Q: Solved: Winamp - how do I get to the main console?

Winamp is only appearing as a shortcut on my Vista taskbar and the
playback settings are appearing on IE7.

Other than that, I cannot get the main console of Winamp to open up?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hey guys,

So far I've been less than impressed with Windows 10's system permissions. I am in the Administrators group, as the only user on my PC, but yet I still have to provide UAC confirmation any time I try to do anything system-related. A bit ironic, no?

Well, for some programs this is a huge issue. I'm using an older version of Winamp to play my music (long story short, the new versions have a lot of shareware crap built in, since they stopped making it a free program and instead wanted you to pay...)
It's an old program, probably from 2003 or something, but it's worked fine on every version of Windows so far. Rather than using %appdata%, it just stores its settings locally. Winamp.ini and winamp.m3u store the settings and location of most recently played file respectively, and they're located in C:/Program Files (x86)/Winamp

Right, so here's the thing. I have a mIRC script that reads Winamp's activity, and can show what song I am playing. If I run the app normally, it will not modify winamp.m3u (even though I've already edited the permissions of that file and the entire Winamp folder so that Users have full control... shouldn't matter since I'm admin but I digress). If I do "run as administrator", play a song and close the program, the m3u DOES get updated with the new song's location. However... my mIRC script doesn't behave when I do that, since the script still runs as a normal user like any other program, and somehow it just takes the bitrate, fi... Read more

A:Winamp Issues with winamp.m3u and permissions

This is not a Windows 10 issue, it's working as it should, protecting the Program Files folder as designed. By default Windows protects the system folders with global security settings, everything placed for instance in Program Files and Program Files x86 folders inherit these global settings only giving users and groups permissions to Read, Read & execute and List folder contents.

Your case is a typical example of this, another is for instance trying to save a text document from Notepad to Program Files or Windows folders; it won't work when Notepad is run normally giving Access Denied error, but can be done if Notepad is run as the built-in administrator.

In your case it's not you as an admin user who should get the write permissions, it's (as far as I know) the group ALL APPLICATION PACKAGES:

However, I do not recommend changing the default security settings of system folders. A far more simple solution would be to reinstall the software in question in another location, not in a system folder. Install your older WinAmp for instance to D:\WinAmp and you should have no issues, subject to you being able to edit your mIRC script to change the location from where it retrieves the information.

Does any other Winamp fans know what the real difference is between the bundle version and the full version is, as shown on this link:

http://www.winamp.com/player/free.php

As far as I can see, the bundle has the addition of one free Mp3 song, but surely that's not the only difference - there's over 6Mb to download the bundle version as opposed to the full version!!!

So, out of no where, WinAmp has ceased to work. Every time I open it up I get a message saying there was an error and it had to shut down.

Faulting application winamp.exe, version 5.0.0.3, faulting module ntdll.dll, version 5.1.2600.1217, fault address 0x00007d85.

Guys,

I really like Winamp's features and functionality even better than Windows Media Player. My question is that when I minimize Winamp, it doesn't show in the Taskbar the way all other programs do. Is this design by default? I had to go into the Start Menu to launch Winamp and put a shortcut on my desktop to close out of the Media Content that is playing. Can I change the behavior of Winamp 5 so that it shows minimized on the task bar? My computer is all up-to-date and there is no evidence of any viruses or malware. I update and run malware removal software very religiously.

Hi guys

I recently reinstalled Windows XP Home on my laptop but have found that WM player and my trusty old WinAmp don't play properly.

DVD's don't play at all and avi files have sound but no video. My own movies from my digital camera still play perfectly, so there isn't a problem with my sound/video cards. After previous reinstallations of Windows XP I had no problems with either media player, but for some reason this time nothing works!

I have checked My Comp/DeviceManager an all are working properly - with no naughty red "x"'s.

I installed WMP 11 from the MS Updates page, and Win Amp is version 5.35, which has worked well before. This really has me stumped - I'd appreciate any comments.

My boyfriend installed VLC player on my machine and this plays everything fine - but I still want my own WMP11 and WinAmp to work. Any ideas?

Cheers

I have Winamp pro version 5.24 and just installed Vista Home Premium last week. I did a fresh install on my Raptor and have all my media on a 120gb 2nd drive. I don't know what the heck is going on, but lately whenever I add new media to the library it will disappear the next time I open up Winamp.

For example: I just ripped an entire CD to my 120gb drive and added the media to Winamp. It was all good until I closed then opened Winamp later...all the songs were missing. They are definitely on my drive, but I have to keep re-adding them to the Library.

Does anyone know what my problem is? Any advice is appreciated...thanks!

I'm running Win2000 Pro on my main boot hard drive. System has a Creative Labs soundblaster installed. Until yesterday, I could use Windows Media Player 9, musicmatch, winamp, creative labs player etc for CD playback, MP3 download playback, streaming mp3, etc. Also had audio via several installed apps such as Fruity Loops, microsoft audio when windows first booted up, etc.

I recently moved from XP Pro x86 to Win 7 Home Premium x64. I want to keep my pre AOL Winamp 5 if at all possible but find that when I run it, It kicks me off of Aero to Win 7 Basic. I'm not finding a classic or modern skin that will work, if that's the problem. Not finding yet where this is addressed here or on Winamp's forum. Any thoughts?
Thanks

Update:
On a whim, I looked at winamp.exe>properties and found the compatibility mode on an XP setting. I unchecked compatibility and restarted Winamp. Seems to be working with Aero now, even after trying to make it fail. Does this seem right or am I fooling myself and it will eventually revert to Win 7 Basic?

Update2:
Nope. It took 7 hrs but reverted without warning. Killed Winamp then the desktop froze with CPU at 100%. Ctrl+Alt+Del, called up task manager but the aero theme was back so I started Winamp. Received no warnings and the aero theme is holding, so far. What's possibly going on?

Evening from Australia!

I've recently been having an issue with winamp and it video playing. Videos that I play in winamp, of the various forms (avi, mpeg, mpg, wmv) all play in a scren that is half and half.

what I mean is that no matter what size the screen is the left hand side is what I consider as normal brightness contrast whatever. However the right hand side is twice as dark. I have uninstalled my winamp 5.10 and now have 5.21 installed. These files work flawlessly on other programs such as windows media player and real player.

Any ideas?

I'm not sure how this started, but suddenly movie players no longer play *.avi files on my computer. When I open them in either WinAmp or Windows Media Player, nothing happens. The name is simply listed in the playlist, but there is no length listed and nothing at all happens when it's clicked on. It's not where it plays only sound with no video, nothing at all happens.
I can view them in video editing programs like Adobe Premiere or VirtualDub, so I know my codecs are in order, and if I right click on the file, it lists the codec and the length. Just none of my movie players will do anything with them.
Any ideas? They all worked this morning. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling both players and, of course, restarted the computer. I also restored the registry to a known working backup, and no difference.

A:[SOLVED] Video files will no longer play in WinAmp / WMP, etc.

Hey Miles! "there is no length listed and nothing at all happens" kind of gives you a hint. The files are in the list because they WERE there, but now for whatever reason I don't think there actually seen by the players. Is this format specific or with all formats?

Also, you can write down all you current video settings in WMP, change them, reboot, then change them back and reboot again. Sometimes the registry build picks up garbage... changing them back and forth sometimes gets rid of it.

the best solution i could think of is to convert these files to some other audio type file but i want to make sure it wont lose ANY of the quality and its labels, but i dont know if it will work without losing quality and labels (i read flac has the best ability to do it).

got any ideas?
i want it to work with winamp 2.95.

What ever happened to all those cool streams on Internet TV? There were so many free channels, live DJ's etc... Its only half of what it used to be.

I downgraded to an older version, it worked for a while, but recently all the cool channels disappeared.

If anyone has any info... thanks.

If I recall correctly, the list that you get when going through Shoutcast is the list of the most popular streams that they carry for the week/month/whatever. I might be wrong though.

Hi All

I have used the free versions of Winamp for quite a long time without trouble and have upgraded as and when new versions became available.

I recently downloaded the 5.22 version and on attempting to access 'On Line Services' was given a message similar to "Sorry, the service you are trying to access requires an internet connection, please connect and retry" - Needless to say I was connected to the Internet at the time.

On re-installing the previous 5.21 version everything was OK.

Has anyone else had the same problem and do you have a possible solution, so I can use 5.22.

Many Thanks
