owned W520 laptop, that's supposed to have a Windows 7 Pro. For some reason, the previous owner removed the COA sticker, that was located under the battery. The hard disk is also wiped clean, so no recovery partition is available. I want to install and activate a geniune Windows 7. Some pirated copy of windows is installed there, I tried to extract a license key with Belarc Advisor, but it was some generic OEM key found on the internet, i.e. not genuine. The summary of my talk with the local support and service center- I can't just install any copy of Windows 7 (say download an image from Microsoft), it won't activate without a COA key that is missing- if I can get a recovery media for this exact laptop, it will maybe activate from the key in BIOS- we don't know where to get this recovery media so if someone could help me with these questions- can I legally download a recovery image for this laptop (I only found some links for windows 10 downgrade, which I'm not eligible for)- can I extract the key from BIOS and maybe install a generic Windows 7 - is there even an OEM key in BIOS (because the guys from support center told me it's only for windows 8 and 10, not for 7) and will it activate? thanks in advance. Oleg.

First I'll summarize what's going on, then I'll list all  the details that could be related to this problem, no matter how small, in order of most likely related to least likely related. I'm an IT technician so I have some grasp of computer troubleshooting, just keep in mind. Alright, so the issue is that my Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga (can't find exact model, label only days Yoga and its dated in 2013) will not boot into Windows 10 after I have done an upgrade from Windows 8.1 using Microsoft's media creation tool. More specifically, I was able to do the firat time setup and boot on once but after searching for Windows updates and restarting, the computer will not boot on. The most likely reason for this I believe is that the laptop doesn't recognize the SSD with Windows 10 on it. It can detect it in some ways but not others. In Lenovo diagnostics I'm not able to run a storage test, which is an option I know is usually there because I've troubleshooted these before, which leads me to believe it doesn't recognize it. However, boot menu and BIOS recognize the drive. Attempting to boot to it from boot menu gives a long black screen and then it takes me back to boot menu. Letting my computer boot up normally also gives a long black screen after the ThinkPad logo and the automatically goes to boot menu. The other diagnostics for Lenovo hardware all pass. So some... I recently upgraded to Windows 10 when installing a new Samsung SSD 850 EVO 500GB and now my internal SD card reader which I think is a Ricoh will not work when I insert a SD above 4GB, it works for smaller cards.  I have tried installing the drivers from the Lenovo KB and my Windows Troubleshooter says all drivers for that device are up to date.  One thing that I have noticed is that when I insert the card the Ricoh device pops up, but also responds with an uninstalled PCI Serial Port.  I do not know what device this is, but it doesn't show up unless an SDHC card is inserted and remains after I take it out, but when I do a restart it has disappeared and it is not there if I insert a 4gb SD card first.  Another thing I have noticed is that the card does pop up in the Disk Management utility, but it is unreadable.  I have checked the card on cameras and a friend's computer and know that it works and is not corrupted.  See pics below and the PCI serial port ID # and you can see my frustration... hopefully someone can help fix this issue, I need to read SDHCs for work all the time and would prefer not to have to buy a peripheral device to do the job...

I got a W520 and installed the card, drivers and hardware is seen properly (I'm using Win7 x64bit)but it keeps looking like it is turned off (how you turn off wifi).  Though when I press FN+F5 it doesn't show mobile broadband, only wifi and bluetooth I use the AirCard Watcher app and it keep saying Airplane Mode, radio is off.when I disable and enable the card via network settings.    The Aircard watch see the card for about a split second when I reenable it but then it goes right backto airplane mode.. I also tried using the Lenovo access connection and when I try to connect to mobile broadband . it keep saying no signal or sim not activated  BTW: I have a working Verizon Sim card that I use for a usb dongle and I have a x240 with broadband card that works fine with the SIM  so it's not a sim card problem.

Mock me if you like, , but...  Figured I would share, so others might benefit? There are a few flavours of AC Power issue out there (some bad 170W Power Supplies, some Lenovo Battery Manager issues, etc.), but if you are greeted with the warning on your W520, and are using a true 170W Power Supply, stop and check the Power Supply plug connection IN to the dock. I know sounds ridiculous, but...  First, given the slotted construction of the 170W Power Supply connector, NEVER force anything!  But, once you've lined that up, are sure and slid it in to the dock, at that point, make SURE that it's really fully seated in to the connector!  PUSH it to ensure! I've been having the issue, and finally realized, on my setup, there is an extra "hump" you have to push the connector past. (How long have I had this machine?  FACEPALM!)  If you plug it in, it will work, but give errors and be problematic on charging.  Once you FULLY plug it in, that problem goes away. I think it's a function of the middle pin not being fully and properly seated - so a test was failing (making it think it was a 90W supply?). And a PS for folks: The original dock for the W520 was the "4338-30U (eSATA)", 170W. I can report that the "4338-35U (USB 3.0)", 170W DOES in fact work with the W520. Sadly (as I expected), no, you don't get another USB 3.0 port on the back of the dock.  It de-rates to a USB 2.0 port, but that port does work -... I have a Lenovo Thinkpad W520 running Windows 10 x64 bit and would like to use the Bluetooth. Unfortunately, there is currently only a Microsoft Generic Driver installed and it won't find any of my Bluetooth devices. I would like to download a driver that will actually work and so I went to the Lenovo website to find a working driver. However, apparently there are no bluetooth drivers that are compatible with Windows 10 and this laptop. So how am I supposed to be able to use my laptop with bluetooth? Thanks for any help in advance.

I've been trying to contact Taiwan Lenovo's warranty registration team that sometime in the second week of June, someone suddenly placed a "Loaner Machine" warranty upgrade on my Thinkpad T460s (Upgrade type P2L) without my authorization. The description of the P2L upgrade is"This product is entitled to loaner machine support for up to 1 year in which actual support duration follows machine's base warranty. Loaner machine is available for customer with repair service exceed 3 business days turnaround time. This service is limited to in-warranty service claim and exclude out of warranty, customer induced damage or machine DOA. Any damage to the loaner machine will be charged to the customer." The laptop was purchased in March, so I was not happy about this mysterious upgrade that suddenly appears 2.5 months later. In fact, I can isolate its sudden appearance to be between 6/3 to 6/9.Additionally, this upgrade has been preventing my ability to purchase a warranty extension on Taiwan Lenovo's website.I contacted Lenovo Taiwan about this, and they said that this is a special favor for all Lenovo Taiwan customers starting from the beginning of the year. However, a friend of mine has a Thinkpad purchased from Lenovo Taiwan in February, and it doesn't have this mysterious upgrade that appears out of no where. In any case, Taiwan Lenovo refuses to remove this upgrade, saying that I could call them if I want to purchase warranty extensions. But I would prefer to purchase warr... Read more

I have a Lenovo W520 and have been getting the fan error at start up, which shuts the computer right back down. I have just replaced the fan the other day and still keeps happening. I have the computer apart enough to tell that the fan starts spinning after I press the power button but stops after several seconds. Then the fan error comes back up. Any helpful suggestions, I don't really want to replace the mother board

Hi! I've recently done a BIOS update using the built-in lenovo update center. but alas - it seems to be a fail as I can't boot anymore. As far as I understand, I can recover BIOS using Crisis recover disk program, but I have no idea where to get the BIOS file (.wph) for my w520, any ideas? Thanks!

A:Where is BIOS.wph? Lenovo w520

Hi there Dacadey,

The first post here: LENOVO BIOS RECOVERY may provide some insight to you with your particular issue. The post mentions the .wph file.

I'm not entirely sure it will completely answer your question but as I said, may provide some insight to help you solve your problem.

Ed

There is a fan problem with Lenovo W520 when running Windows 10.  Fan is not spining at it's maximum when games are played.  For example when you play World of Tanks, fan will not spin fast enough and you might encounter problems, like fps drop.  To remidy this problem you need to download and install TPFanControl.  When this application is running fan will spin at it's maximum value of 64 when needed. Lenovo development team, please work on power manager or some sort of fix for this.

Dear Community,As the title suggests, I did a full system reset recently. That was because my old HDD seemed to start dying and slowing down the system a lot.Now I have a brand new HDD (Seagate firecuda 2TB) and installed everything I found on the Lenovo support page for my System (4284-4DG) after installing all important Windows updates. So far so good - I guess. At least Lenovo Service Bridge/System Update don't suggest any further software. But I'm facing some issues already:1) The Hotkey Feature Integration seems not to work! Not only do I not see any OSD, but also half of the Fn+FXX combinations aren't working (like Fn+F5 - Fn+F8, Fn+F2, Fn+F3...).2) I can therefore not access the Communications Utility (unless searching the .exe) nor the Connections Tab (F5). In the latter one Bluetooth isn't even listed (but always on)3) The Power Manager is very limited in functionality like I do not have a Battery Management button nor can I adjust the default screen brightness in the Energy Profiles. I remember that this was very possible before.4) The Device Manager shows still unknown objects: PCI-Communication Controller (simple)(? => loose translation from German, maybe slightly different English name) and an unknown device. As said before, I installed every driver I could find in the list from Lenovo. I have no clue what this could be.5) Windows Update shows me some optional Updates which I did not install yet, because I always read that one should install drivers from the PC ... Read more

Which is the best SSD drive for a Thinkpad W520 Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2720QM CPU @ 2.20GHz. I see from reviews that the: Samsung 840 EVO is at the top of the line.http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Electronics-EVO-Series-2-5-Inch-MZ-7TE250BW/dp/B00E3W1726/ref=cm_cr_pr...  Crucial M500 is supposedly a guaranteed compatible drivehttp://www.crucial.com/store/mpartspecs.aspx?mtbpoid=F6B36DAAA5CA7304 Which one of these drives will work best for me?  I am running Windows 7 Ultimate with 8 Gigs of RAM. I'd appreciate your past experiencies, tips, and recommendations on these two SSD's or any other SSD worth thinking about. By the way I have the a 9mm 500 gig stock hard drive.  Not sure if i need to get some sort of housing for a 7mm drive to fit in my laptop. Thank you.

A:W520 SSD Upgrade?

I have put both of these in a mix of T and W series laptops.  I prefer the 840 EVO. It has a nice tool kit and I think it also has a 5 year warranty vs 3 with the Crucial. The installation was a breeze and the cloning tools made it very easy to swap them out.  I ended up picking up a USB cable that let me plug in the SSD for the cloning:http://www.amazon.com/Corsair-2-5-Inch-Solid-Cloning-CSSD-UPGRADEKIT/dp/B00CI8MT9W/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF...
