Unable to open files that I created & saved in Word starter 2010

Q: Unable to open files that I created & saved in Word starter 2010

Problem started "mid September I believe".

I purchased my laptop few years back, Never had any problems opening my docs. Thought i solved this with system restore to earlier date. this worked and i was able to open those files. I now no longer can use system restore because it wont go back to an early enough date. not sure but i think problem came from automatic up-date. I am a computer idiot. If someone out there could give me a step by step way to solve this I would be a more enlightened computer user who is happy once again!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I changed from Verizon to Comcast yesterday 06/16/2017. Today when I tried to open a Word Document it would not open. A box showed the following " Microsoft Word Starter 2010 cannot be opened, try again or repair the product in Control Panel" I don't know if this is just a coincidence or if it had something to do with changeover? I tried System Restoration without success and am at a standstill. I tried calling Comcast but they were not able to help me. Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated. I presently have Microsoft 7 32gb.

I did a clean install and took my system back to Factory settings, The only files that I can open are some that I created after the clean install. Any help will greatly appreciated. Thanks

Hi
Iím writing this being an inch close to breaking down! I canít seem to open any files on my desktop that was saved before a certain date (precisely a week ago/today is 9th june 2015). Files include jpgs, music and video files, pdf, psd, ai EVERYTHING. Anything I try to open opens the respective application (eg. If I try opening a word file MS word is launched, jpfs launch window image viewer, mp3 launches windows media player etc) but ends up with an error message something similar to windows cannot open this file. The strangest part is anything saved in the last week functions just fine! Also I donít think there is any issues with any drivers as I can watch youtube videos (so the audio and video drivers are present) What scares me the most is when I tried opening those corrupt files in other devices it gave me the same error msg. It surprises me how is it even possible that ALL the files in a system can get corrupted! I wouldnít be this devastated even if I lost my entire property because the files Iím talking about is MY ENTIRE LIFEís work especially considering I am a designer they are my biggest assets. I also tried restoring to the earliest available point but yielded nothing. The issue is so bizarre that google canít seem to show me one page or post relating to a similar issue. I sincerely hope to get a solution for my issue else it would be like rebuilding my entire life after an apocalypse. Any help is appreciated!

When I attempted to repair it in control panel it said all info would be lost, so I stopped. Unfortunately, I have some documents that I saved to a file and it requires word starter to open it. So, I don't want to lose them if there is any way to get around it. So far the only thing I have done is reboot the computer but it didn't help.

I acquired the Win 7 antivirus 2012 virus/trojan/annoyance. I went into safe mode with networking, did a full scan with my antivirus prog (Vipre). It found and removed Trojan.Win32.Generic.pak!cobra which included a temp file in AppData, and nqw.exe.
I ran rkill and malwarebytes- Malwarebytes quarrantined 2 items ( I dont know how to see what they were)

After all that, I am unable to open exe files. I get a popup box asking me to choose which program I want to use to open the program. I CAN right click everything and run as administrator.

I do not know if it is relevant, but about a month ago I had the data recovery virus. AFter getitng rid of that and using the Unhide, I was unable to open anything- I had read only permissions on everything. I created a new user and fiddled around with permissions and got everything working, but since then the computer has been real slow- there might have still been pieces of that leftover.

I am thankful for the volunteers at BC; good morning to all.

Everything was fine last night, but this morning no Word/Excel Starter 2010 docs will open.  The popup reads:

"Microsoft Word Starter cannot be opened.  Try again or repair the product in Control Panel."

I did this Change/Repair from Control Panel and got this message:

"Repair Microsoft Office Click-to-Run

I think it's obvious I do have internet access because I'm submitting this topic, but apparently MSFT Office doesn't know this.

I opened Click-to-Run Application Manager at the Control Panel and got the same error message as above. Snip attached.

I restarted and attempted the Change/Repair from the Control Panel with the same results.

From glancing in Microsoft Community concerning this, I see that those for whom the repair would not work were encouraged to uninstall Microsoft Word Starter 2010 at Control Panel, then go to Start>Programs>Microsoft Office 2010>click "use", click "open", then reinstall Office Starter 2010...however, each said this didn't work as there is no "use" option available, plus there's an error that Click-to-Run Application Manager won't function.

All of a sudden after my last computer shutdown, I could not access any of the documents I created with  my free version of MS Word Starter 2010. I keep getting the following message.

"Word cannot open the document: user does not have access privileges"

I've tried all my usual quick fixes: 1. Shutting down my PC and restarting.  2. Starting in Safe Mode and restarting. 3. Disabling all my anti-virus and
anitmalware programs. Nothing works. One other note after I shut down my PC and restarted it my free version of the Panda Cloud Anti-virus program notified me on startup that it had updated my Panda Cloud Anti -virus program which now says it is 2.2.0

Fortunately I can still access all these MS word docs using Apache's Open Offices' 3 free word program.  But I still would like to be able use the MS Word Starter 2010 program.

Thanx in advance for any help or assistance.

I just bought a Toshiba lap-top, Windows 7, with Microsoft Word Starter 2010 pre-installed.

In a blank document the pre-set margins do not function on the screen. When I type, the letters just keep going on and on to the right. If I look at the "print display" it shows the letters correctly on the page.

If I customize the margins the same thing happens --- the margins do not stop the letters from just going on one line to the right into infinity.

So, therefore, I do not have a WYSIWYG page view. How do I get the margins to work properly?

Please advise, Thank you Ed-L

A:Word Starter 2010 margins not working

What you describe suggests that you're viewing documents in "Web Layout" mode, where the page margins are ignored.
You need to change the view to "Print Layout", you'll then see that the text is 'wrapped' at the margins.

To change to "Print Layout" view, click the View tab, then click the Print Layout button.

Note: instruction applies to Word 2007 as I don't have 2010 version

Greetings Ya'll,

This is my 1st post, & since I'm trying to be a "sponge" on how Windows 7 operates, I imagine that I'll have many more.

I've been using Microsoft Word Starter 2010, up until it started freezing my PC. I actually had to hit Control/ Alt/ Delete in an attempt to get out of Word, & free up my PC. That took me to a screen that showed me that OFFSPON.EXE was not responding.

I ran a web search for this & found that it was somehow tied into the "Ads" that are supposed to come up on Word Starter 2010.

The document that I was putting together is frozen, anytime I click on to Word, & I have to repeat the process of Control/Alt/ Delete all over again.

My question is, ..., What is a recommended "Free" alternative for Word Starter 2010?

I do not want to store my data online, or on a "cloud", but on my PC.

I've also been reviewing several sites that offer Free software, & there seems to be good results with "Libre", & "Open Office", but, I'm also seeking more input on these two, or possibly any other alternative.

Any thoughts?

A:Free Alternative to Microsoft Word Starter 2010

Either of the 2 you mentioned LibreOffice or OpenOffice are good alternatives and are mostly Word compatible. Another very good one that I have used is called WPS Office.

So I downloaded the free trial of Office 365 directly from Microsoft, and have a couple issues:

WORD
When I try to open a file from Windows Explorer, a Window opens up asking me which program I want to use to open the file. None of the choices is the Word program that came with the Office 365.
Even stranger, I create a Word document and save it to my computer, when I try to open that same file the same window pops up
The only way I can open a file is to open the Word program and open the file from there.

EXCEL
When I try to open an Excel file from Windows Explorer, nothing happens. Same as above, the only way I can open a file is when I open Excel and open the file from Excel.

Can anyone help decipher whats going on here?

Yes, you need to associate the Docx and XLS extensions with the correct program.
I can't remember off the top of my head how to do it, and it is different for different versions of Windows.

I have Windows 7. I have used Microsoft office starter that came with my Dell for 3 or 4 years now. Don't need full blown office so I never purchased it. Now, it will not open. I get the same message when trying to open excel or word: "Microsoft Excel (Word) Starter 2010 cannot be opened. Try again or repair the product in Control Panel." I am very computer illiterate. I tried a system restore but that didn't help. I tried using control panel and searching for a fix, but I don't really know what I am looking for.

A little history: about 10 days ago I tried to upgrade my AVG free edition. Some glitch caused my pc to only reboot in safe mode. From there I did a system restore, then uninstalled AVG. Seemed to be fine. I installed a free Panda antivirus program. Didn't notice anything wrong, but when I tried to use excel for my payroll spreadsheet, it would not open. I tried word with same result. I performed another system restore and the only difference I see is that Panda is suddenly gone but I didn't uninstall it.

I have no idea what to do and I need those files badly. If anyone can help I would be so very grateful. Just please be very specific in your replies, please. STEP BY STEP! Thanks!

A:Microsoft starter 2010 can not open

Have you actually tried what it suggested by running a repair? Go to Control Panel, Programs, Programs & Features, and then locate Starter 2010 in the list. If it works the same as the other versions of office, you should see three options at the top, i.e. Organize, Uninstall and Change. Click on Change. When the window opens, click on Repair, and then follow the prompts from there.

A:Microsoft Office Starter 2010 Won't Open

Hi jmrpjb,

Please double-check if the program that you uninstalled is 'Word Starter 2010' or 'Office Starter 2010'? Please share the exact steps that you performed to uninstall it.

You may also try the following steps to repair the 'Office Starter' in the mean while:
- Click 'Control Panel' > 'Programs' > 'Programs and Features' > Locate 'Microsoft Office Starter - English' > 'Right click' it and select 'Change' > Select 'Repair' > Follow through with the repair process

- If the issue persists, you may also try to uninstall 'Click to run' and configure 'Office Starter' again: "Cannot be opened" error when you start an Office Starter 2010 program.

'Office Starter 2010' is a 'factory installed' program that may not be re-installed. If any vital file has been accidentally deleted; or the program could not be repaired by the above mentioned steps, you may have to try to restore the system settings back to 'factory defaults'.

You may want to have a close look at the following article also: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/982434

Hope this helps. Please share the findings; will take it forward.

He also complained that he could not open any docs from his My Document folder. Correct, we could not open any Office docs with his Starter software.

I ran a "change" (i.e., repair) from Programs & Features (selected the "Remove all Officer user settings related to this product option) and it succeeds "OK". I open Windows Live Mail and then open the word attachment and voila, it opens!!! I check a few more emails with Office attachments and they open fine.

HOWEVER -- I then go to My Documents and Word Starter cannot open a document. It hangs again.

I go back and repeat the process in Programs & Features, come back to My Documents, and voila, the documents open just fine. Go into Windows Live Mail and guess what, I can't open those attachments.

In a nutshell ---- I fix one (e.g., repair via Programs & Features) and it breaks Windows Live Mail attachments. I fix Windows Live Mail attachments to open, but then it breaks the capability to open documents out of My Documents. Ad infinitum.

I hate the work-around to have to save the attachment to My Documents and then open it but it is better (as per the customer) than from within Mail. I... Read more

Hi,What's your Operating System. What size is your drive, how much memory do you have and how much free space is available. What is your printer make and model. What steps have you taken by reference to the first error message?Have you uninstalled and reinstalled the laser printer driver.i) Checked my default printer settings. When you select print, in Word, is your printer shown as the default printer or is it stuck on something else, like NovaPDF, (even though you say you have uninstalled this), capture fax or one of the other 'printers' in the list.As regards the second error message, you may have to reassociate your word documents, to enable youto open them from the folders. As regards system restore, it can be a problem if you are short of hard disk space. Is your Anti-virus scanner up to date and have you run any malware and / or spyware scans recently;you may have picked up some kind of infection.

Please help. I do not understand what's happening when few of my users email word documents other users cannot open them, they just open blank although when I check the file size it's not 0kb. They open however with notepad or wordpad but they lose all formatting. All users are on windows 7 and word 2010

A:Saved word 2010 doc opens blank but size not 0kb

More precision is required in your explanation:

...when few of my users email word documents other users cannot open them...

Who are these few, these unhappy few, and who indeed are the others? In what form is who sending what to whom? As attachments to an email composed in WLM or from Word as an attachment? Are they being saved in a format that "some others" can't read as they have there program preferences set for a different program?

That you can open them as plain text files tells us that they are there, have you asked "the others" to try opening them in Notepad or Wordpad? Are they trying to open them from within their email programs, in which case their email may not be set up to open attachments.

I arrived on site to a client who was trying to print a letter-sized word document 2010 to their network Xerox printer.

When the client hit print, the job failed saying tray 1 was empty and tray 4 was empty.  Tray 1 is 11x7 and tray 4 is never in use. The printer's settings are to use tray 2,3,1,4. I checked to make sure trays 2 and 3 had paper and they did.
I checked the printer properties>ports and the ip address was Xs. So I uninstalled and reinstalled the printer. I also rebooted it too since the client had a power surge earlier that week and a separate printer of the client had been failing until it was rebooted.
When I tried to print the document again, it failed again trying to send it to the wrong trays.
I checked to see what trays were selected in the document and it was set to auto.
I set them to tray 2 (the primary) and it still failed for same reasons.
I tried a random word document on the client's desktop and it printed properly from tray 2.
I tried printing the word doc to another network printer and it failed that job too stating wrong trays for that printer.
This is when the client told me that this word 2010 doc had originally been a pdf. He had needed to edit a pdf so he opened it in word, made his edits and this is the word doc he wanted to print.
I saved the word doc back to being a pdf and it printed correctly from tray 2!
Luckily, the client was fine with it returning to a pdf and as long as it printed it was fine.

Anyone run into this?&#... Read more

iii) Have uninstalled novaPDF.
iv) Used Microsoft Fix it (How do I uninstall the 2007 Office suites if I cannot uninstall it by using the "Add or Remove Programs" feature?).
v) Have tried uninstalling & re-installing Office 2007, but no luck.

When I uninstalled & re-installed Office 2007, all my Quick Access Toolbar Settings & other Word Settings came back intact even though I used CCleaner to delete registry of the uninstalled version of Office. Also, all my recently opened documents were there in Word. Similarly... Read more

When i create and save a word document(.doc) and if I reopen it from windows explorer or from the start menu and then documents. They will reopen in Word pad. Then the format is all screwed up. In order for me to open it, I 1st have to start Word, then go to "File" then "Open" Even though the documents are saved as .doc . the seem to have the word pad logo or icon beside the file name. Only the backup copy of the document automaticly made by word show the Word Logo or icon beside the file name and extention.

How do change it to open only in Word.

windows 98 and word2000

Thanks
Crawford

A:Saved Word Docs open in Word Pad

In Explorer, navigate to a .doc file, and right click (you may need to hold Shift when you right click)

Select Open With

Select Word as the program to open with, and also select "always use this program..."

Its only your file association that needs renewing.

Somehow some time back I set Word 2010 to show a date on every saved page that I have. The date shows up on the bottom of the page on the left side. It also shows on a saved document for an envelope that I made. I want to delete that particular date stamp but when I open the envelope, I cannot figure out how to delete it on this item.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Dear all,
Recently there was a problem in my Dell XPS 12 and I had to use Dell factory reset to renew my windows 8.1. While I was doing factory reset my computer created a back up of all my personal files and save them in a folder called "20140701120559_BACKUP". Inside this folder there are so many ".INP" files and some XML files. When I open "include.xml" I can see the path for all my files. Sadly after my computer finished installing new windows it didn't restore my files and it restarted and came up with new windows. Now I am trying to restore my files but "Dell Back Up" and Restore application cannot find the back up and I cannot select manually that back up on my external hard drive. Then I did some search and I ended up that I can use a solution that was explained in this link:
http://www.dell.com/support/troubleshooting/us/en/19/KCS/KcsArticles/ArticleView?c=us&l=en&s=dhs&docid=539013

Using this application I can select the back up in my external drive but when I press restore, I receive this error:
SoftThink SAS has stopped working
A problem caused the program to stop working correctly.
Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.

And when I press close, it will close and nothing will happen!
Can anybody please help me to find a way to restore all my files?

Thank you,
Saman

A:How to restore backed up files that was created during factory reset and saved in external hard drive in windows 8.1?

I just found out that MigRestore.exe is making a log file and in it's log file I found this error:

Hope somebody here can help me.

I recently had a really discouraging problem, where a ton of very special files I'd spent weeks working on, refused to open in either word perfect 8 (in which they'd been created) or ms word from office xp suite. I would either get a message in word perfect about an "unsupported format," or it would try to suggest i open them in ms word 97, and then fail. In word, the doc would open, but be in total gibberish. I tried opening them on different machines, different os's, everything.

I have since been able to recover the original docs from my laptop and I'm ok, but it was scary, to be honest. All that work...anyway, I am wondering what happened, and how to avoid it in the future.

I believe that what may have happened, is that I opened some of the files in both word perfect 8 and ms word, and that somehow this corrupted them. (I don't remember my reason for doing this, but I know I had one at the time.)Are there some guidelines/warnings/issues I should know about in terms of opening docs in multiple applications? Or on different machines (my school computer, home computer, laptop, etc.)?

Also...are there any special conditions that will cause corruption like this to occur, that I should know about?

As the title suggests...I created a password for the presentation I just completed and misunderstood its function. I thought I was creating a password to protect it from being edited by the people I need to send it to. In turn, I need to disable this password...it makes no sense to send someone a protected document and the password they need to open it. Can anyone here offer advice? I have not been able to identify a means to disable this "open document" password.

Additionally, can anyone help me determine how I can protect the document from being edited by the people I send it to?

I made some MS docs at my old job, uploaded them to an empty folder in my website via WS-FTP, downloaded them at home via WS-FTP, burned to a CD on my Win98 box at home, and now I get the following message when I try to open them:

The document name or path is not valid. Try these suggestions:
*Check the file name or permissions for the document or drive
*Use the file open dialog box to locate the document
(C:\..\Bestpracticeswhitepa...)

No matter what I try to open it with nothing works, and not just on this PC, but on any PC I try. The closest I've come is some of it does open with notepad, but the rest comes out in funky characters.

I've also had this happen with archive.pst files made on the same computer. Anybody know what kind of moronic mistake I'm making, and how to fix it?

thnx -

wendy

4 documents that i saved in Word (1 I had even emailed as an attachment) opened up blank. I am using Office 2003, Windows 7. There is an earlier post (now closed) about this problem from before Windows 7 was around, so i assume it is a problem in Word. All 4 of the docs are on my desktop. Before the docs were blank I tried to move 2 of them into a folder and received this error message: "The action can't be completed because the file is open in Microsoft Office Word" however it wasn't open. The only fix i have found for that was to re-boot after which i was able to move the docs but they were blank.
