Vista: Which version stinks less?

Q: Vista: Which version stinks less?

Okay. I want your opinions. I'm only going to use Vista for making screenshots and doing documentation. I wish I could avoid buying it, but I need it for an ongoing documentation project.

What version of Vista stinks the least?

I've ruled out Home Basic as too basic, and Ultimate as too expensive.

I'm trying to decide between Home Premium and Business.

Preferred Solution: Vista: Which version stinks less?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have an Inspiron 1000. It originally had XP on it, but stupid me wanted the most updated OS so guess what I went and did?? That's right! I put vista on my lappy and now it just plain stinks! A slug moves faster than my laptop does!! How do I remove vista from my laptop and reinstall xp? I have tried reinstalling with cd and it doesn't give me the option to install(appears vista is alot harder to get rid of-kinda like the flu!) Can anyone give me instructions on how to do this? I have backed everything up so I am ready to dump! I am not a tech chick so go easy on me! Thanks a bunch!!!

Is there a difference between the MSDN subscription version of Vista Ultimate and the Retail version that would cause the Virtual Server2005 R2 SP1 installation to fail on a PC upgraded from Home Premium (retail version) to Ultimate (MSDN subscription version)?

I have a Vista x64 Home Premium that came loaded with software from the manufacturer that I would lose if I were to overwrite it by a new installation from my MSDN subscription version of Vista Ultimate.

If I install Vista Ultimate as a brand new installation, Virtual Server installation works fine.

But if I install Virtual Server 2005 R2 SP1 after I upgraded Vista Home Premium to Vista Ultimate, I get the following error at the last phase of the installation: ?Windows Installer has stopped working? and then it sends to Microsoft the attached 3 files.

I even tried Windows Installer 4.5 but it did not work either:

Any idea why the upgraded version fails to install Virtual Server 2005 whereas the brand new installation of the MSDN subscription Vista Ultimate works?

Not sure if I'm writing for help in the correct category. Please let me know if I'm in the wrong place. I would also like to add that I am completely pc illiterate.

I recently lost my web cam connection. I've installed & reinstalled everything several times with no avail. I've even done a system recovery (boy was I was sweating when I did that) Thought that was the end of my pc! My friend is on a Mac notebook and is using aim 4.7 whom I am trying to connect with and I'm on a pc, (windows xp) Our connection (when we were able to connet a while back) was always very lousy but at least we were able to connect somewhat. We are both stay at home moms and we both really miss our web cam connection. I've tried to connect via aol, aim, aim 6.0 and aim pro which all did not work. I've called Labtec (web cam people) and they told me to call aol. I've called aol and they told me to call Labtec.

Any suggestions?

I have an Epson Stylus c80 inkjet printer that has never given me a good color print job. Mostly I always get those vertical bands and lines running through. I know that's probably a common thing, but I've tried every utility to solve it - the head cleaning, nozzle cleaning, etc. Nothing works. This has gone on since the day I brought it home, about 2 yrs ago. I only use Epson cartridges. I've contacted Epson..they just tell me to use Epson cartridges..I tell them I DO!..they just repeat themselves..so no help there.

I researched printers pretty thoroughly and thought I was getting a great printer. Now I don't trust myself! Any recommendations for a printer that does a good, reliable color printing? I've hung in with this disaster as long as I can.

I'm NOT doing any high-quality photo-type printing at all - - I'm just talking about printing quick, small things like jewel case covers, or things I do in Paint, or small pictures from the internet. The color itself is okay, but it's the bands and lines running vertically through them that are always present and I cannot solve. That's what I want to avoid in a new printer.

Got the new FF update last night, what a bummer!!!  Many book marks disappeared, the look and feel has changed much to my dislike.  I wonder if I can revert to the last version?  Is anyone else not happy???

A:New Fire Fox Stinks!

My Firefox v56 updated yesterday to v57. My 'add-ons',the ones that i deem important ie. Ad-blocker & Privacy Badger were still there,so on that count everything was ok.
However, regarding the hoped for increase in broswer speed - it simply hasn't materialised !. It's as slow as v56,which was never that bad that i lost sleep over it.
All my bookmarks are still in place,& the only thing that seems to have changed is the Homepage appearance. All in all,a waste of time - at the moment. I'll await further updates in the hope that eventually Firefox v57 will live up to the months  of 'hype'
I had 'Auto update' turned on & it didn't update on the 14th. I turned auto UD 'off' & then had to turn it back on again for v57 to install, which it did within seconds.
I suppose to give Mozilla the benefit of the doubt - this is a brand new version,'relatively' untried except for the Beta version,so we should expect a few glitches. However, since most of the hype was about 'speed' - i'd have expected that to be there from the first second it went live - it wasn't. Just something else that's been 'improved worse' !!!. (At the moment)

I have been here, done this before, still need some advice.

I am using DirectCD 3.01C, on a PentiumII, 450 Mhz, Gateway PC with 256Mb RAM, and using a HP 9100 CD Burner. My Norton AV is updated weekly, so I know I don't have a virus.

I reformatted about a month ago because of this same problem. [you can look up my past letter on TSG] It was suggested I reformat the C: drive by a PC tech at a computer store after he played with my PC for a couple days, charged me $213, and didn't do a thing for me.

After I reformatted and reinstalled Adaptec DirectCD, I could copy small files and photographs neatly to a CD-RW and I could copy full CDs to CD-Rs with no problems. (I could alway copy full CDs with CloneCd without any problems.) Single file copying worked fine up until about yesterday, then I started getting the same problem ~ Adaptec DirectCD would not recognize an already formatted CD-RW with files on it. If it did recognize it, it would take a very, very long time to try to copy those few little files [10 to 300 kb long] and then it would quit with the standard error [it has become standard to me, I see it so much] "...this CD has an unrecoverable read/write error, you should move all your files off this disk, blah, blah, blah..."

Any suggestions or ideas out there? Am I one of the few [or many] that is beginning to think that this technology or the software is still in it's infancy and is not a really good way to backup or do I need another softw... Read more

I purchased a Toshiba notebook computer in Mexico, where I am presently living. I thought I could change the operating system to U.S. I discovered that I could not do that, so I had my Mexican Tech guys install a new operating system (they did not give me the disks). Windows Vista Home Premium. My computer still thinks it is in Mexico, from time to time, and I can deal with that. However, I cannot get my sound recording settings to work properly. Being out of the U.S., it is very important that I use Skype. I can get it to work, and the next day it is not working. Control panel settings say that everything is functioning properly - drivers are current, etc. Yesterday it was working, today it is not. The speakers are fine. I just can't talk to anyone because they cannot hear me. For several weeks, Skype complained about "noise in the background". Now it is complaining that I do not have an installed recording device. WOULD IT HELP IF I WENT ON LINE AND BOUGHT AND INSTALLED ON LINE ANOTHER COPY OF WINDOWS VISTA? I tried connecting an old headset with microphone, and it did not show the installation of the device, nor did it show up in control panel as an option for me to us. FINALLY, in Sounds, in my control panel, it shows that I have the same recording device TWICE. One is listed as ... (2). Should I remove it? THANK YOU!

Last week i brought my 2.5 yrs old T440 to Lenovo Bugis suppt center to replace a cracked LCD back cover (one fine day i noticed a crack along the righthand side hinge and after opening, the cover was hard to close & open!). I had a queue tkt that said waiting tme approx 5 mins, but it took 20 mins for the front desk asst to call me. He rightly said the warranty had expired and they need to charge me $50 (+gst) to assess how much it would cost to fix it. When i asked what they want to assess as the laptop was working fine, he said in that case i should pay $30 - to source for the broken part and only after that they can tell how much would the total repair cost be! To me, it didn't make sense as they are the 'makers', but the guy started explaining the parts are made by 3rd party suppliers and and that's the process they hv to follow for 'older' models! Then another colleague of him came to explain, but he also couldn't tell me the rational for not able to tell me upfront the charge for replacing a 'highly visible' broken part! They are cheats in my opinion!! I have been a ThinkPad user for nearly 20 years and never experienced such poor quality machines and bad service!!! Hell with Lenovo.

I can't open a installasion, it closes change or remove programs, it closes most of the stuff!! Even it's own settings!!! So I'm asking if I can delete the DEP. Can I?

A:Data Execution Prevention Stinks

First make sure you are installing known good software (not something questionable).

You can disable DEP for the software you are installing by going to System Properties > Advanced tab > Performance settings button > Data Execution Prevention tab > tick the button for Turn on DEP for all programs and services except for those I select. Then Add the program you are having trouble with.

You can also completely disable DEP for all programs by editing the boot.ini file (C:\boot.ini) by changing /NOEXECUTE=OPTIN to /NOEXECUTE=ALWAYSOFF. You must reboot for the change to take effect.

As online gaming grows in popularity ESET researchers found that cybersecurity measures haven't kept pace as 36 percent gamers reported actively turning off security software if they found it was slowing down their computer.

The study, conducted by Google Consumer Surveys, polled 500 gamers and found that 52 percent of respondents said they don't even use security software on their gaming computers, according to a Sept. 13 blog post.

Gamers stated numerous reasons for their lack cybersecurity hygiene with 20 percent saying they don't need it, 13 percent saying they don't like they pop ups, 12 percent saying it slowed down their computers, and eight percent saying that it interrupts their gaming experience.

Researchers warn whenever security settings are disabled, users run the risk of malware stealing their login credentials and using gaming accounts for malicious activity which could lead to the legitimate user getting banned from the gaming platform for someone else's actions.

The stolen accounts could be used for botting, item farming, and other activities without the account owner's knowledge.

Currently running Win2K Pro, and quite happy. I see the end of 2000-compatibility very near. Don't wanna spend the cash on something that's gonna be on it's way out soon (like XP), so I might as well get on board with the next big thing. All of my hardware is DX10 ready, so I wanna get Vista. What's the best version for someone who has always had the "Pro" version of everything.

My home computer is seriously out-dated (2.80 GHz processor, 80GB Hard Drive, CD-RW, and 512 MB RAM). For the past several months I have put off buying a new home computer because of the desire to stay away from Windows Vista. Now, I have nearly convinced myself that in order to be be ready for the future I need to take that next step and just jump into the Windows Vista Experience. I have been shopping computers with a Windows Vista Experience score of 5.1 or better, where the limiting feature is always the GPU. Since my wife and I are not gamers I am very happy with the hardware available to us. On the software side I wonder about two questions: #1, If I settle for Windows Vista Home Premium, will there soon come a time that I will wish that I had started with Windows Vista Ultimate? #2, Should I take that plunge now, and get 64-bit processing, assuming that in a short while all programming will move to this next generation, or will 64-bit software be very slow in becoming wide-spread?

Hi there, a couple years ago I bought a Dell for PC gaming. I realized that wasn't a good idea and decided to build a gaming PC. The Dell came with a Vista Home Premium disk. I have been using Windows XP on my gaming PC.

If I were to ever use Windows Vista again, would I be able to use the copy of Windows Vista that came with my Dell, or can that only be used with Dell PC's? What a bad deal if I can't. Here I paid full price for Windows Vista and get a disc that can only be used with a Dell. I'm glad I'm never going to buy a pre-built PC again. Waste of money.

This Windows Vista Home Premium 32BIT is a reinstallation DVD that says "for Distribution only with a new Dell PC". "This DVD is not for reinstallation of programs or drivers.

Here is a photo of the DVD, except mine is premium as mentioned:

I'll probably just buy Windows 7 in the future or stick with Windows XP.

I'm stuck out in the hinterlands, with only dial up access. My ISP limits connectivity to 4 hours at a time, then forcibly disconnects me - when I can manage to stay connected that long, that is. I have a brand new game I'd like to load, but it requires SP2, and I only have SP1. Download estimate got up to "1 day and 7 hours" before I gave up. I have Vista Home Premium 32 bit. I thought I'd found a contact here....only to discover I couldn't pm him until I'd had three posts here. Yeah, it's been one of those days.

A:I need a cd version of Vista SP2, please!

Do you have any friends, relatives, internet cafes near that have better access than you? That seems like it would be the easiest solution.

Good morning! Long time reader, first time poster.

My friend has asked me to reinstall a copy of Vista to his laptop because he says his was riddled with viruses. It turns out, his hard drive had actually crashed. He went and purchased a new hard drive, but how do I determine which version of Vista he had?

There is a product key on the bottom of the laptop with a Product Key, but the version of Vista has been rubbed off. I know I can only use that key with the correct version of Vista, any way to determine this?

The laptop is a Toshiba Satellite. I don't remember the Model number; I'm at work right now, so I can't get it either.

Any and all help with this issue would be greatly appreciated. Furthermore, if this thread is in the wrong section, please feel free to move it.

A:What version of Vista is it?

If you are using the restoration DVD that came with the computer, it will load without asking.
You will be rolled back to exactly the way it was when you bought the computer.
If you have a regular install DVD, I would call the computer manufacturer and they can tell you, either from their documents or from the key number.

I am corresponding with a person who wants to sell a windows vista home basic DVD.
I have explained that I need a retail version not an OEM or upgrade version.
The seller is not to sure which version it is and has look on the box and DVD but found no reference to an OEM version.

So my question is how can you tell what version a vista DVD is?
Is it on the box or on the DVD?

A:Vista version question

1) The outside packaging says OEM System Builder Pack.
2) If it is installed and activated then Control Panel > System > Activation shows OEM in the product ID.
3) The physical DVD will say "Licensed only for distribution with a new PC". For product support contact the manufacturer of your PC

Even if it is OEM it will install and activate on a home-built PC, but I would ensure the installation disk is formatted. I think you do not get 90 day support with the OEM version (Not 100% sure about that though)

First of all, I apologize if this is an innapropiate post or in the wrong area, but I looked and did not find any rules stating that this is; and I just want to thank you in advance for any help you are willing to give. Here are my system specs:

Penitum D @ 3.00 GHz
2.00 GB of RAM
2 GeForce 7900 GTX's running in SLI
NVida Stipe HDD @ 300GB
Creavtive Lab's X-Fi Sound Card

(It's a Dell XPS 600)

My question is, should I purchase the 32bit edition of Windows Home Primuin, or the 64 bit? From the reading that I have done, it seems like my RAM may not be quite up to snuff. If it makes any difference, I mostly use this machine for gaming (WoW, Command and Conquer 3, Company of Heroes, F.E.A.R., all the leatest and greatest games). Any advice that you would be willing to give me would be greatly appreciated.

A:Wondering which version of vista to use...

Hi JohnQPublic,

It depends. 64-bit can handle more RAM, while 32-bit has more compatible drivers. Check and see if all your devices have 64-bit Vista drivers for them including the BIOS or Motherboard Chipset. If you are a gamer, then I suppose more RAM and a good Video card will be your thing. Check this link out for all the differences on 32 VS 64 bit at Microsoft.

I use the 64bit and I haven't had any problems with it yet. Of course, all my drivers are 64-bit compatible.

Hope this helps,

I recently upgraded to Vista Ultimate. As usual windows saved a copy of the older version - Vista Home Premium. It saved it as $INPLACE.~TR and now I cant remove it. I've tried everything I can think of and I cant delete it. Its occupying 30GB of my hard drive and its driving me crazy!Disk cleanup shuts down every time I run it saying it has encountered a problem and I cant delete the old file because it tells me I dont have permission even when I'm logged on as the administrator. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Ok, a friend of mine recently built a computer- he at first purchased Windows Vista Ultimate 32 bit Version- then decided he wanted the 64 bit version so he bought a new 64 bit version of Vista. I believe they were both OEM version.

My question is, is the first Vista disc he bought useless now? Or can it be used for any reason other than putting vista on a new machine? My sister has XP and was wondering if there was anyway of finagling the disc into an upgrade for her machine?

A:upgrading using OEM Version of Vista

As long as it hs not been installed on another pc, she should be able to use it on hers . . be sure she has enough memory and processor power. . Vista is quite a resource hog.

Doing a upgrade is a recipe for disaster . . she should back up her data and do a clean install of Vista

I have had to replace a hard drive for a friend who has an acer aspire 5536. The oem sticker is underneath as usual but the version of vista has been rubbed off, ie basic, business etc. The product key is still perfectly readable, is it possible to tell what version of vista is installed by product key as acer do not provide recovery media at no cost which i find ridiculous so was just hoinf to instal from disc and download the drivers manually.

A:Vista Version From product key

As far as I know, there is no way to match an MS product key (serial#) with the exact version of a Windows OS. But, you can do it if you have the Product ID. The good news is, most of the new Vista/7 discs contain all the versions of each OS and install the correct version based on the serial # you enter. If you've got a retail DVD, you should be all set.
