Can't access System Properties, window flashes closed Shadow volume?

Q: Can't access System Properties, window flashes closed Shadow volume?

HP Pavilion dv7
Home Premium 64
Bought January 2009
not sure if I have Vista update2, can't access System Properties to find out.

My issues started last night. I noticed that my Sidebar was showing but nothing was in it. I went to properties and there were no gadgets listed. I tried downloading a *new* gadget but it wouldn't load. I restored my computer to 3 days ago. Still had the same problem.

I also realized today that I have no access to Admin functions. I can't right click my Computer icon and access system properties. I can't get the update Windows icon to check or update my windows. I can't access "User Groups" from the control panel.

Also I have been getting two error messages consistently:

The Volume Shadow Copy service used by System Restore is not working. For more information view the event log.(0x81000202)

Please close System Restore and try again.
AND

MMC cannot open file c:\Windows\System32\CompMgmt.msc
I did go to the run window and ran the following:

net user administrator /active:yes

I restarted and the Admin account loaded. HOWEVER, when I went to see the sidebar, again it was empty *and* I had no access to system functions.

I am at a complete loss as to what to do. I noticed that the computer has some of the symptoms of the Conficker virus but I have a good protector and I scanned my system and it said it was virus free...

That is at least enough information to get started... Thank you in advance for any help you can offer... short of reinstalling Vista I am out of ideas.

Preferred Solution: Can't access System Properties, window flashes closed Shadow volume?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

The above error message shows up shortly after bootup.
Other symptoms are System Restore and Backup and Restore fail. When manually creating a System Restore Point, the failure message is:  “The restore point could not be created for the following reason:  The Remote Procedure Call failed  0x800706BE”.

Also, two windows updates fail to install, even when attempted separately, they are:  KB2957689 and KB2808679 with an error code of “8E5E03FA Windows encountered unknown errors”.

What I have done so far:

In Services, I checked “Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider”. It was stopped and set to Manual. I set it to Automatic and Started. I did the same for “Volume Shadow Copy”. In this case, the service started but stopped with the same above error after about 10 seconds. The dependencies for both services are the same:  “Remote Procedure Call (RPC)” and “DCOM Server Process Launcher”. I checked both and found them set to Automatic and were already Started.

In Msconfig, I found nothing unchecked in Startup or Services.

At the command prompt I performed “sfc /scannow”. It produced a report indicating it found errors but I do not know how to read the file. I have the almost 3MB CBS.log file available. There is a possibility it could not correct all errors.

A:system restore and volume shadow copy

The Volume Shadow Service (VSS), sometimes referred to as Volume Shadow Copy or Volume Snapshot Service, is a service that allows you to restore certain system files to an earlier point in time. VSS creates most of the files it needs in the System Volume Information Folder which can be found on the root of each volume. This folder is locally accessed by System Restore when reverting to an entire previous set of shadow copies called Restore points. When the system needs to be restored, files and settings are copied from the shadow copy to the live volume used by Windows 7 (and Vista). Volume Shadow Copy is a service that creates and maintains snapshots (shadow copies) of disk volumes in Windows 7 and Vista. It is the back-end of the System Restore feature, which enables you to restore your system files to a previous state in case of a system failure (e.g. after a failed driver or software installation). What you should know about Volume Shadow Copy/System Restore in Windows 7 & Vista (FAQ)Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider in Windows 7System Restore and Shadow CopyHow Volume Shadow Copy Service Works

A:Error 5 (access denied) when starting Volume Shadow Copy service (VSS)

Just writing an update to say I managed to solve the problem by turning off my AV completely before starting the service and it worked (I obviously changed it back to manual once it started)!

Annoyingly, I had actually already tried this before by turning off individual components of my AV at a time (eg firewall), but for some reason had overlooked trying to turn the whole thing off...

Out of interest, does anyone have any idea what in the AV (KIS 2015) would be blocking VSS from starting suddenly (I haven't changed any of its settings from before the issue arose)?

Hi all,

I got me an Acer Iconica w3..... New little 8 inch tablet.
Setup like any other machine.  Connected to my Windows home server or Windows Server 2012 essentials.  Tried to run a backup using the server connector.  Backup failed with the subject VSS error in the application logs.  I also tried
the built in backup Windows 8 backup under control panel labeled Windows 7 File history system image.  No dice with either.

Investigating the error, I found some tests to confirm permission - all passed.  Trusting the error message to be accurate (permissions problem) I see direction to make sure the VSS service is started (I started and changed to automatic) and to grant
explicit access in the registry. I also see suggestions to grant the Network Service explicit rights to the computer using dcomcnfg.   No dice.
I've flattened and re-loaded.  Actually on a second machine with a newer image from Acer (first machine had a bad microSD socket that would not eject).  2nd machine exhibits the same symptoms - failing to backup
Compared settings to another Windows 8 machine - VSS service by default is manual and no explicit permission grants were in place.  e.g. changes above were unnecessary but made just the same as part of trouble-shooting
Clearly there is something more fundamental that I'm missing?  All other machines are running Windows 8 Pro or Enterprise.  This machine is running Windows 8 b... Read more

Hiya! I'd originally come aboard with the intention of asking why I see one or two "Generic volume shadow copy" driver installs EVERY DAY in perfmon/Reliability Monitor. After reading other threads on this topic, I'm now convinced this is related to my leaving a USB drive plugged into my PC 24/7 for ReadyBoost, and ditto for an external USB-attached hard disk (for backups).

My questions have now become:
1. I have 98(!!!) Generic volume shadow copy entries in the "Storage volume shadow copies" element in Device Manager (and my rebuilt Vista install is about 5 weeks old, installed on 8/7/08). Should I be concerned? What can I do to get this number down? How do I keep it down? The obvious bonehead answer appears to me to be "Delete them all, and keep it up every day, or write a script to do likewise." Is this even reasonable?
2. I have 5 "Generic volume" entries in the "Storage Volumes" element in Device Manager. Same questions as before...
3. I can't get any meaningful info from the Properties windows under either heading, though complete coverage of "Storage Volumes" and random sampling of "Generic volume shadow copy" entries all say "The device is working properly"

Any input, ideas, advice, or references that will help me understand how to proceed from here will be greatly appreciated.

TIA for your help and support,

I'm using TuneUp Utilities 2011 (luckily the new guys who took over and messed up TuneUp stuff decided not to mess with anything before 2012 version) with Avast. Avast sets System Restore disk usage % to 50.

You can try:
- go to control panel-> programs and features -> Avast -> change
- remove the component NG (down below).
- change % back to 10% (windows default) or whatever you like it
- restart
- check if % is what you set
- check restore points (seems this NG delete old restore points when run out of space)
- manually create a restore point if there are none
- open command prompt ->vssadmin list shadowstorage
- see how much space it takes.

You can also try uninstalling Grimefighter if above won't solve your problem.

A:Volume Shadow Copy

Go to Start > Search then type vssvc.exe it should be found in C:\Windows\System32 folder, if it is found in some other location, copy and paste it into the System32 folder, see if the error is resolved.

Also check that the volume shadow service is running, and set to Automatic. To check that the service is running, in the search box, type compmgmt.msc , once in Computer Management go down to Services then check the Volume Shadow service.

If it is not found at all, go back to Start > Search at type cmd.exe right click on it, then choose Run as Administrator, in the command prompt type sfc /scannow this will restore any missing or corrupt system files.

Hi guys, trust everyone had a good Xmas...

Over the holdiays, I ran a scheduled check on all my hardware....i.e., spring clean/full service....

I found that my main workstation (Win 7 Pro 32bit) had ceased backing up on my Win Home Server since 10th Dec. Checked out other systems & their backups, & no problems found, they are still backing up daily (Vista Bus,Win 7 Pro 32bit & Win 7 Ult 64bit).

On checking with the MS WHS forum, found that VSS must be enabled, so checked mine out....& found that it had stopped. Restarted service & did a manual backup at that time which was successful.

However, the automatic daily backup is still failing & on checking, found that the VSS service is stopped again.

No new programs have been installed since 10th Dec, so any idea as to what may cause this service to be repeatedly stopped?

Shadow copy is not running all the time. It is controlled by the task scheduler. A picture is taken about once a week. You can go back to any picture. If it is not time for the picture it is off. The task scheduler turns it on

Let me begin by saying that this site is the very best I have ever seen. So many talented, thoughtful, courtious people taking time to help people with problems/questions. Your Tutotial Section is just amazing. The tutorial about restoring Windows Mail into Windows 7 must have helped hundreds of folk to get back this application. The one about Shadow Explorer has a real eye opener. Not available in XP. I installed this program and low and behold there were several opportunities to restore older versions of "Data" files. My questions follow:
1. Does this not take up an extrordinary amount of disk space.
2. If I have to go back to a system restore point, to fix a problem, am I going to overwrite current "Data" files?
3. Are these tools two different things.

Many thanks in advance

Shadow explorer lets you restore your stuff
System restore restores the Operationg system,
They are not the same thing
I you use system restore your stuff will not be touched.

I found this under Windows Log in Computer managemant. This error occurs after every reboot.
"The file system structire on the disk is corrupt and unusable. Please run the chkdsk utility on the volume \Device\Harddisk\VolumeShadowCopy1"
I get this for copy 1, 2, 3, 7,etc. Is this in my setup or have I left something off? I did some searching but found nothing that matched up as I have it.

hello,

I am evaluating a new program which is to be considered comparable to Norton Ghost or Acronis True Image except it is billed to be extraordinarily fast.I think I may have a problem because the new program posted a message that volume shadow service is not supported on drive C. as a result it started the backup in "archive mode."

This mode is no quicker than it was previously so I assume the speedy version requires the volume shadow copy service.

I am running windows Pro XP SP3 with four gig of RAM and a 1.8 gauge dual core processor.the software is from Horizon DataSys and is called Drive Cloner RX. I have been using their program Rollback RX which had an earlier version of the cloning program built in.

I know nothing about volume shadow copy but the articles on Google really didn't shed any light from the perspective of a nerd. any and all help would be much appreciated.

A:question regarding volume shadow copy

The "shadow copy" is used for a simulation of the files that are in use and can't be copied. The shadow is the condition that the file was in before it was called into use, which is what prevents it from being copied directly.

The "volume shadow copy" comprises the files that can be copied and the pre-call condition of the files that can't be copied when ntbackup is invoked on a volume.

...more or less; a very simplified version.

I use BootIt Next Generation. I prefer "rock solid" much more than speed.

Hello,
Following ongoing and never ending battle with house member installing numerous software hijacks to control my laptop. (I know I sound paranoid but if you only knew). Anyway, when I try system restore it is not available and says the volume shadow copy isn't working. Any ideas?

A:Volume shadow copy error

Seems been having a lot of issues lately, as far as possible keylogger would need a malware expert to run software tools on your laptop.
For System restore again you can try this.

From (Admin) Command Prompt copy and paste this and press Enter sfc /scannow

Same command prompt copy and paste this

dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

Again run sfc /scannow

Reboot Laptop and try system restore. Not sure if any possible infection may be causing this also as i am not a malware expert to say.

Hi Everyone,

I have the Volume Shadow Service set to run automatically at startup, and when I check after startup it always running.

But something is stopping it! Whenever I look about 30 minutes later... it's stopped!

Is there a log file or any other way to determine why and when a service is stopped?

Cheers,

Jay

Therefore system restore doesn't work, good job I use Roll back RX, but it's still annoying. Tried manually starting VSS service but it says access denied, and all its asscoiated services are enabled. It also says file not found. I've never deleted anything like that off my system and it's not as if it's asking for a missing DLL? I would restore back to an earlier date but...well you see my problem! Rollback was only bought when I realised system restore wasn't working... I could live without it but it's always nice to know your new operating system functions the way it should. I have had problem after problem with Vista... Anyhow, some advice would be great. Thanks.

Hi Folks---Immmm Back!

I am using Genie Backup Pro Ver8 for backups. I have now started getting an error message stating "Volume Shadow Copy Initialization Failure" and it will not backup open files.. I have corresponded with their "support" for 3 weeks (which amounts to about 2 replies). One of their suggestions was to try NTBACKUP and it does show that open files are not being backed up.
Any suggestions on a repair?? You folks always have the quick and correct answers and i continue to lean on you

Thanks... Jerry

I have used and configured Volume Shadow Copy at work on my servers, but now I'd like to use it at home on my Windows XP Sp2 desktop and it occurs to me that the tabs aren't there. I've noted this before but now I figure I should pursue this to it's conclusion.

I know that XP Sp2 has VSS, and I've seen the services, even started them to see if that would make any difference, but I still have no Shadow Copies tab in the root drive properties box on any drive letter, which is where it is on my W2K3 servers...

Can anybody tell me decisively why this is? If it has the services then why can I not configure Shadow Copies on my XP Workstation? Is it only there to provide consistent backup to 3rd party programs?

That would seem unnecessarily restrictive when there is no real need...

Anybody have a VBS script or utility that will, respectively, automatically turn on or on-demand turn on & leave on Volume Shadow Service?  Battleship boot and tweaking.com Registry Backup indicated VSS off.  I did the service thing, however, I wouldn't mind having a quick VBS or utility.  I didn't find a REG file that would turn on/leave on VSS.

I keep having issues with Carbonite backup: it locks up my Outlook pst so I can't open it. Carbonite's response is my Volume Shadow Copy is corrupt/malfunctioning and that I should re-install Windows.

I have noticed that when I turn on my computer VSS is never on; I always have to start it. Even when I set "startup type" to automatic, it eventually reverts back to manual.

Is this normal? Is it typical for most people to have VSS on or off?

Hi There,
Can some one help us to resolve volume shadow copy problem. We are getting the below error during online backup.

Volume Shadow Copy Service warning: VSS was denied access to the root of volume \?\Volume{149aa994-24a9-11e3-a1d6-60a44cafd32d}. Denying administrators from accessing volume roots can cause many unexpected failures, and will prevent VSS from functioning properly.
Check security on the volume, and try the operation again.
We have followed-

Still getting the same error.
Please help us.
