I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I am trying to connect Windows 7 to the domain of a Windows 2008 Server. We have ~20 other Windows XP clients able to join and connect to the domain.
I get this error message when trying to join the domain:

An attempt to resolve the dns name of a domain controller in the domain being joined has failed.

I have the TCP/IP set to obtain the IP automatically and the DNS as static with the correct DNS IP.

I can ping the server using both it's IP and host name.
DNS functions propperly when the host name is typed into the URL bar.
It also says that I have limited connection but I think that is because the network that all these computers are connected to is not connected to the web.
Any ideas?

PC was on Windows home version. It was upgraded to Windows Pro but it made us install the anniversity update before we could upgrade.

Joined the computer to the domain with no issue. After reboot we could not log in with the domain user account. Tried other domain accounts too, even domain admin account. It say username or password is incorrect but that is not true.

Tried to unjoin and rejoin to the domain no luck.

Confirmed dns settings on the PC. Using wired connection. Not going through a VPN connection or anything like that.

I have a Windows Server 2012 R2 domain in the dmz. I have a Windows Server 2012 R2 domain in the network. I can access the one in the network to the dmz without a problem, but I cannot access the one in the dmz to the network. The ip addresses in the network are different than the ip address in the dmz. I fowarded the ports but the dmz box still gets blocked. I tried to do it by VPN after setting the router to accept VPN. The connection still gets blocked. I set all the firewall settings.

I'm not sure where to go from here, any help would be appreciated.

I have a windows 2000 advance server that I want to join a Windows 2003 domain server. How many ways are there for joining a windows 2000 server to a domain server? Here's what I did. I right click on the My Computer icon and choose Properties/click Network Identification tab. The only option that is listed in this tab is a Properties button. I click on this Properties button and the next window shows a Workgroup and a Domain radio button. I click on the Domain radio button and type in my domain name in the texbox. I then click OK and the next window popup to type in my domain server's administrator's user name and password. I typed it in and then I receive this error:

The following error occurred attempting to join the domain "myDomain":
The network path was not found.

I'm positive the path is correct. I have done the same thing with 10 other computers and it's working fine. The only difference is that many other computers that I joined have the Network ID and Change button under the Computer Name tab in System Properties, and I click Network ID and that seems to work all the time. But this is a Windows 2000 advance server and it does not have the Network ID button. The only choice is Properties button. So am I doing something wrong? How many ways can I join a windows 2000 server to a domain server?

Any help is much appreciated!

This was originally posted in the Server 2012 forum, but perhaps it's more applicable to Windows 7.

I've joined the Windows 7 Pro workstations to the Domain using the SERVER2012/Connect app and that seemed to work fine.  I made the Users all Standard, not Admin, and access to the Shared folders is working fine too.  Users appear to be in the
Administrators group on the local machine, which is what I need.
However, a number of our applications aren't working correctly ... one writes changes to HKey Current User and those changes will not stick.  Some IE sites that require changes have to be made each time; those changes don't save.  Some
of the ODBC connections to SQL databases are behaving strangly as well.  I tried checking permissions on the Windows Registry keys, and they looked OK.  Turning off User Access Control did not help either.
If I log on to the workstation not using the Domain Account I don't have this problem.  And, one of the workstations which had performed the Windows 10 Upgrade while connected to the previous Domain Controllder works fine.
Any direction would be greatly appreciated!   Thx DMiller

My client has a small domain with SBS server 2003. The server connects to a router which connects to the DSL modem. On the router, dhcp is disabled. The server is a dns server and dhcp is running. All of the client PC's are windows XP and were able to join the domain with no issues. One of the client PC's had to be replaced. The replacement came with windows 7 pro x64 installed.
From the windows 7 PC I can see the other PC's on the network, can see the server, can access the shares on the server, and remote into the server. I can also ping the dns server. There are 2 ways to join the domain. The first one used a wizard on the windows 7 PC. When I go thru the wizard it tells me that there is no account on the domain controller for the PC. If I do it manually it tells me the dns couldn't find the controller. The dns server is the domain controller. I have also tried using a static IP like the XP machines have and got the same problems. I have also created the computer account on the server manually
The server has sp2 installed. I have looked on the net and found some different solutions like making changed to the local security policy but none of those have worked. I am stumped. Anybody know of a solution?

A:Win 7 Pro can't join SBS Server 2003 domain

Welcome to Seven Forums,

Please see attached file and make sure that in Computer Name/Domain Changes, then click on More...that you have the correct domain name under 'Primary DNS suffix of this computer' - for example company.local.

Try setting it up to Static IP again and verify that from the Windows 7 LAN setting the DNS is pointing to the Server's DNS which is a Private IP and not an external IP then change it back to DHCP. Try manually connecting to your domain again.

An update will be nice.

I have a server running Windows 2003 server. I have an XP Pro box (without Net Beui) that I would like to have join the server domain. I can't get it to do so. Any suggestions?

By the way, in the same cabled network, I have an NT4 server on a totally separate domain. I have Win 98 boxes joined to that domain as well as XP Pro boxes. The only way I could successfully get those to join this NT4 server domain was to add net beui to those boxes.

I have also tried to have a XP Pro box (with net beui installed on it as a protocol) join the 2003 server domain and it refuses also. The error message I get says:

A domain controller for the domain KCP could not be contacted. Ensure that the domain name is typed correctly. If the name is correct, click Details for troubleshooting information.

Note: This information is intended for a network administrator. If you are not your network's administrator, notify the administrator that you received this information, which has been recorded in the file C:\WINDOWS\debug\dcdiag.txt.

The domain name KCP might be a NetBIOS domain name. If this is the case, verify that the domain name is properly registered with WINS.

If you are certain that the name is not a NetBIOS domain name, then the following information can help you troubleshoot your DNS configuration.

I can use the internet, Ping the gateway, and dns. Nslookup is pointing to the right server/domain.

It's not the protocols it is Active Directory that is the issue. What is the current DNS name of the server? Most orgs name them something like domainname.local and you need to have it exactly like it is in DNS.

I just setup a Windows Server 2003 server (Hostname MS01), including Active Directory, DNS, and DHCP. The server is on a private LAN, no other domain controllers, DNS servers, etc are present.

The private LAN includes VMware guest OSs, Windows 2000 Adv Server servers, and Windows Server 2003 Servers.

The Windows 2000 Adv Server servers join the new domain hosted by MS01, no problem.

The Windows Server 2003 systems cannot join the domain. The following message is returned:

The following error occurred attempting to join the domain ...
The specified server cannot perform the requested operation

They can resolve to the domain name, but the domain basically is refusing them from joining.

All servers have the same administrator login/password.

All servers can resolve hostnames through the DNS server.

Any ideas?

Hi folks,
I have some weirdness going on here and it's wrecking my head. I have a customer with a small network landscape. 1 server, 1 OU, Windows 2012 standard with 20 CALS. They only have 8 machines at the moment. 1 laptop was wiped out by ransomware. Scanned/cleaned
the server and all clients.  I did a clean install of Windows 7 Ent. on the laptop, but when I try to join it to the domain, I get this "The specified server cannot perform the requested operation" error.  I have removed the machine from
AD and DNS, and renamed the machine (all in separate operations). Verified that DNS is working properly with ipconfig and nslookup. I can join other machines to the domain without any problem (my service laptop native OS and two VMs on the laptop). Can't find
anything of value in the event logs of the server or the client.  Can't find anything in support searches that don't relate to DNS errors or server replication errors.  I don't have DNS/DHCP errors, and there is no replication.
Many thanks,

Hi Everyone
I am new to networking. We have a Win 2003 Server, single NIC,running a database, with 10 workstations joined under a domain. All are connected by a switch. Our internet router died and I bought a Netgear 300 that accesses the net thru a ubee modem. The Netgear is ethernet connected to the switch also. Server has DCHP disabled and router is DCHP enabled.
Problem: I can connect any of the workstations to the net with an automatic TCP/IP setting, and they will still be able to use the database. I can connect the server the same way, but if I do so, the workstations cant access the Database on the LAN anymore. If I return the NIC tcp/ip to static add for the server, it works but cant see the internet.

I know most servers have two NIC's and that it's fairly simple to set one up for the internet, one for the LAN.

Can anyone direct me to an article/answer that will educate me re: this dilemma? Have searched all over net, with lots of info but none specifically addressing this question.

I've been trying to join a new Windows 7 Professional machine to a domain controller running Windows 2003 Server with no luck.  We currently have 4 Windows XP machines running on that domain without any issues, but when I try to add the Windows 7 computer,
here is what happens:

A computer account on the domain could not be found (confirmed it is already there)
I put in the computer name and domain again, and Administrator credentialsNow it tells me: "An attempt to resolve the DNS name of a DC in the domain being joined has failed."
I currently have DNS on the Windows 7 PC set to the Domain Controller and have IPv6 unchecked under Network Properties.  I can even ping the domain name (resolves to IP of the domain controller).  It looks like it can, indeed, find the domain from
the message in step 1, so am I missing something here?
Thanks in advance for any help!

I am trying to help a friend set up a small business office (less than 10 users) with some sort of central user database so they can log into each computer with the same profile and password authentication. He has computers using XP and 2000 and a central server just acting as one to store files (Server is not loaded on it). Without an Active Directory, how can I setup centralized authentication. The only thing I am used to is Active Directory. Any help[ would be appreciated.

A:Windows central user server without domain

You cant setup centralized authentication without a server. If you want all your users to be able to logon to every computer in your office they would have to be connected to a domain or you will have to setup their username and password on every computer.

I have a strange problem I cant workout. It started with a new customer RDP 2012 server which we could not connect to an app once logged in.
If on an external PC it works OK.
If I create a fresh PC on our LAN it works.
If I this PC to the domain, it works.
If I move the PC to a UK Specific OU it stops working
If I move back out of the OU it still does not work
If I remove from the domain and do "GPUPDATE /FORCE /BOOT" and reboot and log backon as local admin account it still does not work!!
So there seems to be something in particular on the GPO in the UK OU in AD which causes the problem but even after moving the computer out it seems to store this mysterious setting and fails to work unless reimaged.
Any suggestions besides adding each option one by one in test GPO/OU????

Which other programs do these messages appear in,
Obviously this particular program relies on an Internet connection and accessing a database on the site which not many programs I know of do this ?

He said that last semester, a student joined a WIN7 machine to a WIN NT 4.0 domain. So..I have researched it.....I discovered one post that discussed how it was possible on the win 7 beta version. However i do not have that version. Does anybody out there have any idea how one might do this? Can I use Samba? Are there any registry tricks I can try.. from what i can tell there are Trust issues between the two operating systems that are the real problem. Anybody?

I have a XP Pro PC that won't joing a NT 4.0 domain. It says the "domain could not be contacted". Also, I can map to drive shares on the NT server but ONLY if I use the IP address of the server vs the Server name....

I know the PC is getting an IP properly. I can browse the Internet and everything under "ipconfig /all" looks right...

Is this a problem on the XP machine or the NT 4.0 server?
