I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hy,
I used Windows 10 Transformation Pack on my Windows 7 and it changed some icons white... which is nice when I see them against my dark taskbar, but is completely invisible in that rectangle of hidden icons of the notification area.
I would like to make that area dark like my taskbar, to see the icons properly, but I could not find any way.

Any advice will be appreciated.

Thank you very much.

I saw people are trying to get icons to the lower right side of the taskbar, so I played around and found this way. Starting with Windows Live Messenger 9.

1. Pin the program to the taskbar.

2. Close the program so it's not running.

3. Hold down shift key and right-click the program's icon.

4. Select Compatibility Troubleshooter.

5. Move along the selections , select "The program worked in earlier versions of Windows..." and when asked for OS of compatibility mode choose Windows XP or "I don't know" (should default to Windows XP).

6. Finish the wizard and you're done. I'm including screenshots for messenger.

7. You can now unpin the program from the taskbar. It will appear on the notification area when minimized.

The difference with this way is that instead of manually setting compatibility mode to the executable, Windows sets it to all the application's resources and dependency files.

Try it and let me know of your results.

A:Solution to display minimized apps in notification area

OK- this is what I am trying to do. But, the icons that I am trying to hide appear in the Taskbar only when I start the program. So there is no way for me to close the program AND have its icon in the Taskbar so I can do Step 3. When I close the program, the icon is removed from teh taskbar.

Many programs add their own icons to the Notification Area, Others never do it, but sometimes it is convenient.

I have been searching for a long time for how to add an icon to a couple of programs, and couldn't find a tutorial here. Almost all have icons included with their executive files, so maybe it won’t be very difficult to add one clickable icon. Any idea of how to do it, please?

A:How to Add Program Icons to the Notification Area?

The notification icons are special icons defined by the software. If the software wasn't developed to provide a notification icon, none will be shown by Windows. You can't "add" an icon to the notification area unless the software provides for the option. There are specific guidelines for this area and that's why it's small.

There's other methods of creating clickable icons for the start menu, task bar quick links and desk top. Knowing more about what you're trying to accomplish would help define the best place to start.

Hi @profdh, and welcome to tenforums.com!
It's normal for Windows 10 as they are trying amalgamate the 2 'Control Panels' into one.
You can't add it back to the classic Control Panel, but, if you paste %windir%\explorer.exe shell:::{05d7b0f4-2121-4eff-bf6b-ed3f69b894d9} \SystemIcons into a Run box you can access it.
Use caution, there's a lot of bugs between the two settings panels in this Windows beta 10.

I am running Windows 8.1 Pro X64.
Recently I have noticed that Notification Area Icons for some apps have disappeared.
A reinstall or a repair install sometimes brings them back but then they disappear after a while, and usually after the next reboot.
Have checked forums for the affected products and the only solution offered there is reinstall or repair install.
I very much doubt that this issue is down to the products. It is almost certainly a Windows problem but of course Windows Tech Support offers nothing other than the usual banal references to largely irrelevant "how to" articles.

Anyone else hit this problem?

I am really sick of my PC constantly changing whether icons in the notification area are shown or not. Doing this manually every time they change is a real pain (I have to reset my Mailwasher icon to 'Show Icon and Notifications' every two days or so, for instance). Why does Windows keep resetting my preferences?

I thought I may be able to make the task of resetting the icons to how I want them displayed, rather than how Windows decides they should be, a bit easier by backing up the relevant registry key when the icons are displayed as I want:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\TrayNotify

and just merging it when things change. But although that seems to restore the values to the registry key it doesn't actually make any changes to what is displayed in the notification area.

Anyone know of a 'one-click' solution to this annoyance? Googling hasn't lead me to a solution as yet.. the following post (first answer) even seems to suggest that it isn't possible:

I'm working with a fresh install of Windows 7 Pro. So far, all I had done was:
Install the OS (on a freshly formatted drive),
Ran Windows Update, used "Check for updates," and installed all the important updates, then rebooted.
Repeated step 2 until it didn't find any new updates.
When it was done, I went to customize the Notification Area Icons, and I noticed that Windows Update appears twice, as seen here:

I've seen items get stuck there before, from uninstalled apps, and I've fixed it using Piriform's CCleaner.

So I downloaded and installed CCleaner, checked the "Tray Notification Cache" checkbox, clicked "Run Cleaner," and rebooted.

But it didn't fix the problem.  I realize this problem may be purely cosmetic, but I'd still like to fix it if possible.

Using this control panel applet, I can configure how these icons behave. But ... I can't actually delete the icon entries in this applet for apps I've uninstalled, etc. It's worse with some apps, for example: SpeedFan. This is a portable app, and I have it start with Windows. There are now *three* icon entries for it showing in this applet. I installed and later uninstalled Skype, yet it still persists in the Notification Area Icons app, with two instances, no less. (I used Revo Uninstaller to remove the app and registry entries, and I then cleaned the registry with Reg Organizer 5.0.)

In addition, I can see no rhyme or reason as to how the icons are listed in this applet. Every time I want to make a change to a program's icon, I must scroll through the entire list and find every instance. Why no way to sort, delete, etc.?

Or is there something I'm missing?

TIA!

Hello unko,

What programs does this happen with?

You might also check the programs' settings to see if it may have one of it's own to hide or show it's notification area (aka: system tray) icon.

If it's only a few programs, then you might see if uninstalling and reinstalling the affected programs may help.

Each I boot up, whatever icons that were in the "notification area" (formerly known as the sys tray) in my previous session are gone (including the volume control - even though I have it checked off as a preference in the Control Panel). I don't mean the icons are "hidden"... they're gone. XP generally leaves me with one icon -- one that it seems to randomly choose. When I go to the Taskbar Propreties area, and click on "customize" under the "Notification Area", I see many programs/icons that are "past items"... but changing their status (always show/never show/hide when inactive) do nothing to fix the situation, because they are all considered past items. I called Microsoft, and they were baffled... they had me redo my XP upgrade (which has worked fine for 5 months until this started happening a week ago). By the way... this issue seemed to coinside with the installation of Universal Plug N Play on my system. Any thoughts?

I just installed Windows 7 and I'm still in the process of setting everything up the way I like it.

In the meantime, I've noticed that some of my programs which reside in the system tray (notification area) do not have their icons loaded in the tray. The programs are definitely running (they still respond to keyboard shortcuts and perform their actions). Their tray icons are just simply not there.

I have, of course, set the options to "Always show all icons and notifications on the taskbar". Doesn't help. I've even tried setting their individual settings, however when I select one of the missing icons to "Show icon and notifications", it tells me that the icon is inactive.

The only way to restore the icons is to kill explorer.exe and re-run it. When I do that, the icons all seem to be there.

I only installed Windows a few days ago, and I have avast monitoring my system, so a virus doesn't seem likely. I'll still run scans, but in the meantime, I'm posting because I think there must be something else going on here.

I have never run into anything like this and I am VERY worried about it. I have Windows 10. Last night I went to bed and when I awoke, my desktop was this way and continues to be this way even after restart. I get my desktop background and taskbar/start button, but no icons, no mouse, and no notification area/clock. Hitting the windows key does nothing. The search even looks different, just the magnifying glass, no extra space to type stuff in as it normally does(not that I could). I can't seem to get into safe mode to see if that works, and hitting ctrl + alt + del brings me to a black screen. It's almost like it isn't loading anything, because it restarts almost instantly and doesn't really make any loading sounds. If I go to the bios, it is normal and I actually have a mouse.

Does anyone have any idea what this could be? I have no idea what could have prompted this to happen as it was fine before I went to bed. Thanks so much to anyone trying to help out.

A:No mouse, icons, or notification area on restart, PLEASE help!

First off, what operating system are you using?
Do you have recovery disks/recovery media/recovery partition?
Have you tried any hardware diagnostics?

Can you do anything with the system?  Can you generate these reports:
1)  Please provide this information (even though you may not be reporting BSOD's) so we can provide a complete analysis (from the Pinned Topic at the top of the forum):  http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/576314/blue-screen-of-death-bsod-posting-instructions-windows-10-81-8-7-vista/
2)  Please do the following:
- open Event Viewer (run eventvwr.msc from the "Run" dialog)
- expand the Custom Views category (left click on the > next to the words "Custom Views")
- right click on Administrative Events
- select "Save all Events in Custom View as..."

Hey Guys!

Some one of you allready expierienced that settings he made for some System tray icons are not saved?

I have the problem that my program is shown there but i can't set it to "Show Icon and Notification". Every time i close the program and open it again, the settings are the default "Only show notifications".

Is there a work around to force this? And NO i don't want to check the options "Always show all Icons and notifications on the taskbar"

Need your help

Hi all
I noticed on my laptop if i add more then 4 icons to notification area (show icons and notifications),
when adding the 5th icon ->the "show hidden icons" icon (the small up arrow like in the photo ) disappear ! .
when i remove the 5th icon from notification area,
then the "show hidden icons" icon appears back.
-i tried to lock/unlock the task bar it did not help.
-i noticed on my other PC ->same happens but with the 6th icon...
1-is it a known issue?
2-is there a tweak to increase numbers (more then 5) on notification area without loosing the "show hidden icons" icon?
Thanks!

A:strange problem in notification area icons?

In the taskbar properties, (I always unlock the taskbar when customising it), Customize... (or Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Notification Area Icons), you can check the box by "Always show all icons and notifications on the taskbar", or select which ones you want to show or hide from the options for each icon above. Mine shows 8 icons and the time at the moment, but no little chevron, because none are hidden.

Yet another way to customize the notification area is by clicking on the "hidden" "<" chevron and selecting "customize" at the bottom of the icon selection box. No doubt there's a group policy and registry hack too

So as the topic states the icons dissapear randomly and i've followed the page under here and i know this issue isn't precisly new.
Notification Area Icons - Reset[2]=Taskbar Start Menu
Helps for awhile then bam they go and dissapear again, not all of them but some and it annoys me to no end, just to be clear i'm not THAT used to 7, been using old XP uptill max 2 months ago as i built myself a new pc, sp1 is allready installed and all updates i could get my hands on via windows update.

I've made 7 to behave a litle like XP cause i didn't like how 7 did it :P like... got rid of the huge icons next to the start button and made a new "quicklaunch" area and have all the icons near the clock show themselfs but as stated they tend to dissapear even if the programs are running, checked via task manager.

So don't know what else to add but that's the gist of it i guess, there should be 9 icons there minus the network icon i disabled cause i didn't need it.

A reboot or relogin sometimes helps but not everytime.

Anders, Welcome to Sevenforums!

You might try right-clicking the start menu, and selecting "properties". Under the start menu tab, click customize. Make sure all the icons that you want shown are labeled as "always show", and if they aren't, change them. Let me know if this does anything for you, or if this isn't even what you are really looking for.

Also, be careful all of the things you change in windows 7. Making it "more like xp" may actually slow the computer down a little bit as it wasn't optimized for that. You may also loose certain functionality

Up until last night the notification area icons would stack nicely on top of each other like this:

Icon | Icon | Icon
Icon | Icon | Icon
Suddenly it just started doing this, which I do not want:

Icon | Icon | Icon | Icon | Icon | Icon
How do I change it back to the way it was?

A:Stacking of notification area icons gone wrong

Right click on the Taskbar. See if "Lock the Taskbar" is checked or unchecked. Click it to toggle the current state.

If that doesn't fix it you may have to unlock it and move the slider to adjust the amount allocated to the system tray. I have double height taskbar myself.

I have my taskbar configured to always show a few programs, like controlMK, speedfan, steam, and MSN..

However, sometimes it forgets these settings, and a few of the programs (control MK and speedfan) vanish from there and are hidden.

In the case of speedfan, it simply hides it and I have to chance it back to "always show", but with controlMK, it simply vanishes, and I can't use it unless I kill the process in the task manager.

Any ideas? :\

The icons in the Notification area (next to the time) of the taskbar, are too small to be legible. the rest of the Taskbar icons are OK. The hover text is also too small

Tried to widen the taskbar - no change. Under View - changing the size, only changes the desktop icon size.

Any thoughts? Thanks

It could be that the resolution is too small for the monitor. Just asking, what is the size and type of the monitor anyway?

Right-click your desktop > Screen Resolution. Click the drop-down box next to Resolution, and change it to a lower value. 1024x768 for standard monitors, or 1280x768 for widescreens is reasonable.
