I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

But nobody has answered it in the security forum. here goes:

Pesky problem w/ information bar

I think I understand how all of this works, but apparently I'm missing something. My information bar warns me that my browser does not allow activex controls and this page may not display correctly. The page is in my trusted zone, and I have ActiveX enabled. When I click the bar, nothing happens. It's my webmail inbox page! I've tried resetting the options to 'prompt' and then back again, just to see what would happen, Nothing I change w/ ActiveX changes this behaviour. Out of frustration, I finally removed Norton Internet Security 2005 (took 3 reboots). I installed ZoneAlarm internet security today - problem persists. I also use spybot and ad-aware. I *think* I've checked everything in both of those programs and don't see any setting that would cause this. I've run registry mechanic also.

Possibly related - today I joined a C++ developers forum, and can't login. I keep getting the message the "this site uses cookies, you must have cookies enabled to login". Well, I have cookies enabled for my trusted zone. (I added the forum to my trusted zone). I've even tried accepting all cookies, 3rd party or 1st, doesn't matter, can't login. I added the site to my ZA sites list and enabled all of the cookies there, doesn't matter, can't login.

Ok, I have a 56k 3Com US Robotics internal modem. Prior to getting AOL ( ), the modem software could set the volume of the modem - now it doesnt !

I went in to modem>properties>connection>advanced and changed the extra settings to M0 (thats M zero) so taht the modem is quiet upon connection. HOwever, AOL seems to over-ride this and makes a loud connection noise anyway.

Anyone know how to fix this ?

A:Modem noise and AOL (not a duplicate post btw)

Try placing a ATM0 in place of the M0. I believe AT is like saying "attention modem" and then your command to it is "modem sound off". Its a long shot, but worth a try.

I hope somebody can help me. I just found the W-BOOT-B Virus on my computer, and my anti-virus program did not completely get rid of it! Does anyone know of a patch or download that I can use to get rid of this virus? Can't use my computer, it won't boot properly. I can get to Safe Mode with some trying, so would be able to try to fix it if I knew of some way to download something on a floppy from my other computer (this virus is on my second computer). Thanks ANYONE!
Oh, and I am NOT an advanced user, so hopefully the fix will be an easy one? Yikes!

I have a virus. Whenever I try to access a website that has the virus name on it the virus does not allow the page to load. I've already posted once on this page requesting help. Thankfully someone answered but unfortunately I was unable to reply to the post. Instead I sent a private message describing the problem.

I'm not exactly sure due to the virus whether or not he/she actually received the message. therefore I've taken the initative to see if I can fix this problem by starting a test thread. If I can access this new thread while signed in I'll inform the tech of the breakthrough (somehow) and maybe we can move my thread to this new one.

I gave my old Athlon XP 2800 to my mom. I built it myself and it has an Epox 8RDA+ motherboard.

A week ago she said when she turned it on it beeped and nothing came on the screen. I had my dad look at it and he said the CPU fan wasn't running. This was the fourth or fifth time we had turned it on to troubleshoot it (I live 500 miltes away) so I'm not sure if it stopped running when he was messing with things, or if it hadn't been running the whole time.

Anyway, they sent it to me and I've tried troubleshooting it to no avail. When I first turned it on it got to the bootup screen before freezing. At this point I noticed the CPU speed was listed as 1100 Mhz. Now when I turn it on it doesn't show anything on the screen (what would cause this, a heat issue?)

First I was getting a C1 error, so I tried switching out and trying to each memory stick individually. No luck. Eventually I ended up with a wide array of post codes, including:

C1: Detect memory
26: Reserved
29: Program CPU internal MTRR, Initialize the APIC, Program early chipset, Measure CPU speed, Invoke video bios

Sometimes it would boot up to 29 and then go back down to 26

It seems 95% certain to me that either the CPU or motherboard (or PSU?) has gone bad. Is this correct? If so, how can I find out which one it is so I don't buy the wrong thing? Thanks a lot.

i had recently built a new computer. after installing windows 7 everything was fine, except for during start-up it'd say 'no keyboard deteced'. which it wasn't detecting it because i couldnt acess bios during this. once i came to the windows log in screen, it was then reading the keyboard.

a few days ago i had a power outage during a thunderstorm and now a screen appears when turning on my computer giving me 2 options somehwat like 'continue start up' and 'enter a set up'. these are extremely general ideas of what it says but its not the usual 'start windows normally' screen. i would look but i'm currently at work since i cannot access the internet at home due to these problems lol.

the problem with this screen appearing is that since it is not detecting my keyboard at post, i have no where else to go. i've tried every usb port, as well as a ps/2 keyboard.

i either a. need to figure out how to get past this screen or not have it appear at all or b. figure out how to get it to detect my keyboard.

if you have any suggestions or info i'd really appreciate the help.

A:odd post/bios screen, plus no keyboard detected @ post

you could try removing the CMOS battery on the motherboard and using the jumper to reset the BIOS to factory defaults.

Always us a known good PS/2 keyboard. USB is OK after you have everything setup but unless you enable Legacy USB support in the BIOS the USB keyboard may not be seen by the BIOS (I've had this exact problem).

If the PS/2 keyboard is not seen when plugged into the keyboard PS/2 port move it to the PS/2 mouse port.

So has anyone got any ideas of what to do as my system really needs to be fixed and soon i hope thanks

This is my first post other than my intro.
I am posting this from an uninfected (I hope) netbook.
My Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 computer is exhibiting the symptoms of AntiSpyware Soft or one of its related malware brethren.
I see the instructions posted for removing this abomination under the "Spyware Removal" tab of this site.
On the other hand I see elsewhere that first I should create some logs and post them.
On the other hand the idea of downloading software (rkill, etc) that is required to do either is freaking me out.
On the other hand I saw this site mentioned on PC Mag so it's probably trustworthy - aren't you?

So do I attempt the procedure under Spyware Removal first, or do I do the log thing first?
I hate to even turn on the infected computer, so I want to do the best thing first.
Thanks for being there.

Sys: W2K, SP4; IE6, 512megs SDRAM, 1.2 gig AMD Athlon CPU, ECS K7SEM mobo, Award 6 Bios.

Problem: Upon system startup, power comes on, but nothing else--no beep to indicated the system has entered POST. After several tries, it will finally beep and the harware will come to life.

Once working it will usually keep working as you'd normally expect as power cycle to work. It's mainly after sever hours of being off and now always, over night that the error occurs--no power to the hardware, until several tries.

History: Recently been hit with many Trojans & viruses. They've made it past my NAT router, past my software firewall and have taken apart my McAfee AV program. But they have been contained, before they could do any damage, so I hoped, except I just got a bounced email yesterday, that shows I have been spoofed and my address book copied and is being sent to. So a Trojan got in.

I have SpyBot S&D, Ad-aware, McAfee VS8, two firewalls going. I have cleaned all the viruses/Trojans off the system, out of the registry with S&D, Ad-Aware, VS8, Trendmicros VS and Pandasofts VS programs. As well as using CWShreeder, MRU Blaster, BHO removers, HiJackThis.
The system is clean. no hidden files, every thing ok. It doesn't seem to be an OS problem.

A week ago, my power supply went out.
I replaced it.
It's since replacing it and getting all the viurs/trojan hits that the problem has begun.

Hey there, i am having a problem with my Creative Fatal1ty Gaming Headset - the microphone doesn't want to work... oddly. I have tried the sound setting but it doesn't seem to work.

Also when i try fiddle with the setting to enable the microphone it does not let me "configure" it .... and when i try set up the microphone it doesn't want to start up unless i disable the microphone it would say "Wizard could not start"

My Microphone is not on mute and the the jacks are correctly colour coded in place.

I've had a good look around google but I can't seem to find what I'm looking for - I'm kind of having trouble describing it. What I basically want to do is copy my entire installation of windows (all my files, settings, everything) onto my external hard drive so I can then install a fresh copy of windows on my build in HD, but I still want to be able to access the copy of windows I have put on my hard drive, as I can now. I'm kind of wanting to make two separate computers in a sense. Like when I start up my laptop I can choose if I want to boot from my fresh copy of windows or go to the copy of windows on my external HD.

It's just my current copy of windows is filling up my hard drive and has just turned into an unorganised mess and I've got stuff in there that I need but I can't be bothered to sift through it all; there's too much!

Any help is appreciated!

A:Duplicate everything on HD

I don't think you can RUN Win7 from an external drive -- but others know more about this than I do.

To access your files, you could do an image backup to the external drive, using something like Macrium Reflect, and then "mount" that image as a drive. That will not allow you to RUN it, though.

This was in regard to my previous message with Napster connection speed while downloading. Forgot to mention that I have a 56K modem (I live in a town that refuses to go into the 21st century). That's all.

Someone told me to pick only T1 or DSL connections, because cable had a bad upload

[This message has been edited by Sabra (edited 09-15-2000).]

There is some limitation in uploading but what exactly are you planning to do? If your going to be hosting multiple websites using the cable connection then you may consider a T1 but if it's to be used to just browse the net and downloading things then a cable connection is perfect. Once again a T1 is better but can you afford the price in the range of $800 +++ a month versus about $40 for cable?

If you have a choice of cable or T1 then take either of those over DSL.

Going to 'Manage add-ons' in IE9 due to a possible problem, I noticed that there were duplicate entries in some cases - for example Live Mail & Messenger, Do Not Track Me, Quicktime and Java 10.60.2
Would it be OK to disable one instance and leave the other enabled or would this cause a problem?
Better, is it possible to remove one and leave the other behind?

Also there are 4 instances of Java - SSV Helper, 2SSV Helper, 10.60.2 (twice) and 1.7.0_05
Are all these required or can some be disabled or removed?

Thanks for any help.

Hi, this is a minor bug, been around from earliest days of Win 10.

Search the forum for 'duplicate drives' - you will find more threads like yours.

While you can stop it happening, it tends to come back.

I was using NOD32 anti-virus but it couldn't clean it. I've uninstalled it cause it was a cracked one with unlimited updates. Stupid of me to have used it in the first place. But i think the virus got in through a flash drive.

If in IE he selects a favorite, the page will open twice. Also, when he selects the email icon while off line, when it connects, there are two pages of outlook open as well. Is there a setting I am unaware of that can be changed to solve this? Does it sound like some kind of weird virus? Thank you for any input.

A:Duplicate pages

Are you ABSOLUTLY certain that dad is not double-clicking?

We dbl-clinck everything else, but single click on links
(and a favorite is just another link)

After un plugging Belkin Router, I'm now just plugged straight into my router via fast ethernet - Local Area Connection 1. I now get the following just before startup (blue backround) or when its started as a warning:

" There is a duplicate Name on the work "

I seem to remember setting names, but dont know where all this is on the PC. I believe I entered Network name "Flat" MSHOME or something. I've looked in the properties of the local area connection, but no names or anything are stored there. Do I have to insert the Belkin router CD again, or is this duplicate name on the network on my pc somewhere, if so where???? PLEASE HELP....

A:Duplicate Name on the Network

You should probably have the same workgroup name. But each computer needs to have it's own unique name on the network. Depending on what operating system you have, depends on how you change it.

For Win9x, right click on Network Neighborhood / Properties / Indentity

For Windows2000 and XP, right click on My Computer / Properties / Computer Name

I have NT4.0 that I would like to use as the server for the other three pc's I have but I am having a problem setting it up. Here is my problem. I have cable dsl with a static ip address and I can get on the net fine but when I install the second nic card the dns configuration host & domain name automatically appears on the second nic card and if I delete I also delete it also deletes it on the first nic card. A no win situation and of urse I am talking about the information from the first nic card appearing on the second automatically. I have posted this before but I didn't get any answers that solved my problem but I could really use some help here I would really appreciate it. I would like to use NT 4.0 for once as a server and networked. Something I have never done.

A:Duplicate domain name

You cannot set the second NIC on the same computer to be on another DOMAIN. The static IP addresses are set by your ISP and if they have not given you enough addresses to support the second NIC you need to get another one. The DNS server should eb the same for both NIC's and should stay that way if you want the name server to resolve names. You need to use the NIC connected to DSL as the default gateway to get it to work. Again, make sure you have enough IP addresses for your network and the second NIC.

We are experiencing a problem in our LAN.

Yesterday, suddently, all the PCs on the LAN reported a duplicate IP problem. This was happening everytime a client PC was trying to logon to the network. A dialog box was displayed that notified the user that the PC's IP was used by another PC.

The problem was affecting all PCs thus I thought that it might be a network switch problem.

I switched off the main switch for 2 minutes and then I switched it on, again. This solved the problem but after 4 hours the problem occured again and we had to switch it off and on again.

Today, we did not experience the problem but I would like to ask if someone knows the root cause of such incidents.

Is it the switch, or PC network card?

Also, are there any equipment (hardware / software) tools that I can use in order to determine the root cause of the problem?

Thank you in advance.

A:Duplicate IP problem in LAN

do you have a DNS server on your network to resolve user names to IP allocation.

We had the same problem in a local office where after 20 people had logged on we started get those errors - it turned out to be two servers with overlapping IP address ranges causing the problem - this went on a few days and 1 person was even told to reload there software by the helpdesk!!!!!

I had  system mechanics and usually it revealed so many duplicate files but actually a have removed system mechanics and what about duplicate files on my computes, could any of you help me out????

System Mechanic is a serious piece of junk and your system is better off without it.  Any "information" conveyed by this program should be categorized as "untrustworthy" "to be disregarded" and so on.
One Review
FWIW:  Windows routinely has duplicate files and such are not a source/cause of concern, if these are categorized as system files.  Many programs may install a file needed by that program, in that location.  If such file is removed, then the program may not work as intended.

I found 1874 Duplicate files in my system by using System Mechanic.
My operation system is Windows2000 built on NT technology, many duplicate files found in C:\i386\... and also in C:\winnt\...

I would like to know if I can delete these files. they have many different type, such as *sys, *inf, *dll, *com, *ini, *wav, *hlp, *cfg...... and they took too many space.

Please give me your advise. Thanks.

oh, by the way, if the files can be deleted, should I delete them from C:\i386\... or from C:\winnt\...?

I'm not definate as to the cause of this, but it happened pretty close after installing TweakUI.

When pressing "CTRL" on its own while any explorer or application window is active, Windows 2000 makes it "always on top". This would be a useful feature if you could actually deactivate it without having to close the window/application and reopen it.

Has anyone else experienced this "feature"? It's not documented anywhere in the help of win2k, I initially thought it might be an accessibility feature, but its not.

Any help / solutions would be appreciated.
