Set smart card as default "sign-in option"?

Q: Set smart card as default "sign-in option"?

Just wondering if anyone knows if its possible to set the default logon prompt as smart card?
Currently, it prompts you with the last used method (i.e. username and password or smart card and pin).
I know that you can force smart card only logon by "scforce" Group Policy (Computer Configuration\Windows Settings\Security Settings\Local Policies\Security Option), but I want to keep the options and just make it a default option.
I also tried changing the "LastLoggedOnProvider" in the to the smartcard option here "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Authentication\LogonUI" and here "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Authentication\LogonUI\SessionData",
but this did not make any difference.

Preferred Solution: Set smart card as default "sign-in option"?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi all
Previously the  "Save Picture"  box would put a web generated title in the box and automatically selected JPEG.  Now the title box reads "untitled" and the only file options offered are "png" & "bmp"

Please note that a similar post has appeared, but the solution did not match the fault.  I'm seeking to restore the automatic response to save picture, that might have been upset by antivirus clean-up programme.

Thank youin advance for considering my problem

Hi,

When our website users click on an html attachment embedded on a web-page in IE9, the download manager will not display the "Open" option. It will only display "Save" and "Cancel" which our users don't like, having to save the
html document in a folder to open it. Whereas, when downloading attachments like pdf, word etc. all three options are displayed.

Is there any setting to tweak , which will display all the 3 options for HTML attachments as well?

A:IE9 download manager will not display "Open" option (only "Save" and "Cancel" is displayed) for downloading HTML documents.

Hi,
As you know, the Open-Save-Cancel dialog box helps you prevent your computer from affecting by virus while downloading.
So I suggest you test to reset all zones to a lower level temporarily and then please attempt to download this html attachment again.

However, since you can normally download the other documents, I suspect there is some restriction in the website which you are trying to view. I recommend you to contact the administrator of that website if possible.
could you please send me the link of the website from where you are trying to download the html attachment?
Thanks!

Is there a way in 10 to add modifiers or switches to a default program?

For example, I would like a .xlsx Microsoft Excel file to open with C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\EXCEL.EXE" /e "%1 (That is, adding " /e "%1 to the command line of the .exe file)

Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Default Programs\Set Associations lets me change the default program, but not HOW the program opens.
When I click on a file type, a pop up only gives me the option of keeping the existing default, or looking for a different app. But no right-click option or otption to modify how the program opens (as I believe there was in XP & 7).
(Also, is there a better way I could have described the issue in the subject line?)

Thank you,
Ed

A:How do you edit default program for file type to include "/" option?

I would think you should be able to edit the shortcut to the executable with command switches or create a batch file to run using those same switches. Nothing should have changed with this process in Windows 10.

Cannot keep "thumbnails" as default viewing option throughout Windows Explorer programs & functions

Running XP Home, Version 2002, SP2

All my folders are set to thumbnail in windows explorer, but when I go to send a picture on msn or open in another application the pictures are in list view.

This requires an extra step to view the thumbnail, having to go to "view menu" then check thumbnails to preview files before opening/sending.

I have scoured the internet for a solution, to no avail.

Anyone be so kind as to lend any expertise on the issue?

Thank you.

I have never been able to solve this, and it is really annoying. Anytime I open a folder with many file types, I'd like it to be grouped by "Type." However, "Type" is never displayed as an option in explorer, and I then have to select the "More" scroll down and choose "Type" then go through the "group by" process again. It's a lot of extra clicks, especially when I have to do this with lots of folders. How do I get "Type" to display in the "Group by" right click in explorer? Or better yet, how can I get folders to automatically display files grouped by type?

Dear all

When I open "My Computer" and then click to open one of the local or mapped drives, instead of opening that drive I get a "Search" window launched. I can open the drives by right clicking and selecting "Open", but I'd much rather just be able to open them normally!

The strange thing (to me, anyway) is that this only happens in "My Computer" - not in any other folder or window...

All thoughts and offers of help welcome!

I need to programmatically make some adjustments to the Internet Explorer security settings. Most of these settings I have found but there are a few I have not been able to get a clear exact location for in the registry. I will be using a .BAT file to make
the adjustments on 100+ PCs.

Here is what I am looking for.....

Under the "Internet  Properties" found in control panel, under the "Privacy" tab there is an "Advanced" option button. When I click on it I get an "Advance Privacy Settings" options box. On it are several settings.
The first setting, "Override automatic cookie handling" needs to be checked in order to access the other options. I can do that by adjusting the DWord value of "PrivacyAdvanced" under the "Internet Settings" key in the registry,
"HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet settings", to be specific.

What I have not been able to find are the registry entries for the "First-party Cookies" "Accept, Block, or Prompt" options, the "Third-party Cookies" "Accept, Block, or Prompt" options, and the "Always allow
session cookies" check box. Please see picture below....

I have seen references to the following settings as being where those options exist, but nothing that explains ... Read more

Will smart card authentication create a false positive alert within ATA version 1.7 for the alert titled "Encryption Downgrade Activity"? I'm trying to confirm some information that purportedly came from Microsoft employees
demonstrating ATA during a conference some time ago. If so, what is the technical reason for this false positive? My understanding is that when a user authenticates with a smart card (using Kerberos with AES TGT
encryption) and while logged on subsequently authenticates to a resource using username/password (for example using Run-As/User Account Control to perform administrative tasks), the TGT ticket request for the subsequent Kerberos TGT encryption type
is downgraded to RC4. Why the downgrade?

Hello. I'm new to this site and I'm not really good with technology and I just need help with the pop up.
I have a Windows 8 ASUS (that's the company thing, not talking in all caps) and when I first got my laptop (2 years ago on Christmas, about to be 3 years since it's coming up soonish) I downloaded Chrome. It let me download it, then I wanted to download some gaming emulator (Project64) and a pop up came up.
I'll send a link later if it's needed.
The main problem is this:
+ it says Connect a Smart Card
+ Type Admin. Password then Press Yes
+ It doesn't give the option to even type a password or anything
+ my mom and I pressed details and that didn't help.
+ I went to some random site and it said,"Enable the Smart Card". It was already enabled. I disabled it, then enabled it again to see if it would do something. Nothing worked.
My step dad who is really good at computer stuff asked,"How much storage is on your hard drive?" I don't even know
I recently deleted /everything/ on my laptop. Except for Chrome.
Maybe I need to take off Chrome?
I'm not sure. Can someone please help me?

The "Idle-time Full System Scan" in Norton 360 v4 is bogging down my computer constantly, and there is no option to turn it off in "Automatic Tasks".

I contacted Norton and (after several attempts to find someone at Norton who could understand what I just said above and getting "hung-up" on over Norton chat. Inexcusable!!!) I was able to get a hold of a technician who told me that Norton intentionally removed this option "for security reasons, because they didn't want people turning it off".

The problem is, people will then be forced to turn it off by turning off ALL scheduled tasks (under "Settings/Scheduling/Schedule:Manual Schedule") and that is an even worse security problem than the relatively small one that would be created by turning off idle-time full system scanning.

Once the system has completed a full system scan, all files are on-access scanned anyway, so running a full system scan every 3-4 days is rather silly and extremely annoying--especially, because it will continue to try to run every time the system is idle if you cancel it.

A warning urging the user to not turn off idle-time full system scans without fully understanding the risks, and after explaining the risks, would be VERY preferable. Or at least the option to run the full system scans when the system is idle on a certain day of the month/week! The schedule for idle-time full system scans really needs to be separate from other tasks. In fact, t... Read more

I switched the service back to the normal Automatic (not delayed) start, and everything seems to be working again. I was wondering if anyone else experienced this issue?

Also, can someone enlighten me about this warning message "DEP/ASLR Policy settings are ineffective by default; see user's guide on how to enable them". It appears when I enable the DEP/ASLR EMET GPO. I couldn't find any reference to this warning

This is a question regarding a computer that intermittently ?hangs? at ?sign out?. When it hangs, the screen goes black and no commands are possible. The only recovery is to depress and hold the power button. The computer is a laptop Toshiba Satellite L55-C5272 that was purchased in March 2016 and came with Windows 10. Again, the ?hang? randomly occurs during sign out and will occur maybe 1 or 2 times every 20 sign outs. No other operating problems have been noticed. I have tried to isolate the source of this problem but no success. I have run a ?sfc? scan and no problems were detected. I have run the DISM tool and no problems were detected. I have disabled the anti-virus and the hang still occurs. The primary programs and applications that are installed are: ESET anti-virus, Office 2010, Firefox browser, and Goggle Earth. No games have been installed are run. Of course some games came with the system but none has ever been activated. The system has been rebuilt 3-times in an attempt to rectify the problem. As additional info, the ?hang? has occurred during sign out after a period of no usage after a restart. Any guidance on isolating and/or correcting the problem would be appreciated.

NB: When I refer to Default profile I am never referring to the system profile named Default User. This situation with the names has made my issue Google proof.

I recently purchased a laptop with a clean install of Windows XP SP3. It did not ask for a password at first log on and came up with all the expected messages at start up of a brand new Thinkpad.

I changed the user name to X61S and added a password for this user. I noticed later the profile directory in use for X61S in Documents & Settings is still named Default despite the user name change. After having used the laptop for a couple of days, I think this mismatch was causing me issues in setting network share permissions.

I created a new profile named Jeff. My network permissions problems are resolved when using this profile.

I created a new profile named Admin and using it I copied the X61S profile to the Jeff profile using the Control Panel\System\Advanced\Users\Copy To feature so that I would retain settings of installed programs. This didn't work as well as I'd hoped - some of the installed programs did not like it.

Thinking I was defeated and would need to begin again, I shut the computer down and went to bed.

This morning I logged in to the original X61S profile to check my email only to be greeted as if it were an entirely new profile - there are no settings for any installed applications. I checked the Documents & Settings folder and much to my surprise, I'm using a new profi... Read more

Hey,

I installed windows 7 ultimate 32 bit and updated to service pack 1. I made a system image using windows default recovery console. Everything was fine. But today I needed to restore my computer to a previous restore point. Every time I press F8 to get to the advanced boot option I see everything is okay except the "repair your computer" option. Somehow the "repair your computer" option disappeared. I tried ctrl+F11 button and the F11 button too. F11 button worked for my previous vista home premium but for Win-7 it's the F8 key. Can anyone help me with this please? How may I get the "repair your computer" option back? Is there any way to edit advanced to boot option to get that option back? Whenever I perform a "Save As..." or a "Save File" (e.g. with an email attachment), the pop-up save menu always defaults to NOT displaying the navigation pane(s) showing the existing folders/files in the target folder - see thumbnail below left.

To view the folder tree and folder/file list (see thumbnail below right), you have to click on the "Browse Folders" button at the bottom left.

Is there a registry hack or other setting that will reverse this setting for me?

Which version of Internet Explorer do you have? Is it 8, 9, or 10? I only have 8 and I didn't see any way of changing this in there and mine does not do what yours does, so I'm thinking that you have either 9 or 10. If you do, then I will install the version you have and take a look.

You see, this kind of thing can be changed in other browsers like Firefox, and it has been possible for as long as I can remember (several years).

Hey folks,

My first post on here but I'm in serious trouble. I got a "new" (to me anyway) desktop running XP today and found the audio hardware wasn't working. So I pillaged an old machine for its sound card, and inserted that onto the motherboard. Also connected the Aux and CD lines to the top of the daughterboard.

Since then, to my horror, the machine has failed to boot. All plugged in, keyboard working, screen on and being used on another box for this very post. All I get now is the usual chirps from the internal soundcard followed by a few very low notes, definitely depressing so I guess they're suggesting something's failed. There's no further action from the CPU, the fan still works, but there is no screen output whatever.

Have I fried the motherboard without realising?!

Also, ironically, the last failure tone was delivered by my speakers through the originally non-responsive audio hardware!

I'd love a bit of help on this one, because my knowledge of computers' insidey bits is pretty poor.

Many thanks,

Joe.

In Windows XP, fully updated, I have several folders full of mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

But all the figures in the "Duration" column appear to be in "hours" and "minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03", but what I want is "minutes" and "seconds".

Any thoughts as to how to change this?

Hi and THANKS for being there! This is primarily a term definition question. I don't find any clear answer in my user's guide.

I've got this terrific TV card installed, very fancy, very feature-rich.

I've got this terrific add-on AGP card installed, very fancy, very feature-rich. But I'm thinking that's beside the point. (It's a nVidia Geforce FX 5200)

This TV Tuner/Capture card dates back a ways; bought it for my old Windows Millennium machine and I remember that it worked just GREAT. It has the brand name "Brooktree" but that might just be the chipset or something. Anyway, I abandoned the TV add-on when I upgraded to a newer Windows XP machine in early 2007. I couldn't find the right driver though it worked pretty fairly with the old driver for most TV stations, it didn't work perfectly. I ditched it at the time.

I recently visited driverguide.com and searched diligently and finally did find a perfect driver for that TV card for XP. I am sure it is the latest and best driver available, so that is not even an issue.

Since I no longer subscribe to cable, I can use this old card to watch only channel 3, as output by my VCR. (The card also has FM radio, which works great!)

Here's the thing. A very itty-bitty teensy slight snag. When I initiate the TV Tuner, it always starts up in what they call "Preview mode". There is sound but no picture! No problem, I just tell it to go into the alternate mode, "... Read more

That dxdiag "no sound card" message is misleading as I've found it says that if no driver OR sound card. I think you're missing the right driver

Also, it would seem from your post you have High Definition (HD) audio. Which means you'll need to find the right High Definition audio driver. (AC97 pre-dates HD audio so the Realtek AC97 couldn't be right)

Try starting on the HP support website HERE and enter your model number or they have a button where they'll try to identify your product and drivers for your model. They should list an HD audio driver there

It's a mole hill of a problem, but it is a bit annoying to have to click on my principal drive ("C") every time I'm doing a "save". I have enclosed an excerpt of a screen shot of my "save as" window to display how the default drive being automatically selected is the "D" drive rather than the "C" drive that I use primarily. To be honest, I don't know whether this can be corrected by a software change, or whether it's the way the two hard drives are connected in my computer.

I'd appreciate it if anyone has a suggestion to offer if there is a way to make my "C" drive the default selection when I attempt to do a save function. Thanks

I need to always display the default audio input and audio output device currently on win7.
Would like to launch a small program on change as well or instead.
I tried to use task scheduler but was not able.
Help!
Thanks,
Ray

A:need "always on top icon & msg for "default audio input/output device"

Do a search on this forum. I think someone found a program to basically do what you want.

However, I just created a shortcut on my desktop to the Sound Panel/Playback section where you can change default playback devices. Go to the Control Panel/Hardware and Sound. RIGHT Click on "Sound" and then click to create a shortcut.

The audio input is another issue. If you set the default Recording device to the Stereo Mix then whatever input is used will be heard. In recording programs, select the Stereo Mix as the input and then whatever input device/port is used will be recorded. e.g. Mic, Line In, etc. Also, the Stereo Mix is needed if you want to record audio from the Internet or sites such as youtube.

I am running Windows XP SP3, fully updated, on an Acer lap top PC.

I have several folders full of .mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. To do this I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

The two new columns appear, but the format of the "Duration" column appears to be "hours:minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03" for most .mp3's, when what I want to see is 'hours:minutes:seconds", e.g. "00:03:45".

This also happens for video files (.avi files), e.g. all my episodes of "Heroes" (sad, I know) have a duration of "00:42" instead of "00:42:xx".

Here are two pictures showing the problem with the .mp3's. The first is of Explorer showing the Duration as "Hours:Minutes":

The second picture is of the properties window of the first .mp3 in the list above:

I copied some .mp3 files to another (old) PC on my home network, and it displayed the duration field correctly:

Also, the properties window correctly shows the duration also:

I'm not the only person to have this problem. I received a private message from a member of another forum where I posted about this problem several weeks ago. That person also has the same problem with the duration field.

I Just had a log in error. I have a Dell Precision 7710 mobile work station with the Anniversary Update. I turned on the machine and tried to log in and got:

---------------
We can't sign into your account
This problem can often be fixed by signing out of your account, then signing back in. If you don't sign out now, any files that you create or changes that you make will be lost.
---------------

Logging out and restarting did not work. I shut it down, undocked (it is a Thunderbolt Cable Dock), and then restarted. Luckily it was back to normal log in. I shut down docked, and booted and it was normal log in again.
Not sure what happened. Hope the issue does not come back.

I read online this happened to others, but cannot find a cause or fix (other than restarting) and wondering if anyone knows why this happened.

thanks

Hi Everyone,

running into a little issue when deploying Windows 8.1 to a laptop with fingerprint software, not really an issue, more of a behavior I wish to fix up.

After deploying Windows 8.1 to the laptop, it is joined to the domain during SCCM deployment, the fingerprint software gets installed during SCCM deployment too. When it finishes and gets the lock screen/login screen it is defaulting to sign-in with Microsoft Account (Email address and Password field) Sign-in options below allow me to select domain/local account or Fingerprint option.

I want to be able to default to sign-in with domain/local account not Microsoft email account, is this possible? If I don't install the fingerprint software it defaults to sign-in option of domain/local user which is what I'm after.

Can you someone shed some lights onto this issue please?

Cheers
Max

PS. will throw up screen dumps of what is happening soon
