Fast computer then slow

Q: Fast computer then slow

Hi!
I have a problem with my computer... lately it's been pretty slow, however, I noticed it starts up quite quickly and works fine for a while, but about ten minutes or so after the boot it turns annoyingly slow up to the point that it almost takes an entire minute to open any window.
I've already tried everything. defragging, antivirus scan (in safe and normal mode), deactivating unnecessary start up process, making space in the drive, uninstalling programs i recently installed, Registry fix... but nothing works!
My OS is windows 7 ultimate, my CPU has an Asus motherboard and a AMD Sempron processor. 2GB ram and a 500 GB HDD with two partitions, one for the OS and one for my files. please help I don't know what else to do!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have a fast computer, yet, for some reason, with nearly nothing running, it bogs down to a crawl so windows don't even respond. I wait, and it's fine again for another 10 minutes, an hour, who knows. Then dead slow again.

It's driving me crazy, and I have no idea what to do to attempt fixing it.

I don't see anything in process explorer that could be the culprit.

Thoughts? Are there tools for scanning I should run?

Greetings,
Ive got a problem with my internet connection over a small network,
Ive got ntl cable broad band, which runs into a Draytech vigor broadband security router, hub thing. There is one other computer on the network which when on the net, flies, however the other machine is painfully slow.

I suspect it is something to do with my connection settings, perhaps it thinks it has 56k connection, but how do I configure or test my connection settings to go quickly?

The last time I used this machine on the net it was in a different country,
on a 56k modem and using dial up. Any thoughts?

Now, its slower then my older computer, which I thought was impossible. I mean...This is pathetic. I unistalled AVG cause there was a process running that is supposed to be a Trojan, and a program said AVG was running it. So, I deleted it, was prompted to restart, so I did. It took literally 10 minutes to shut down and restart. At worst, my old computer took 5 minutes. (P4 2.8, 1.5 gigs ram, ATI Radeon 9800). So, how do I fix this? I have a theory its Microsoft forcing people to upgrade by putting out crappy updates. I mean, for my card, the newest driver is dated the beginning of last year...They come out with a new one but its Vista only. Woo...idiots. So basically it started about 3 days ago, aprox. 4 days after this computer was built. I was playing Battlefield 1942, it froze. I tried 5 times, it froze in different spots at different times. I reinstalled. Same thing. Oblivion goes for about 30 minutes then crashes to the desktop. I then hit the window to maximize again, and it freezes. This has happened everytime as well. I also did older games, same thing, but done differently. Battlefield was the only one that froze the entire computer to where i had to manually shut it off. Then today I randomly check my processes, and theres 2 runn... Read more

The first thing which strikes me is that you have 2 anti-virus applications on your computer ( Zone Alarm security suite and AVG Free) Having two anti virus applications running on your PC can give conflicts so I suggest you uninstall one.For the antispyware applications do you have all real time protection enabled?..I first would try Microsoft online test and see what comes up. The freezing can also indicate faulty memory, there for run a Memtest to rule that out.

I have a Dell optiplex, that I have redone the operating sys in. I run win xp. In the process of putting all my programs back on, I added a new recording prog.. I dont think that changed anything, but now my camera barely records without stopping, fine for a min then just almost freezes. Ive run virus check, defrag, Task manager, and nothing. Comp. is slow now. I know its fast, it was before. The camera is slow and the playback on tracks while im trying to record within my other program is slow and cuts out as well. Its almost like the sound slows it down.
Please help me get my computer back the way it was, and know it can be. Thanx.

Chris.

A:fast computer now slow.

Please post your full computer specs.

Also I would find out what brand your harddrive is and go to the manufacture website to download a diagnostic program to make sure its not on its way out. Since you apparently already reinstalled windows (Recently?) and you say its still slow I would check for a possible hardware issue.

I recently sent my computer back to the factory for a problem with it randomly turning off while playing games. They replaced the video card and maybe the motherboard and reformatted the computer and sent it back. Ever since, it has been really choppy. The choppiness is barely noticeable when you're just sitting there (in the game), but once you start running around and monsters start popping out at you, it gets really bad, and I know it shouldn't because my computer before I sent it in, ran the games perfectly.

My Computer:
Windows XP Home
Intel Pentium 4 3.2GHz
1GB RAM
ATI Radeon 9550 128MB DDR

Some games:
Warcraft III
Grand Theft Auto III San Andreas
F.E.A.R.

I've already updated all my drivers, downloaded the newer versions of the games, and made sure not too many things are running in the background. Is there a solution short of reformatting my computer?

My laptop runs fast sometimes, and sometimes slow. When it runs fast, the internet automatically configures in the beginning of the startup and everything is smooth. When it is slow, it takes a while for everything to configure during start up. I do not think I have any malware, I have scanned and nothing was found. I have tried to do a defrag, but i only had 4% space available while it needs at least 15%, and it didn't free much space up when i defraged. I have used programs to manage the start up, I honestly just don't know what the problem is...
Any help would be wonderful!

A:Fast/Slow Computer

Part of the problem can be the lack of swap space on the hdd. There are two suggestions that I can make, the first would be to purchase a second hdd and transfer enough of your files to regain adequate free space. The other is to transfer files to removable madia, CD, DVD, flash drive... for the same reason. You should have your important files backed up in this manner anyway.Edit: Please use the following link to provide us with information about your computer so that we can assist you.How to Publish a Snapshot using Speccy The below is for those who cannot get online with the computer Speccy was run on.Please take caution when attaching a text file to your post if you cannot copy/paste the link to your post, you will need to edit it to make sure that your Windows Key is not present.

Hey! I'm new to the forums here and I've been looking around for an answer as to why my computer, which should be running nice and fast, is just so lagging and slow, but I can't seem to find a specific answer. I just purchased a Dell Optiplex 320 with a Pentium D 925 3.00 GHz Dual Core. I upgraded the 1gb ram to 4gb just recently. Also I figured I'd upgrade to Windows 7 Ultimate (x64) because the computer came with Windows XP Pro (x32). As I've stated, even with the dual core and 4gb of ram, the computer is so laggy and takes forever to load programs, start Windows, and it had slow responsiveness to mouse clicks/scrolls. I would figure with the specs it should run Win 7 64-bit nicely. Even before I upgraded to Win 7, Xp Pro ran very slow also when I first got the computer. I have another computer with Win 7 Ult and its got an Athlon II X2 215 Dual Core 2.75 GHz w/ 1.5gb ram and it runs programs and Windows almost instantly compared to my new computer and it runs much more smooth. Just as a note, came with a 160gb SATA HDD and I added another 200gb SATA HDD.Here is the HijackThis log file: Running processes:C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamgui.exeC:\Program Files (x86)\DAEMON Tools Pro\DTShellHlp.exeC:\Program Files (x86)\VSO\ConvertX\4\ConvertXtoDvd.exeC:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre6\bin\javaw.exeC:\Program Files (x86)\VSO\ConvertX&#... Usually with a system like this I can get boot times of 45 secs or less. It was booting faster. I did a bios update and it seemed to slow down. I backed the update down one level and it helped a bit but still slow. I was having problems with the windows hardware driver for the onboard lan. Found a better driver from the motherboard site and that took care of the lan. The board is a Asus m3a78-emh hdmi. The memory is kingston ddr2 pc6400. Clean install of windows xp. There is not a lot of programs on it. There is 31 processes running. This computer has onboard video but it is using a power color Radeon X800 gto 16 pci express video card. I don't know if this belongs here or not.

Ok I posted her a few weeks ago about my father's computer having a virus called a "Downloader" but no one helped me. So I tried and clear things up myself by surfing the web. I thought I cleared up everything but bam now it seems like a virus has come back into the picture now.

My father has a desktop HP Pavilian XT963 with an Intel Celeron 1200 MHZ, 128 RAM memory, and the OS is Windows XP SP2. I start the computer and it takes about 10-12 minutes to start up and get all the programs up. That happens and we just wait. I was backing up some cds onto the harddrive (It's a 32 GB harddrive and has 23gbs free currently). I am doing this on iTunes and I get a message saying "no available memory can't save this". This has happened on three occassions. Is it a virus issue or memory issue? I don't know. I am beyond confused and frustrated. So any help will be greatly appreciated.

Several days ago my new computer with Win8 started behaving slowly and sometimes freezes. While using the internet (I have Firefox) and another program it sometimes becomes unresponsive and I can not move my mouse or press any buttons. Then I have to manually pull the plug and take out the battery and then restart the computer again and it becomes normal. I never had this problem before though. That is the only problem. I scanned the entire system with McAfee and Stinger McAfee product but both scans turned out clean. I also installed updates. I wonder maybe McAfee is missing something that another program might detect.

Also several months ago two viruses were found on my computer, both of which were taken care of by McAfee. Maybe they were only partially destroyed?

From the moment I press the button until my windows xp pro is fully loaded and ready, it took my computer one minute and 52 seconds, is that fast or slow?

A:Is My Computer Starting Fast Or Slow?

It depends on what is starting up along with Windows. If you want a bunch of programs starting, then it is going to take a while. But if you are asking how to start your computer faster, then we can investigate a few things, such as what programs are starting, as well as your system stats to see if they can be improved. Another thing that can slow down a computer is a virus or other malware infection (but this is sort of related to what I said first regarding programs starting, just that it is possible that some are malicious and unwanted).

Do you care to investigate further?

I have a Powerspec with a cable modem and Windows XP. A couple of weeks ago, after 6 months of no problems, my computer started operating excruciatingly slow. It would take forever to load up pages, would force me to left click on pages several times before they would even begin to load up, etc. I ran virus scans and spyware and didn't pick up anything. Still the slow computer remained. I finally tried System Restore, as I just wanted my fast connection back. Same thing. Finally, after a few days, I totally lost connection to the internet and was getting the generic 169 (I think?) IP address when I checked to see what it was sending to the modem. I took my computer in to where I purchased it, and they had no problems surfing the web. I had contacted the cable company that I got the modem from and they did not see any problems with the modem from their end. However, I convinced them that I wanted to try a new one and picked one up from their offices the next day.

Sure enough, the internet was fantastic with this new modem. Fast, no problems, etc. Now, however, after a couple of weeks, the same problem has crept up. Surfing the internet has become an excruciating process. I check the task manager, but it does not appear that any processes are running behind the scenes (although thats what it seems like is happening). I disabled all anti-virus. I again checked for spyware and adware and came up clean.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I run a long 15 foot piece of cable... Read more

A:Fast Modem. Slow Computer?

This one is a real poser - that's for sure!

Replacing the cable is one option - but I just can't see a piece of cable causing problems like this.

It seems to me that this is a problem with your networking protocols - so you might want to try deleting the current connection and creating a new one from scratch (using the Wizard).

My dad is running XP and I'm running Vista. I have a DSL router on my PC, he has an adapter. Loading pages is fast, but when it comes to downloading, there's a significant difference. My dad's... plain and simple, is really, really fast. It takes him a minute to download say...20GB, and for me it takes hours, and then it terminates in the middle of it. According to Safari and Firefox, mine goes at about 10KB a second.

In general, what makes a computer slow? Considering its not any form of malware or having too many stuff installed.
By slow I mean, e.g., when youre playing a game and it takes a long time to switch to another window.

When I hear about it, RAM and processor are the first things that come to my mind, just from what I can remember people saying (I think?), but what could also be the reason for this? What needs to be upgraded to improve that? And can it improve when you upgrade only one of the components, or would you need to upgrade more than just one (could one of them be stopping the other one)?

Yes, it may be a total newbie question... Im a total newbie, upgrading my computer for the first time and I would like to understand how it works, at least a bit of it.

I just got a new computer, and it's insanely slow loading websites. Sometimes it does not load them at all, and gives me the button I can click on to diagnose connection problems. However, it doesn't find anything when I click the button.

Anyways, I'm using Windows 7 Home Premium, and I'm on a desktop connecting to a wireless network with a usb card for PCs. I double-checked before buying it to make sure it was compatible with windows 7....And it seems to be working just fine.

Anyways, when I right-click the connection and click on Status, and then hit the Diagnose button, I get different messages almost every time.

Here's what I get sometimes:

Problems found: The default gateway is not available. Fixed.

Other times, I get:

Troubleshooting couldn't identify the problem.

But most of the time, I get:

Your computer appears to be correctly configured, but the device or resource (DNS server) is not responding.

Any ideas on how to fix this?

I'm using a 802.11 USB Wireless LAN Card (manufacturer: Ralink Tech.), and I installed the update for it that was recommended in Windows Updates (and my Windows is up-to-date).

Here are the model numbers I found on the devices that connect me to the wireless network (I know nothing about computers, so sorry, I don't know what they are called): Motorola SURFboard model SB5100 and Linksys WRT54GS.

Let me know if you need any more info, and any help would be very much appreciated .

My neighbor is with Time Warner Internet and his speed averages around 16 mbps. Yet, when he tries to open a webpage or click on links, seems to take a long time to open, like over 2 minutes at times. His computer is maintained using CCleaner, Registry cleaner, MalwareBytes, Auslogic Defrag Prog., Registry Defrag and the Startup File, msconfig, only has 4 items checked off. He uses Avast as his anti-virus and that is clean. What would cause his computer to run slow considering his Internet speed being faster than normal? He uses Windows 7, with 4 GB ram and a 500 GB hard drive. He maintains his computer with the above mentioned programs at least every other week if not every week. Any comments will be appreciated. Thanks.

A:Fast Internet, slow functioning computer.

What % of CPU is being used when idle, and what % when accessing a web page? Because of all the programs you listed, I am guessing he has a lot of them running at the same time, probably slowing it down.

I recently bought a new computer which is around 3 months old. Here is some info about this computer:

Windows 8
Processor: AMD FX(tm)-6100 Six-Core Processor 3.30GHz
Installed memory (Ram): 8.00GB
System Type: 64-bit operating system
Graphics Card: AMD Radeon HD 7700 Series

In the first month, I noticed that the headphone jack does not work correctly. When I put my headphones in it would not shut off the speakers on my monitor. Sometimes I will lower the volume a little, but never completely shut it off. Also sometimes the headphones will receive no sound unless I twist it around to get a good position. Another thing is when my computer goes to sleep, upon coming back to the computer, sometimes my flash will crash if I had any videos opened on my browser and the browser would freeze for about two mins. These two minor problems but I am unsure if it is related to my other problem.

At about two months, I noticed a minor problem when I was trying to adjust the volume through the taskbar. When clicking the Volume icon, it would take about 5-10 seconds before the Volume slider actually popped up. However, it was only the Volume icon that did this, as clicking the Networking icon or Action Center would get an instant response. This might be stupid, but the only thing I noticed was that every time it happened, I had my headphones plugged in. Since I had the problem with the headphones already, I decided this volume adjuster was somehow linked to that, so I "solved" the... Read more

On my new computer the download speed (broadband) is the crawl of 0.81Mb/sec.using speedtest.net. At the time of test the computer was doing no 'work'. I noticed this slowness when downloading a driver update which was at .89Mb/sec.
Another time when downloading a program it was at .196Mb/sec. Now it is a consistent 0.81 Mbps.

At the same time of the test on three other computers all using the same tester, the same ISP, the same router, the same telephone line in the same house the speed is 2.01Mb/sec. which is the usual speed here.

The fact that they all use XP and have differing hardware should make no difference I think - if I'm wrong I can supply those details. This new computer has a much higher specification than the others but again would this make a difference?

I have done virus and malware scans.

Can anyone explain what could be causing this and how I can fix this please? I can't think of any other relevant info to include at this point.

A:Slow download speed on 1 computer fast on others?

Concentrate on the link between your computer and the router. Replace the cable if it is a wired connection. Use the cable from one of the working systems to test. Also use the same port as one of the fast systems.

If no change, swap the network card or check for updated drivers or chipset drivers if the ethernet connector is on the mainboard
Your router may also have QOS settings that give priority to one or more computers based on ip or MAC address.

Are all the computers wired connections?

Good morning,
About every 5 or 6 days my computer will be crippling slow until I restart it, and then it will be fine again. It doesn't appear to start fast and slowly get slower, it just happens. I also use Windows Media Center a lot and that always is slow when I first start it, but then it gets better after it's been running for a few minutes. I have Avast! Antivirus and Malwarebytes for spyware and antivirus. Windows update and my antivirus and spyware programs are up to date. I have also noticed that svchost and CAPTUR~3.EXE take up a large amount of memory. svchost @ 93,000 K with many more ranging from 20,000 K to 3,000 K, and CAPTURE~3.EXE @ 103,000 K. I have Windows 7 Ultimate x64. While reading other threads I realized that it's not good practice to use MSConfig and disable startup programs that way, and that's how I managed everything at startup.

To help figure out if there was something wrong I downloaded HijackThis. Below is the log file from the scan, and attached is a screenshot of Windows Task Manager. Any ideas?

Hi, I have one computer with two accounts. The account with admin rights have a normal connection and the other with the standard rights have slow connection. I don't know why but it started a couple of days ago when the internet on the standard account slows down dramatically, where it almost seem like it crashed. The browser (Mozilla) is unresponsive but loading. This does not happen on the admin account. It load the websites like Youtube after a minute or two of freezing. I tried giving the standard one admin rights and this doesn't seem to fix the problem. I suspect it to be a virus but I cannot find anything with Norton. Help please.

A:One computer with two accounts; one has slow internet and the other is fast.

You could try removing Norton and going with Avast or Microsoft's antivirus. Norton always seems to do more harm than good and whenever I remove it from PCs they always feel faster and more responsive. Norton is over-protective when browsing so that is probably whats slowing you down.

I also just recently got a new ISP, the speed is up to 18mbps.
My laptops are all connected through wireless and are getting anywhere between 15-18mbps while my desktop which is connected with an ethernet cable is getting around 6-7mbps.
I have all the latest drivers and did scans with Bitdefender and Advanced System Care and there were no problems with viruses/malware/etc.
Also, I'm not running any bandwidth consuming programs (uTorrent, etc).
I have 8GB of RAM, Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit.

Well, i think its fast enough for what i need. I have recently started disabling some processes in the Startup tab in msconfig, only ones that i am sure i don't need. Being relatively new to troubleshooting this myself I am hoping someone can help.

There is a process running called csrss.exe that I think may be malware linked to a service running called 'ASP.Net State Service' from what i have read, but i don't want to disable or delete anything, for obvious reasons.

I have also read that the File Indexing Service can chew up a lot of resources. Basically the Startup is frustratingly slow and usually takes up to 4-5 mins until it is ready to respond to mouse clicks.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

My computer has been running slow for months just getting worse. I have to reboot to unfreeze it. 3 days ago I ran a scan with a free programs it said I had over 3000 problems. Late at night something flashes across my screen called preato so I went to add remove programs but when it came up I waited for it to load the programs but it never did it stayed blank. I used an old program I love called go back by Norton and then it showed the programs but the preato did not come up. Trying to get the info you ask us to get before contacting you my computer rebooted itself 3 times and I had to reboot it 4 times myself. i tried to get the gmer report but it ran for 30 mins and shut down the computer then when i brought it back up i cannot get it to run again it freezes up and i have to reboot. Please help me I am disabled and have not left my house since Katrina in 2005 so this is my only contact with people and I cannot afford to buy a new one. Thanks in advance…Dianne Brown

Hi Tech Guys,

I received a new Windows 7 computer yesterday and am having major performance problems surfing and downloading from the web.

I have 3 other boxes, XP, Vista and Windows 7 and they have no problem only the new box.

I hardwired the box to the router and saw throughput of 40Mbps. I connected a USB network adapter to the box and was also able to get speeds of 40Mbps when I was close to the router. Being close or far from the router using the on board wireless made no difference throughput was only 250Kbps.

I've download and installed the latest driver for the network card and upgraded to the latest firmware on the router but the problem still persists.

The router is a Linksys WRT160N V1.0
The network card is an Ralink RT3090 WLAN card

The box is an Acer AX3400.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Mike

hi guys,

this happen to all my clients, i'm using Win2003 as my server, and i set only a Group Policy, which is "set all the local administrator password to be the same with the domain admin" <only 1Kb in size>

but i don't know why, all the clients takes up to 2-3 minutes to go to the ctrl+alt+del screen.

no virus or spyware detected by symantec

A:fast at startup but extremely slow at applying computer settings

i also has set the client's XP to best performance. and processor to do the service more than the program. but still takes 2-3minutes at applying the computer setting.

Hi, I would like to apologize in advance if this is a somewhat generic question.

I've had this computer (laptop) for several years now, and the computer became slower and slower until we decided that it was unusable and bought a new laptop.

However, I've turned on this computer on just for spite and discovered that it works perfectly fine in safe mode.

I've reinstalled windows XP, but although reinstalling xp helped for a little bit, the computer slowed down quickly in a few days.

What could be the reason the computer is so slow outside of safe mode?

P.S. I've trasferred some ram from another laptop onto this one, which was recognized by the computer and ran fine. I'm not sure if that could be the issue.

Thanks!

A:Computer is very slow in normal settings but fast in safe mode

A LOT many issues could cause a slow computer.
Check out this elaborate BC post which addresses almost all the issues. Once you have gone through the checklist and still have issues feel free to post back here. Let me know if you need help with any of the steps.

Thanks

Hello, I am using a Dell XPS M1330. Recently I did a clean install of my OS (Vista 32-bit). Before the install my computer was running fast and drivers were all working and whatnot. But after the clean install I am plagued with problems. Specifically,

1. Computer Start-up takes ages, and while booting after the initial load screen there is a pause where there just shows the basic windows background with nothing on the screen (background is not my set desktop) for about 30 seconds before continuing to load windows and desktop.

2. After clean install my computer is right off the bat super super slow. Running even one program, such as the internet is difficult and the pages open super slow. Windows explorer files open so slow that I can see them open in slow motion, from top to bottom. Before the OS reinstallation this was not a problem and my computer could run many programs at once at high speeds as it is supposed to do. I have tried updating drivers which doesnt seem to help at all.

3. I have an NVIDIA 8400m gs Graphics card, but after the clean install I am not able to update the card to the latest drivers from the manufacturers website. The installation seems to be going fine until it fails randomly.

3. The M1330 is known to have overheating problems, so I use a program called I8kfanGUI to force the fan to high speed. But since the clean install, the program will not connect to the fan to speed it up. In fact, the fan doesn't seem to speed up at all even when the c... Read more

A:Computer went from fast to SUPER slow & other problems after reinstalling OS (Vista)

appears you may have a auto bios reset so suggest you access bios to see especially if you have saved a bios configuration

re start up start type msconfig enter look at start up tab , with a dell especially you may well see numerous programmes starting with windows, remove all to do a clean boot

for the graphics suggest remove old drivers re boot then reinstall from your saved installer

its possible that after a new installation your disc is fragmented very badly
