I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I hope that the following is reasonably accurate summary of the articles I'll cite at the end:
New CPUs will require Windows 10 [or the then-current Windows O/S, if they ever release a new version]: Windows 10 will be the only supported Windows platform on Intel's upcoming 7th-generation "Kaby Lake" processor (to be released in 2016).
NEW consumer-based Intel 6th-generation Skylake devices must run Windows 10 to be supported.
A select list of NEW enterprise-based Intel 6th-generation Skylake devices will support Win7 or 8.1 for a period 18 months, until July 17, 2017, after which those enterprise customers will be expected to upgrade to Windows 10.  Post July 17, 2017, Microsoft will address only the most critical Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 security updates on Skylake devices.  Furthermore, these updates will be released only if they do not risk the reliability or compatibility of the Windows 7/8.1 platform on older devices.
Fortunately, older Intel 4th-generation Haswell and 5th-generation Broadwell CPUs will continue to be fully supported for the announced life-cycle of pre-Windows 10 operating systems: Windows 7 (currently in the Extended support phase) will continue to receive updates until January 14, 2020, and Windows 8.1 will be supported until January 10, 2023.

I took a look at other articles as well and I read them slightly differently.  Basically my understanding is that if you want to fully utilize your skylake processor you have to use Windows 10.  Also driver support for the processor and chipsets may not/will not be available for anything below Windows 10.
Another reason to go AMD imho.

Hey all,

Premise: So lately I've been reading up on articles (below) that detail Win 10 and old CPUs will no longer be compatible. I want to stay on Win 7 as long as possible as i think it's perfect for my needs, however my rig is long due for an update. My CPU, board, RAM and various I/O protocols are all nearing their life and usefulness and I don't want Win 10's privacy issues

Microsoft says new processors will only work with Windows 10 | The Verge

However there are a few questions i still have:
Causality; are the new CPUs not allowed to run anything except Win 10, or is Win 10 only allowing new CPUs to run on it?Security; as i understand it, Win 7 will only receive the most important updates up till mid 2017 and will cease to be "supported". If it's just virus definitions, i would be fine with that as i use an external AV program, but its the loopholes and backdoors (ex. java, SQL etc) that im concerned with. Should i be?

Finally if upgrading my hardware will force me to use Win 10, is Mac OS / Linux the only alternative?

Help is greatly appreciated! Thanks!!

A:Windows 10 and future CPUs

1 it reads like the processors will not run older Windows versions, but Windows 10 is not giving up support for those processors it runs on now.
2, When you hear that the remaining 9% of public service computers running XP have gone caput overnight in some final eXPloit then you should worry that the same fate will happen to 7. It hasn't, and it won't. If you use Windows 7 and no other vulnerable Windows product like Internet Explorer 10 and earlier, then your 3rd party antimalware etc., should protect you, unless you are an incautious internet user. How often do you get viruses up to now?
Finally, to use Mac OS legitimately you need to buy your hardware from them. If you want to run Linux, there will be little chance of finding new hardware that will not run it, or not finding older hardware that runs it too. If you buy new off the shelf hardware, it will likely have Windows (forget the 10) on it and you will be able to run older Windows on the machine in some capacity, probably as a virtual machine. There are alternative OS flavours, but do you really need another?

Then again, not all things go Microsoft's way, and there are more than one processor manufacturer for desktop, mobile and phone devices, so it will be up for grabs. Who knows what the next must-have revolution in edutainment-infocomms will be?

Hello,
I know it sounds stupid but I remember seeing somewhere that you can't upgrade your CPU with Windows 7 OEM. So.. can I replace my CPU ?
Thanks

A:Can you replace CPUs with Windows 7 OEM?

There should be no problem upgrading items such as CPUs, memory, HDDs/SDDs, sound and graphics cards. For motherboards though, it is a different story. OEM versions of Windows are tied to the first motherboard they are installed on, so motherboards cannot be changed as it would then be classed as a new computer. The other components mentioned are those which many people change during the life of the system, and Microsoft recognise that.

Hi All,

I would like to know more about Windows 7 support for the Intel Kaby lake/Skylake CPUs. What will happen when I deploy windows 7 OS onto a new laptop/desktop with that CPU?

My understanding is that one of the follow two scenarios will occur.
1)Windows updates will be downloaded and installed as per normal but they won't be tested for that platform/OS combination. So MS won't provide any support if the behavior of some software changes.
2)There might be some logic built into the updates so that when it detects windows 7 with kaby/skylake, the updates will simply not be installed.

Also, to add to the above - Will deploying the patches via SCCM/WSUS influence the above behavior?

I have already conducted some research, but couldn't get to the answer.

Gerhard

Hello,

I have an application that is run from the command line. I cannot get the application to run without error unless I run as administrator. I have two newer versions of the same application that run just fine and do not require administrator. The differences in the code between the versions are not extensive and I can't figure out why the old version needs elevation to administrator to run. These applications were built with gnu cpp and don't have a manifest. The application is actually two binaries that communicate through shared memory. There is a parent process that launches a child process, passes data to the child, and receives data back. I don't know what this would have to do with anything because the versions that work do the same thing as the versions that don't.

Can anyone here shed any light on reasons why windows 7 would require administrator and possible work-arounds?

LMHmedchem

A:why does windows 7 require elevation to administrator?

For security reasons Windows requires admin privileges to access many system resources. This has been a feature of the NT platform since the beginning. Each new version of Windows has tightened up security to meet the demands of the world of today. That creates some issues for applications designed for older operating systems, particularly when running with a non admin account. Needed resources that were accessible on older systems can no longer be accessed without an admin level account. Newer applications were designed for the more modern tightened security and they run as expected. They may not with a future OS.

Workarounds, if any, will depend on the details of the situation.

A:Does Windows 7 require a disc to reformat?

Welcome to Windows Seven Forums.

Generally speaking, Dell will not supply a Windows DVD unless you order and pay a little extra for it at the time you order your new computer.

The first thing you need to do is create a set of recovery discs before you do anything else, as they will get your computer back to its factory state should you need to.

Create your recovery discs as per JDobbsy's link, and then if you want to get rid of Dell's bloatware and clean install Windows 7, you can do so as this link explains.

A:New hardware will require Windows 7 reinstall?

I doubt that you have hit a limit. I have reinstalled my version of windows many times; yes, you need to call their activation line and enter some data, but if you have a valid version of windows, and it is only installed on one machine ( the one you are trying to activate), there is no reason if cannot be reactivated. If you have do have a problem just enter all zeroes (00000) for the code boxes while you are on the phone and it will forward you to a live person.

A signed driver is not necessary in Windows. It is an extra security layer, as drivers can become corrupt by malware. If you obtained the driver from a trusted source (like the device manufacturer's website), you can go ahead and tell Windows to install it.

A:Windows 7 Build 7601 error - require help to fix

Your installarion has to be classed as counterfeit.
With your specs, it's likely that the machine shipped with Starter edition installed, rather than the current Ultimate - but someone has since 'upgraded' it and installed a hacker's Activation Exploit to force acrtivation and validation to be accepted - Windows has now discovered this, and it's this which is raising red flags.

You need to reformat and reinstall using genuine media - unfortunately media for Start edition are not available by download, so your only option is to order a set of media direct from the manufacturer.

But i am worried as to whether it will just delete the contents of my C drive or the whole hard disk? Because i have a good damn deal of content on my other drives.

A:Does windows 8 shift to 32 bit to 64 bit require a complete reformat?

There is no upgrade path from a 32 bit to a 64 bit OS so a clean install is necessary. These systems are really very different internally. You would need to format the partition containing the OS and all installed applications will need to be reinstalled, even if on other partitions.

Data on other partitions should not be effected but you should have a full backup anyways. Sometimes people use the wrong partition and loose all their data. There are many ways you can loose data and you need to be prepared when, not if, something happens. All important files need at least one backup copy, those of particular importance need 2 or more.

Hello.

I have fortunately not installed Windows Genuine Advantage, thus its "impossible" removal won't be the issue here.

The problem is that it attempts to install (Not alone, it notifies me and requires me to click next and accept a lisence agreement) upon startup every time.

The only way I have been able to disable this is using MSCONFIG and putting the PC into a state where no startup items load.

If I remove just WGA, the computer will still notify me that it is in a modified startup state, which I don't really want to do.

Is there any way to prevent this program running on startup otherwise?

Note : I cannot uninstall the WGA installation tool, and nor can I purge it from startup with such as CCleaner.

I do have a validated copy of Windows, before you ask, I just can't stand microsoft pushing its crap down my throat.

Second note : I contacted Microsoft Technical support, It was suggested that I validate my copy using a program they linked me to, it was WGA! They totally misunderstood, or tried to trick me into installing the bloody thing!

Thanks for any/all assistance fella's.

Hello,

I need some help forcing windows security to pop up and require credentials whenever a program tries to access the internet. I have this configured for one piece of software that I use and would like to do it for a few others. I tried looking through a bunch of local and domain security policies with no luck. Attached is a screenshot for reference.

Thank you

Hi chaps,

My mother's XP PC presented her with an AVG update request whilst she was using it (online).

She clicked 'update now' and then clicked 'restart now' when it told her she needed to restart to complete the process.

Windows is now telling her it needs to be activated/registered with Microsoft again. She can't log into her profile as it puts up windows asking her to enter her internet settings or proxy server settings. If you try and skip this step it sends her back to the log-in/shut down screen. Her internet connection was and is wireless, but there is no option for this.

I am also concerned as to why AVG might have caused this to happen in the first place, although a quick Google search hasn't shown me any virus horror stories.

Does anyone have any ideas how we can get her PC out of this infernal loop and running normally again please?

Thanks in advance,
Paul.

So I have several games that I enjoy playing once in a while when the current day games just get old. I have tried to install them on my laptop that runs Windows 10 but NONE of them seem to work due to them requiring DirectX 9.0.  My system currently
has DirectX 12 and apparently that won't work for these games. I have tried to download DirectX 9.0 but it won't even let me finish the download because it tells me my computer won't allow the download because it has to be Windows 2000 or older. Anybody have
an answer for me?

Hi,
For a few months now, I have not been able to update Windows with any Windows Updates that require a restart.

At the moment, I can't apply:
Update for Windows 7 (KB979538)
Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (KB976932)

I have a feeling this might have something to do with the error I get when I shutdown/restart:
csc.exe - Application Error : The application was unable to start correctly (0xc0000142). Click OK to close the application.
I can't find a csc.exe anywhere!

For troubleshooting, I have ran SFC /SCANNOW, CCleaner, Malwarebytes, adaware, AVG scan, and a TrendMicro House call(which found 2 trojans). I tried the registry
Research on google has not helped mo out so well.

I remember reading in some Windows documentation and in a few Win98 tweak guides that Windows requires 20% of the space on a hard drive, that it resides on, to be free for optimal operation. Back in the days of Win98 I really noticed the slow down when I would run with 500MB's or less. Since then my HD size has grown immensely (20GB vs 300GB) and now 20% is a pretty big deal. I'm getting ready to do a clean install so I need to figure out if this is still a problem.

I prefer to use my 300GB as my Windows drive since I have so many games installed but I don't want to sacrifice 20% of it (60GB) so Windows can run optimally. So is this old rule of thumb still a reality today with WinXP Pro (SP2 if it matters)?

A:Does Windows Still Require 20% Free Space For Optimal Performance?

I'd say you're safe with 10GB free on the system drive. But a single 300GB partition with all the system files, your program files, your media and your downloads can fragment pretty quickly once it's nearly full so I would consider a better partitioning layout.

This is the time to do it since you're willing to do a clean install. It can grant you some extra performances, especially if you have 2 hard drives. Check this out :

How many hard drives do you have (internal drives, not external ones) ? How much space do you need for your games installation folders ?

I recently purchased a new Dell Inspiron 13 7000 series 2-in-1 laptop.  Overall it works great, but I'm always required to press the power button twice to turn on the computer.  This has always been the case since the first time I turned on the laptop after purchase.
When I press the power button the first time, the laptop powers on and the Dell logo appears, then the screen goes black.  I press the power button a second time and it boots up successfully and Windows loads.  It's very strange and this happens every single time.  Any thoughts?  Is there some weird setting in the BIOS or Windows setting that would cause this?
