Windows Audio Service will not start, error 1067

Q: Windows Audio Service will not start, error 1067

Hello! This is my first time asking for help; thank you for your time.

I have an Asus N550JV laptop with windows 8. It has been working great the last year, but after a recent windows update, my audio completely stopped working. After running the troubleshooter, it stated the following:

One or more audio service isn't running
Not fixed

Both the Windows Audio and the Windows Audio End Point Builder services must be running for audio to work correctly. Atleast one of these services isn't running.

After doing some research, I was able to view the local services running on my laptop. I found that Windows Audio Endpoint Builder is running, but Windows Audio is not. When trying to start Windows Audio, I got the following messgae:

Windows could not start the Windows Audio service on Local Computer.
Error 1067: The process terminated unexpectedly.

How do I get my audio back? I have Online Lectures I need to watch for school, so any help would be great! Thank you for your time

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Do you have a System Restore point that is BEFORE the last update?

Sadly, you may have to do a reinstall or if you have a backup a restore from the backup. My Windows 8.1 was corrupted by the last update (my suspicion). Fortunately I had a recent full backup and restored from the backup.

I have recently installed Windows 7 on my new computer. My sound drivers are all up to date, and the Device Manager knows they are there and working. However, the Volume Adjuster has the speaker with the red and white cross, and when the audio troubleshooter pops up, it does nothing to fix the problem, just acknowledges that there is one...

So, I looked up solutions, and was told to enable the Windows Audio service. I tried, and got a 1067 Error (Unexpectedly terminated). I have started, and successfully run, all of the dependencies, yet Windows Audio still won't run. I ran the 'sfc /scannow' as I was told that might work, but no luck. I also uninstalled and reinstalled my audio driver numerous amounts of times, still no luck. I'm running out of options, so I came here.

Please, any help would be appreciated.

WLAN AutoConfig service gives error 1067 when trying to start it.

What I've tried:

Reset winsock settings
Ran SFC /scannow
Did system restore
Uninstalled and reinstalled drivers

I tried all of these in normal mode AND in safe mode. None of it worked.

Then i thought the service dll (C:\Windows\system32\wlansvc.dll) itself might have been damaged/outdated, so I decided to delete it and put a new one from donor pc. NOPE.
It wouldn't give me access to the file. No matter what i tried, safe mode, unlocker tools, auto rename it on startup, doing everything in administrator or even messing with permissions under file properties. It just wouldn't give me access to the file.

Wi-Fi was working smoothly few days ago and i literally have no idea why it stopped working.

Specs:

Windows 7 Professional 32-bit
Sony VAIO VGN-SZ340P

Any idea how to fix it? Thanks in advance

I have a small windows 7 laptop used only by one person for their email. In the last few days, updates stopped working. Currently, the Windows update service is stopped and will not start. It tries, but returns an error 1067.

I have tried a number of KB fixes. The Eventvwr shows error x080080005 regarding the Update Server "Server execution failed." Nothing much else.

SFC /SCANNOW reports no problems at all.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058 outlines steps to potentially solve the problem, but has not solved it.

Antivirus from MSE, MalwareBytes and Kaspersky have found no problems, although MSE is now a few days out of date, as I cannot update it due to this problem.

I looked for any recently installed programs that might be badly behaving, but nothing has been installed within the last 30 days. I did choose to uninstall some much older programs of questionable value (odd brand PDF print tools).

The computer had a problem where it thought software was "currently being installed", when in fact none was, but the use of http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301 seems to allow forcing me to deletions and actually fixed the Programs and Features component to allow uninstalling software just fine. However, the Windows Update from the control panel or from the Action Center still does not work because the update service will not start (as stated at the top of this post).

hi. I am not sure what happened to my computer. I was surfing the net, then tried to watch a movie and all of a sudden there was no sound. I tried to listed to a song in iTunes and had an error that there is a problem with my computer's audio/video settings configuration and the playback may not work properly.

when I go to settings/admin tools/services and try to start windows audio - I get the error "Could not start the windows audio service on local computer. Error 1067: The process terminated unexpectedly". Plug and play is started and seems to work. I get the same error for a few other services, eg, restore backup.
I tried to do a restore backup, but I get that restore backup is not able to protect my computer and I must restart.

Hi.
I am running Windows XP Home SP3 on a Lenovo SL500.
The laptop suddenly stopped connecting to the internet (stuck on acquiring network address). Then suddenly sound stopped working (even though I have the correct drivers installed).
I have tried the following:
1) going to the previous working version - no luck
2) I went to services.msc and found the DHCP client won't start. When I try to force start it, it gives me error 1067. ipconfig gives an error saying "an internal error has occurred. the system cannot find the file specified". I have no idea what file this is. Also, in services.msc when I restart windows audio to get sound back, it starts and then stops again. I also noticed other services like Wireless Zero that should be running are stopped. When I turn them on, they stay on for a short while before stopping automatically.
3) I ran winsockxpfix.exe, sfc.exe /scannow - no luck
4) I did a registry clean - no luck
5) I did a repair install of Windows again and still no luck.
Does anyone have any clue what's wrong and how I can fix this? I don't want to have to format and do a fresh install if possible.
Thank You.

Hi, I have an issue with ATA 1.7.

I have deployed ATA in my lab environment (VMware ESXi) but the ATA GATEWAY service keeps on Starting. When I manually tried to restart, it showed an error:

Windows could not start the Microsoft Advanced Threat Analytics Gateway service on Local Computer.Error 1067: The Process terminated unexpectedly.

Then, I tried to deployed my lab in my laptop (2 VMs / VMWARE Workstation) and ATA works fine. These same VMs don't work on ESX, the network configuration is good but error 1067 again

Is there some special prerequisites/configuration on ESX ?

I purchased a Netgear Push2TV PTV3000, and updated the firmware, downloaded the latest Intel WiDi, and tried to connect. The search for WiDi adapters found the PTV3000, so I double-clicked to install it. Add a Device ran, but could not find the PTV3000.
Searching the Web I found I needed to insure WiDiApp and Wireless PAN DHCP Server were allowed through the firewall. I found that the WiDiApp was listed in, and allowed through the firewall. I could not find any mention of Wireless PAN DHCP Server in the firewall.
I found the entry in Services, and it was listed as Manual. I set it to Automatic and tried to Start the service. I received an Error 1067: The process terminated unexpectedly.  I am running Windows 8 on a Sony SVS15118FXB.
As a possibly associated issue, since I believe Bluetooth also uses the Wireless PAN DHCP Server, I cannot get Bluetooth to function on the same computer. Attempts to connect Sony Bluetooth speakers also fail.  Maybe the same issue?
Any help would be most appreciated...

Hi,

Over the past week or so I've had a few problems with my Windows 7 Dell Inspiron 1570. I'm not sure what happened to start it all off. The first thing I noticed was that I could no longer get sound from the computer - the speaker icon is no longer visible, and when I try to access 'Sound' in Control Panel, either nothing happens or I receive a message which says 'Windows Audio Service is not running'.

I have tried to restart the Audio Service in services.mcs, but to no avail. I also noticed here that the Plug and Play Service is stopped, and it won't start either. The green bar shoots up to about halfway and then stalls, before I receive an 'Error 1053' message.

In addition to this, my laptop has stopped recognising external devices - printer, usb storage etc, and the Device Manager is empty.

I'm tearing my hair out trying to figure out what's going on, and could really use some help from someone who knows what they're doing. As you may have gathered from my clumsy description of my issues, I'm not exactly a technical wizard!!

Any help will be hugely appreciated!

Thanks

Brian

Hi all,

I am having problems getting sound to play on my speakers and I can't for the life of me figure out why. Some background:

I had to do a clean re-install of of Windows XP on a Sony VIAO desktop PC. Everything seemed to be working fine, including the sound. But after installing some updates including Service Pack 3, the sound just stopped working. I have tried uninstalling and re-installing the drivers without success. The device manager shows that the sound controllers are fine(see attached for devicemanager.gif)

Now I have tried looking at the related service(s) and was unable to start the Windows Audio Service. The error I get is "Error 1067: The process terminated unexpectedly."(see attached screen shot - servicerr.gif)

By the way, the service is set to start automatically but something seems to be causing it to fail. I checked on event viewer and there are a bunch of services that fail to start automatically on booting, including Windows Audio service. The error showing up is: "The Windows Audio service hung on starting." See attached screen shot - eventviewer.gif . One other thing I noticed is that the Windows XP takes quite a bit of time to login after I enter my username and password on booting. But after that it is smooth sailing except for the sound.

I also did a complete uninstall of all Norton antivirus/spyware software after reading that that could be the source of the issue. Didn't help.

Ok first off -------->

This one has me stumped.

I have here a Windows 7 pc,
Everything was going well, untill a game I like to play wasn't loading after patch. No the reason for the post, just were this all started. I noticed that svchost was running 90+ percent of my cpu. So I ran Malwarebyts , It pulled four malicious files. ( I just checked, I guess Malwarebyts decided that logs are not important, Logging is on, but there are no logs there)

After-which, I restarted the machine. When It booted, low and behold, no audio.
I looked around a bit and found that the Windows Audio service is not starting. Trying to start it throws this error.
"Window could not start the Windows Audio service on Local Computer.

Error 1068: The dependency service or group failed to start"

I checked the dependencies, and they are all on.

At this point I decided to try to troubleshoot.
I went into the registry, and removed the dependencies form the service. ( I backed up the key.)
Restated the machine, and tryed to start the service. This is when thing got odd. This time it threw a different error.

"Window could not start the Windows Audio service on Local Computer.

Error 1722: The RPC server is unavailable."

What?

I uninstalled my audio device and restarted, it reloaded and it throws the same error. I also ran sfc /scannow and it returned no integrity violations.

I have read and tried all the solutions that i can find on this issue. I have contacted Microsoft for a possible solution but they want to charge me and i know there is a free fix. So my hope is that someone out there knows what it is.
The issue i am having is i currently have an icon in my system tray that is a speaker with a red X. When i hover over it the tag says "The Audio Service is not running". I have gone into Services and discovered that it is my Windows Audio Service that is not running. I have tried to start it manually and it returns an error code 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion. This error is returned within 2 seconds of attempting to start.
The little bit of info i could get from the technician at Microsoft is that it could be a malware corrupting my .dll files. I downloaded Malware bytes and run it. i removed the possible threats that it came back with. I have run a full virus scan using Kaspersky Pure 3.0 and have no viruses. Also i downloaded the latest .Net framework and its updates. I have all current drivers so that is not an issue. I have no idea what else to do. Please help.....

i'm using a p5b deluxe motherboard with on-board sound.

my sound was working when i installed se7en, but i had the speakers in the wrong port. fixed that.

the very next reboot, i get a red x over the speaker icon in the system tray. when you mouse over it, it tells you that "the Audio Service is not running." when you left click on it, it tries to fix the problem by starting Windows Audio service. it can't. i'm not suprised. if you right-click on the icon and choose a device to look at, the sound window comes up from the control panel. under both playback and recording, there are no devices shown. instead it says "No audio devices are installed".

now, i think this is the biggest clue: when you go into services, Windows Audio's status is blank, and, strangely, the Startup Type is set to Automatic. all three other dependant services are turned on ( Windows Audio Endpoint Builder, Plug and Play, and, i'm pretty sure, RPC Endpoint Mapper ).

This problem has started in recent weeks (yes, too far back to do System Restore):

When I reboot, if I click on the speaker icon in the Notification Area, it tells me that Windows Audio is not running (and so no media app will produce any sound). However, if I then raise or lower the volume via my multimedia keyboard, Windows Audio starts running.

This is despite the fact that in Services, the Startup Type of Windows Audio is Automatic. So why doesn't it start on reboot?

A:Cortana disables Windows Audio Service, Wireless Adapter, & Start Menu

Hi, never seen this reported; I gather this is a new laptop, with nothing installed.

Assuming you have not configured settings in some strange manner or been infected, there's little to go on.

Your first port of call is definitely your supplier. (Mine is good- technically quick and competent- they did a remote session recently to discover what they believed could be achieved could no longer on this model!).

Given it's a brand new configuration, you could try completely formatting your disk and reinstalling Windows, but I would not do that before contacting your supplier.

You may also have a recovery partition which allows you to reset it to ex-factory condition.

I have a Samsung R509 Laptop.

Recently the Windows Audio service has stopped running and when clicking the audio icon a troubleshooting window just opens which says it cannot fix the problem.

I have tried several fixes such as the MSISERVER cmd fix, all to not avail.

When I go in to services and try and run either Windows Audio or Windows Audio End Point I get this error.

Hello alexfer and welcome to Seven Forums. Sorry you're having these issues.

You might want to read through this Microsoft article and follow the suggetions given.

No sound in Windows

Microsoft also has another article, "Tips for fixing common sound problems". There's a Fix it" button but use caution before using it. The article was originally prepared for Vista and should work for Windows 7 but I'd create a System Restore point just in case.

Some other things that could affect your audio include which antivirus you're using, any recent Windows Updates, and malware. You could also try running a full scan with Free Malwarebytes. It picks up things other products miss. Update the database before running.

I recently installed Windows 8 Developer Preview, and everything is working smoothly except for one thing - there is no sound. There's a small icon in the lower right corner of the taskbar telling me that "The Audio Device is not running."
I tried starting it using services.msc, but when I try to, it gives me error 1297: "A privilege that the service requires to function properly does not exist in the service account configuration."
Can someone please help me? I have no idea what's going on.

A while ago, my PC was having some lag issues that made the computer practically unusable. I found out in msconfig that I had almost all services running. I disabled many of the services, and I made sure not disable the necessary ones (i.e, Windows Audio.) I restarted my computer and there was a red circle with a white "X" over the audio icon. I clicked on the icon. A window named "Playing Audio" opened. On the window was a bar similar to the one shown while loading/downloading something. Above the bar said "Detecting Problems" and then "Scanning for hardware changes...". This went on for about 10 seconds. After this, the window changed. At the top in blue was "Troubleshooting has completed". Under that was "The troubleshooter made some changes to your system. Try attempting the task you were trying to do before." In the center of the window was "Problems found-Hardware changes might not have been detected".

The first thought, have you tried reinstalling the Sound Drivers? either from the motherboard vendor or if you have RealTek you can get the latest from RealTek and install that.

heres a run down from my last post:

i have no audio. if i click troubleshoot problems it says the audio service is not running
it says the windows audio and endpoint builder arent working
if i go into services, windows audio is set to automatic but its not on, when i click start it says "error:1075 the dependency service does not exist or has been marked for deletion"

From your description there are many more problems than just the windows audio error.

I would suspect an Operating System problem. If you can find a friend to download the Windows 7 Home Premium ISO and burn it to a DVD, that would give you the needed disc to try and repair Windows. Although your DVD drive does not work in Windows, it should work for booting.

Last night there was a power failure (lightning strike) while I was running Windows Update. Today when I run Windows Update I get Error 80246008, and I am unable to start the Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS), which gives service-specific error code -2147024713.

What I have done so far to try to solve the problem:

1. Run sfc /scannow, which reports no errors.

2. Deleted the contents of the C:\ProgramData\Application Data\Microsoft\Network\Downloader folder.

3. Run Microsoft Fix It 50202 in Aggressive mode, which is supposed to solve this problem. It reports that it is unable to start the BITS service.

I'm about out of ideas, so some help would be appreciated.

A:Windows Update error; cannot start BITS service

I solved the problem. First, I did a system restore from the last restore point prior to the power failure. But that wasn't the only thing necessary. I then ran Microsoft Fix it 50123, which apparently recreated the damaged files in the C:\ProgramData\Application Data\Microsoft\Network\Downloader folder and successfully started the BITS service. And that seemed to take care of it; Windows Update ran without error. The only trouble with these Fix its and wizards is that you don't entirely know what they do.

Hello,

I would be so grateful if anyone could help me with a problem with my laptop.  Everything was working fine until I booted up yesterday morning and it took absolutely ages - at least 10 minutes.  On finally booting up, the desktop icons had turned huge and the laptop was generally very slow.

I ran chkdsk and since then the laptop now boots up and the icons are correctly sized, but I get a message in the system tray saying 'unable to to connect to windows service' and it still takes ages to boot up.  The design of windows has also changed to a basic version.

In addition to running chkdsk I have performed scans with superantispyware and malware bytes, no issues, just tracking cookies which I deleted.

Could anyone please help?  I use my laptop for work (I am self employed) so could do with sorting this out asap.  I don't have a huge amount of files, so while I'd prefer not to do a complete re-install, this is an option if needs be.

My laptop is a sony vaio running windows 7 64 bit, 4 GB, Intel core i3 CPU.  My knowledge is fairly basic so if any further info is required please let me know and I will provide it.

Thanks an advance for any help

I am having problems with my computer. I cannot seem to update anything. I am running Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit. I first noticed that Adobe, Java, and Microsoft Security Essentials would no longer update. I have not tried to use Microsoft Update, but I am certain that would fail as well, which is why I have not even bothered. Every time I tried to update one of those programs, I would get an error saying that the server was unavailable and to please check my internet connection, or it could not update due to an internet or network connectivity issue. However, Malwarebytes Anti malware will update the definitions just fine, for some reason. Microsoft Security Essentials shows the most recent definitions as Jan 4, 2014, so it would seem the problem happened around that time. Running a manual update of MSE definitions gives me an error of 0x80080005. Well, the browser was showing web pages just fine, so after some googling and searching around, I realized that the "Windows Update" service and the "Background Intelligent Transfer Service" were not running. Attempting to restart the computer and manually "start" either of these services would bring up an error message. Trying to manually start Windows Update service gives the error 0x8007277a. I tried to use Microsoft's "Fix-It" solution which also immediately gave me an error saying that the computer failed to connect to all of the servers required to run it, thus it failed. I... Hi, Welcome to forums.

This could be an issue with third party winsock. You can reset winsock. Here's how you can do it.

1.Click the Windows Start button.

2. Type Cmd in the Start Search text box and press Ctrl-Shift-Enter (keyboard shortcut to run Command Prompt as Administrator). Click Continue to allow elevation request.

3. Type netsh winsock reset in the Command Prompt shell, and then press the Enter key.

4. Type netsh int ipv4 reset in the Command Prompt shell, and then press the Enter key.

5. If you use ipv6, type netsh int ipv6 reset in the Command Prompt shell, and then press the Enter key.

Note: you may need to run Network Diagnostics afterwards to "repair" your connection after this.

Hello everybody. I have a difficult but interesting problem. A few days ago after a system crash I lost all sound, the volume control was gone and error saying no mixer is preset would appear every time I tryed to play a sound. Onboard sound is turned on in BIOS, in device manager it displayed as woking properly. I reinstaled the drivers, and uninstalled the onboard sound from hardware manager, and manualy reinstalled it, none of it did anything. In control panel> Sounds and Audio devices is sais " no audio device", but in Winamp or Ventrilo I went into the options and is output device it was set to some defalt generic item, I changed it back to my onboard sound and now winamp play mp3s just fine, as well as ventrillo.
So this is not a driver or hardware problem, this is a windows problem.

I have researched it quite a bit and found a few poeple with exactly the same problem. It apears that Windows Audio service is dissplayed as "stopped" even tho it's set to Automatic. Alot of people were able to solve their problem by simply clicking the start service button and it all worked fine onse again. How ever few (I'm one of these guys) the service would not start, instead we get this error

Double click on the Print Spooler service to open its Properties. On the Dependencies tab see upon what it depends, and trace back to see if the cause/fix can be determined. Caveat: no guarantee this will work any better than your command attempt.

Most third party security AV/AS software will disable Windows security software in favor of their own. This is normal. Using more than one anti-virus security program at one time is not recommended. They can interfere with each other giving you gaps in coverage, cause conflicts that lead to system crashes, and tend to slow your system down by using excessive resources. Pick one that you like and stick with it.
