[SOLVED] Word document freezes computer and document is corrupted

Q: [SOLVED] Word document freezes computer and document is corrupted

Hi all.

The other day whilst in the throws of fixing another unrelated problem I came across a strange and annoying Word Document problem.

When I bought this word document up it present a very unusual icon. It was grayed out and part of the title contained a ~$ then the name of the document.

When I tried to open it, the word document only opened up to the gray page just before it should turn white displaying the text, and there it froze.

Nothing worked after that! The freeze was so bad that the only way to close the window was to turn the computer off at the tower.

After rebooting I tried it again 2 more times with the same problem freeze occurring in the Word document.

Today I again found another document that caused the same problem, this time the icon for that document was normal but right beside this icon was another malformed grayed out ~$(name) icon.

When I tried to open either of the 2 icons I got the same freezing up problem, just as before.

I tried a previously suggested step in that I opened "Word" and from there navigated to where the bad files were located.

In turn I only hi-lighted each, and at the bottom of that window clicked on the arrow for the drop down box.

I was advised that one of the presented options was to repair the file. No such option was present.

So there you have it. Any advice on this problem please?

Regards

Preferred Solution: [SOLVED] Word document freezes computer and document is corrupted

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi all.

Just to advise that I am going to mark this topic as Solved......to a fashion so to speak.
I may resurrect it at a later stage if the problem re-presents it's self.

In a nut shell. I spent a lot of time today searching sites and performing tests including searches on my computer program.

I ascertained that all the aforementioned "defective " Word documents originated in the same folder. After performing several search functions with the criteria as ~$.doc no other such files were found on my computer, other that the already mentioned.

All tests suggested would not repair the said documents.

I have now deleted the offenders and I will monitor the situation. If I run into problems again I will re-post.

Thanks anyway.

When saving a Word 2007 document as a webpage (htm, html), an extra folder is automatically created besides the hmtl document itself. This folder contains background information like pictures, wallpaper etc. Is there a way to prevent that folder from being created in the first place? I've got Word 2000 on another computer, and when I save my word documents as html files over there, that extra folder is not generated. The only time that folder is created in 2000 is if my documents contain pictures, wallpaper etc. In Word 2007, it is created all the time, even though my documents are just plain text.

A:Solved: Word 2007, saving document as html document: how to get rid of extra folder?

Managed to find the solution, it was very simple after all. One has to save the document as a filtered webpage and click "yes" when a box pops up warning you that you will use certain featuers which are specific to Office2007, such as the background. Then the document will save without that extra folder and files.

I'm using Windows Xp on a network with Microsoft Word 2002.

I have one document of about 48 pages. Whenever I want to copy paste within this document or from this document to another document, Word freezes. It does not give an error message.

When I email it to someone else, they can open it and copy paste just fine. If they modify it, save it, and send it back to me, I still can't copy paste form it.

The IT guy reinstalled word, reformmatted my computer. no luck.

I went into the registry and deleted the Data files , as was recommended on another website, no luck.

I couldn't find my normal.dot file, so I didn't do anything with that.

EDIT***
Let me just clarify something - I can copy paste just fine from all other documents.

While copy paste seems to be the fastest and most reliable way to make Word freeze (it happens everytime), A few other things have also caused a crash. The only specific one I can remember at the moment is CTRL-Z
***

I would greatly appreciate any suggestions!

Thank you!

Does anyone have a solution to this?. An important wordpad document have been damaged by too many saves, about half the text is gone and replaced with these characters \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ .

I had the same problem with a .doc document a year ago and found a simple solution on a forum, i could fix it in the word program, but i cannot remember what i did to fix it = /.

I have tried to highlight all the text and change the text to Arial, etc. I have also tried to copy the text and open the document in other programs without success.

I recently used Easeus data recovery pro to recover a book this guy was writing. He was using microsoft works to write his book. Upon trying to burn it to cd it suddenly dissapeared on him. I was able to bring the raw file back but they came back as word documents, (.doc) and not .wps extension that he was used to. Now it comes up when opening in word and in works, all jargon, stating this program could not be run in DOS mode, and wants me to select which encoding. My question is, are the files in any way repairable; being as they were corrupted during his attempt in burning them to disc and just simply disapeared. I have been at this for days and hate to keep spinning my wheels if this task is impossible.

I have two questions regarding documents created in Word 2007...

1) Can links be created within a Word document? For example, can I click on and item my table of contents and have the document jump to that particular section of the document?

2) Also, is there a way to make sections of the document hidden until the user clicks a specific word or graphic in the document?

I'd like to specify a particular instruction and include a "Show example" link that would make a detailed example appear for those who needed the extra help.

Thanks everyone!

A:Word 2007 - Links within a document? Hide/Show sections of a document?

If you created table of contents through References - Table of Contents, you can hold Ctrl and click on the item in that table, word will take you there. This feature is standard.

Also, to navigate inside document you can use bookmark option.
Insert bookmarks. Word 2010 Bookmarks
Then insert Hyperlink - in the window select second tab "Place in This Document" and choose your bookmark.

As for hiding parts of document, I do not think that is possible.
You can create that in HTML document with javascript, but not in Word document.

I am running XP and Word 2000 and Nortons. Word will crash if you leave the document open for a while (there is no specific time frame) and then select close (icon). The error - Microsoft Word for Windows has encountered a problem and needs to close. The details are: AppName: winword.exe
appver 9.0.0.3822
Modname: kernel32.dll
modvers: 5.1.26002180
offset 0001eb33

This has pretty much happened since I got this laptop. I have reformatted and reinstalled everything (due to another problem) and still have the same problem with word. I have used the same CD on other computers to install word and they do not have the same problem.

I use a variety of templates and plain documents in my work and can not pin point it to one template.

If you leave Word open with a document (no matter what size) and come back to it later this is when the problem happens. I started to get around it my saving first then closing, but this no longer works. The save completes and then I select Close and this is when it happens - you get the dreaded pause and then you hear the whirl of the computer and then you get the Microsoft Word for Windows has encountered a problem and needs to close. Firstly I could put up with it but is now just a nusiance.

This might be kind of tricky.

We're trying to streamline our RFQ-to-Quote process, which currently utilizes a combination of digital forms and hand-written forms passed among several departments. My boss asked me to modify the RFQ form to save him some typing (because he has to retype all the information in the final Quote), and I--not understanding the complexity of the process--very stupidly told him that it could be done fairly simply using form fields and bookmarks. He's been kind enough to grant me a lot of leniency because for him anything would be better than the current situation, so as long as I can improve on what we use now, he'll be happy.

I thought about creating form templates for each of the departments, then as the original RFQ circulated from one department to the next subsequent forms would be appended to it to create a rolling document. I'm not too happy with the that idea; there's all sorts of room for user error. I thought about creating a single document template containing every department's form, but a) I don't want any single department to be able to modify information gathered during another department's process, and b) certain departments must generate a variable number of copies of their form.

I told my boss the best way to accomplish a secure and low-maintenance RFQ-to-Quote would be to create a stand-alone Quote Generator application, but we both agree the effort is not condusive to the timeframe by whic... Read more

Hi,

I work at a small non-profit and we have updated two computers with new computers running Windows 7. We use MS Word 2003. I have checked all threads on forum related to this issue, but nothing seems to correct our problem. I would be grateful for any help.

Description of issue: With a Word document open, one should be able to click "File" > "Send To" > Mail Recipient As Attachment", or any of the other mail options, and have the email composition window of Thunderbird pop up. What happens is that Word is attempting to send the attachment via Windows Live Mail. The computer basically freezes. If you try and abort or get out of Word, and error pops up stating you can't close Word until the email has been sent. Finally, you have to force a shut down of the computer.

Internet Explorer shows Thunderbird as default email client. I have check all of the other obvious places for setting the default email client, but I can't seem to find a conflict anywhere on the computer showing Windows Live Email as default client.

As a side note, this employee was using Outlook Express as their email client prior to the computer upgrade and all setting were imported into Windows Live Mail, which was initially used. The employee did not like Windows Live Mail, so I installed Thunderbird. It is used as the default email client and the only issue has been with Word. Additionally, I know that the document could be sent from Windows Explorer by right-cli... Read more

Hello,

I have turned off the option where Endnote loads up everytime I go into word.

There are no graphics in the document and I am using windows 98 O/S.

Can anyone please offer some advice as to why this would be happening.

Thank you.

Sounds like it's corrupt or just about.

Do you have Word XP available to you anywhere? It's "recovery" is better than prior versions, and it just might clear up the problem.

If I set her default font to Times New Roman it will stay for creating new documents from within Word. If she goes the other route mentioned above to create a new document it will always default to Courier. Also when she tries to save the document with the Save As item it defaults to txt instead of a .doc file. I am thinking there are two different templates for these two seperate ways of opening or creating a document.

So without getting too off topic, and I hope you guys don't think I'm just trying to post creepypasta or anything but I'd like to know if this is something that has ever happened to your computers before? I'm not a paranormal believing kind of guy or anything, and I'm hoping that there is a logical reason for the following happening based on the programming.

So my girlfriend thinks her house is haunted or something and she was having nightmares about killing her family last night, and when she woke up she experienced sleep paralysis and saw shadows moving around. Anyway, today we were discussing it on skype because she really believes this stuff, and alledgedly, according to her, her computer started acting weird and then shut off and turned back on without her touching it. But she said before it shut off, a text document - not an alert pop up - said "sorry...stop". Now, I don't really care for ghost stories or any crap like that, but I just think that it is strange that a word document had popped up instead of an alert, and that it had that text. Is that a protocol for any process on windows 7? Because I think that's quite odd.

A:Word document popped up, and then computer shut off

Before I would believe in a haunted computer I would believe she has be hacked. Sounds like some one has gotten in and has remote control over her PC. I would make sure you update all of your Anti-virus software. Download Malwarebytes and make sure it is up to date. Then do a full scan of each software to find any rogue programs.
Also sleep paralysis is a documented condition where the person awakens before REM sleep is over with. Paralysis and hallucinations are very normal with this condition. She should be evaluated by a doctor since this is a treatable condition.

My computer works fine except for one "infected" Word. It's a file of perhaps 20 pages length containing data that I update on a daily basis. After a while when I'm using this file the computer crashes completely - all power is lost instantly. I've tried copying the data into a new blank Word file but that doesn't work. Crashes don't happen instantaneously, but the do occur repeatedly. Any suggestions about how I can "clean" this file? My AVG virus checker doesn't find it.

The only simple way is to go to Insert, Object, Create from file and choose to insert your file as a link (these are 2003 instructions - would be similar in 2007, though.) However, you will then get a questions about the file having links and do you want to update...every time you open the file.
You could also just insert some text and hyperlink it to the other file.
Finally, someone could probably write some VBA that would insert the file and update it every time you opened it.

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to reformat a Word 2007 document that's been converted over from pdf. So far, I have managed to get rid of the textboxes and floating images using macro.

Now I'm stuck with with paragraph breaks in between sentences. (I'll denote the break with ^p)

There she was, on the TV screen, tousling my hair in relief. It was Thanksgiving, and I ^p
was twelve. We'd gone to see my grandmother in California, the last year before she died.^p

I've tried using the find/replace function... I tried finding the ^p and replacing it with nothing. It got rid of all the breaks and the document became one big block of text... this is not what I was looking for as I still want the breaks between paragraphs.

I've tried find ^p^? (^? being any character), it worked to rid of all the unwanted breaks between sentences, and kept the breaks between paragraphs... but of course... the first character after every break is deleted too...

What else can I try???

Or am I doomed to do this manually by hand.... it's a 200+ page document....

Richard, since no one else responded, I'm going to. I believe you may have a corrupt normal.dot file or, even more likely, a corrupt registry key. The easiest step to take is to rename your normal.dot file. When you launch Word, it will look for normal.dot and, when it doesn't find one, it creates a new, uncorrupt one.

If that doesn't work, you may need to edit the registry. Let us know.

I am experiencing delays when I switch to a Word document. When I first switch to an open Word document from another Word document or another program, there is always a 4 second delay (hourglass) before the document becomes active. I have tried disabling and even deleting the couple of add-ins I have installed. This did not help. I tried adding memory, up to 2 GB now.

I may have several things open but I do not experience this sort of delay with any other programs including Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook, etc.

Beyond the add-ins and memory, I have no idea how to attack this problem. Since I spend half the day working with these documents, comparing, editing and transferring data between them, it is frustrating.

So, my question is, how do I go about figuring out what the problem is?

Thanks,

Hello,

I read about the chain of discussions regarding the blurred text in Win10. I am not sure if my issue is related to Win10 hence this post. I recently bought an ASUS Transformer Chi300 tablet (1920 x 1080 resolution) to process my works, mainly MS Office Word and Excel. Since I have to work on the documents daily for at least ten hours, the blurred texts affect my visual. Anyone has similar observations and solution? Thanks.

I am running Office 95 on Windows 95. I have a document that has a picture on it. I am able to see the picture when the document is open, but if I go to print preview or just print the document it is invisible. It's a logo and I have it on about 50 documents. It does this on everyone. It's like a global setting that has been changed but I can't fix it. Please help.

When I use Word, normally there is a white area
representing the paper where I type and a blue
background. The white "paper" usually is about
two thirds the width of the window. The other third
is the blue background split equally on each side
of the "paper". So in other words, one sixth blue,
two thirds white, one sixth blue. The height of the
"paper" is the whole window from top to bottom. In
fact, it goes beyond the screen. I have to scroll down
to see the lower portion.

Above is what I normally see when I open a Word document.
But now, when I opened a new document, the white area was
about half its normal size. It's only about one third the width of
the window and about three quarters the height of the window.

I don't know why this happened all of a sudden. How do I get
back the normal size document?

Thanks.

Thanks in advance

I'm running Microsoft Office 2003 under Windows XP Pro SP2, with all known patches/updates installed.

I recently completed a document in Microsoft Word 2003 and decided to make some changes.

I created a border around some text. I highlighted the contents of the box and then I moved the mouse up to the "fill color" tool on the menu. I clicked the tool and no colors appear in the drop down menu. The "fill color" tool on the menu shows yellow, but you cannot actually click yellow and use it fill the box.

When I click the "fill color" tool and the drop-down menu opens, the area below the "no fill" option shows empty white boxes with no color. This is rather weird behavior. I used the color option about one month ago and it worked fine.

I don't recall adding any programs to my computer or installing any updates [I don't know if any were installed automatically].

Can someone assist me in restoring this option as I need it. I have a project which HAS to be completed and I really need this option.

Thanks.

Joseph

I don't know why, but I went to open a word document and got this instead: "Word cannot open the document: user does not have access privileges...". I have gone through just about everything from the Microsoft knowledge base, to other forums. I have done just about all I can think of and still get the same problem. The only thing that I can remember doing recently with my word documents was to move them from My Documents to a new folder called "DOCs" inside of the "My Documents" folder. My other word documents on my F: drive do not give me the problem, so I'm pretty sure that it's not the program altogether. I'm guessing that somehow the files have gotten either orphaned or locked out for some reason. I can't locate my Office disc, if I need to re-install the program. I'm hoping that it is an easy fix that I am somehow overlooking. Any suggestions would be very helpful.

A:Solved: Word document access privileges

I figured it out and regained access to my files. What I did was to go to properties\security\Advanced. In the Permission tab I then unchecked the box that said "Inherit from parent the permission entries...". and then clicked Apply. I then went to the Owner tab and in the "Change owner to:" box, highlighted Administrators, and clicked apply also. I don't know if this was necessary, but everything seems to be working again.
