Can't boot from USB at T420

Q: Can't boot from USB at T420

Hi guys, I have a big problem: I have tried to install Windows 10 on my ThinkPad T420 from an USB-Stick, but I can't boot from it. The T420 has no OS and no DVD player. I tried an installation with a windows stick and an ubuntu stick, nothing works. Also I have set the BIOS options Legacy Mode to "Both". Unfortunately I can't disable the secure boot because there is no secure boot option!? :/There are any ideas?Cheers Michel

Preferred Solution: Can't boot from USB at T420

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A:T420 usb boot woe

Plug in your flash drive.  Enter Bios and go to the Startup->Boot section. Check if Usb Hdd is excluded from booting (lower part of the screen). If it is excluded, highlight it and press "X". Press F10 to save and exit. Press F12 and it should appear now as an option.

Hello,  Please am having issues with my T420....when i turn it on, it boots for 3-5 secs and then goes off...have tried several solutions such as; -removing the battery and power adapter, then pressing the power button for 30-60 seconds to release the excess power...then placing the battery and turning it on again but won't still work.-have also removed the hard drive and tried another hard drive but won't still work. Please am really in need of a help....i patiently await any possible solution. System specs: i7-2640M, 2.80Ghz, 8GB RAM, 1TB Hdd, Windows 10 pro, 64-bit OS Note: sometimes it boots completely but once am done and i shut it down or hibernate...then it starts same problem when i attempt turing it on. Regards

A:My T420 won't boot completely and turns off after turning it on URGENT!!!

This kind of shutoff is usually related to overheating or the thermal circuitry thinking that it is overheating.  The thermal paste could have dried up to the point that the fan is no longer making contact, so I would reseat the fan with new paste.  It is fairly easy on that model - the CPU and fan are on the top.  If that doesn't help, it sounds like the thermal circuitry (motherboard).

Just purchased a reconditioned T420, and was happy to find the memory slot on the back of the notebook open, but when I opened the back up I noticed these two wires just to the left of the open memory slot. I know it is not the best picture (its a screen capture if an instrctional video on adding memory), but you can see the part that I am talking about. How to you attach images?Hopefully you can follow the links to see the pictures I am talking about.

A:What can go here - T420

Hello and welcome,

Have a look at page 75 of the Hardware Maintenance Manual - ThinkPad T420, T420i

That slot can take a WWAN card (those are the antenna cables) or an mSATA SSD.  I run a 256GB SSD in mine with an HDD in the normal drive slot.  It's a nice combo.

I am guessing one of these chips is not compatible with my T420.  I have them both installed and 6GB are recognized no matter which bay they are installed in.   So I assume 2GB on the board, and one of these is good (which?).  So assuming I will have one of the slots available, how large a chip can I get and what spec am I looking for?  (sorry I thought I knew this stuff, but apparently not)

A:T420 - Wrong Ram?

There is no RAM "on-board", so one of the DIMMs is bad or is a 2GB DIMM, regardless of what the label says.  Try them one at a time in the slot under the keyboard.

Hi, having just purchased a new T420 with 4GB of RAM I would like to immediately upgrade it to 8GB as right now the cost is pretty low. However, I would appreciate some advice on which option to choose. The Crucial Memory scanner gives me quite a few options. Should I buy 1 x 4GB to compliment the existing memory or 2 x 4GB and replace the existing memory? Also there are a few different typesDD3 PC3-12800 CL11 Unbuffered Non-ECC DD3-1600DD3 PC3-10600 CL9   Unbuffered Non-ECC DD3-1333either are available at 1.5v or 1.35v options. There isn't really any price difference between them, but a single 4GB stick is half the price if I was to keep the existing memory. Any help in choosing the best option is much appreciated

Also there are a few different types...

PSREF says the T420 uses "PC3-10600 1333MHz DDR3." You can use faster memory like PC3-12800 but it won't have any effect on performance.

I would buy a single 4GB SODIMM to add to your existing module. A matched pair will theoretically perform faster but the difference is single digit percentage. You won't be able to perceive it in practice.

As for voltage, I'd Google the part number of the SODIMM you now have then buy a second SODIMM that's rated for the same voltage.

Recently started using a new T420 having had a T410 for about a year or so.  I am a regular user of Webex to host sessions or present stuff from my machine and had no issues with my 410.  I just tried to host for the first time using my new T420 with the Nvidia NVS 4200 souped up card and when I share either a specific application or my desktop all the audience sees is basically a black screen. Anyone else encountered, and hopefully resolved, this?

hey markbat420,welcome to the forum.i have not seen this issue before, but i'll try to help. First up, could you uninstall the graphic driver from your unit.let windows install its generic driver and then try the webex again. see if it works with generic drivers.later go to http://support.lenovo.com and download the graphic driver for your unit, install and test webex again.any difference ?Also, check with Cisco Webex (i think this is the developer) if they have any issue with the Nvidia NVS 4200 card.

I hope this is the right place for this. I'm a long-time ThinkPad fan who really needs help choosing a successor to my exhausted T420. I'm not interested in a touch screen, very comfortable with Windows 7, vaguely afraid of Windows 10.I need to get back to work - please help!(If this is the wrong place for this please direct me....)Many thanks, Rosemary

Hi I have a T420 won't power on at all. I have taken the battery out and tried plugging the laptop in and nothing. Not a kick out of it. In Summer 2016 I noticed it used to get very hot underneath where the charger is plugged in, then it gets hot even when the charger wasnt plugged in. It gottop the stage where the laptop was so hot that the laptop itself slowed down and it had to be shut down completely to let it cool down, then turn it back on but within a half an hour it was raging hot again. I took it to a computer shop to be cleaned out and since then it has been perfect, no issues at all, until now. I last used the machine on Wednesday morning and shut it down correctly, then on Wednesday night I went to use it and it wouldn't power on. There is no lights, sound, nothing when I press the power button. Is there any hope for it or is it completely dead and time for me to get a new one? I bought it in 2013 as a refurbished model so I'm guessing it's just died from use.

Since that time my audio stopped working. I see a red diagnoal X on the speaker symbol and it says, "The audio source is not running". I get an error message when I run troubleshoot. I went to device manager to uninstall and reinstall the audio drivers. I am unable to open Smart Audio in Control Panel.  Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated.  Also is it possible to still go back to Windows 7. If so and I can get my audio back I would not mind. Thanks in advance,

Finally, I took every single screw off the bottom of the machine, but even THAT didn't do it. What's the trick?!

Dear all, I have a Lenovo T420 laptop running Windows 10. The DVD-player is able to play some discs, but is not able to play certain other discs. My idea would be to update the firmware of the DVD-player, but I am not able to find the correct firmware. I installed the Lenovo Service Bridge (?) to allow the Lenovo website to detect my laptop model. Browsing to "Drivers and Software", I downloaded "FWWINOD", a program which is supposed to identify my disc drive and offer firmware updates. This program is however not able to detect the disc drive--the list stays empty. Taking a peek in the FWSB11\OPTIARC, I see two (supposed) drivers: "WinUpdater_AD7590S_1FM" and "WinUpdater_AD7910S_1_D1". Indeed, these seem to be drivers for a different model. * Attempt 2: GooglingI do seem to be able to find drivers for DDU7740H using Google. Could anyone help me out? Thanks in advance!

A:T420 License Only - No OS Installed

The license is probably windows 7 and the key is only valid for an OEM install from disks that you would need to order (buy) from Lenovo.  Installing windows 7 today is complicated.

Microsoft has not done well with windows 7 updates. A fresh install of windows 7 requires a lot of things to be downloaded, and the update process works poorly for win7. You need to update the servicing stack and do an update rollup before windows update will run at all. If you were ever going to update to windows 10, now is the time.
Try this: Update servicing stack: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=46817 Then apply this: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=53332 Then retry windows update

I cannot say for sure on your caddy model, but generally being thinner is not a problem, but some 7mm SSD's ship with spacers like this included to ensure a tight fit if needed anyway.    BTW, You probably can just mount the SSD into your old HDD caddy.

I'm looking to get my first ThinkPad, and the model I'm currently looking at is the T420. I'm attracted to that particular model mainly due to the price (they can be obtained second-hand at low cost). I don't need a powerful laptop - after borrowing a simularly spec'd Dell for a while I'm perfectly happy with the performance of Sandy Bridge. However, one thing that I do want to be able to do is connect two external monitors to the ThinkPad. When both monitors are connected to the ThinkPad I won't be using the internal display, the ThinkPad will be away in a dock. However, both monitors are VGA only. There are various docks available for the T420 that have a VGA port on them, and the T420 also has a built-in VGA port. Will I be able to run two VGA monitors (not mirrored, extended desktop), one from each VGA port? Kind regards,Andrew

In order to pair up again my headset with the T420, I tried to set the computer?s option to "allow Bluetooth devices to find this computer." However, the computer disallowed it with an error message and required the removal of Bluetooth device but there was indeed no Bluetooth device connected. I also opened the Device Manager but could not locate any Bluetooth. I would appreciate a lot if someone could advise me what to do.

Hi there, My laptop is a T420 4177-CTO with Windows 10 x64. Since two weeks ago, my computer started to freeze time and time every 5 minutes. The freezing usually comes with no sign, but it is very regular, usually lasts for around 80 seconds and starts at times of X:X0 and X:X5 (thus every five munites). Sometimes the freezing was not complete, and I could move the mouse. For a couple of times, the freezing was too long and there appeared a Blue Screen of Death with the error of "dpc_watchdog_violation". Temperatures are fine. Based on some internet search, I updated several drivers (touchpad driver, IDE ATA/ATAPI controller driver), but it does not seem to fix the problem. It seems other drivers are good.  I am not sure what is happening to the laptop. Thanks in advance for any suggestions and help. Regards,

I reinstalled my Windows, and the laptop looks good for the moment now. Can it be a smart temperature control so something? My hard drive temperature was usually just 43 degrees.

Hi there, I am thinking to upgrade my T420 from windows 7 Pro. to Windows 10 Pro.  I have checked on the Lenovo page but they dont seem to have the drivers for Windows 10 yet.  Also, the T420 model is not listed on the Lenovo Windows 10 compatibility list.  Does anyome have more info on this? Did some of you tried installing Win 10 on the T420 series?  PLease let me know, much appreciated. Chris

A:T420 and Windows 10 upgrade

The T420 isn't officially supported by Lenovo for Windows 10. It should still install and run fine, but you'll need to source your own Windows 10 compatible drivers from OEM sites. There are also driver aggregator sites out there like station-drivers (French, but the download button is obvious).

I'm planning to replace my broken T420 with a refurbished one, and swap the hard drives. (I'll make sure they both have the same OS.) Is it OK to do this, if the old unit is a 420, but the new one is a 420s? Are there any other pitfalls I need to watch out for? The BIOS'es should be perfectly compatible, right?

A:Swapping drives on T420

You might need to reinstall some drivers when you swap the hard drives; here's the T420s driver page: https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-t-series-laptops/thinkpad-...

When I swapped the drives from my Yoga 910 to 920, I didn't need to re-certify Windows. That might be different in your case since the T420 runs Windows 7, which might not have the automatic license certification. Make sure you have the Windows product key just in case it asks for it when you swap the drives.

Other than that, you should be good to go.

I have a T420 but the Microphone doesnt seem to work.  I've read many posts about these issues but nothing I've found has solved my issue. I've tried three drivers: 1. Windows Default driver:  The microphone shows up in the CP recording tab however it doesnt record any sound at all2. conexant 20672 driver (8.32.23.5) from Windows Update and (8.32.44.0): The microphone doesnt show up at all in the recording tab Some have said to goto the advanced tab and disable "Enhancements" but I see no option.I've tried FN-F6 and tried many permutations with no difference.

Hi eng3,

Welcome to Lenovo Forums!

Try this, go to control panel / sound / manage audio devices
Go to the recording tab, click ?internal microphone", then properties.
Then in the "level" tab make sure the mic is not muted (even if the level is at 100 %)

Please let me know whether the above steps helped you.
Thank you, have a good day.

Did someone help you today? Click on the ?upper half star? at the left side of the post to thank them with a Kudo!
