I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I used 7zip to open up a .gz zipped/archived file. It seems like 7zip extracts and downloads the files to open it? Is that correct? If so, where are the files located? Or is it just stored somewhere temporarily and then deleted after?

i have this really weird problem where i downloaded some videos from a site (the site only plays them and doesn't let me download but i got the videos in the "temporary internet files" folder) but when i find them in the folder some are .mpg but most of the others are encoded as .txt files, i use media player to open the txt files and it works but i just wanna change it bbak to an mpeg or wmv...i've tried to add .mpg, .avi, or .wmv at the end of the names but it doesn't work... plzz helpppp!!

A:Video encoded as .txt files??

There's no telling what the actual encoding is. Since they don't want you to download them, I suspect they'd also be considered illegal downloads if you did figure it out. We don't help with those kinds of requests here.

Hey Guys
I have a little problem. FILES from capturing screens and videos, extracting compress file etc. are NOT showing immediately, I need to refresh the directory folder just to see it.

For example:

I will extract the "a.rar" it contains "a"
After extracting, no files were added to my desktop
But when i refresh my desktop
The file is now shown

A:Delay Showing Extracted Files

This could be related to a corrupted IconCache.db file. Delete C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\IconCache.db and restart your computer.

I don't know if other people had this problem but I have a folder that I need to extract but apparently when I extract it to desktop, I click on the folder and noticed some files were missing. I check the unextracted folder and all the files were fine.
I realized when I extract the folder to desktop, the files aren't actually deleting because they seem to be there in the unextracted folder but not there when I extract them.
the next thing I tried is extracting one file that gets deleted from that folder into the desktop and then nothing happens. So the main thing is that the files wont extract to the desktop for a weird reason. I use McAfee anti virus and I tried disabling
everything possible from it and extracted the file. But it didn't work; also i'm running Windows 10.
All I know is that this is probably not from my antivirus and it has to do something with the file not being extracted.

Please help me fix this problem ASAP as the internet has no good answers or no answers at all.

I have a 64-bit Windows 8.1 HP. It came pre-installed 7-Zip. When I extract it changes the file names automatically upon extraction.

On my old Windows 7 desktop I had WinZip and this never happened. So I purchased and installed WinZip on the Windows 8.1 and the same thing happened, it changed the file name automatically.

I have tried all over the net and on this site to find a solution but to no avail. I also compared WinZip settings on the W7 and I can't really tell if they are the same as it is different on W8.1

My real concern is that when I extract the folder, it changes the files names adding additional characters where there would be spaces and then an extension of numbers.
Windows 7 did not do this at all. Please help!!! How can I turn this off?

Hi, the problem I have is that any file with a mono audio track (both video and audio), will not play in WMP. Video files play without sound, and audio files will perhaps play for a couple of seconds (without sound) before stopping. I don't recall doing anything that should cause this to happen, and these files all play fine in other programs. I've reinstalled WMP, but still no go.

Any help would be much appreciated.

A:Mono Encoded Files have no Sound in WMP

Well, I've rolled back the system, and it seems to work. I still don't know what exactly the problem was, but I guess this can be considered solved, lol.

I would like to ask how to set WinRAR to exclude files with the exact filenames: 'thumbs.db' or '.DS_Store' (without the quotes, ignore case) from being extracted from an archive.

Ex. Files with these filenames should not be extracted:

while files with these filenames should be extracted:

Abcd thumbs.db.txt

In 'Settings->Security->Prohibited file types->File types to exclude from extracting', if I just type in 'thumbs.db .DS_Store' (without the quotes) in the field, will it work the way I described?

Also, does anyone know if WinRAR has a syntax guide for the Prohibited file types list in case I'd like to add more filenames or be flexible with the rules I need?

The reason for this question, is I'd like to not extract unnecessary files from ZIP, RAR or 7z archives in Windows 7 - files like Windows 2000/XP's Thumbs.db file (Thumbnail cache) and Mac OS X' .DS_Store file (Desktop Services Store), while not being too strict and also not extracting files which just contain 'Thumbs.db' or '.DS_Store' in its filename.

A:Setting WinRAR to exclude specified files from being extracted

Yes, it should work.

Here is a piece from WinRar 4.0 Help file

Files to exclude
File masks and file names to exclude from the archiving operation. Wildcards are supported both in path and name parts of masks. If you need to specify several masks, separate them by spaces. If mask contains spaces, enclose it in quotes. For example, you may enter:

c:\temp\info.txt *.bak *.tmp *\temp\

to skip c:\temp\info.txt file, all .bak and .tmp files, all temp folders and all files in temp folders. You may enter file names manually or use "Append" button to browse for file to exclude.

Detailed information about exclusion masks syntax is provided in description of switch -x. This switch uses the same format of exclusion masks as "Files to exclude" field.

What was the extension of the compressed file and what types of files did it contain?

But it really isn't about the program doing the compressing but the data that is being compressed. Some types of files, such as many image files, are already compressed and any attempts at further compression will accomplish little if anything. Some file types, such as text files and some others, compress very well.

Hello. Last year I installed one utility called Wrye Bash used to manage and install mods for the game Oblivion. This particular utility is distributed as a .zip archive, it has no installer. The installation instructions tell to simply extract the archive to the same installation folder where the game was installed. This archive contains folders and subfolders within it. Since July last year, I haven't used or updated Wrye Bash, and 75 new versions were released! Now I'd like to uninstall it first before installing the new version. Uninstalling wouldn't be necessary if the files to be extracted from the new archive overwrote all the files extracted earlier from the old version archive, but this doesn't happen for all the files: some of them are not overwritten. This brings me to this forum.

I'd like to know if there's any way to automatically uninstall (delete) all the files extracted from an archive. There must be a simple way to achieve this I'm not aware of. The hard way would be in Windows explorer to select each and every file in the destination directory which was extracted there from the archive, and then delete them. Is there any easier way to do this? Basically, I wish to know if there's any way to undo the extracting procedure, by automatically removing the files which were extracted to the destination directory.

I was hoping that converting the original .zip archive to a SFX archive with WinRar, I could then use this .exe SFX archive both to install (extract... Read more

My computer has been a little on the slow side recently, and I've been wanting an excuse to update to Windows 7 32 bit from Vista, so I did that recently. Update went fine, internet browsing was still a little slow, signaling to me that something might be wrong.

Norton scan -- turned up nothing
Malwarebytes -- borks out with an error message every time it reaches Norton's program folder and has to shut down. Typical Windows error message "Such and such had to shut down. Would you like to send a report to Windows" etc.

Panda Activescan however, came up with something:

I tried deleting it, no go. I tried deleting it with Killbox. That worked, but then it just came back. I don't want to have to buy Panda Scan just to get rid of it, so any help would be appreciated. Fortunately, it looks like it's the only nasty bug I have on my system right now, but google hasn't really helped me find any good fixes.

Still can't get rid of the damn thing. Help?

make a new folder on your drive and name it icons and then when you want to change an icon to one you have unzipped, point it towards the folder you have created "icons"
it's not like Fonts, that has it's own folder - icons are usually associated with the program or app - when you want to change them, you have to tell the program or app where the new icon is that you want to use

This thread may be in the wrong section, but here goes anyway:- I have received an email headed "Content-Type: text/html; charset=ISO-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: base64" containing just a long string of letters and symbols. I realise that this is probably some sort of spam message but I'm curious to know a little more about this sort of coding, what it's used for and how to decipher it. Can anyone enlighten me, please? (If it's relevant, my email service provider is AOL.)

A:Encoded email

--> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISO/IEC_8859-1

In a typical email, there are 2 parts - a text file & an html file. Example - here is one email from my Live Mail inbox as seen behind the scenes -

11/07/2009 09:09 3,785 message000(iso-8859-1).txt
11/07/2009 09:09 8,174 message001.htm
That is one email kept by the system in a .eml "folder" -

It is not necessarily SPAM - it's probably in UTF-8 enriched text format.

Hi All, thanks for reading.
I have this bug type issue, when i extract files from either a .zip or .rar, every now and then when i go to delete the extracted files they appear to stay where they where, be it on the desktop usually or a specific folder, the files however have actually been sent to the bin but they still appear to remain where they were extracted too.
The only way i can make them go away is by stopping explorer in DM and restarting, then the 'ghost' files have gone from the desktop or folder.
I am totally up to date with updates, i ran all sorts of scans but nothing seems to stop this occurring from time to time which is also annoying because it doesn't happen every time !!!

I need to upload a PCM encoded .wav file (16 bits, 8000Hz) to a call center server.

I originally recorded the sound files on an iPhone which output the file as .m4a. Using Audacity, I converted thse files to .wav, 16 bit, 8000Hz, but I wanted to ask if the original .m4a file that the iPhone produced would have been PCM encoded.

I'm having trouble with some of these sound files, and I am wondering if it could be due to the original file (.m4a).

I'm going to re-record this stuff as straight .wav but I wanted to inquire about this as I'm new to sound recordings.

I tried posting over on the audacity forums but my IP is blacklisted, even though I have never posted on that site before.

An .m4a file is a lossy compressed format, so when you convert it back to .wav you're going to lose some quality.

Hi everyone, thanks in advance for your time.

I just got rid of the infection and the Laptops status is back to normal.

However, all the stuff in My Docs/Pics ect are tagged .ENCODED - Removing .ENCODED does not allow the file to open sadly.

The ransomware wanted you to wire some $ to them for the decryption method, and gave you a 3 day window (Im guessing when they cycle their drop accounts) "Or else F U" basically.

My customer did not do this, nor do i think the hackers would of given him the solution anyways lol.

I read elsewhere that only the beginning of each file is infected and has code inserted to it that can be removed or something... did anyone make a script to fix this by chance? it seems it has been out in the wild since November-ish last year.

Is he SOL or maybe can i delete all the .encoded and do some data recovery for his old stuff?

Any solution of anykind is welcome, thank you for any insight or help.

I found an old British TV show on DVD, from Amazon UK. When I went to play it, it said something about British region encoding. I am able to play on my computer it by changing Windows Media to British encoding format.

But I want to burn it to U.S. encoding! (this is legal by fair use).

How can I do this? Will Windows Media player do it, or do I need to get other software? -Row1

A:burn british encoded dvd to U.S.?

I've never tried it before. But I imagine you have to "rip" the DVD to your computer first, and then burn it again to a new blank disk.

Obviously you can't just re-encode the DVD, it can't be written to anymore. And you can't make a direct copy or you're in the same boat. So you have to rip and burn.

If you already have DVD burning software, you can use a program like DVD Shrink (http://www.dvdshrink.org/what.html) to save the DVD to your computer.

The only thing is that, when saved, and re-burned, I don't know if the country code is automatically changed, or if there is additional stuff you have to do before burning. But DVD Shrink will get it to your hard drive, in any case.

Good luck!

In an OpenOffice (version 3) text document it is possible to insert a table containing merge fields that are populated from a relational database.

It is also possible to perform calculations on cells, as in a spreadsheet. That is, a formula editor allows a cell to contain a formula that will display the result of a calculation on two other cells of the table.

This works perfectly with hard-coded data in the cells but I have been unable to find a way to perform calculations on cells containing merge fields representing data from an external source. All attempts to do so have produced an "Expression is faulty" message with no further hint. I have been unable to find anything relating to this in the somewhat chaotic OpenOffice documentation.

The aim is to convert a spreadsheet-based invoicing system to run from a relational database, thus eliminating duplicated data such as company names and addresses, and making integration with other documents using some of the same data easier and more efficient.

Can anyone help, please?

it may be the imported data from the data base is TEXT rather than a number to calc
in excel you can use =value() to convert a number thats formated as text into a number

I just tested in OpenOffice Calc and it has the same issue

I downloaded a .RAR with a 4 gig .mdf and a small .mds in it, and when I extract either one with WinRAR the files are nowhere to be found, but when I check my disk space I have 4 gigs less free. I tried searching for all files with the .mdf extension, and I tried turning on "show hidden files and folders" in Folder Options, but no luck. I tried three times in a different location each time, but the files are still nowhere to be found and each time 4 more gigs disappeared.

I've tried other .RAR's and they work fine. I have XP SP2. The name of the .mdf and .mds are in Japanese, if that makes a difference, but I have the Eastern Language Pack installed. Does anyone know how I can get my disk space back?

A:Extracted file can't be found, takes up space

i assume you log in as the machine's administrator, so what u need to do is go to control panel, folder options, select the view tab, then uncheck the hide extensions for known file types also uncheck the hide protected operating systems files.

Then do a *.RAR search of files in folders in ur local drives which hopefully will pick it up

Referring to Windows Me again. Since I cured my last problem 'lack of resources' (overload of old internet files I think)I have been 'infested' with "VBE Folders". They suddenly arrived in pretty well all my Word document sections - all are empty. I have tried throwing them in the recycle bin but they keep re-appearing. Do I need these? If not, how can I delete them, then deter them from re-appearing? If I must keep them, can I hide them? They eat nothing, make no noise, and seem to be harmless but their (unnecessary?) presence in the document lists annoys me.

If you're getting vbs files, and they keep reappearing, I would suggest a scan:

I help run a network, and have noticed a number of users devices hitting strange URLs - one for example is pasted below. All appear in the same format with a static IP and an encoded path.;h%B9%B2%06%BE%O%12i%FD%A6%87%D6%D3
For all of the URLs I've checked, they all seem to be operating a web server on port 2080, which is "Powered by wjas". I haven't found any useful information about this sort of web server

Hey one and all,

I'm just wondering if anyone out there would know what would happen to my Acer motherboards hard coded Win 8.1 product key, when I use a Win 8.1 Pro key to upgrade my system (By using the Add features to Windows in Control Panel) Would the new Pro key replace it? Or what, if anything relevant to me, the user, would happen? haha

I'm a student with a University here in the U.K, and we have Dream Spark membership...so free Windows 8.1 Pro (or Vista) all round! (o

A:Windows 8.1 OEM Product key encoded on Motherboard

It may or may not remain there, however the new key would be the active or installed one. I did the same thing and the OEM key did not show up in ShowKey 1.1
