I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

The last time I ran scandisk on my son's computer, it said it couldn't run immediately and would I like it to run the next time I turned on the computer. I said yes. Now every time I turn on the computer, it tries to run. I actually successfully ran scandisk (turned off ZoneAlarm and antivirus and it ran) myself, but can't figure out how to tell the computer not to try to run it every time we turn on the computer.
Windows XP Dell with 512mB RAM I religiously run Norton antivirus, spybot, adaware and spywareblaster.. I also regularly clean out his temp files....

I'd love to figure out how to stop this scandisk from running. I can't figure out what to do...

Thanks for your help!

Hi,

Not sure if i?m In the right area but basically I was wondering if there is a software or program that you can install on your computer that you can give certain instructions to complete.

In my particular case, I would like it to transfer money between my bank accounts to take advantage of a particular rate. Because the amount is so low - I need to do this multiple times and I don?t want to sit in front of a computer manually transferring like 100,000 times.

So I was wondering if there is anyway at all I can set something automatic and list how many number of times I want this done so that it actions it for me? I have a Mac computer as well.

Thanks and sorry for he long post but really looking for some help, Suggestions or a point in the right direction.

Cheers,

Hello,

I recently received Microsoft's Small Bus. Server 2003 Evaluation Kit. One of the few programs that you can keep is FrontPage 2003. That is the only disk I installed. Now whenever I start Windows XP, Excel 97 runs on its own. This is an older version I keep for special apps. I was going to try to stop this by editing the registry, but I don't seem to have, or can find, an HKLM key.

Could use some advice. Thanks.

Hello,

I have an external USB hard-drive plugged in to my computer, and for the past few days, the autoplay windows pops-up every time after Win7 loads.

Is there a way to disable this start-up autoplay feature without affecting autoplay in general?

Thanks!

A:Autoplay runs automatically on start-up

Type in 'Autoplay' into the start menu search, and press enter.
Click on the drop-down menu for 'Mixed Content', and select 'Take no action'.

Or if there is an option for external drive, select 'Take no action' as with above.

I'm not sure exactly how to word this, but i will try :)

I recently had an issue with my PC (systemax with windows 7 already installed), where in the middle of running i would get a blue screen with a lot of text and something saying "commencing memory dump", after talking to a friend from work, he said it might be my RAM sticks (MEO Crucial Ballistix 4GB x2) and he told me to try running the computer with 1 stick in, and then try reversing them, i tried this and it seemed to fix my problem. I also had a feeling they might have been over-heating since I had my PC fans blocked. Anyway...

After running for approximately one more week it started acting up again, instead this time I dont get a blue screen, now it just prompts a startup repair screen and would give me a boot error 0x490 but the pc cant automatically fix itself. I'm at a loss. Please let me know any way to fix this. I appreciate it :)

Hello,

You should open up task scheduler:

- click start
- type: task scheduler
- press enter

And see what tasks you have running... Look for taskeng.exe

How do I shutdown autoplay?

The problem with mine is that when I try turn my system on, then the start up repair comes automatically. It says that it is searching for the problem but then it could no longer send, so I click to send this problem to microsoft but nothing happens. I have tried to do a system repair, system image restore, but the same thing happens. I did not want the start up repair to happen it just happened by itself. Please help!

Did you let it run the startup repair ? I would let it run to see if there is an issue, let it fix it, and hopefully your problem will be resolved.

Hello everyone,

I'm trying to create a macro that will run one set of commands if someone changes a drop down menu from YES to NO, and run a different set of commands if the drop down menu is changed back from NO to YES. I've found macros that will run when a cell is changed, but I'm not sure how to write an if statement on the macro, that will run it one way or the other, based on the cells value.

The option defaults to YES. If they change it to NO, I want it to unhide the rows and enable overwriting of the unhidden cells. If they change it back to YES, I want it to automatically hide the rows and put the formulas back in. Here is the file.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Hi

Welcome to the bleeping computer forum

Unfortunately, intermittent issues are one of the difficult fault to troubleshoot. Please follow the below steps to collect some basic info about your system.

1 ) Generate a report about your system using Speccy by reading the guide below.

   http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/323892/publish-a-snapshot-using-speccy/

Post the web link displayed by Speccy in next reply.

2 ) Download and run Minitoolbox from http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/minitoolbox/

Run the tool and only select the following tick boxes.

-List last 10 Event viewer errors
    -List installed programs
    -List devices
-List users, partition and memory size

Now click "Go" and post the output in next reply

After reading your logs, either me or any other forum volunteer will assist to you to diagnose the issue.

Edit:

Don't ever use the registry cleaning function in CCleaner or Glary utilities. Only use them to clean the temp files. Using registry cleaners may cause unpredictable damage to the registry. If anyone properly knows which registry keys are garbage, that is only Microsoft.

Every now and then (every 5 minutes or so) my cursor will turn into the hourglass for a split second, then turn back. I'm assuming this means something is being initiated in the background periodically. Over time, this slows down my computer. At the very least, it makes me lag tremendously in online games for a few seconds (which makes CS and UT2004 pretty much unplayable).

I've tried running the latest AdAware and Spybot: Search and Destroy. Neither solved the problem. These seem like symptoms of generic spyware, but I've still been unable to put an end to it. Can anyone help? Thanks in advance.

(I'm using windows XP, if that makes any difference)

I have a client with a tricked out Dell xps Studio (6GB memory) who is suffering with very long times to print. Even sending a printer test page from within windows (Vista home premium 64) takes about 30 seconds before the sent notice appears on the screen. The printer is a Epson Stylus Photo1900 (large format printer). No other programs running but background stuff kept to a minimum. I have tried shutting down the spooler and printing direct, but it is slow as well.

I loaded and ran Process Explorer from Sysinternals and the only thing out of the ordinary is the constant opening, running and ending of dllhost.exe. This occurs every few seconds and lasts only for a few seconds.

I know there are discussions in posts elsewhere in the forums of the possible impostor DLLHOST.EXE, and when I left the client's I had set MS Security Essentials to run a full scan to see if it would find anything, but I have not yet been to see the results.

Does anyone else have any ideas on this?

Hi,
My computer has been running slow, especially when I do a restart, it takes forever to restart. I went into msconfig and disabled what is in startup. Question is what do I need in startup and what can I get rid of? and how do I remove something from startup?
Also what is a good free firewall to use?
Thanks Dano

A:Computer runs faster when I disable what runs in the background?

Here is a good explanation: http://netsquirrel.com/msconfig/
There are certain (and important) items that should run at Startup.

If you are unsure of some of the entries you see listed, this is a great website to research them: http://www.castlecops.com/StartupList.html
It tells you what the process is, and if it's necessary to run at Startup.

A good firewall (and free one) is Zone Alarm: http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/company/products/znalm/freeDownload.jsp

Not sure whether I'm putting this question in the right spot but here goes. I have a laptop running XP. Today when I tried to boot it up it told me my memory had changed and prompted me to press F1 to continue. I did and it started to boot Windows but then gave me message "One of your discs needs to be checked for consistency." I let it go ahead and it went through a 3 stage process -
1) Verifying files - it said complete
2) Verifying indexes - It corrected an error in Index $SII for file 9
3) Verifying security descriptors - On this last check after a while it started multiple messages of the type " Inserting index entry xxxx with ID yyyy into Index $zzz of file 9." There were hundreds of these messages and it just kept going with consecutively increasing numbers. Eventually I stopped it with the OFF button and then tried to reboot, but the same thing happened. Please help somebody. Should I let it just carry on running or am I likely to be losing my hard drive data as it does this check? Thanks, Dave

I bought this desktop computer about a week ago off of Craigslist. I was running late that day so I didnt get to ask much more than I already stated. When I used it the first week it was slow but tolerable. As the days passed the speed slowed even more to programs not even responding. I also would like to erase all the user information and settings so I can start new with a decent working PC. My knowledge in computer software and program procedures etc. Just let me know if you need more specific information.

A:Windows XP runs slow...if it runs at all!

If you bought that Dell Dimension E510 desktop from Craig's List and it still contains all the programs and "debris" and issues from its previous owner, you need to do a clean reinstall of Windows XP SP3 and get a fresh start with it.

What's the 7-character "service tag" number on one of the stickers?

What's the complete version of Windows XP that's on the Microsoft Certificate-Of-Authenticity sticker that has the product key?

Were you given any discs with that desktop?

I have two external hard drives, both in Vantec NexStar3 USB enclosures. The older 750 GB WDC Green drive runs HOT to the touch, the 4 TB, and the 2 TB before that, run pretty warm but never hot.

Why might this be, and would that much heat cause earlier than necessary drive failure?

A:WDC Green: 750 GB runs Hot, 4 TB runs Cool ???

Hi there,

The WD Green drives should be working up to 60 degrees Celsius, which could feel really hot to the touch. The older model of the drive might be working on higher temperatures that the newer, but should not exceed those 60 degrees. I advise you install some monitoring software to determinate the exact working temperature. If you have the option, check if the drive is running hot when used without the enclosure.
If a drive works hotter than expected, this may be an indicator of an ongoing issue and, yes, might lead to an unexpected drive failure. My advice: measure the exact temperature and do regular backups.
In the links below you will find the spec sheets of the different WD Green models, where you can check temperatures:

i just cant multi task like a used to anymore, plus when i play world of warcraft with nothing else running, it would start at about 60 FPS but when i do some travel, especially into daleran, the FPS would drop to 30, then to 5 or lower, at that point the cpu isnt at 100% but still very high like 80%. after some time FPS may go up to 30 again but may still go back to poor performance again.

heres some specs that i hope would help that i took at a poor performance time

A:JPG? Runs on what?

There are many programs you can use depending on which operating system you have installed. You can use Internet Explorer, Microsoft Photo Editor, Microsoft Picture Viewer, Paintshop.

I have a 2.66 Ghz sytem with 512 dual channel memory running Window XP. My problem is I can use the computer all day long with no problems. When I walk away for an hour or more and come back the computer CPU zone is hot(per the Intel Active monitor software) and the computer acts like it is hot. Extremely slow response, mouse jumps around, and I have to turn it off by holding the button. It restarts fine and cools down quickly and I can use it right away. All the fans seem to be working okay when it is in this mode. I change the power scheme mode and it does not seem to matter. It has me stumped.
Thanks for any help you can provide.

Around two months ago I built myself a low-end gaming/software development PC in order to carry on with a project that was halted abruptly when my laptop died (RIP).
The components are as follows:
CPU: AMD FX4100 4 Core @ 3.60GHZ (Overclocked to 4.1GHZ)
RAM: 4GB DDR3
SSDs: 64GB Sandisk, 128GB Corsair
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 64 Bit
GPU: AMD Radeon 7700 @ 1GHZ (Overclocked to 1.2GHZ)
CPU Cooling: Antec H20 (Liquid Cooling)
PSU: 600W Corsair (cheap one- cost 22)
Case: Small- Micro ATX

When I am playing games such as Crysis, the GPU temperature can shoot up to around 95c, and the CPU can shoot up to 70c. On Team Fortress 2 (less demanding game), GPU idles at around 50c and the CPU idles at around the same temperature.

I know the temperature rise is normal, but should I be concerned? Under any sort of load the PSU always runs warm, but everything else is pretty cool until I run graphically demanding games such as Crysis and Call of Duty: Black Ops.
If I should be concerned about the temperature rise, what sort of action should I take?
I was thinking maybe getting a new PSU would solve the issue, but I do not know if it could also be the case contributing to the high temperatures.

I'm a newby. But I noticed that my CPU runs at 100% only after installing the service pack 1. This seems odd. But I've done 3 total restores, back to factory settings. I never have this problem before the service pack - only after.

A:CPU runs at 100%

Open Resource Monitor and switch to CPU tab. Sort by CPU on Processes and Services, see which one is consuming the CPU. Report back.

I got Ubuntu via wubi, and all was good this was about 4 weeks ago.
2 weeks ago, XP started to run V-E-R-Y S-L-O-W-L-Y, like it would take about 3 mins for all progs to load up from the start menu, after that loaded up
I used to be able to run 6 or 7 applications all at once and not experience any lag, but now i can't run 3 without them becoming 'not responding'.
It has gone way to slow to just be a de-frag prog, and die to the time laps between getting linux, and the slowdown, i assume that its not that (please let it not be that - ubuntu is cool) so i am lead to believe its a virus, or spyware, yet zonealarm (run on XP, as thats what is slow) didnt find a thing.

What would you recommend? Please try and stop short of zapping the linux as its a lot better than winDOZE but if thats a must, then i would rather get rid of the linux than the windoze, as im more used to the windoze.

Please help as this is pissing me off mightily.

It all started when all of a sudden my pc locked up while I was playing WoW. I knew right away it was a hardware issure b/c everything just stopped... No Alt-Tab, no Alt-F4, and no Ctrl-Alt-Del... Mouse wasn't responding, and the HDD light wasn't blinking.

After restarting, I tried booting back up into Windows... got past POST and OS select, but then nothing. So I thought maybe it was a Windows thing. I then restarted and booted up Ubuntu and it worked fine. I installed some updates and checked my email then restarted Windows into safe mode. When that worked I restarted again and booted normally into Windows. Logged in, everythig was going as usual then it suddenly just froze just like last time, nothing would work. I did notice that the CPU temp was about 8 degrees higher than usual, right before it froze. So at that point I opened the case and cleaned a little bit of lint out of the CPU's heat sink, thinking maybe it was overheating.

Still didn't work. Infact, when turned it on this time, I pressed Del to go into my BIOS and it froze. Now I'm really worried.

Now not even the monitor will turn on.

I disconnected all I could and gave it a go, and nothing happens... no beeps no nothing, but everything in the computer is running.

Help!

A:PC runs but nothing happens...

Most likely causes are cpu fan failing, memory module failed, hard drive went belly-up, video graphics card failed, or the monitor itself failed.
Do you have the experience to rule these out one at a time, or do you want some suggestion.
We always like to use a Windows 98 or MS-DOS boot floppy in those computers with a floppy drive. You disconnect the hard drive and boot to a floppy to see if you have any thing on the screen because it may work at low boot resolution.
Do you have a video graphics card in a slot, or do you have onboard video socket?
If you have more than one memory module, you can remove them one at a time. If you get a screen with the other one, you know it may be memory. Alternate modules and try again.

works ok everything on the screen is a little wide the graphics card rating in windows 7 system properties is 1.0 should be a 4.1 and it runs superpi slow 45 sec but downloads transfers files ok could this be i need a later model screen know or what could be the problem

A:hp dv with win 7 still runs

If you haven't reformatted it could just be driver noise.
I would do a clean install after changing something as major as a motherboard, even if the replacement was similar to the original.

How do I fix this problem on Vista

A:CPU runs at 100%

There can be several reasons why the CPU is running at 100%.

We're not there to look at that computer, so you need to provide us with some details.

You can start out by doing the following:

Download and save the

TSG System Information Utility (SysInfo.exe)

After it's been downloaded and saved, double-click it to run it.

Information about your computer will appear.

Return here to your thread, then copy-and-paste the entire text here.

Ok, well I recently moved in with a friend, and he also had a PC, so I bought a Gigabyte PCI Network Adapter to allow me to get onto the net. Well, before I even put the adapter in, I formatted my OS HD, so everything was fresh. Well, the next day is when I got the adapter, and put it into my first PCI slot. Once I did that, I closed up the PC and turned it on. I have blue neon lights and gauges on the front of the PC, they all come on, including all of the case fans and CPU fan, and I can hear the power supply running. So it seems as if everything in the PC is running fine, but my problem is that the monitor doesn't come on, and neither does the sound, keyboard, or mouse. The monitor power is on, because the light comes on, but it blinks as if it was left on and the PC wasn't on, when the PC is on. I tried new monitor cables, and checked all of the wires inside of the PC. I've even gotten as far as removing the network adapter, and taking out the battery off of my motherboard, and resetting the BIOS. Still it continues to do the same thing. I'm currently believing it has something to do with my motherboard, due to plugging the network adapter into the motherboard, which caused something to happen to my video card and onboard sound, mouse, and keyboard. Which happens to be all of which are not working. My hypothesis would have to be either the motherboard or power supply. Well, hope someone can help me to my guiding light, so I can use it again! I have windows Vista and I believe I have malware/virus/spyware. Whenever I try to run any program the computer things for a second then stops. The task manager shows the process as open, but the software never loads. I tired to run Live OneCare but it says the service is stopped. So I tried to open up my services, and of course it completely freezes. Any ideas on where to start?

I can't install any software or uninstall anything unless i'm in safe mode. All software runs in safemode, but once i go back to normal windows i get nothin. I've tried running Trend Micro House call but all it finds is a few tracking cookies.

I've also tried running msconfig, again computer freezes. Uhg.. just getting impatient!!

Hi all

I recently bought that motherboard: http://www.asus.com/product.aspx?P_ID=eCWbkolMf0DOW0IV

and, in the store where I bought it, they installed it in my pc, and they installed the video card in the White PCIe Slot, and after that, with the pc in my house, I found that in the user manual of the mobo:
ASUS VGA SWITCH CARD.

The ASUS VGA switch card allows the Blue PCIe_x16 slot to run at full x16 mode when only one graphics card is installed to the slot.

Installing one graphics card.
When you install only one graphics card, ensure to install the VGA switch card to the PCIe x16_1 slot first and the graphics card on the Blue PCIe x16 slot.

Installing two graphics cards.
When you install two graphics cards, remove the VGA switch card from the PCIe x16_1 slot. The two x16 PCIe slots will boh run at x8 mode.
(According to another page of the manual, the PCIe x16_1 is the White slot)

So I installed that as it says (I removed the video card from the white slot and put it in the blue slot, and put the vga switch card in the blue slot)

By the way, the VGA switch card is like that:

Well, after that, I turned on the pc, and I saw on CPU-Z and GPU-Z that the PCIe was still running at 8x :S, so I searched that on google, and I found that I had to do a clear CMOS.
But, some hours later, I turned on the pc and noticed that for some reason the PCIe was running at 16x, and the next day the PCIe was still running at 16x, so I thought that it was not necessary to do the c... Read more

A:PCI-E runs at x8 instead of x16

Wrong slot

I checked the ASUS manual for your MoBo.

The white (top) slot is the slave (8x). The blue (bottom) slot is 16x.

Damn configuration is backwards.

Just swap slots. Should fix it.

When you use two cards, both run at 8x. Remove the card in the white slot to get 16x.
