Odd distortion while playing music in any music player on Win 7 PC

Q: Odd distortion while playing music in any music player on Win 7 PC

I am not sure if the title accurately tells what my issue is. I hope I can explain it.

When listening to music on my PC, it does not matter if I use Winamp, Songbird, Quicktime, Windows Media Player, or any other software. Every so often, there appears some sort of distortion, like the drive that the music is on slows down. I dont know if it is the driver or what. Its hard to explain. You have to hear it. I dont think its the mp3 file itself, cause I could play a song and it will be perfect, but then the next time I play it, it will distort. It is really driving my nuts cause I can't find the reason for it.

Anybody out here got any ideas? even crazy ones? Thanks.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I apologize if this has already been addressed. I honestly don't know what I'm doing. My Vista's not playing any of the music files on my computer or my iPod on any music player I use (iTunes, WinAmp, the Rhapsody that came with it), though it plays anything else that's online. Other sounds on the computer are also playing (MSN, AIM, system sounds). What it does exactly is, upon clicking any song in the media library, it shows intention to play it but then stays at 0:00, while recognizing the length of song, name of artist, etc. Did I miss something?

A:HELP! music is playing in the background but no music program is open!

Are you close to a radio station's transmitter site and antenna? That sounds like "RFI" (Radio Frequency Interference" getting into your speaker system.

When you get it, unplug the speakers from the PC but leave them powered on and the volume up and see if you still get it. If you do it's RFI and the speaker system is picking it up or it's coming through the AC power line to the speakers. If this just started I would suspect either a bad cable ground or just a dirty plug connection somewhere in the system.

When i download a new song and just put it in my comp it will not play saying that the file attempting to play has an extenstion(.mp3) that does not match file format. I can play music videos on you tube just fine and i can play music that has a file of .wma or .m4a but not mp3's. Can someone tell me how to fix my comp so it will play mp3s that are stored in my comp or music player.

I recently got a Zune and for the Zune software to work, WMP needs to work. A few months ago, it stopped playing music altogether. Not one song. It won't even play anything off of a CD, or on the internet. I was probably on the phone with Zune for 7-8 hours for them to tell me they couldn't help me. I was then connected to Microsoft, who told me I could call Acer or pay 60 dollars plus tax to Microsoft for them to help me. I called Acer and they said I would have to pay $60 per 30 mins. I don't have that kind of money right now and i just want my WMP fixed!!
Can someone help me please!!

Here's an answer that someone found (seems like alot of trouble to me, syncing music to Att phone then back to,,,,)
http://askville.amazon.com/Zune-Win...edia-player/AnswerViewer.do?requestId=5785573

I suggest reinstalling the Media Player. Click Start, type Turn Windows features on and off

Uncheck the player, apply, restart Windows, recheck, apply, restart Windows.

The above may be a quick fix that won't last though?

Have you tried the free "Jet Player" - there's not much it won't play or burn and it will run circles around WMP.

Hope this helps as it seems you have found what others have - (it may be awhile before Microsoft decides to deal with this issue)

Hey all,

So, heres the scenario! My friends laptop used to play music fine in different media players like iTunes, winamp, limewire and so on... Her computer for the past few weeks hasn't played any music. When she hits the play button or double clicks a song nothing happens. It doesn't even begin to play she says.

I asked her if she heard any sound during regular use of the computer. She said yes, she hears everything fine, even youtube videos and music through websites.

She checked the device manager, nothing out of the norm there. I do plan on walking her through how to scan indepth for viruses and spyware and such, but other than that I'm stuck!

Any help is much appreciated!! Thank you all

Hey, been a while since I've been around, cuz I now have a mac (just kidding, I don't and therefore that's not the reason.) I'm sure my helpless questions and unhelpful advice have have been sorely missed in my absence, so I'll get right on it.

Okay, I have downloaded free music files legally (or so they claim) in WMA format, from mpfree.com, where by the way they make you read a whole bunch of offers which of course you have no interest in, before getting your free music. And while they have played without a hitch on the PC, after trying to sync to my Sandisk Sansa 8GB mp3 player, I discovered that... they worked perfectly!

Or so I thought... In fact, after a week or something like that, I ran into a snag. Suddenly they wouldn't play on my Sansa. Instead, I started getting a message telling me to sync to continue my music subscription! I had no clue what it was talking about, but since none of these songs would play any longer on my device, I tried what I interpreted it as telling me to do. I tried syncing my device with the PC to fix the problem. I tried removing the files from my Sansa, then syncing them over again, I tried deleting them from the computer altogether and having them only on the Sansa... Of course I checked the licences and they say that I'm allowed to place the songs on a device and essentially do as I please within reason. I am also aware of no subscription. So, I'm kinda confused as you may have guessed.

Anyhoo,... Read more

If so, try removing DivX. I do not think it is causing the problem, but could not hurt to try. Does it still continue?

So I searched around for a bit and found a few discussions about the Music app crashing, but none appear to be the problem I'm having. I can open the app and do most things in it. Search, navigate around, I can even play music most of the time except for one notable exception. When you click on an artist or album, the app opens a smaller window in the middle of the app where you can usually play the song, along with a few other options (like Play Top Songs or Explore Artist. Whenever I click play from this window, the app suddenly closes. This does not happen with music that I have files locally on my hard drive, it only happens with streaming music. I can get streaming music to play as long as I can find a play button elsewhere in the app aside from this window that pops up in the middle of the screen. But if a song is already playing, I can skip back and forth and navigate around the app. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the app and this fixes it for a little while, but it eventually begins happening again. It crashes with zero other apps or programs running. I have AVG antivirus running, but I disabled that for a while and it still crashes. I noticed that when it does crash, the Music app doesn't close completely as it's still listed along with other running apps if I hover in the upper left corner and drag my mouse down to view all running apps.

Thoughts?

Is there any particular reason that you are not using UEFI or Secure Boot?
In general this model comes with UEFI and Secure Boot enabled.

Have you set the time and time zone on your system? (the flag on your profile says Minnesota, but the time is set to Pacific Daylight time).

The system also comes with a 1 tB HDD, but now has an SSD installed - did you have someone install the SSD and move the operating system for you? (We do this at work quite often - normally we do it by cloning the hard drive to the SSD).

I'd suggest running a memory diagnostic, as one of the memory dumps has an error that is suggestive of memory problems (hardware): Memory Diagnostics You may also want to run the free hardware diagnostics from here: Hardware Diagnostics

Beyond that, I'd suggest visiting the Asus website and updating ALL of the drivers there.
To start with, go by the dates on the drivers in the memory dump that I've listed below.

If all of this doesn't stop the BSOD's, please run Driver Verifier according to these instructions: Driver Verifier Settings

The other day I posted my problem with getting a new computer which had win7 installed. When downloading all my backups which had been on an exterior drive, they ended up in strange places. Suddenly, I had libraries and the library had folders but all the folder were named differently. No more My Documents, my this, my that. Instead they dropped the my, which by itself would not have bee a big deal but then they put my document files into my music folder. Well that got me mad.

I'm a head-hunter and I keep everthing in Outlook Contacts. In those contacts I have links to my candidates' resumes folders. I also have links from my clients to their folders. However, after downloading, having thought I had done everything by the letter, I found the links didn't work. What a mess. I have over 1200 candidates categorized by qualifications. I have clients in a similar situation. Their links don't work either.

Then some very nice people from this site suggested I create partitions and lose the libraries. At first I was frightened. I had heard of partitions but had never been courageous enough to actually try them out. I was also angry with Microsoft because they changed things for no reason. Time is money and I'm losing money when I have to dick around with the computer instead of on the phone head-junting.

Feeling defeated, I bit the bullet, downloaded the software MiniTool Partition. It seemed easy enough but I have run into some snags.

Normally, you would just drag them (copy, not move) with the mouse--from the external drive to F:Music and Videos. Can't you do that? But I may be misunderstanding you.

However:

First I would decide how many partitions you ultimately want to end up with on your internal drive.

You need the one named system

You need C

You don't need the others.

Plan 1: put all of your personal files on C and subdivide C with a folder structure: Music, Pictures, Video, Work, whatever suits you. 2 total partitions.

Plan 2: put only Windows and programs on C, and put all data on D. Subdivide D with a similar folder structure. 3 total partitions.

Plan 3: Put Windows on C. Use several different data partitions D, E, F, and so on. One for each data type (music, video, pictures, etc). 4 or more total partitions.

I would lean toward plan 2. You seem to have chosen plan 3.

There are advantages and disadvantages to each of those 3 plans. Plan 3 works, but having a bunch of partitions can be wasteful because you can never anticipate the proper size and growth rate of the data type on a partition.

Your pictures partition is already 80% full.

If you know for sure that you want to stay with those particular partitions, you should be able to use that tool to resize them.

Or you could delete all but system... Read more

Not being that experienced, I'm a little confused w/ the way the Library sorts CDs into genres vs the way I could sort the Music Folders. They don't seem to relate. For example, the Library lists an album under "Rock" that I would like to move to another genre but I cannot figure a way to do this. On the other hand, I know I could play around w/ the folders so that this particular CD is in the right place. However, I'm not sure that if I take the time to organize my Music folders whether this will have any impact on how the Library sorts them.
If you can shed some light on this I'd sure appreciate it.
Thanks, Nick.

A:Solved: Windows media music library vs music folders

Mp3 music files have tags that are kept inside the files themselves. The most common ones are Artist, Album, Track Title, Track Number, Release Year and Genre. When you put a file into the WMP library, the tags are read and stored, along with the file location.

So the tag data is what shows up in the WMP library and you can sort on various fields depending on which version you have. But the files can be put anywhere and named anyway you like. Most people use a certain naming convention like Artist-TrackNumber-Title.

If you want to sort the folders by genre you could do that, but you'll have to do it manually. You can do some manipulating of folders and filenames with tag editors. If you want to give that a try get Mp3Tag.

I have just bought on-line, will only transfer music files with Windows Media Player 10.   The instructions for the music player, Samsung YP-Z5, says that you can only transfer files to the player when Windows Media Player 10 is installed on the pc, which you have to instal with the installation CD.  I have Windows Media Player 11 and Media Monkey on my pc, that I use for my other music player and Windows Media Player 12 and Media Monkey on my laptop.  Does that mean that the version 11, I have on my pc will be rolled back to 10 then? isn't that going to mess up my music.  I don't understand why it is an older version of Windows Media Player as I can't use it on my laptop. Can anyone help please.

I am having a problem that tons of people are having with the install of the music manager, but upon looking for solutions, they either work for a small amount of people or they are 3 pages long, out of most peoples ability range..mine at least

...and I am avg, at least

I am first getting an error code 1717 and then "error 4201 the instance name passed was not recognized as valid by a wmi data provider" -- both revolve around the service "Windows Event Log" not running.

I went into the registry on two keys and edited two permissions to allow...to no avail

I rebooted in safe mode, ran cmd, renamed some file to file2, upon restarting it is supposed to generate a new file.

Can anyone help. One person said it may involve a new installation. please , no.

That can't be it, I just did one two weeks ago.

Thanks so much. And Happy Thanksgiving
Eric

Hi, anybody can help me how to get Metro Music App to read and play my music library from Synology 212j+ network drive?
Thing is it works fine for standard windows 8 media player so why the heck does it not work for Metro Music App?

When I select a song from the explorer it is played by metro but where are all the other files?
I have a Dutch - not yet supported region - Windows Account, so cant login music and xbox.
I have added synology shared music folder to my desktop music library but explorer keeps warning me that some features may not work so I have also indexed the folder but still no success

It gives me the creeps these complications and Windows may be loosing another user to the Apple platform (which would mean spending a lot of money to replace my windows home system but at least everything is compatible - I guess)
please help, I tried a lot already

Hi there
Goede Morgen !!

Remember that W8 is still technically in BETA so there is more to come out.
Since multi-media and connectivity is very important this I'm sure will be fixed in the final builds of W8.

I shouldn't base your purchasing requirements against what's in a BETA build of an OS. -- Wait till the Final before making that decision -- and meantime use something like Winamp or plenty of other free music playing apps most of which can also stream to and from smart phones etc.

Cheers (Tot Ziens)

First, I wanted to listen to a clip on Amazon and I clicked "listen" for Windows Media Player and then another time for Real Player, since I have BOTH. All it would do was save it to my computer (entitled "hurl") and then I couldn't open it. It didn't even give the option of opening it--that was "grayed out."

Also, is there ANYwhere that I can just download a song without taking out a bank loan or giving them my firstborn? I went to Yahoo radio, too, and went through the sign-in procedure and then it wouldn't complete. The button just did nothing. I don't plan to do a lot of downloading music. I just want to get a song occasionally.

Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks!

Here is a link to free radio stations in the UK (I don't know where you are based)

Scroll down to the player that you use.

I finally got around to moving my MP3s to a central location and VMC discovered the library just fine. I started to play a few and realized that I cannot FF or RW any of the tracks.

Is this just mine or is it just the way VMC is?

Hi Folks,

Will all optical drives play music CDs? When I say 'music CDs', I am referring to those CDs that play on a conventional domestic CD player. The reason for putting the question is that music CDs are sometimes referred to as .cda or cdaudio. However, when I've been looking at what types of discs an optical drive will play, all the drives that I've looked at make no mention of cdaudio or music CDs. CD-R, CD-RW get mentioned, of course.

Can anyone help?

Thanks.

Yes. That was their original purpose back in the olden days.

My computer will be on but no programs up when all of a sudden music and commercials start playing. I have run malwarebytes and AVG anti-virus and neither one finds anything. It does not do it the entire time, just comes and goes. If I restart my computer it does not do it for a while. My computer runs on Windows XP Professional. Any info on what it is/how to get rid of it in a 'computers for dummies' kind of way would be very appreciated. ;-)

Thanks for your time!
-Melissa

PS I don't know if this has anything to do with it but about two weeks ago I had something that would re-direct me to other sites when I tried to use a search engine. AVG never found anything and malwarebytes found a few, got rid of them, but it was still doing the same thing. I ended up taking someone's advice to do a system restore that fixed the problem but now this....

A:music/ads playing out of nowhere

AVG and Malwarebytes have started finding tons of things, deleting them, and finding more. It does not seem to be going away. I also keep getting Windows Security Alerts when I start up my computer. How can I get rid of whatever this is? Any help is appreciated!

Hi everyone,

I have several users complaining that their PC are getting to slow and all of them play music on their computer. Could that be affecting the PC performance?

Thanks

where did they get the music - if from peer to peer such as kazaa or bearshare etc then those sites are full of spyware - you only need to look in the secruity forum to see issues with spyware due to P2P netwroks.....

if not can you post details
windows version
PC specs - memory etc
what software they use to play music
itunes - etc

I posted this in the HJT Logs thread and they told me that it wasn't a malware issue, but to check on the Vista support thread.

I've seen both Ascentive and Viewpoint Media Player on malware lists and had both installed on my computer (both were removed via Revo Uninstaller). VMP is completely gone, but after I ran Ascentive through Revo Uninstaller, a file called "GUID" showed up. When I tried deleting the GUID file, it basically told me "access denied."

The main thing I've noticed going wrong is that none of my music files work anymore...it gives me an error message saying: Windows Media Player cannot access the file. The file might be in use, you might not have access to the computer where the file is stored, or your proxy settings might not be correct.

If any reference to my old thread is needed, check here: hxxp://www.techsupportforum.com/security-center/hijackthis-log-help/292757-ascentive-viewpoint-media-player.html#post1708716

Hi,

Please download Rkill (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com) to your desktop.
There are 2 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.
You only need to get one of these to run, not all of them. You may get warnings from your antivirus about this tool, ignore them or shutdown your antivirus.
 rKill.exe: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/10/iExplore.exe (renamed rKill.exe): http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/11/
Double-click on the Rkill desktop icon to run the tool.
If using Vista or Windows 7 right-click on it and chooseRun As Administrator.
A black DOS box will briefly flash and then disappear. This is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully.
If not, delete the file, then download and use the one provided in Link 2.
Do not reboot until instructed.
If the tool does not run from any of the links provided, please let me know.
After the tool has finished running, a text file named Rkill.txt should be located on the desktop. Please copy and paste the contents into your next reply.

Hi. I have just got a new laptop and although it has a lot of space on it I have a lot of music. I have an external hard drive, can I store my music on there and get windows media player and itunes to still be able to play it? Also for future downloads can I get them to be stored there? If so, how? Thanks

A:Storing and playing music

Yes, just point itunes music library to the external drive under edit - preferences -
NOTE that some external harddrives can get very hot if left on for a while and eventually fail quite quickly

Hi,

I am not sure if I need to place my question here, if not feel free to post it in the right section.

We have about 15 Pcs (WIN XP) in our warehouse and all of then have TFT screens with speakers in it. I am looking for a kind of program to:

1) Play Music files on every pC (all the same music together)
2) Play special music files (MP3 files) at certain hours. For example to tell them that it is almost lunchtime, or time to go home,.....

All this must be controlled from one PC.

Is this possible? Does such software exist?

Any idea/help is welcome!

Thx,

David
