OptiPlex 760 Desktop: DisplayPort and PCIe Audio

Q: OptiPlex 760 Desktop: DisplayPort and PCIe Audio

Good evening,
today I bought myself a display port cable to finally replace my old VGA monitor. In the PCIe slot I have added a SoundBlaster card. While using the VGA output everything worked perfectly, but now, while using the DisplayPort, the system won't boot and shows the old "Unsupported Configuration Detected" screen (only when I add the VGA monitor while having DP and Soundcard plugged in). With the soundcard removed the display port works perfectly.
I already tried the BIOS function to override the Auto video, but that didn't help. I have the feeling something tells the computer the SoundBlaster is a graphics card, but of course, it isn't.
As I said, using the integrated graphics with VGA works perfectly with and without the soundcard. I updated both the audio and video drivers. My BIOS is the latest one for my system (A16).

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I need to connect an Optiplex 790 to a monitor that only takes HDMI input. The cheapest DPort-HDMI cable I can find says it's a "Passive Converter Cable", and that it requires a Dual-mode DisplayPort (DP++) source. I can't find anywhere in the Optiplex 790 specs whether its DisplayPort output is DP++, so I thought I'd ask here. Will this cable work?

Hi All
I purchased an Optiplex 3020M which has VGA on the back and DisplayPort. I purchased a DisplayPort to HDMI cable and plugged it into my monitor and powered on the unit. Nothing was displayed on the monitor. When I connect with VGA, I get an output.
Having a poke around the Intel graphics driver, I couldn't see anything about DisplayPort. I also checked in the BIOS but nothing.
When I opened the hardware diagnostics and clicked on video, it tells me that HDMI and DisplayPort 'board' are not installed. This confused me somewhat as the device has a DisplayPort port on the back (see photo).
When I opened it up, it seems that there is an empty connection on the motherboard. Does this mean using DisplayPort is not an option on my device? This would be a shame as I wanted to do audio over DisplayPort to HDMI. I find it odd that it should include this port if it is not usable.
Thanks in advance.

Hello I have an Optiplex 960 with 2 monitors connected, one per vga and one per displayport. When the display with the displayport adapter to vga connected to the monitor, the pc does not start. It's like I'm in suspension. Then when unplugging the pc starts and if I connect the adapter with the pc turned on it gives video to the second monitor. The funny thing that this went perfectly until we changed the disk for a ssd disk. I installed all the drivers but it keeps happening to me.
Thank you

Hi, I have two optiplex 7010, with:
319-0914 : 3rd Gen Intel Core i5-3570 Pro cessor (6MB, 3.4GHz) w/HD2500 Graphics, Dell Optiplex 7010
No aditional video card, just de embeded intel hd2500.

The problem is, that Im trying to use the Display port instead of standard VGA cable, but, If I connec the display port to my monitor (display port input) no signal is detected in my monitor. I have tried the two different display ports on my dell, but no signal is detected on my monitor, so I need to use vga port.

I have this problem with two different optiplex 7010 that i own, one with windows 7, and the other one with windows 10.
I run the self diagnostics, but no problem is detected.
I appreciate your help.

I have taken advice and got a actv. display port to HDMI adapter. I've plugged the HDMI cable into TV. What happens is the desktop screen appears on TV but not exactly as it does on VDU at the same time- some icons (Google Earth etc) which are on the screen rather than small icons in bottom bar are not there. And then nothing else happens: no google home page or anything- just the desktop. When I turn off computer the desktop on TV goes away, so some signal is getting through.

I need some tech support on this computer/monitor combo…
I have the one monitor hooked up display port-displayport, it works fine.  The second monitor is hooked up monitor-DELL display port-hdmi adaptor, then HDMI cable to HDMI port on computer.  Computer sees the display port monitor only.  both monitors are set to monitor the display port .  Let me know asap, thanks..

I have the dual Dell displays, they only have Displayport and maybe DVI connectors...  brand new Optiplex 3040, had display port and Hdmi ports for video, need them both active at the same time to run the dual display...... OR does dell make an adaptor to run its dual display from one display port?

A:Dell Optiplex 3040 cannot use both HDMI port and Displayport at same time?

Optiplex 3040 onboard video out ports = HDMI, DP
A computer HDMI out port cannot up convert to a monitor DP in port via a straight cable. What you bought is designed to do the opposite; down convert a computer DP out to a monitor HDMI in port.
You would need to add an HDMI to DP Active Converter.
Computer HDMI out --> HDMI to HDMI cable --> HDMI in to DP out converter --> DP to DP cable --> Monitor DP in

Prior to Feb 23, 2017, there was sound through internal speakers and also when I plug in external speakers.
Starting Feb 23, 2017, there is no sound with Dell Optiplex 780 desktop computer (small form factor) with Windows 10
ie no system sounds
ie when I use vlc media player, no sound
When I use Windows Media Player, it says "encountered a problem while playing the file."
When I use vlc player, it opens the audio file, advances the time elapsed, but the speakers are silent
I updated Windows.
I ran Windows diagnostics.
Windows diagnostics detected conflict with sound card enhancements, so I disabled them, then rebooted.
I uninstalled the only recent Windows update, which was Feb. 21 windows update of Adobe Flash player.  I re-booted.
I ran AVG anti-virus and Malwarebytes.
I am trying to run on dell.com the online diagnosis, but it is stuck.

I downloaded Dell System Detect and installed it.  It is running, and appears in the system tray.
The I selected a sound card test.
However, the process is stuck at step 2. Install System Detect

I have a refurbished Optiplex 780 Desktop with the single PCIE slot occupied by a video graphics card.  I would like to use the on-board video and replace the graphics card with a PCIE USB 3.0 host card.
All the posts I can find about using this PCIE slot are concerned with using it for another video card or as a second video card while using on-board video, and in most cases it seems that this cannot be done because it creates a boot problem.
I am not a gamer or designer, so plain vanilla video is fine, but I do not know if ANY card in the PCIE slot causes problems, or only a VIDEO card in the PCIE slot.
Can someone tell me the answer, and, if it is possible, how to do it?
Thank you,

Hello, I have some Optilex XE's that I'm setting up and would like to know what Wifi Cards are compatible with the internal PCIE 2x slot.  It appears to be locked down to a specific card.  When I put a Wifi card in there, it comes up as Unknown in the BIOS, and the OS doesn't see it.  When I move the card to SLOT1, the PCIE x16 slot, it works and the OS can see it.  Searching support with the service tag comes up with nothing useful.  Also please note, this is not a mini port, it's a regular 2x port.  So a mini pcie card will not work.  -Matt

A:Optiplex XE PCIE Slot 6

What form factor?
The manual says it's a PCI-e x1 slot not "2x" that you indicated. So if you're actually using an x2 card, it's not going to work.
And the bus is only PCI Express 1.1, so any x1 card has be backward compatible with PCi-e 1.1, if that's possible.
What about using a USB WiFi dongle?

About a month ago I bought 2 Dell Optiplex 760 MTs. Both systems are exactly the same in every way and work very well.  Both have the latest A16 BIOS and all the latest drivers from Dell installed.
Last week, I bought a Dodocool 2-port USB 3.0 PCIe expansion card and it works on both Optiplex 760 PCs when placed in either the PCIe x1 or x16 slots.  HOWEVER...
On only one of the systems, it's a hit or miss as to whether the BIOS detects the card from a cold start up (the BIOS detects all the PCIe slots, just sometimes not this particular card - it will just show "empty", when it should say "USB").
As a result, if the BIOS doesn't detect the card, then it's not available in Windows when Windows loads in. Therefore, when I start the PC, I always have to enter the BIOS to see if the card is detected before windows boots.
If BIOS shows the card I just exit the BIOS and let the PC boot into Windows and all is fine.
But if the BIOS doesn't detect the card, I have to exit the BIOS, push the power button on the tower to shut the system off, then power on again and re-enter the BIOS and find that the card is recognized (sometimes might take 2 or 3 tries but many times only one try is sufficient).
It never happens if I simply do a restart from the OS. On a restart, the BIOS always remembers/sees/detects the card. It only happens if I do a shutdown and have to power-up the system using the power button on the tower.
This problem happens only ... Read more

I use a Dell OptiPlex 755 Small Form Factor computer in my bedroom, and it works great for most things. Though I want to give it a nudge in graphics. But I also don't want to buy a graphics card that won't fit inside the computer. I know I'll need a low profile graphics card. So my questions is, what is the maximum dimensions for a PCIe graphics card in a Dell OptiPlex 755 Small Form Factor.

A:Maximum Dimensions for Installing a PCIe Graphics Card in a Dell OptiPlex 755 Small Form Factor

I don't know what the maximum dimensions are, but they are tight and you are limited by the power supply. Bearing that in mind, the Sapphire 6450 is a good choice.

I have a problem and hope someone might know what`s wrong.

When I play any pcgame sound stops working after 5 to 10 minutes,
but only when I use a DP Cable, with HDMI it works fine.
Movies and music work fine with either cable.

it`s actually not a huge problem, I just have to change plugs if I want to use my PS4, or buy a headphone cable extension. But maybe someone has the solution on hand.

Does anyone have a definitive answer about whether the DisplayPort in this desktop supports audio?  This machine has the default embedded Intel grahpics adapter.   I'm using an HDMI converter cable that works fine with my laptop so I know the cable is good. A DisplayPort with the "++" symbol is supposed to support audio and the 8000 desktop does indeed show the "++" symbol but I do not get audio.  The audio system settings don't show anything other than headphone and speakers.  I have an HP Elitebook 2540P notebook that also has the DisplayPort with the "++" symbol and it works perfectly.  In addition to headphone and speakers, "HDMI" shows up in the sound settings. I tried to find some specs on the Intel website but I'm not sure what video adapter this is.  HP says "4500"  but it looks like it's part of the "series 4" chipset on the Intel website. Thanks for any help!

yes your HDMI port can handle signals Audio.

Connect with you HDMI port, then the audio settings in the computer need to be adjusted. Click "Start" then "Control Panel" and "Hardware and Sound." Click "Manage Audio Devices," then click on the HDMI audio device in the list. Click the "Set as Default" button at the bottom of the window then click "OK." I'm using a new ThinkCentre M720t as a home media server, primarily for high-quality audio streaming but could in the future be used for video.  I decided to add a Soundblaster Audigy RX 7.1 PCIe card to the system because it has an optical audio out connector (SPDIF/TOSLINK).  The sound quality is terrible; I'm getting a lot of static in the soundtrack.  This is true whether using the analog audio output or the TOSLINK connector which is suprising as the TOSLINK is just passing through digitally stored audio.  Anyway, this seems to be a known complaint with the card. So then I got to thinking:  Could I just use the Displayport connector from the motherboard as the audio output channel?  I can plug a Displayport-to-HDMI adapter cable into my home theater receiver, ignore the non-existing video info, and just listen to the audio.  Question:  Does the Lenovo M720t deliver the audio via this connection?  Any experience with configuring this?

Assuming your monitor has speakers and you want to play sound through them, you have to set "Playback Devices" to the nVidia HDMI device that connects to your speakers (i.e. your monitor is shown as the connected device).
Right-click on the speaker icon in the system tray and select "Playbackevices" to get the dialog. The miniDP connector is considered "HDMI" in the dialog for device selection.

I use a miniDP->DP cable, since my Eizo monitor has DP but not HDMI.  But it does have speakers.  And DP, like HDMI, carries both audio and video.
Note that I do not use internal HD graphics, nor do I use Optimus. I have "discrete graphics" selected in the BIOS and Optimus disabled.  I also have the latest 332.50 nVidia driver installed, not the Lenovo Optimus driver, for my K1000M.

Greetings everyone!

This is my very first post and I come with a question. I am looking into purchasing a refurb Dell 990 SFF for basic home usage (spreadsheets, word processing, internet...no gaming or graphic/audio intensive use). The onboard graphics and Displayport is an integrated Intel HD Graphics 2000 with a Displayport 1.1a output. I currently have a monitor with Displayport in but no Displayport out so I can daisy-chain. What is the best strategy for connecting second monitor? Is the native DP 1.1a out splittable for extended desktop? Do I need to buy a DP splitter external peripheral? I should note the additional output options include an old VGA out; all USBs are 2.o. Thanks in advance.

Figured out how to get mini-displayport audio to work with the HP monitor (I have a Macbook Air)In addition to selecting the HP Monitor as the audio output in SYSTEM PREFERENCES--->SOUND-->OUTPUT-->HP ENVY 32 An adjustment also needs to be made to the AUDIO MIDI SETUP.  you can either do a search for it in the finder, or it is in APPLICATIONS -->UTILITIES-->Audio MIDI SetupOpen the AppSelect DisplayPort in the left menuUnder format...change to 48000.0Hz  2ch-24bit integerOnce changed you should be hearing audio from your monitor.Good luck.

My mother board only has one pcie x 16 slot available, id like to have more so i can add a few etension cards while also using my gpu. I have seen a few setups for mining that have multiple gpu's on a backplane that then connects to motherboard with a cable and a pcie card. is it possible to plug something into my existing pcie x 16 slot that would either split into 2 more pcie x 16 slots or even connect to another card that has additional slots.... to put it planely is there any way to get more the 1 pcie x 16 slot onto a motherboard that only has 1 existing. i want to add a usb 3.1 expansion card and run my gpu rx 460 at the same time??? my dinosaur of a system is a biostar n68s3b mobo with a rx 460.... also any way maybe i can use the pci (white) slots for any cards for example a usb 3.1?? Thank for your time and insight.... Rob

I need to upgrade my audio to a pcie card but it has a 4-pin molex connection.  I can only see 1 plug free, and it's not 4-pin molex.  Do you have a recommendation for what to do?  Thank you!

If what you seeing is a SATA power plug, then this should do the trickhttps://www.amazon.com/15-Pin-Female-Splitter-Manhattan-308977/dp/B002LBROAA/ref=pd_lpo_147_tr_img_3...
