I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello samrat and welcome to TSF !

We'll need more informations. What kind of data are you trying to write ? Did you make sure the file wasn't too big to hold on a DVD ? Were you able to burn other DVD's properly ?

What's the brand and model of the DVD writer and what burning program do you use ?

I'm trying to transfer files from an older laptop that should go into App Data\Roaming, but I get a popup that I can't write there. I've changed the file attribution to uncheck Read Only for the file and its subsequent files and folders, but still canot write to, or even get to, the Roaming part of the tree.

What am I not doing or doing wrong?

Thanks,

P.S. I've searched this forum and can't find any reference to this.

Hi
I have read several articles on the net which suggest writing data files to DVD is quite straightforward.
I have XP3 with all updates except those to IE8 and I have 2 DVD writers installed, one of which is claimed to be dual layer.
Following the instructions in the articles I should be able to drag files to be saved to a dvd icon but the only option available to me is to write to CD. The help files on my computer make no mention of DVD writing at all.
When I installed the DVD hardware I did not use a CD for drivers, Windows claimed to have found suitable ones, could this be the problem>
Anyway I have several files to archive which are far larger than a CD and would appreciate advice on how I can write these to CD.

I think it's done so you can restore all of your open tabs if your browser crashes, Windows crashes, or you have a power outage, etc.

I'd guess all browsers do it, but you can adjust how often it's done in for at least some browsers.

I wouldn't worry much about it. Adjust the frequency if you want.

I have a Compac Presario tower=OEM with windows XP.. We can copy files to a floppy easy & quick.. When we try to copy files/data to a CD, I have been using the Sonic Program. I would like to be able to copy a file and add more files with a couple of quick clicks. Steps we take now.
My Documents=Click file. Click copy to CD. Click the drive. Click Copy. My Computer next. Right click on the drive. Click- Write these files to CD.
Wizard comes up. Click next. Takes 25 sec. 1 file.
Isn't there an easier way?

A:Writing files/data to a CD

You can install a UDF writer program (packet writer) like InCD (Sonic's product is called DLA) and use drag-and-drop with CD-RW discs. There are also UDF programs that let you use normal CD-Rs, but they are rather flaky in my experience.

You can't have simple drag and drop with normal ISO CDs, because the ISO 9660 filesystem is not really suitable for storing data Writing a new session for every dropped file would eat up your disk space very fast.

Hi,
I need a continuous DVD disc for photo storage, so that I can add to it when I'm backing up my photos.

I have DVD +RW discs and also CD -RW but don't know how to make-up a disc up so that I don't have to delete files from it first in order to write back to the disc (which is what I'm doing at the moment)

Could someone please help me here?
thanks

A:Re-writing data without deleting

All CD Media or DV Media (RW) is read only by nature.
While "packet writing" programs such as Nero InCD and Roxio Direct CD work around that to let you do read/write, please be aware that they are notorious for causing complete loss of data and cannot be read in a PC that does not have the same software installed.

If you value the image files, do not use multisession or packet writing unless you have at least one other set of complete file backups off the computer in a different format (preferably 2).

I tried to copy some data folders on to a 4.7GB DVD with Nero Express. I could create DVD_video which could play on DVD Players. But when I wrote data folders it failed, on all my four attempts. Tried different DVDs - Sony, Moserbear etc. My DVD writer can write data on a CD quite nicely. A Nero Log is given below. As you can see there was no data over runs. I will appreciate any help to understand the problem and to solve it. Thanks to all of you. BTW I am new to this site Regards to all.

Two things:
First, what is the best freeware program out there for writing zeros to a drive in DOS? I want a program that I can just boot to the floppy and run it off of disk and easily write zeros over the drive. WD has this included in their utilities, but this is an OEM drive. I had this one program that was pretty good for this, but it only ran in Windows.
Second, any body have any tricks for recovering data on a failed drive? I have this WD drive that failed last August or September. (WD won't send drives to P.O Boxes, so I had to wait until I came home from school) When it was failing, I starting saving files by copying from this drive to another in windows, but it didn't work too well. After some time it would say the drive was disconnected and I would have to restart. At first it was after a few 100 MB and very soon it wouldn't really let me get into it so I quit. This was mid Sept and I haven't done anything since then. It has just sat disconnected in an empty HDD slot. There is about 50 GB on it and if possible I would like to just image it onto another HD. I don't think I'd get enough run time out of it to get into it and save all I want. If I can get it to run for a good 4 hours I should be able to just let it sit there and do the work.

I would like to hear anything and everything. The best method, specific processes.............whatever. Such as put the good drive on primary master and failed drive on secondary slave or what not... Read more

Hello,

I am trying to move my thumbnails cache from my SSD to a ramdrive, to stop excessive writes and also speed up the cache.
I am using Dataram Ramdisk, and have moved FF cache, IE cache and temp files, and user TEMP and TMP files (but not system TEMP and TMP, which I moved to a HDD) so far.
Moving the thumbnails cache is a bit more tricky, but should be doable using junction.
I have created a 1GB NTFS ramdrive, created a folder TEMP for all the aforementioned stuff, and a folder called Explorer to mimic where the thumbs cache will go. I then saved an image of this drive and get it to load at startup.
To delete the original folder, I created another admin account, logged in and deleted the Explorer folder at C:\Users\[main account]\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer.
I originally used mklink command line to create the junction, then subsequently used Link Shell Extension, which makes life simpler. The problem is, the 6 .db files contained in this folder are created in the ramdrive Explorer folder upon logging back into the main account, but windows doesn't appear able to write to it (which seems odd, as it's just created them!). When opening a folder with pics in, no thumbnails appear, just icons.
Presuming this to be a permissions issue, I allowed all users, system & admin full control of the ramdrive and the Explorer folder, and re-saved an image. It still won't write.
I found if I copied the explorer folder into the ramdrive with data already in it, then cre... Read more

A:Data not writing to Ramdrive using symlink junction

I don't really have a solution for your issue, but to be honest...I do recommend moving your caches to HD. Caching files becomes kinda pointless when you lose all the cache contents everytime you shut down or reboot your PC (that is, unless you save an image of the RAM disk to HD).

It simply isn't worth it, as there won't ever be so many cache reads/writes that they would be noticeably slower using the HD than they would in RAM.

As for thumbnails, definitely keep them on, since otherwise all the image files will be read and read over and over again to create the thumbnails. But the thumbs.db files themselves are pretty small and not worth obsessing over - why not just leave them on the SSD?

Truth is, you'll never completely stop Windows from writing all kinds of temp files and logs to the system partition, even in folders you wouldn't suspect of holding such files. I haven't even mentioned things like spyware/antivirus software and their signature databases yet, or Windows updates which are downloaded to C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download and then installed to other locations...

Again, thumbs.db files are relatively tiny (a few 100s of KB at most) so I just wouldn't worry about them.

A:Access 97: Writing Calculating data to tables

Love your name.

Ok. Don't do the calcs on forms.

Do a query with your table fields. Add fields and create expressions for your calcs. Create the form based on the query instead of your table.

You don't NEED to store calcs in tables....that's the whole idea. All calcs are done "on the fly" (when you run the query, form, or report), so there's no need to store them in tables. You're just wasting space.

Understand?

HI

Excel 2000 - more than occasionally not saving correctly
Turbo lister2 (ebay software) - some newly created items mysteriously dissappearing
Planner program (effexis planner) - data file for some reason suddenly changed to an excel icon and therefore I could not read it until I realised and changed it back

In case you're wondering if its the drive - I using a brand new hard drive Maxtor SATA2 and my device driver is not showing any problems

I dont think it can be a privileges problem either as I have only one account set up which is the admin account

I am starting to think there is some bug in Windows 7. Have you encountered anything similiar before and any idea if theres a patch
Thanks

I've been having a lot of trouble lately with a SCSI hard drive. I hope someone out there can help. Occasionally (this seemed to happen when the drive was getting full, but I'm not sure that had anything to do with it) when I would try reading from the drive, the activity light would stay on for a while and I would get the error that I referred to in the subject line.

After this would happen, I would run scandisk. Most of the time, it stated that both copies of FAT did not match, but it seemed to fix it without much trouble.

The hard drive is a Quantum 4.3GB partitioned into two FAT32 2GB sections (F: & H . The SCSI card is an AdvanSys Ultra Wide adapter. I have an external scanner and an internal CD-R drive that are SCSI as well. As far as I know the termination is correct.

To try and fix the problem, I backed up my data and repartitioned and formated the drive. I thought that had worked, but I'm still getting the same errors.

Is my hard drive dead? Should I try a low-level format? Buy a new SCSI card? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

A:Error Writing To Drive H: Files or Data may be lost

How old is it? Most Quantum SCSI drives have 5 year warranties on them. It does sound like it is going bad to me... I would suggest backing everything up and getting it replaced.

A:Reading/Writing data from/To Handheld device which is connected through serial port

Do you want the device to read a file from the PC or the PC to send a file to the device? These two approaches are fundamentally different.

If you want the device to read that file without user interaction, then you have to write a special device driver or a monitor program that would listen for requests from your device and provide the file.

I need to write a macro that will copy data from one spreadsheet into a separate spreadsheet (not in the same file). Here is the scenario...

On the first spreadsheet I have a customer's name in one column and a customer's address in another column. On a separate spreadsheet a have those same customer's names without the addresses. On the second spreadsheet the customer's name may be listed more than once. What I need to do is add the corresponding address to the second spreadsheet beside the name of the customer (identical data from both spreadsheets). The reason copy and paste won't work is because the customer may appear numerous times on the second spreadsheet and their are approximately 50,000 rows of data.

The macro needs to basically say IF Spreadsheet 1, Column A (customer) equals Spreadsheet 2, Column G (customer) then ADD/REPLACE info from Spreadsheet 1, Column B (address) to Spreadsheet 2, Column H (currently blank). I just can't figure out how to make it do that. ANY HELP ANYONE CAN GIVE IS APPRECIATED!

That is a direct link for drivers for your FN keys. Try it and let me know how it works.

How long has the problem been occurring? If it just started happening, you may try to do a system restore. Make sure all of your personal files are backed up just in case of an error.

Hi - have you AHCI enabled in the bios? If so it could be the driver Microsoft installs automatically during install - to fix this go to the below site and download and install the Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver if you haven't already installed it.
I think its updated with the chipset drivers now, so you could update them firstly, and see if that fixes the problem if not install the rapid storage driver - available on the same support page below.

You could try this microsoft fix if you have the rapid storage driver already installed assuming its suitable :

Hi,

I have a Blue-Ray Drive on my HP-G70 120. I am running on WIndows 7. Recently, my blue-ray drive has been disturbing a lot. I wrote to CDs and DVDs before, and it worked fine. Also, I can read from the discs, so I dont think there is a problem with the laser, rather I suspect some problem with the software.

My Problems are:
Clicking on the drive icon says its a blank disc, though the disc is not.
While at other times, ejecting the drive from windows or from the button says "An error occurred while ejecting BD-ROM". At other times it ejects fine.
I burned some files onto a CD that already had 80MB written on it, using BurnAware. Now, after burning, only the previous (80MB) are present there, but no sign of the newest write. Also, it shows "0 bytes free of 80MB" when clicking properties on the drive icon in Windows Explorer.

So How do I fix these problems?

Thank You

Have you tried re-installing software?
Or trying another burner software altogether to see if its the software or the drive itself?

I'm looking for help with a problem getting my DVD writer to recognise blank DVDs.

I can read and write CDs no problem and the drive will read already written DVDs(films, software etc). However when I insert a blank DVD the drive just keeps trying to access(green light on drive keeps flashing and drive is spinning) the DVD.

I am using DVD+R discs and have never had a problem in the past.

The drive is an Emprex 16X dual layer reader/writer. I have run the driver update and apparently the drivers are the most recent.

It may something simple or the drive might be just broken, but any help, advice or info would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Hey techguys,

I'm trying to help my sister with a problem she's having with writing CDs. I drag the files to the CD drive and they appear in that drive's folder fine, but when I try to press the 'Write these files to CD' button I just get a bleeping sound.

I've used this process on my laptop multiple times and have had no problems with it.

Her laptop is an HP Pavillion dv8372ea

Cheers

Hi

I run a Pentium 4 with XP Professional. It came with Roxio Easy CD Creator 5.2 installed but I've never got around to using Roxio. I can play music CDs OK via Windows Media Player.

Realised I should be backing up my HD and tried to backup onto a CD-R with no joy so tried a CD-RW - no joy. Went and bought new CD-RWs in case the disks were at fault but still no joy.

Eventually found out that the Roxio version that I have can't be used on XP Professional so downloaded Nero 7 Demo. Still getting same messages.

When I try to copy I get a couple of different messages:
"Buffer underrun protection activated" and shows Type of disk in recorder: Empty
"Waiting for disc - Please insert disk to write to"

And previously got "Unrecognised data" and "insufficient space left" but it's a blank disk.

I've tried using Nero to do a quick erase but the Erase option isn't highlighted so can't.

I'm obviously missing something really basic ... anyone any ideas? I've attached aerror log in case this is of help.

Also, do I have to format all new disks before using and, if so, anyone know how to format using Nero 7 demo?

Many thanks.

A:Problem Writing To Cd-r Or Cd-rw

Hi Denise. Roxio and Nero don't like to cohabitate (I found out the hard way). Uninstall both of them for the time being.Download and run XP_CD-DVD-Fix.zip and unzip the contents. Run the EXE file. Reinstall Nero. If this doesn't work you could try using an inexpensive optical drive cleaning disk available at large retailers and computer shops.---------------------------There are 2 ways to store data on a RW disk. The first way is to burn to it like it is a CD-R and then erase the whole disc to reuse it. The other way is to use Nero's InCD driver to format the CD-RW. This will allow you to treat the disc as a 500MB removeable disc in which you can add and remove files and folders in Explorer as if it was a gigantic floppy. Only computers running InCD will be able to write to the disc.

I searched here and there a lot and still wondering is it a problem with sp3 or the dvd rw driver which mine is SONY DVD RW DRU 830A or it is a problem pertaining to the softwares that I use kike NERO, DVD Shrink. At present none of the copying and burning softwares cannot write in dvd driver.

A:XP SP3 and writing problem in DVD RW

It is XP SP3 that is causing your problem. I have a Sony DRU 710A that stopped working after I installed XP SP3. It would not recognize any blank DVD media with Roxio or Nero. I pulled the drive out and put it in another machine that only had XP SP1 installed. The drive worked great. I then installed SP3 and the drive quit working again. I then uninstalled SP3 and the drive started working again. Microsoft needs to fix this problem. I hope someone can put enough pressure on them to fix this issue.

I installed a used TDK (24/10/40) CD drive in my Dimension 8100 machine and then installed the Nero 5.9x version with InCD. Once in, my CD wouldn't read/recognize other discs, not even commercial text discs. It only recognized InCD formatted CD-RW discs. I uninstalled Nero but now my CD ejects any disc except the specially formatted InCD discs. I have an OPTORITE 48x16x48 CD-RW drive, CW4802, running Win ME. It seems to write to CD-Rs and CD-RWs that are the regular density 650MB, 74 minute types. However, it balks a lot and gives me a generic error telling me the media is damaged or has scratches or the software is bad, etc. whenever I use 700MB CD-RWs.

I updated the firmware to the latest version, but it wasn't far behind anyway.

I am using new (never written to) Memorex disks. Any tips or fixes on how to overcome this problem would be appreciated.

This may not pertain to your problem but have you tried lowering the write speed down a bit? I find that some CD's within the memorex line and TDK line even thought they say 48x compatable or Multi Speed they balk at 700's. Another thought would be to hold your storage down to 650 to 675MB vs all of the 700.

Just some thoughts.

My computer behaving strangely when trying to write cds in my ASUS DRW-1608P.
I use nero experss 6.3.1.18. Whenever I write cds in 10x or more speed the buffer level(not read buffer) keeps falling suddenly. And if i write at more than 10x buffer level acts the same and after a few minutes writing about 50 %(approx) shows write error and stops .When the buffer level falls the HDD LED also stops blinking for a few seconds. This thing has wasted my many blank CDs.
So now I am forced to write CDs at 10x which takes a lot of time.

Please help

Good Afternoon miltus_31, as you are aware the burn laser deteriorates with useage.
Your description is kind of inline with "old age".
Rather than get too involved with troubleshooting and changing things, if the machine has burned more than a couple of spindles of blanks successfully over a period it may be more productive to try a new burner.
There is nothing worse than having an important burn that wont!

I believe I have a virus on my PC. There were 100's up popups all over my screen. The day prior I had removed Norton Internet Security, installed Zone Alarm.. and had intended to return the following day and install Avast. but.. unfortunately I didn't get to before this happened.

I'm able to boot up in safe mode and tried a system restore to the prior day (to the problem) but upon rebooting my screen went black after the windows loading screen. Now, I guess system restore doesn't solve problems like this, but in the past it'd fixed anything I'd done before.

Rebooted again into safe mode and all my files are there. Is there a way to copy files in safe mode to dvd or cd? or fix the problem?

If I have to reinstall the OS, I must retrieve some pictures that hadn't been backed up.

Any advice or assistance would be appreciated.
