Lost internet access after running adwcleaner (Windows 7)

Q: Lost internet access after running adwcleaner (Windows 7)

Hey all, first post and everything.
My little brother, brilliant boy that he is, installed some program that was supposedly a better Steam with better sales. Of course this program was littered with viruses. I proceeded to run Avast, which froze up and could not enable the firewall anymore. Then went into the Control Panel and uninstalled Wajak which was popping inappropriate ads all over everything and Steam. I saw that a program called One System Care was there as well, but I couldn't remove it off of the Control Panel.

Afterwards I ran adwcleaner and it removed One System Care and Lavasoft Web Companion. Unfortunately after that finished the computer lost access to the internet. It shows that it's connected to the Network, but neither ethernet and Wireless are working. I've tried:

- Checking the Internet Options to see if a Proxy was enabled.
- Checking if the DNS was messed with in the Network options.
- Ran Rkill.exe
- Ran MiniToolBox.exe
- Ran JRT.exe
- Flushed the ipconfig, ipv4, ipv6 in cmd.
- Reinstalling the Ethernet and Wireless drivers.
- Restarting the computer afterwards.

And none of that has helped. He is still unable to access the internet after all that. I'm out of ideas, hope you guys can help. Not sure what other information I can provide.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Have you tried resetting Winsock and TCP/IP. Sometimes Winsock gets corrupted after removing adware.

Type CMD in the search box Right Click > Run As Administrator.  Type the following then reboot.

netsh winsock reset
netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt

Hello Yankees81 and Welcome to the forum -Can you recall the item that you deleted ?? Was this a major infection that caused this, or just a minor tracking cookie ??It is rare for AdAware to cause major problems like this. Do you also run a decent Antivirus program ?Thank You -

My kids use my computer a lot, and I think the clicked on the wrong "game".  I have lots of underlined words and an annoying little popup square at the bottom right hand corner of my screen, which pops up when I'm on the internet, no matter what website I go to, even ones that have never ever and would never have popups.

so I downloaded malware bites, but it would not update. I ran it anyway, and it was fine.

then I downloaded adwcleaner, and it deleted a lot of stuff, and when I restarted the computer, chrome would not get the internet. Internet Explorer would not either.  The connection showed up fine in my computer, the browsers just weren't connecting.

so I used our laptop to find this site and try some stuff from previous threads.

I pulled up command prompt, ran as administrator, and put in a bunch of stuff listed here, trying each command one by one, restarting the computer after each, and none of them worked.

then I found another suggestion to do a system restore, and that did not work.  it also made it so that the little stupid pop up and underlined words came back.

so then I found the suggestion to turn internet explorer off and back on.  when I did this, it restored internet explorer, and I can get the internet again, via that one.

I know that I am probably infected with something, and I decided to start an account so I could ask questions directly as well as post my "log" or whatever.

I don't want to spam or anything, so I'm posting the same problem, but with different words this time. Basically, I had to run ADwcleaner to remove addware, and whatnot. Then after rebooting, alot of settings were changed. Particularly the desktop, but my problem is that Wireless connections don't startup on the taskbar anymore. And I can't open them manually, when I try to go to advanced settings for a wireless connection it says "An Unexpected Error has occurred". I've tried Unhide, and that hasn't helped either.

I have not heard that issue associated with running AdwCleaner...in fact, by removing junk add-ons and extensions, it should speed things up.AdwCleaner should have created a folder located at C:\AdwCleaner. All AdwCleaner.txt logs are all stored in that folder including the Cleaning report log. Please copy and paste the contents of AdwCleaner[S0].txt in your next reply for review.

So basically, I had some extensions repeatedly installing themselves on both Firefox & Chrome, so I ran AdwCleaner. It seemed to successfully detect the files to delete, so I pressed clean and allowed the program to restart the computer. However on startup, neither Firefox or Chrome would start. I checked task manager and both programs' processes appeared when I launched the programs but then subsequently disappeared after a few seconds. The funny thing however is that Internet Explorer still functions correctly (I had to re-enable it in Programs & Features haha).

Any help with this issue would be greatly appreciated,
Cheers

Checkmark following boxes:
* Report IE Proxy Settings
* Reset IE Proxy Settings
* Report FF Proxy Settings
* Reset FF Proxy Settings
* List content of Hosts

It didn't work, so I did this next

Please click Start > Run, type inetcpl.cpl in the runbox and press enter.
Click the Connections tab and click the LAN settings option.
Verify if "Use a proxy..." is checked, if so, UNcheck it and click OK/OK to exit.
Now check if the internet is working again.
OR
Go to Start ... Run and type in cmd
A dos Window will appear.
Type in the dos window: netsh winsock reset
Click on the enter key.
Reboot your system to complete the process.
If needed : type these one line at a time, press enter after each line. See if it works after each.
netsh interface ipv4 reset
netsh interface ipv6 reset
ipconfig /flushdns

Nothing worked?  Any other suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

I have two computers:

1st
Windows XP Home
Dell Dimension 4600
512, 160 gigs

2nd
Windows XP Pro
Old Dell Dimension 4100
256, 100 gigs

I know for a fact that both computers have absolutely no adware and no viruses/trojans.

I just recently updated Windows via Automatic Update - it was a simple patch M$ gives out monthly. First I updated the "1st" computer, and when I rebooted, my antivirus (norton) was disabled, and my System Tray icon had a "Limited Internet Connectivity" icon - I couldn't access the internet at all. The comp was also sluggish even tho the update was complete. After 2 hours or so, it fixed itself - i enabled antivirus and the icon dissappeared, everything works fine.

The second computer updated itself, and has all the symptoms of the first comp (Limited connectivity, and disabled antivirus (not norton tho)). I figured I should just let it run for a bit and it'll fix itself like the first comp. It's been like two days now, I've restarted several times, resetted my router, plugged the ethernet directly into my modem, etc. The Limited Connectivity won't go away.

I've System Restored it to a week earlier, still nothing. I've uninstalled the latest update through the Control Panel. Still nothing.

I'm running out of options; I fear I might have to do a fresh install, but I'd lost tons of data (it's all entertainment related, but it'd be a pain to lose it).

Hello,

I recently installed/run AdwCleaner v4.110 and let it delete some files and registry keys on my Vista pc. I was just trying to clean some traces of old/residual infections. Everything was fine prior to the install. Now windows explorer stopped working as well as my installed programs have selective start-up. Sometimes they start, other they wont.
Firefox would default to its home page, but I cant open anything further, no web search, simply unresponsive! Everytime I type web address or google search - nothing happens. As for IE, it shows "internet connection".
I tried to run/update Malwarebytes but it wont let me. I tried rebooting in Safe Mode but it did not help, I get the exact same issues as in normal mode. Another problem is that there are no Restore Points as I had System Restore turned off.

Hi all

I was annoyed by how Windows 8 keeps sharing folders on any network I connect to, so I did some digging on Google and found a post on how to disable network sharing. Someone also mentioned how changing Users Permissions / settings would things further, so I went ahead and changed those (I got a whole bunch of prompts to confirm changes and accepted all of them).

Now I can only access some areas of my computer but I can't run a lot of programs and I also can't access my C drive when I go to "My Computer" and try opening it from there.

When trying to access C: I get the following error "C:\ is not accesible. Access is denied"

Also, several programs aren't running anymore and I get a message saying something like "path not found" (see attachments)

When I check my User Account (control panel, user accounts) I see myself as "Administrator" but I cant change any settings there either (for example, when I click on the "change your account type" link, nothing happens (no new window opens and no error message).

I've tried everthing, including installing "takeownership.reg" but I can't even instal that ! (see attachment)

I've also tried restoring the system to a previous restore point but can access any (including when I reboot using the "Shift" key).

Any ideas highly appreciated! Please let me know if you would like more screenshots , additional details, etc

Many thanks

Hey guys, first post here and I'm having a problem with my internet connection. I ran MBAM and it deleted 2 items, since that time my internet hasn't worked properly. When I load IE sometimes it will just say "INTERNET EXPLORER CANNOT DISPLAY THE WEBPAGE" other times it will partially load my homepage (google.com) albeit very slowly and only about 50% of it will load before the same page then loads stating "INTERNET EXPLORER CANNOT DISPLAY THE WEBPAGE". When I try loading Firefox, the same things happen. When I open the control panel and look at my network connection it says that it is connected at a speed of 100.0 MBPS.

I am running Windows 8 with IE 10. I ran Spybot Search and Destroy and it only detected cookies, which I let the program delete. After I ran Spybot I dowloaded and ran Ad Aware and did a scan. I ran out of time and stopped the scan, it had not found anything at that time. Since then I have lost all internet access on that computer. I still have access on my other computer connected thru a router, and by wireless. I have aVast as my anti virus software. After the issue I uninstalled all of the Ad Aware programs, unsing Windows uninstaller, thru the control panel. Diagnostics gives me the "The remote device or resource won't accept the connection Detected". My network adapters seem to be enabled, I have an IP of 192.168.10.100. I have a Zone Alarm Z100G router which I used to be able to access by typing my.firewall in the IE address bar. Now I get the same "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" error. I reset IE 10, restarted, still nothing. IE 10, Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Outlook all are unable to connect.

Sorry to add this -The Zone Alarm Z100G has been discontinued for a while, and has almost no support left for it now. Personally I would contact your Internet Provider (by phone) and see if they will still support the Zone Alarm Z100G -There has been many complaints at the Zone Alarm forum on this problem, dating back about 2 years This item was sold as a commercial unit, not a personal unit, and was never fully supported, and then sold to another company -ZoneAlarm Z100G Secure Wireless Router - ForumAdded link to ZA Router Forum -

Today my HP computer caught the system security 2009 virus, and after much research on the subject, and being unable to downlad and run any malware, virus protection, or anything else for that matter, I finally found information should use the combofix.exe. It also stated once I was finished, I should then go to this forum and try and get help with the log. However, now that I have run the combofix.exe, which does appear to have removed the malware, I cannot log onto the internet. So I am obviously using a different computer to write on this forum, but I cannot upload the log to try and get help. I tried to use the repair connection, but that didn't work. I finally found information should use the combofix.exe. It also stated once I was finished, I should then go to this forum and try and get help with the log.

No responsible forum or web page should tell you to run Combofix first and then come here for help. Combofix should only be run under the supervision of a trained analyst.

As seen in Post #2 of our sticky topic 'NEW INSTRUCTIONS Read this Before Posting For Malware Removal Help'

Quote:

Why we don't ask you to run ComboFix from the onset

As stated by the author of ComboFix:

ComboFix is a very powerful tool which when improperly used may render your machine to a doorstop.

We first need to verify if there's any rootkits present and how they could affect our tools. DDS & GMER are preliminary scans. We use their logs to map our strategy for attack.

With these logs we can determine the infections present & decide whether to deploy ComboFix.

We want all our members to perform the steps outlined in the link given below, before posting for assistance. Please follow our pre-posting process outlined here:

http://www.techsupportforum.com/f50/...lp-305963.html

After running through all the steps, you shall have a proper set of logs. Please post them in a new topic, as this one shall be closed.

Then I logged on under my user name "jochen" but the computer generated a new blank user account, listed as "Jochen.OTTO" (OTTO being my computers name) in C/...Documents and Settings/. I cannot log on under my old username anymore. Nevertheless, I still can see the intact folder "C/...Documents and Settings/jochen". The control panel "Users and Passwords" shows only one "Jochen".

Any idea how I can get all my old settings back and access programs like Microsoft Outlook as under my lost logon user name?

Hello!  I hope someone can help me with this.... I have AVG Free on my Vista PC.  I clicked the "fix performance" button.  The scan said that I had over 250 registry errors, as well as junk files, fragments, etc.  I clicked the "fix now" button, it did what it does, and since then I can't connect to the internet at all.  Already checked with my ISP, they sent out a tech, and a second tech stopped in to help after two hours without a solution.  Both of the techs were able to connect through my modem with the wireless feature, and when I brought down my laptop, I was able to connect with the Ethernet cable. I tried to resolve it with AVG's support live chat, but that was a total joke.

My thought is that the AVG program deleted something that was necessary for the connection to go through.

Any ideas?????

Thanks in advance

Hello Bass10,

What error message do you see when you try to connect to the internet? Are you connecting wirelessly?
Please navigate to c:\qoobox\combofix-quarantined-files.txt and attach that report in your next reply.
I'd also like to see what Malwarebytes removed. Navigate to c:\users\Bass10\AppData\Roaming\Malwarebytes\Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware\Logs. Please attach the 3 most recent logs.

As a guest on your site, I took your recommendation to use AdWCleaner. It has now been running for over 12 hours. It's been on the browser cleaner for several hours. It looks like it's 90% to finish. I hate to start over but not sure if I should have done this in safe mode. I had hundreds of malware on my laptop. Vipre got the 83 Trojans but I had so many browser hijackers. What to do next? Wait and let in run all night? Stop and start over tomorrow? Thanks.

Suddenly I lost access to the internet from one of 4 networked computers at work. The other 3 can still access the internet normally. I tried using FireFox and IE and neither work.
I use LogMeIn on the malfunctioning computer. If I try to access it from another location it shows as off line.
The network between the computers works fine.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Dan

A:Lost Internet Access

I found the solution. The latest security update from Microsoft causes a problem with internet access on W2K and XP, supposedly Vista is unaffected. Zone Alarm has posted a work around at: http://download.zonealarm.com/bin/fr...cessIssue.html

The work around is to update to latest version, lower the firewall setting to medium or uninstall the security update.

Every time I try to run KIS, either thru the Windows Security Center, Start Menu Programs, or the Program Files folder directly, it won't run.  The banner appears for a second or two, then it just stops -- no error message or anything.

I've tried importing older registry keys backups.  Doesn't work.
I've tried four different restore points, the last of which was from 06/22, 3 days before I even learned of ComboFix & AdwCleaner.  Doesn't work.

I've tried repairing and reinstalling .NET Framework 4.5.1 (the latest my OS will support).  Doesn't work.

I've tried to uninstall KIS under my current (and until now only) admin account and a new admin account.  I get the same error in both cases: Error 1324.  The path C: contains an invalid character.   WTH?

I can run it in Safe Mode with and without Networking/CMD.  Of course, it turns up no viruses/malware.  As soon as I run Windows normally, KIS will not run.

I know I screwed it up.  Can someone please help me get my internet security running again?

Dear experts

Until yesterday my Windows7 desktop was running fine with an ethernet cable on a LAN network, but all of a sudden the internet stopped working. My wireless laptop and phone still work and when I hook up my laptop with the ethernet cable going into the desktop it works just fine so I know the problem is within the desktop/Windows7.

I've checked the network device drivers and according to Windows they are fine and working.

Also, I cannot find any local area network in the network settings. All I can choose is a Broadband dial up connection which makes no sense. Furthermore, there is no longer a green light coming from the ethernet insert when connecting the cable. Does this mean that Windows is not recognizing and or ignoring the cable hook-up?

I hope my description makes any sense - English is not my first language. Any feedback greatly appreciated. Thank you.

A:Lost internet access. Cannot find LAN

I would first reset your router and see if the connection comes back or not. If not then try shutting down the PC, unplug the power cord from the back of the PC, push the start button to drain off any excess power and reboot the machine.

If that doesn't work than please post a screen shot of your ipconfig /all, type that into your command prompt and post the results, thanks.
