Move a Large Branch - Don't Dig a Bigger Hole

Q: Move a Large Branch - Don't Dig a Bigger Hole

I am running Win7/Pro x64.

I recently managed to unwittingly move a large branch (multiple levels of branching and many files) into my "My Documents" folder. I would like to undo what I did, but I have no idea how I did it. My guess is that I made a massive misuse of drag-and-drop

Said another way, I had a directory (very large, multi-branched folder) called "MyImageFiles" at the same level on my data drive as "My Documents." Now it is buried one level down in "My Documents."

What is the simplest way to undo this?

Thanks

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

So I just went from Ubuntu back to Windows 7, and the thing I miss the most is the dock. So I got a dock emulator for windows and decided to move the taskbar to the top of the screen, sort of like Ubuntu. However my problem lies with the way applications maximize. When they do, they leave a gap at the bottom of the screen, where the taskbar was. Now I just want my applications to go full screen, all the way to the bottom. Does anyone know how to go about doing this?

Hi there,
I was just wondering is there anyway to edit the size of the icons more than the 'Extra large Icons' maybe a tool or some manual way ?
Thanks.

A:Bigger than 'Extra large Icons' ?

Hello MoeX,

Very good question and this has baffled me; i have done some research for you.

It appears that a icon's Value (size) are in pixels and range from 0x20 (32) to 0x100 (256) with the default being 0x60 (96).
(32) being the smallest, and (256) the "extra Large".

However Microsoft don't allow bigger then 256 Pixels (Extra Large). Bit of a bummer really.
There 3rd party applications available that allow you to view your photos in a bigger view, but not permanent thumbnails.

I'm sure there is a way to make them bigger if you had edited the registry, but i DO NOT recommend this, unless you are 100% sure what you are doing. and have a Back-up and Restore Point.

My desktops Hd recently started failing and so today I ordered a new one that is 250gb larger. I understand how to back up most of my files and have an external to do so but I do not have install disk for the windows 7 os as my computer came with it installed. My product key for my os is still on the sticker on the side of the tower but as this new Hd is 100% blank i need to move the os somehow and I am unsure as to how I am supposed to do this. I have read alot about cloning a Hd but am wondering if this is my best option. to be safe you need to copy all old HDD partitions on the new, just tell the clone software to don't resize the original partitions, so at the end you will end with 500GB used by the old partitions and 500GB of unallocated partitions. once booted sucessfully to windows on the new HDD, from windows Disk management, you can create the 2 new partitions of the needed sizes. I just added a 160 gigabyte hard drive as my 30 gig was filling up and giving me messages that it was close to full. I forgot to ask the technician whether it should be formatted any particular way. So that's one question: How can I check if things are set up correctly?

And second: How do I actually move files to the new hard drive? Do I just put a shortcut on the desktop and drag n' drop the old files onto it? Will they completely move from one disc to the other or will it just add a copy if I do it this way?

If it matters I have the basic XP edition windows.

I have installed win XP pro a couple of days ago, and I thought that it would be a good idea to put windows in a separate partition. Since then I have installed a few applications on a different partition, but it is not uncommon for applications to put something in the program files folder anyway.

Is there a safe and easy way of having "my documents" and or "program files" on a bigger partition? Or would that defeat the whole point of a system partition?

Would be glad of some advice.

Tell me if it's a bad idea!

P.S. Is there a way of telling if the system partition is on the outer or inner edge of the HD?

I'm trying to move a 11GB file from my internal harddrive to an external one via firewire. I have both a 250GB LaCie ext HDD and a 500GB Maxtor ext HDD. The Maxtor is completely free and empty. Anyways, when I try copying the 11GB file to either HDD, a message pops up saying "Cannot copy [filename]. There is not enough free disk space." I was able, however, to copy a folder containing a total of 35GB to both HDDs (the folder contained lots of small files all under 20MB). Transferring a single 2GB file works for both as well. So it seems as though larger file sizes don't want to transfer, but why?

I have two internal HDDs and am able to transfer large files back and forth between them just fine.

A:Can't move large file to external HDD

the maximum file size supported in FAT32 is 4 GB.

you may convert the file system of your external drive to NTFS, which renders the drive useles to certain operating systems that do not have native NTFS support.

How to convert a volume to NTFS from the command prompt:

1. Open Command Prompt. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, and then click Command Prompt.

2. In the command prompt window, type: convert drive_letter: /fs:ntfs

For example, typing convert D: /fs:ntfs would convert drive D: to the ntfs format. You can convert FAT or FAT32 volumes to NTFS with this command.

I hope I can explain this properly.

In Windows 7 Professional x64, I have specified the size of icons appearing on my desktop (about half way between 'small' and 'medium'). This works very well and consistently.

However, when I move or copy a file to the desktop via right-click, or when I create a shortcut on the desktop via right-click, Windows creates a large size image of the file icon for me to drag and drop. Not only is the icon itself large, but it includes a substantial amount of space on all four sides of the icon. My file and folder icons in Windows Explorer are not even close to that size.

This causes a problem when I have several Windows open, because in that case I may be moving/copying/shortcut-ting to a relatively small area on my desktop, and the icon I am moving/copying/shortcut-ting doesn't fit into that small space because the icon, including the area around it, is so large. Consequently, Windows moves it to some other place on my desktop, where it finds enough space, and then I have to go looking for the icon.

This problem is particularly annoying when I have several files to move or copy, in which case Windows may scatter the moved/copied icons all over my desktop.

How can I reduce the size of the icon that appears for drag-and-drop, as well as the selected space around it?

A:Copy/Move Uses Large Icons

I suggest you turn off the "align icons to grid" and "auto arrange icons" options, to give you complete 100% control over where you want your desktop icons to live. Windows will not interfere at all.

Right-click on desktop, move the mouse over View to get the flyout, and uncheck these two options.

Note that this won't solve your "large icons" issue when you perhaps would want them to be somewhat smaller. But it will give you 100% control over icon placement and will never see Windows move it somewhere you don't want it to go. Wherever you put it... that's where it will stay, unless YOU drag it somewhere else.

I have a huge collection of mostly legacy, currently unused fonts in a folder called MyFonts on my D drive (non-system HD). I noticed that one of these old files had a wonky way-future date, and therefore was getting backed up every day for no good reason. I have had success editing the Modified Date with Attribute Changer, but that failed in this case.

So I thought I would just delete the font file and get on with my life. But noooo...

"The action can't be completed because the file is open in System"

So I can't change the attributes, I can't delete it, I can't move it. So I ran something I had lying around called deletelockedfolder (dot bat) which successfully changed the ownership of all 8000+ files in MyFonts folder to me, the admin, which has worked in the past for other issues, but still no change here.

Most interestingly, ALL FONTS in the MyFonts folder have the same problem, I can't move or delete them. I first just tested one or two as an experiment, thinking they would be fine, since they don't have the date problem, but they also are "open in System" when I try to delete them. JUST FONT FILES, other non-font files in the same folder are fine.

None of these fonts are among my actual system Fonts, or at least I can't see them in the Fonts control panel. Since I got this new Win7-64 desktop, which does not run Adobe Type Manager, I don't think I have installed ANY fonts in there. And certainly not the dozens of random crappy old ttf's I teste... Help is appreciated.

A:Cannot move large files into External Drive

Is your external drive formatted in FAT32 by chance? If so then that would be why small files work and large ones do not, with FAT32 the file size is limited to just under 4GB.

You'd need to reformat or convert the file system to NTFS on the external drive to allow it to store files 4GB and larger.

This has happened before with a few things, but usually only temporarily, however with a program I've recently downloaded there seems no way to see the full GUI at all. I've been looking for cross platform video editors and have been trying kdenlive, openshot and handbrake. I've tried them on my linux system and am now looking at them on my windows 8.1 system too. Handbrake (does anyone know if the GUI is metro style on windows 8.1 with weird white bits covering over with options, totally unlike the linux GUI for it) has a GUI too big for my screen*. I want to look at the lower parts of the GUI but it is too tall. If I try "alt"+"space" and then pick "move" and use the arrow keys I can get the window to go where I want it, with the top of the GUI disappearing of the top of my screen and the bottom of the GUI now reachable. But then when I hit enter to "put the window down" in this new location it snaps back to having the top of the window at the top of my screen, so the bottom is inaccessible. What can I do about this, it is bad when it happens with avast's updater but for once a month things I can temporarily switch to the small mode for display in control panel, but for a program I'm trying to test and get to know I don't want to be having to change screen resolution like that, I need to be able to get windows to go off the top of my screen. I dissagree in some part.

To say OOP as a whole is a failure i tihnk would be over generalising things. In some respects there has been no visible use for it. But in terms of some software devlopment it has been a vast improvement.

For example since switching all of my PHP web applications to a OOP scheme has enabled me to create moremodular designs capable of greater flexibility and scalability. Also i have noticed significant speed and efficiency increases over traditional code schemes.

Seems to be normal, I was told. But as this happens anyway, i want to slow down the process as hard as possible. F.ex. by using ccleaner and transferring the temp-folder to another partition, etc.

Yet there seem to be strange things happening. I just encoded a video to a non-C-location. during the encoding the C: partition gained a few hundred MB's. But as the encoding was finished, those few hundred mb's didnt delete themselves again, even after running ccleaner.

So, basically all i did was encoding a file which is not on C: into another file, which also is not on C:. Yet C: gained finally a few hundres mb's.

Anyone know why that is?

A:C-Partition gets bigger and bigger

When you run C cleaner, by default it looks for certain areas... particularly when you are decoding / encoding videos it will create a temp file.

If the temp file is not inside the Windows Directory, the Cleaner won't find it unless you tell it to look there.

Also, if your encoder / decoder program is not told to delete the left behinds it will in fact keep the temp files there as well. There are a lot of scenarios.

The way I do it for a chain of doctors offices is through linksys VPN routers. Yes there are better ways, but we run a practice management software on a unix server using an emulation software so we don't send and recieve a lot of data. But the linksys VPN routers also use netbios so the machine son the other end are in your network neighborhood. It just depends on what you need to do over that VPN connection. Oh, and you need a static WAN IP address from your ISP at the main location.

I have one office with a 2K3 small business server, 9 nodes and getting broadband
via router with built in firewall.

Another branch office is opening soon, that will have a 8 more nodes (computer) and
again this office will have its own ADSL connection via a router.
I want to have it so, users in the new office van VPN on to the 2K3 small business server and operate as if they were sitting in the main office.

What is the best setup/good piece of kit to use for this purpose?

I take it I will need a VPN router and some VPN client software on the PCs?

Can anyone recommend me some products?
Thanks for any help and assistance.

PS:- I am quite new to VPN, but know about OWA and OWW

I have been trying to confirm whether Win10 support BOPD printing in the same way as Win8.1 did and described here;

https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/.../jj134156.aspx

All the references I can find talk about win8 and 8.1 and none mention Win10.

If Win10 doesn't support this does anyone know of a utility that can replicate this feature? I have lots of small offices on thin WANs that will need to print and I would like to get rid of local print servers when we move to Office 365.

TIA

I have run AVG, Kaspersky, Bitdefender, Adaware, Malwarebytes, Hitman Pro, Ccleaner and Cloud System Booster. A few of these found files in C:\Users\Derrick\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\Local Storage called https_dragonbranch-a.akamaihd.net_0.localstorage-journal and https_dragonbranch-a.akamaihd.net_0.localstorage. Both files have been deleted but they just came back. It came with a 'free' facebook video downloader a few days ago.

I should also mention that it's not in my add/remove programs list or chrome extensions. Tried all the 'guides' I could find, none worked. They all seem to recommend Spyhunter 4, which is suspicious to me.

Hey I am helping a family member setup a network and need help.

the setup is as follows

Store "A"
Store "B"
"Main office"

He wants to let Store A & B use the main sale software which is located in the Main Office. How can we do this, should I just setup a VPN for both stores so that they can login to the main office or would I need a back-end server. Thanks

And they are in the same building or contiguous?

I would to with the VPN... unless there are a lot of computers, meaning more than 8

Hello all, and thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

Seems like a simple enough question, but not one I'm easily finding an answer to - either here or in Google. If I'm the 4,376,124th user to ask this question, then please be done with me and point me at the right link. I'd appreciate it.

I'm doing a clean install of Windows 7 and, at some point, plan to branch off from Administrator and create a Standard User account which I will use thereafter. Many people seem to believe this is the safest way to run - though in the past I've always just done the simple thing and run as Admin all the time. If you think this is a bad idea, point me to a link or tell me why. I'd really appreciate it.

Otherwise, my question is this: When do I create and make the switch over to the new Standard (non-Admin) account? Right after I've install W7 and all the drivers and all the updates, OR later after I've installed Office, Photoshop, and all my various utilities? Not having done this before, it's unclear to me whether everything I install with just the Admin account will be visible with the Standard User account. It'd be nice to make the switch AFTER I've installed essentially everything I plan to use so that all the software would be accessible to both Admin and Standard user. Does that make sense?

You'd think Microsoft would have a simple discussion about this on their website since they really push not running all the time as admin. Perhaps I'm just not finding it, though I thin... Read more

A:On a new install, When do I branch off to Standard User?

The standard user account will constantly be badgering you for the admin password to install apps and do various things.

I would at least suggest creating a second user account with admin privileges, this way if there is a problem, you can always return to the clean main admin account to troubleshoot and attempt resolution.

If you are the only person using the machine and plan on installing an antivirus application I really don't see the harm in using a user account with admin privs, I would not use the primary admin account though.

Hey guys

Our company has a few branches located in the Midwest. One of the branches has a bad connection through the local ISP and they seem to lose it a lot.

They were considering getting a cable back up connection because right now they use a telephone based DSL.

I was wondering what kind of equipment do I need to make a VPN tunnel, that way I dont need to VPN each individual computer. If someone is a PRO in VPN please do let me know what is all required ie router, switch etc to have like a VPN box to avoid VPNing individual computers and the VPN will run over the cable internet backup.

Hi all

I have a branch office that uses a low grade home router vpn link to connect to our main office this causes very slow response time when users are connecting to mapped drives.

Im thinking of going the rodc route further down the road when we go to server 2008 to improve log on times, but a rodc to my understanding does not have anything to do with the mapped drives as its not a full copy of the main office DC.

For now id like to speed up the access times to the mapped drives for the branch office users, Im musing over having them stored locally on a pc hooked onto their network and then somehow have the changes mirrored to the main office.

Anyone got an idea?

Thanks for reading

A:Branch office slow link

What are the specifics of your branch office's internet connection? What is slow for the users with mapped drives? Is it mounting the network share and/or the actual file transfers? What router are we talking about?

I hope you're aware that many low grade VPN routers suffer drastic performance issues when they have to do any type of encrypted traffic. You can have a VPN router perform at say around 20 to 30 Mbps of routed throughput but only do about 1 to 2 Mbps when moving data across a VPN tunnel. Also, you may have to manually adjust your MTU settings on both ends of the VPN tunnel to account for fragmentation and overhead of the VPN tunnel.

Depending on the speed of your remote branch Internet connection, it may be worth the expense to upgrade the router to see if this helps. It'll be cheaper than the other alternative which is to implement a WAN acceleration product.

It has been confirmed by Gabe that the rs1_branch is definitely the Redstone update, however this is only available to a small portion of people at the moment. I must be the luckiest person among the few to receive this update.

Well what would I expect I have been a loyal Microsoft customer for years now

I am no longer on th2 as of 29/11/2015, but still on 10586

A:Confirmed: Windows Branch Set to rs1_branch.

So if I press the Check for Updates now probably a 50/50 chance it will pop up?

First thing, I know next to nothing about computers.
We have a problem with our monitor switching off after start-up. The only way we can turn on the computer is by disabling the video card (Radeon x1300 pro).

Last thing that we did before the computer stopped working was to load suggested Windows Updates.
"Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - August 2009 (KB890830)
Update for Windows Mail Junk E-mail Filter [August 2009] (KB905866)
Security Update for Windows Vista (KB973540)
Update for Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 Junk Email Filter (KB972691)
Security Update for Windows Vista (KB973507, KB971657, KB971557, KB956744)"

We have tried updating the Radeon Video card which is now updated.
We tried re-installing the Viewsonic monitor wizard cd and it said that we had to manually install a component (display optimization files)for Vista but then it wouldn't complete the installation. The viewsonic file in program files is there but empty.

Now I've found that the Monitor device in Device Manager is gone so I can't try to enable or change anything to do with monitors.
Help!!

A:No monitor branch in device manager

I have no access to another monitor to see if the problem is with the monitor itself.

Just wondering if I should spend the $200 on a new monitor or getting the computer fixed by tech guys?

My son has a business with about a dozen Windows 10 workstations. So far, he has done well with a common home-type router and a sixteen-port switch. He blocks sites in the router's blocked list; but, he has discovered his Netgear router has no provision for blocking https sites.

Time for a new router and he has asked my help in selecting one.

I Googled and found there are several kinds of routers and I have no idea of their features and which type is best for his network. Of the Branch, Edge and Core Routers, which one is the common home-type? If none are, what should I look for in a home-type router for his business?
