MS Word 2016 (Office 365) freezing on save or save as

Q: MS Word 2016 (Office 365) freezing on save or save as

Running Windows 7 on my desktop. (MS Word on my Windows 10 Dell laptop is trouble-free.) It constantly freezes (every 3rd or 4th time I save during an editing session) on save or save as....have to reboot the program. Happens on all docs. Looked this issue up online, the "solutions" didn't work for anyone. I uninstalled/reinstalled to no avail....it was solid for 3 days, now back to freezing. Any ideas?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Since i installed Office 2016I get a message that i am not authorized to save to this location (Library Documents) and would i like to save to My Documents instead. I click yes and get the same message even though i am in My Documents.

I am the only user on my computer and am the administrator. I cannot access explicit admin function as I am using windows 7 home premium.

I have gone to the microsoft website and they do not answer any questions in regard to this. This never happened before the office 365 installation.

What do i do to fix this?

This is really recent, after I paid this year's renewal.....when I try to "Save As" on any Word doc, it hangs up forever, until I close out using Task Manager (cont-alt-delete.) I have Windows 7 Home Pro on my desktop. This does not happen on the same program on my laptop (Windows 10.) I looked into the issue online, but it seemed that the options are very time-consuming, and the reviews on effectiveness were mixed at best.

Any ideas? I guess I should at least start with uninstall/reinstall? (That's my inclination; it's just that I read other people saying they did that and it accomplished nothing.)

Thanks!

One of my user is having this problem on her Windows XP PC:

Dell GX260 with Windows XP Professional running 512MB RAM, Office XP, Acrobat 5.0

When opening a Word file & edited in Word XP, the user cannot SAVE or use SAVE AS the file, when try to exit out the file, get prompt to either SAVE, CLOSE, or CANCEL the file, at that point it will still not save the file, the only way to exit the file is to hit CLOSE to exit.

I initially thought this might be a Word Xp problem, so I ran the repair tool in Office XP, that did not fix it.

I then uninstalled Office XP, reinstalled Office XP, but that also did not fix the problem.

I then ran the Office update to download the latest patches from MicroSoft, but that also did not fix the problem.

I then UNINSTALLED Acrobat 5.0 from the PC, that FIXED the problem.

WITHOUT Acrobat 5.0 on her PC, the user was now able to open & edit a Word file, and able to SAVE the edited file, also able use SAVE AS to save the file as a new copy.

I then reinstalled Acrobat 5.0 thinking the previous copy of Acrobat 5.0 on the PC might be corrupted, as soon as Acrobat 5.0 was back on the PC, the same problem with the SAVE feature came back in Word XP.

I then installed the patch update for Acrobat 5.0, that did not fix the problem.

At this point, I am out of clues on how to fix it....The user tried Acrobat 6.0 before on the same PC, but decided to reverse back to Acrobat 5.0 because of format problem with 6.0.......so Acrobat 6.0 is no... Read more

I was typing up an important document on Microsoft Word for school. When I went to save it, the Save As menu froze up and I had to kill the task.

When I opened up Word again, it only recovered half of my document. When i tried to save it, the same thing happened.

Also, when I went to My Computer, it wouldn't load the drives and folders and froze as I was opening it up.

I did a hard shutdown and reboot and all seems to be working fine now, but I don't understand why this happened.

I did a quick scan on Trend Micro Housecall (just the main Windows folder because all previous infections would end up in there)... nothing. Spybot... nothing. Hijack This... nothing.

Why did this happen?

I certainly can't afford to lose any more work like this... especially if it won't let me save at all eventually.

Finally this worked:

I hope this saves you some time. I spent over 2 hours.

Greetings,

I'm a former IT Systems Technician, and my girlfriend is a work-from-home writer. I've recently migrated her PC's original processor and ram from an HP motherboard to an ASRock board, linking the original WD Caviar Blue 1TB drive to the board as a secondary drive to collect documents and storage from, while running Windows 8.1 (up to date) on a Seagate Barracuda 250GB for the main OS and programs drive.

With those specs out there in the open, now it's time to get to the root of the problem.

As a work-from-home writer, my girlfriend depends on the ability to save her documents to Microsoft's OneDrive and upload them to her publisher, but with this error showing up, she cannot get them to save. I have never seen such a message in my many years of IT service, and I'm completely baffled.

I am the administrator... So now I turn to you guys for help.

Hi!

First time here as I'm usually about to fix my own computer issues.

Since my son got in somewhere on one of my computers, whenever I open Microsoft Outlook or Word, the "save as" dialog box appears wanting for me to save whatever at random. In Outlook especially, if I open it and receive an email, it'll wish for me to save the title of whatever it is as "whatever".htm. I'll continually cancel to not save anything, try to save what it wants me to, etc BUT it will continue to pop up. The same happens in word where I'm rendered helpless as it wishes for me to "save as" "Doc1" all the time. I'm not able to do anything else and neither program will close unless I open up task manager to "end task".

This has been going on for a week now and have had to manage my email on my ISP's webmail website. I've done virus scans - norton (even disabled it as I know it's a FUN program), performed office updates, clicked on the HELP - detect and repair but no avail. I'm thinking that my next step will be is to uninstall and reinstall after exporting my mail folders.

What do you think it could be?

I have a Toshiba A55 laptop. I am running XP Home SP2 and Office Professional 2003 SP2. All utilites function normally with the exception of Word. The file menu shows "save" and "save as" to be disabled (greyed out). It will save with control-S, and I am able to save to any location I want. I am not receiving any error messages. All updates for XP and Office are current. No viruses or other malware. I have seen issues with Ofice SP2 concerning HP systems but they usually either lock up or generate errors. I do not have either of these problems. I have been looking for a solution for a few days to no avail. Any suggestions would be helpful.

In Microsoft Excel, it has a similar affect, showing "Microsoft Excel". I want to remove this tree from view, and ONLY want to see "Computer" (or "This PC" on Windows 8.1). Is this possible, and if so, how?

I'm running Word 2013. Up till a week or so it worked fine, but now it freezes completely whenever I try to save or save as a document, new or modified, in my C:\Users\Tom\Documents folder, even though it does seem to save or save as correctly if I choose subfolders in ...documents or other separate folders.

I have tried running Word in safe mode. No help.

I have done a complete repair using control panel/programs...no help. It seemed to have uninstalled MS Office 2013 completely and reinstalled it completely, and nothing improved. One minor problem I have with this is that I've lost my product key from the original version, and I can't retrieve it from Dell, where I bought the machine, so I can't activate the reinstalled MS Office 2013! It'll run till next Tuesday, then it'll be dead. My bad, but that's not what's causing me this grief.

I've tried running Word with and without first launching any browser. The problem occurs whether or not I've launched a browser.

Hi all

Just a stupid little problem with W7 I noticed which is VERY confusing but simple to fix.

I changed via the dialog the TEXT SIZE via the screen resolution in the control panel to CUSTOM SIZE.

With one of the newer "Cinema" or Very Wide screen (1680 X 900) displays after I'd increased the text size to over 160 % I didn't get the possibility to SAVE any documents any more via the SAVE AS button. The SAVE dialog would appear but the SAVE button was missing.

The effect was noticed in Office 2007 (all programs) Notepad etc etc.

Seems to be a Windows fault as this should not be allowed to happen.

on more traditional "Squarer" type monitors -- no problem.

I couldn't find the answer by googling but a bit of "trial and Error" fixed the problem.

Thanks for any help.

A:Can not save/save as in word.

If another user logs into the same machine, can they save/save as?

If so, then it's a problem with the user's local profile. You would need to delete that and create a new one. (backup any data first)

If it affects all users on the machine, then uninstall office, delete the c:\program files\microsoft office\office? directory (? will be a number, 9, 10, or 11, depending on the version of office (I don't recall what # is for OFfice 2000)), and then reinstall office.

Hi,

I've been searching for most parts of the net and the forums here and did install/uninstall/restore my notepad, paint and wordpad but nothing seems to work.

When these files are opened, nothing seems to be a problem. But whenever you attempt to save by Ctrl+S, or the by clicking File>Save or File>Save As the program automatically closes. This has been a consistent behavior for the 3 softwares.

I'm using Windows XP 64 bit OS and had no error messages of any sort except that these programs just close themselves when a save attempt is done.

I did virus and malware scans by Avast, ESET Nod & Kaspersky and nothing was detected.

Reinstalling isn't an option for me now as I don't have any optical drive... besides, this may be very hard for me but I'm willing to suffer for the sake of learning.

I'd really appreciate your inputs on this matter.
Thanks for all ideas and help ahead!

I record music and use adobe programs for freelance artwork. Also there are a number of pictures I'd love to recover (though as far as I know they're backed up on google drive). The .wavs of some recordings were recent and were not backed up in time before the disk crashed.

I apologize, this is lenghty but i'll throw it all out there.

With regard to clearing lists of [recently opened and/or saved] file names in Windows file dialog boxes, Orbital Shark had described the following procedure (from his 01 Nov., '10 post-) How to Clear This Dialog Box ? :

"If you want to selectively clear the Common Dialog file names MRU, you need to delete these two registry keys manually:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Explorer \ ComDlg32 \ LastVisitedPidlMRU

HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Explorer \ ComDlg32 \ OpenSavePidlMRU"

My question is as follows (and it is probably a silly one, therefore please bear with me and thank you):

Is the prescribed procedure to delete the *actual keys* ("LastVisitedPidlMRU" & "OpenSavePidlMRU"), or instead to delete the *contents* of those keys? i.e.: Should I select/highlight the key within the left panel of the Regisgtry Editor, and then select delete; or should I select/highlight the key within the left panel, and then select/highlight in the right panel all the contents of that respective key, and then delete all those contents (not the actual key itself) indicated in the right panel?

Thanks much for your patience and for your help! Win

The computer involved is using Windows 7 Pro 64bit and Office Professional Plus 2010.

I am having a problem I cannot find a solution to. I have one user at a clients location that has recently stopped being able to save excel files in their my documents. The my docs is being redirected to a server. The files open correctly and can be edited, but when save is clicked an error box says the document not saved. Using cntrl-shift-i I found the error code to be 100490. I can open any other file and save them just fine. And any new excel documents can be opened and saved correctly. The file can be saved into the same folder using save as is and the document is renamed. However, the user cannot erase the old file.

Doing some digging I made sure the trust zone was enable for the network path and trusted locations on a network were allowed. They had already been configured.

I checked for the windows update that microsoft reported could fix this problem and it was not installed. I went ahead and tried the hotfix, but it would not run because of the missing update.

I tried changing permissions and ownership. This where it gets strange the user has full control enabled on the folder. On any other folder or file I can right click and view the security tab. However, on the excel files when I click the security tab a red line is displayed that says "This file is currently not available for use on this computer." While I have sent feedback into Microsoft, I thought I might post here aswell.
In IE9 when you click a download, a pop-up from the bottom asks 'Do you want to open or save file.xxx from x.com' then gives you the option to 'Open' 'Save' or 'Cancel'
During testing, we found that users would just click 'Save' then not know where the file they downloaded went. After explaining that it was in the downloads, they complained that previously they just chose where to save the file and it saved there. Now they
have to open downloads and copy paste to the location.
We could teach the users to always drop down and select 'Save as' but I can tell you it would be a lot easier if there was a group policy, or a default we can change so the default was 'Save as'
Other than that, I have no complaints :D.

Is there any way to set the default save location folder for downloads in IE8 to the last folder that the same file type was saved in? It makes no sense to default to a single folder and have to browse through to the desired folder for every single download, so I assume there has to be an option somewhere.

A:Setting default save location to last save folder

Limited choice here. Pictures (right click, save picture as) will save to My Pictures. Else, right click save will save to the last folder used.

No other option by file type.

But,you can do this... Adding Entries to the Standard Context Menu

I cant upload anything. Its very hard to pinpoint the exact problem because not all programs have it. Adobe photoshop works fine. Autodesk Maya works fine too. Firstly, my employee's are running into a problem where they cant save their files because the file is "in use" according to windows 7.

What i've narrowed it down to is the fact that windows uses the files to display details or even a preview of the file whether it be a thumbnail or a window pane preview of the file or even simple details barring it from saving the file after it is opened, edited, and ready to be saved.

I have disabled all the obvious frills that might be conflicting such as: "file previews, show thumbnails etc." just cant quite get this resolved.

Also, windows 7 and its short term memory loss wont allow some of my employees to save their favorite folder views (I understand that windows 7 tried to implement a more functional window mode, allowing users to have multiple view for their different folders) but the "pick one and stick with it option" of "Apply to all folders" the obvious approach doesnt work. Or merely works for a few days then reverts. I've seen regedits about changing the "bag size" and such but that looks a little more involved than i want to get with the registry, also potentially affecting something in the process.

Any tips?

Hello,

I've moved your question to the Business Applications forum since those for any of the various office suites fall under that category.

Is your issue occurring only for a specific single file, or a few files, or are you getting it no matter what Word document you try to open?

I want to be able to look at how my document has changed over time. So......I've been learning about markup/tracking changes, etc. but there's a basic understanding I'm missing. If I open a document I've worked on and elect to open the review pane, I see zero insertions. This, after I've made extensive revisions/edits/etc. to the doc. I will even make a bunch of changes at that point, just to make sure: insertions, deletions, add picture, delete it, eliminate paragraphs, etc, etc. The review pane still shows "zero"......what am I not understanding?

Word 97 is only available as .rtf

If you want .doc, use save as - Word 6.0/95.
It is backward compatable with Word 97

Hi Trisha,

Welcome to Seven forums.

It seems that USB drive is not in a proper format. You would need to format the USB drive in Windows before you can use the same.

Please format the same and they try to use it and let us know if it works for you. Right click on the drive and then select format, press ok and it should complete.

Keep us posted with the results so we can advise you further.

I am unable to save a file to my desktop in Microsoft Word 2002. I am presented with this message :A file error has occurred. Try one or more of the following: Check the disk drive to make sure the disk is properly inserted. Check the disk or the disk drive to make sure there is not a hardware problem. Check the network connections.

How can this be since I am trying to save to my desktop? I tried searching the internet and none of those solutions seem to present any help.
