Q: Solved: RAM Updrage Question.

Hi everyone,

I run windows home on 2.0GHz and 1gig RAM. Lately, I decided to install another 1gig(to be 2 gigs RAM) to accommodate the current applications that I am using. I stumbled onto a site that is able to scan your system and specify the type and also predict the performance after the upgrade-- www.crucial.com.

Q1: Should I trust the scanner the site provides, and is it accurate "in case anyone has ever tried it"?
Q2: The type of RAM that the scanner found was Crucial DDR2 memory with support for 200pin SODIMM DDR2 PC2-5300or DDR2 PC2-4200 speeds. , I then started bidding at eBay on Samsung 2GB PC2-5300 DDR2-667 200pin SODIMM but I know that the former Samsung RAM is used with MacBook, will that be no good for PC?

I'd also like to know what do these mean and how do they differ SODIMM,PC2-5300,4200 speeds and finally
DDR2-667 or DDR2-533

Thanks you.

I need to know which version of RAM is best peformance, frequency and latency wise that will achieve the best performance possible from the DDR2 family.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I haven't been on windows 98 or 98SE alot so I was wondeing, If you put a Cd-writer (burner) in a computer with windows 98 or 98se (which I just did) why when ;you go to my computer and right click on the E dirve is there not a recording tab and other tabs like in windows xp, I know the answer will probably be------because your not using XP----------But I was wondering. The one I put in had NERO with it and I like NERO anyway however I would like to know for future purposes.

Why when you go to mycomputer and right click on the E drive (the burner) don't you have the recording tab and the rest like XP. I like doing it that way in XP where you can move all files or copy files and then go to the burner and say write these files to cd.

Does windows 98 or 98SE have this and I am just missing it or is a burning program like NERO or another the only way to use the burning in 98 or 98SE?

Thanks for the help

A:Solved: Windows 98 and/or 98SE-question about burning CDs, is there a record tab etc-Question

lol, you answered your own question, windows 95,98,98se,and ME don't support cd burning, except with 3rd party software. When you purchase any of the NT systems (ie: xp, NT 4, Server 2003, 2000 PRO etc...) all have the NT kernel which if you look during your install say " Windows (whatever version) is built on NT technology" and "You now have built in CD burning" soon and perhaps with the upcoming service pack 2, it will start coming with DVD burning capability.

I believe the only windows kernel out that currently supports cd burning is the NT one

I just wanted to know if I could do the following with no problem or if you cannot do it this way.

There is a windows 98 computer upstairs (with DSL) There is a modem--then a router---the windows 98 computer, I think he has the windows 98 computer upstairs hooked into the router and then another line in the router running downstairs to a windows XP SP1 computer. they both work fine. Here is my question.

He wants to add a third computer downstairs,so can it be like
THe modem then router then the windows 98 computer upstairs hooked into the router. Now is it possible to then plug like a four port hub into the router and have the line running downstairs and then take the windows xp that is already down there and plug it into the hub and then the new computer plug it into the hub and they would all have the dsl just like the two of them do now,

I guess I am asking can you plug the one compute upstairs into the router and then run a cable downstairs into a hub and plug the other two computers into the hub and they will all get DSL?

or do you have to plug the upstairs computer into the router like now and then plug two morre lines into the router and run them both downstairs and run one to each computer?

And as long as everything is going throught the router no matter which way it is done do you have to run anything special to get the DSL on all? Some step by step instructions would be nice but I really want to know if the hub thing will work the way I am describing it. Thanks... Read more

Today I changed over my hard drive from a 60 Gig to 80 Gig, Warranty work because the HD was noisy. I used the Maxtor program to copy one drive to the other. Now I can not get into system restore. If I try it just hangs up on that tab. Example: If I try and get to system restore by right clicking my computer is hangs after I hit the restore tab/and if I try through programs/system tools it hangs as soon as I click on system restore. By hanging I mean that that screen stays on the desk top until I reboot the system. (Note at no time is system restore showing in task manager) I'm wondering
1. If the change in HD size has anything to do with this.
2. Is there a manual way of turning off system restore so I can delete and old restore points and start over?

It seems like any SD card greater than 2GB is designated as SDHC. Can these SDHC

Yes, however I must warn you that Windows XP SP2 had problems recognizing some SDHC cards.

If you have SP2 and cannot upgrade, you will need to install the following hotfixes below to add support for the new SDHC memory cards. Otherwise if you are using Windows XP SP3 you are fine because the fixes below are included in its release.

While my main desktop awaits its new mobo....might arrive tomorrow, I have been on my backup Optiplex GX260....being reminded just how fabulous it is. I upgraded it in many ways; it really is lovely system.

Struck me that while its P4, 2.26 CPU is no where near as fast as the one in my temorarily dead newer Opti, & the socket limits upgrades for that.....its ram potential is 2GBs. When I got it I doubled its then existing ram by adding a second 512 stick....so now it has 1GB of DDR.

I went to Crucial....am pasting that link. Was curious about wut their little bargraph would say about improvement in speed should I get this opti two new 1Gb sticks for Xmas. It appears significant and worth doing:

(the faster stick is the one I bought way back...the 2700)

Now, I just came upon this ebay vendor who sells more sticks than U can...(here it comes, U knew it would) shake a stick at. Given that number of transactions, his feedback, while not perfect....is good.

He sells no name sticks for no money, he also sells named ones for only slightly more.

I found this Samsung one....but he lists it as dual channel "ready." I do not know wut that means. Or if it exists. The board in this Opti, unlike my newer one which has DDR2... does not support dual channel:

And offers this two for one shipping as well:http... Read more

I have figured the Creative problem out. Thank you everyone for all your help. Firstly failing power supply cord to drive was causing intermittent power issues and the bios was set for "IDE 1 Slave "NONE", I changed this to "Auto" and now it recognizes like a champ.

On a side note, I am buning audio CD's with my Sony CDrw and CDExtreme software. Supposedly (from the mouths of Sony CSR's) as long as I do a complete Disc to Disc copy of an audio cd (where the tracks are .cda) the Sony should be able to successfully burn (whereas it will not recognize individually selected .cda files). Its not happening.

When the burn succesfully completes the disc looks and plays exactly like the source cd except I get no volume. How can this be? When I open the burned cd v. the source the files are named the same, they're the same size, the song titles show up with track length and the media player shows that each song is playing but no volume. The very first CD I burned over the weekend worked, now I get perfectly burned copies with no sound.

Any suggestions to what might be the problem. I am totally clueless on this. A workaround I've read is to rip the .cda's off the source disc convert to .wav and put on HD then burn from there. Are they kidding. What's the point, I should be able to go direct to direct...Please help!

Dazzl is in the Hizzle.

A:Thank you solved, but a question

Can't help with the software problem except to mention that you can download a demo of nero at http://www.ahead.de Personally I think it is about the best. See if it will burn them properly for you.

I was wondering if you have a Mobo that supports Dual Channel….would performance be better with 2-1 GB sticks in Dual Channel mode or would you get better performance out of 3-1 GB sticks in single channel mode? I was reading online to see if I could find something that might tell me if the dual channel 2GB would be equal or possibly better than 3 GB non dual channel. If you had a 3rd stick laying around rated at the same speed/capacity as the other 2 sticks would it just be better to slap it in there and have the mobo revert to single channel or leave it out? Let me know what you all think.

A:Solved: RAM Question

2x1GB would be much better. with the dual channel, you are doubling your bandwidth for ram, and i don't know of any programs that even uses 3gb of ram (maybe some rendering program but not many).

I want the subdirectories to list in alphabetical order, along with their files

And what I get is the subdirectories scattered in whatever order they please, while the files inside are listed in alphabetical order.

For example...
The contents of folder "Music" are listed before the contents of folder "Books"

In Wired Ethernet, 10BaseT works at 10Mbps and 100BaseT works at 100Mbps. If you have a network configured with 100Base T and introduce one segment at 10BaseT, the entire network is “degraded” to a speed of 10Mbps.
The question:
Will the same thing occur in a wireless network? If you have a 802.11b/g wireless router and an 802.11b/g pcmcia cardin the computer, will the introduction of an 802.11B print server into the network “degrade” the entire network to operate at the slower (11Mbps) speed? Or, will the slower speed just be realized between the print server and the computer and the faster (54Mbps) speed still be available between the router and the computer?

A:Solved: 802.11b/g question

introduce one segment at 10BaseT, the entire network is “degraded”Click to expand...

actually thats not 100% true what you stated means that particular segment is downgraded to 10base-T not the entire network (and anything transferring directly to or from that particular 10base-T segment as it won't get higher than 10base-T)

Will the same thing occur in a wireless network? If you have a 802.11b/g wireless router and an 802.11b/g pcmcia cardin the computer, will the introduction of an 802.11B print server into the network “degrade” the entire network to operate at the slower (11Mbps) speed? Or, will the slower speed just be realized between the print server and the computer and the faster (54Mbps) speed still be available between the router and the computer?Click to expand...

It works like I stated above with ethernet like I stated above if you are using a wireless router with a mixed mode setting the b should be between your router and your print server and the g should be between your router and your laptop.

Hello Everyone!
Okay this is my problem I have been having for the last couple of days.

I am using a 9200 Dell Inspiron Laptop. The SOUND has just stopped out of the blue. 3 nights ago I was listing to some MP3s right up to bed time. I was not pushing the speakers or anything and it sounded like it always does, no cut outs or anything.
The next morning I loaded up the computer and bing, no sound. I have ran chkdsk several times in the cmd promt and each time it found new errors so I kept following up with chkdsk/f until no more errors were found.
I have checked every thing that I can think of as far as <b>I</b> know that would be related to the Audio.
The Volume NOT muted. I have checked the Audio device in Hardware Devices and Everything is running properly. I have went into msconfig and checked the box to load up all <i>services, programs, & drivers</I> and that is not the issue either. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the sound drivers, downloaded new drivers and installed them but that hasn’t brought back Sound either. One time when I started up the PC I heard a <I>partial</I> windows sound right as windows booted up and that was it. Do you think my speakers are dead? WTF. I am out of suggestions.
I have not tried the headphones port, I suppose I should.
Any help with this IS greatly appreciated!

I recently ordered two new sticks of RAM since one had become faulty and was causing my computer problems. My question has to do with the installation and the pairing. I want the two new sticks that I ordered to go together as "pairs" since they have the same exact specs. I want the original RAM module to be by itself. The installation went fine and my computer recognizes all three of them BUT i'm not sure if I have the pairs set up correct. On the motherboard you have an area where two spaces for the modules are right next to each other, and then there's another area for 2 more spaces ( so obviously you get 4) BUT the spaces that are next to each other are numbered 1,3 then 2,4. Also the colors are different on the clips that hold it in place. The 1 matches the 2 and the 3 matches the 4. So using common sense I matched up the two new RAM sticks under the 1 and 2, even though they aren't next to each other. And i put the other stick in the 3 spot. Is this correct? Are the two new RAM sticks paired up correctly?

In our local paper there was a story about a man and his wife who went through hell when a hacker had stored illegal images on his computer without him knowing. It wound up costing him his job and lost everything with legal fees of $250,000. The reason for the story was that he was arrested and later proved by his legal team that he had no knowledge of those images being there and they proved it was a hacker. The article also stated it wasn't uncommon for them to slip stuff on others computer without their knowledge then access it.

I'm having a bit of trouble on my PC in the last 24 hours. I recently bought a Samsung PC2100(266MHz) DDR 1G for my PC. I already had a Kingston PC3200(400MHz) 1G DDR in my PC because it was compatible with PC2100, as well as the PC2700. Yesterday, I added the Samsung PC2100 to my PC alongside the Kingston PC3200. First few hours was fine; the PC was considerably faster and ran great. Then after a while my computer started slowing down at point and then going back to normal speed (or even the speed I had it with with just 1GB of RAM). Then my computer completely stopped and I had to reboot it manually. After that I had to reboot it one more time because some of the programs were not responding or not turning up at all. There was also considerable slowness.

I wanted my Computer to run faster, and that is why I bought more RAM so I can have 2GB of it, but it seems to have no effect, or has even worsened the speed (at times). Should I return the Samsung PC2100 and get another Kingston PC3200 or is there something I could do?

Just a black screen then it disappeared and nothing. Just figured I would try and be ahead of the game if it was a virus or something. thanks for your help.

I'm currently fooling around with an FTP client program. Specifically: FlashFXP ver# 3.20 build 1080 Final.
My question is: How SAFE are these types of programs? I mean if I decide to share certain\selected files with someone, is it possible for a person with knowledge to access my WHOLE computer?
These FTP programs are VERY new to me and granting access is VERY scary. Thanks Dave
