Q: Windows NT has found only 495K of low memory. 512K of low memory is required to run..

I'm posting in the XP forum because I was under the impression that I had/have windows XP. The complete message is

"Windows NT has found only 495K of low memory. 512K of low memory is required to run Windows NT. You may need to upgrade your computer or run a configuration program provided by the manufacturer"

The computer is a 2001 or 2002 Dell Rev. A03, It won't load windows and I can't seem to access any boot menu. I have not made any changes to the computer's hardware.

Preferred Solution: Windows NT has found only 495K of low memory. 512K of low memory is required to run..

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Windows NT has found only 495K of low memory. 512K of low memory is required to run..

Windows XP is of the Window NT File System (NTFS) family. Download the ISO image for Memtest in my signature and burn the image to CD using IMGBurn also in my signature. Boot off of the newly created CD and run the tests with ONE stick of RAM in at a time. testing individually. If you get any errors, that stick is bad and needs to be replaced.

My Packard Bell Easynote H5315 has 64Mb of ram and i have just bought 512Mb for it.
My question is can i use the 512 with the 64 or must i use only the 64 ?

I have removed the 64 and installed the 512 just to make sure it is recognised and works etc and it does.
There are 2 slots for memory so hopefully this can be done just to give it a little more memory.

Please advise.

Thanks very much

A:Memory advice required

Yes, you can safely run two modules of different sizes side by side in that Packard Bell system.
For best performance, put the 512MB module in slot 1 and the 64MB module in slot 2.

After my new build froze up during boot up into Windows 8, I tried to run Windows 8's built-in Windows Memory Diagnostic, extended setting, but it got stuck at 21% of 1st pass (10% overall) after running it overnight (at least 12 hours). I had 4x4GB memory modules, and re-ran this test with only one stick in different slots, all with the same result: it would quickly get to 10% overall complete, then apparently get stuck there. However I noted that I could still access F1 options when it got to 10% complete, so it wasn't frozen, but the system became extremely slow, with the screen displaying text one word at a time.

Some ideas on how to isolate the problem? I wish I could just return both the motherboard and the memory to the store, but there may be a restocking fee involved with the motherboard unless it's defective.

My parts are:
Intel Core i7-3770K
MSI Z77A-GD65

Other information/symptoms:
- I can not run memtest at bootup either by using a DVD/CD or USB key. The motherboard's boot code indicate that it keeps trying to detect the device (DVD drive or USB key) and then gives up. Maybe memtest isn't compatible with this hardware, or I am not configuring it properly, or there are some hardware problems here.

To start, I have Windows 7, on Sony Vaio laptop.

I have been working on the issues with the malware removal team, but now machine looks clean, I am still having issues.

When starting the computer and going to the task manager, I can watch explorer.exe start at about 18K memory usage and then grow constantly until it is running with almost all of the computer's physical memory after about seven min. I cannot get the context menu to show up after a few min by right clicking on anything.

I had been experiencing "freezing" while playing Eden Eternal (an online role playing game) before that, which made me consider malware and seek help here at BleepingComputer. The freezing has ended, last time I played on that machine at least, but now there seems to be some issue with the explorer.exe taking all of the memory. I haven't been using the machine since I don't trust that there's not something running in the background that shouldn't be.

In resource monitor there were "connections" that had "-" for both the name and the PID, but I don't know if that was the malware of if that's normal somehow?

Issue with explorer.exe seems to be limited to only one user account, and not the other one. That is to say that if I log on one of the other accounts explorer.exe behaves normally, as far as memory usage.

Hi - running patch current Windows 8.1, and am having an ongoing but not always constant issue regarding how much memory I have available to me on any given boot of Windows.
I have 32 GB of memory installed on the computer, and yet almost 17.3 GB of that is not available to me, and is shown as Hardware Reserved when I look at the Physical Memory in the Resource Monitor.
I have validated the memory is error free through multiple runs of Memtest, have removed memory strips and blown out any possible dust from memory slots, and SOMETIMES, it properly will show me around 30.4 GB available, however most boots it is showing pretty
consistently that 17.3 GB is flaged as Hardware Reserved.

I did some searching, and have tried some of the suggestions, such as making sure the Maximum Memory box is not checked in MSCONFIG, and have also tried editing ClearPageFileAtShutdown in the Registry to change it from the default value of '0' to a
new value of '1'.  Nothing has worked thus far.
I DO need access to as much of that 32 GB of memory as possible, due to this computer using huge amounts of memory as a Digital Audio Workstation, recording music with huge volumes of samples loaded fully into memory.  Performance suffers greatly when
half of what is installed is not available.
I have also looked in the BIOS for any ways to adjust video memory and memory mapping and neither exists in the BIOS at all for me to try anything with.  The CPU happens to be an AMD ... Read more

Hi,

I ran Windows Memory Diagnostics multiple times (1GB Ram = 2X512), sometimes it reposrts errors, and sometimes not!

I'm running two OS: Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 64Bit, where I'm encountering bad performance, and Windows 7 32Bit which runs smoothly.

I'm not sure if it's really a memory damage or something else. I upgraded lately my CPU from Intel Pentium 4 506 to Intel Core 2 Duo 7500 (compatible with my mobo), when the BSOD appeared again and again.

Thanks in advance!

A:Windows Memory Diagnostic Reports Memory Problems

Hello TheHero2012, welcome to SF!

For better mem testing use:
Download a copy of Memtest86 and burn the ISO to a CD using Iso Recorder or another ISO burning program.

Boot from the CD, and leave it running for at least 5 or 6 passes.

Just remember, any time Memtest reports errors, it can be either bad RAM or a bad motherboard slot.
Test the sticks individually, and if you find a good one, test it in all slots.

Sorry, should have read better. W7 64B will not run on just 1Gb of RAM.
If it runs ok on the 32B then there is prob nothing wrong with the ram itself.

Hello

Upgrading the memory is pretty easy. On the bottom side of the notebook is the memory slot. Remove the memory slot cover that is secured with one screw and then you can see the memory slot.

In your user manual on chapter 8-6 you can find an exact description how to upgrade the RAM and there are some pictures how to do this. Really useful so check this!!

Furthermore you can use a memory module up to 1GB for this upgrade.
I have checked your user manual so I know this information. ;)

Hi,

Joined today just so I can put this little problem out there and see if someone can shed some light on it as it has baffled me somewhat.
I have 4gb of RAM installed on Windows 7 32-bit , I know that 32-bit won`t allow me to use all of it, but I believe I should be able to access at least 3.5Gb.
Anyway, I can only use 2.5Gb as alot is Hardware Reserved ( 1538Mb to be precise ), I could accept that fact if the following didn`t happen - this is what is confusing me no end.
When I remove one strip of RAM ( I have 2x 2gb ) , the memory obviously drops to 2gb, BUT, the hardware reserved memory also drops  - to 2MB!!
As soon as I put the other strip back in and go back to 4Gb I`m suddenly hit with the 1538Mb Hardware reserved again.
To try diagnosing things, I removed my PCI graphics card and used the onboard VGA. The hardware reserved memory then dropped to 750Mb, so I came to the conclusion that the graphics card is taking 750mb. But ( this is what confuses me ) , when I only have 2gb installed the hardware reserved is 2mb , so nothing is been reserved for the graphics card in this case, and whatever is using the other 750mb doesn`t take it either!

I need the VGA card installed as I use two monitors at work and the card is dual head.
Can anyone tell me why the hardware reserved memory rockets up to 1538Mb when I have the 4gb installed, yet is only 2mb with 2gb installed?
Surely if the VGA card ( and whatever else ) needs the 1538mb then it would still try and take ... Read more

A:Hardware Reserved Memory is high - advice/opinions required..

Hello Ade,

Everything you describes sounds about right to me. The more memory you add, the more Windows will try to allocate; however, with only 2 GBs installed, windows (probably) cannot allocate memory to specific functions because it may have to swap programs in and out of memory as required. However, once you up it to 4 GBs, a new allocation scheme kicks in. First off, windows will take (up to) a full 1GB of memory off the top due to your 32 bit OS limitation. How much it takes off depends on your chipset limitations and/or your bios restrictions. So, when you upped the memory to 4 GBs, windows decided there was now enough memory to allocate a specific amount to the graphics function, and it appears that allocation will vary (on your machine) based on whether or not you are using onboard graphics or an external graphics card.

This may sound like a stupid question so I apologise before hand. I am currently having problems with my system and I keep getting a BSOD error.

When I restart my machine as I have a few HDD and a SDD installed it does not seem to boot from the correct drive so I have to constantly have to go through BIOS to fix this.

Now I am under the impression that my memory maybe at fault here, well I would think my motherboard but I need to test my memory first. So I ran memtest a while ago with ALL the memory sticks plugged in, but is this the way I should be testing my memory?

Should I only have installed one stick? or all sticks should be installed whilst conducting a memtest.

A:BSOD, Random Periods - Testing Memory Guidance Required

easiest way to test ram is to take out all bar 1 stick, turn it on, if it works swap for the next and so on.

when I'm done with the card--I just pull it out and put it back in to what

I thought the only precaution you had to take was-- turn off the camera if

are you disabling the whole card reader when you use the disconnect hardware feature

I am running Windows 7 and have 4 SATA hard drives. (One of which is partitioned and has the system software installed on one of the partitions.) I can swap memory sticks in different slots, and, once again, it will show all hard drives for 2-3 weeks. Why do I keep having to swap memory and is there an app or other solution to this problem, so I don't have to keep doing this over and over?

A:Memory swap required for My Computer to see all SATA hard drives

Hello and welcome rodo first up

SYTEM SPECS ADD IN

Can we have some systemspecs please as what you have posted gives us not that much (or anythingat all with some folks) to work with and given there are so many manufacturersof components and configurations that do influence what goes on within anygiven machine and OS.
System Info - See YourSystem Specs

Now for starters the amount of RAM you have is in my view way too little you should be running a minimum of 4GB preferably 6- 8GB if your machine will support that and that is why we need those specs .
For an example imagine the CPU is the bucket holding a known amount of water (data) and you pour that water into the second bucket (RAM) and you do that through a funnel with a 1 inch outlet then it will take the RAM bucket a long time to fill and that water will then flow very slowly onward to whatever you are trying to do from the RAM bucket.
Now if you do the same thing and you make the the RAM bucket larger the CPU bucket has more channels (more funnel outlets) for the CPU can use to transfer the water (data) to the RAM bucket (through more funnels) - so your RAM bucket of data will be ready much faster than it sounds like it is now. Then that data is also available faster to the drives etc etc

Lecture over I would suggest you run these too in any case in safe mode

I have a Toshiba laptop three years old. Its Windows (C memory used currently 148 GB out of 149 GB available. However the Windows (C memory of other computers for example in the library and in the college used only between 40GB and 60 GB even though they are bigger than my laptop. As a consequence I have problem because I have little memory left in my laptop. My laptop has some applications like all the computers but I think that each application uses approximately 1 GB. Hence I would like to know why my laptop used so much memory and how can I free memory.

A:The Windows (C:) memory of my laptop uses too much memory

hello madame and sirs,

Ihave got 128 mb ram on my pc. when i start my pc it shows 32mb shared memory. windows shows 96mb ram. i am not able to install some applications which require min.128mb ram.(windows 2000 pro)&(windows98se)

i once used KNOPPIX LIVE CD and then created some swap file as prompted..... which i deleted later on. i dint notice the ram showed my windows then. incidently i have even formatted my c: drive lateron .... but windows shows 96 mb ram

I want my ram to be fully utilised.. pls help

A:RAM (Random Access Memory) - "Shared Memory" , Windows shows less RAM.

128 - 32 = 96

Shared memory means that a part of your system memory is used by the video card and is not available for programs. You should be able to adjust the amount of shared memory in BIOS setup. Note that you will never be able to get the full 128MB unless you get a proper video card.

Hi guys,

I have had win2k running on my pc for the last 3 years. I observed some random reboots during the last few days but today, in the midst of using Firefox, the pc froze completely. Since then whenever I tried to restart it, I saw the following error message:
"Windows NT has not found enough extended memory. 7Mb of extended memory is required to run Windows NT. You may need to upgrade your computer or run a configuration program provided by the manufacturer."
I searched the MS knowledge base and the only similar issue reported was with Win95.

I am using an ECS nForce3-A MB with Sempron 2800 CPU. I have two sticks of 256MB crucial memory. I tried reseating/removing the memory sticks but it didn't help.
I cannot reboot with an OS cd also as this error appears during boot process itself. Please suggest what I should do now.

Thanks,
Nivas

How much improvement would 8 gigs more memory (total 16 g) do me for?

I 'found' 8 (2x4) gigs of memory I bought six months ago, I moved something & there it was, wrapped in the receipt. I bought & installed 8 gig (2x4) (replaced 4x1 gig diff #'s) about a month ago when I got a copy of XP-64 bit.

The 4 to 8 gigs made a big difference, how much would 8 to 16 make?

(I might add, this all is ddr3 memory I'm talking about)

The package is still sealed, I might be able to swap it for 8 gigs of ddr2 memory locally, as I have another desktop that I replaced the old 32 bit with the 64 bit os. This one has 2 gigs (ddr2) ram.

Thoughts?

A:Found more memory, not a problem

Unless you do very fancy graphic or big games or running VM it wont have a great effect just surfing email etc

Is this a different make of ram from your old?
It sounds like the new memory is not compatible with the old ram or your machine.
Try swapping the ram to see if they work on their own.

I have used the poolmon program to find the cause of my memory leak. I've been experiencing that explore.exe is eating up my memory, in fact all available memory and thus causing a severe system slowdown.

I've tried to isolate the problem and I found an explanation related with autorun: whenever I have a popup asking me what to do with the files from hard drives with mixed contents, the system begins to scan inside the file structure and start eating up the RAM. Even if you tell the dialog box to do nothing, it will go on with the process, as if it still searches for items, but it doesn't end.

If I kill the explorer.exe process in the task manager and run it again, the problem dissapears.

But I've found that as soon as I change the Autorun options in the control panel and uncheck the main checkbox so it doesn't use autorun for any kind of media, it runs as expected.

I'm using Windows Ultimate x64 RTM (build 7600) downloaded from my TechNet Plus subscription.

I also have Mac HFS+ formatted volumes in my system that are read using Mediafour MacDrive. I'll try to uninstall it and check if the problem continues.

Any suggestions?

No. It is DDR ram (double data rate); 2 x 667 is 1333; as it should be.

Hello!Short pre-story:My computer has been slow for a couple of weeks now. Some of the symptons of an infection were: 1. googleads tabs were being opened in my firefox window without my volition 2. svchost.exe used a great deal of Mem Usage (upto 150 M) 3. Firefox used a great deal of Mem Usage (still does) (upto 210 M) 4. My computer became unbearably slow. I had a free antivirus software called Avira and I suspected that it wasn't doing the job. I uninstalled it and bought a product called BitDefender Total Security 2011. As soon as I finished installing it (this required a reboot), I tried to scan my computer. The first two scans failed to complete due to some sort of error. I restarted my computer, attempted to scan again- same problem. I wrote to their support team and attempted to get it working. Finally it managed to complete a scan- it cleaned out 2-3 problems....I shrugged my shoulders and carried on for several days - until my I noticed that the svchost.exe system process started acting crazy- I had two or three of these processes running simultaneously and using up to 90 M Mem Usage each! I shut down all my programs and attempted to run a BitDefender scan. It claimed my computer was clean! I updated my MalwareBytes antimalware solution- and performed a full scan. It resulted in the removal of several infections and a huge number of items were placed into quarantine.I cleaned out the infections and deleted everything that was in the quarantine. As a... Hmm, that sounds a lot like a dos error message.

Is this a dos proggy? If so boot clean (hit f8 then shift+f5) and run the program.

Otherwise I would try to email the place as windows needs an XMS driver to operate, in XP you can't even separate it from the os.

to have Task Manager recognize the added memory? Is the fact that the Task Manager does not recognize the added memory mean other functions are not recognizing the added memory?

A:Threat Found in Memory! Unable to Clean

Hello and welcome to TSF.

Your system is infected with what's commonly known as ZeroAccess, which is a nasty backdoor trojan. Please note that more than one round may be needed to properly eradicate malware. In co-operation with the cleaning process, please: do not uninstall/install any programs unless asked to do so, to make it easier on us as it is more difficult when files/programs are appearing in/disappearing from the logs;
do not run any tools or scans other than those requested;
follow all instructions in the order they are presented;
if you have problems with or do not understand the instructions, ask before continuing;
stay with this thread until given the All Clear, as absence of symptoms does not always mean the machine is clean;
do not attach any logs/reports, etc.. unless specifically requested to do so.
All logs/reports, etc.. must be posted in Notepad making sure the word wrap is unchecked. (In notepad click format, uncheck word wrap if it is checked.)
Also note that the forum is very busy and if I don't hear from you within three days this thread will be closed.
